Nintendo yesterday confirmed the upcoming squid-shooter Splatoon 3 would be "inkoming" this September on the Switch.
Alongside this, we also got a brand new trailer, showcasing an extended look at Turf War. That's not all, though. In addition to this, Nintendo has now also shared the official North American game box art. It's got a similar look to the first two games.
Splatoon 3 will see the Inklings enter the 'Splatlands' - a new sun-scorched desert location best known for its city of chaos Splatsville. This next entry will see the return of Turf War, the story mode, Salmon Run and all sorts of new stages, weapons and content.
Even in this desolate environment, Turf War* reigns supreme and battles rage in new stages located in the surrounding wilds. Dynamic new moves help these fighters dodge attacks and cover more ground, along with a new bow-shaped weapon to sling ink.
Join Agent 3 in a fight against the unruly Octarians in story mode. Discover the secrets of Alterna, the Fuzzy Ooze, and how they connect to the mode's theme, "Return of the Mammalians.”
Team up and fend off waves of dangerous Salmonid bosses in the next iteration of Salmon Run*, a co-op mode with fresh new features.
What do you think of Splatoon 3's box art? Will you be adding this game to your Switch collection when it arrives later this year? Tell us down in the comments.

AWOOGA that's a good box art!
Why does DLC need box art?
I'm ready for this. I've taken a long hiatus from Splatoon 2 due to playing it so much but I'm ready to jump back in.
What is that, a paint bow he/she is using? That's pretty sick.
Yep, that is a box with art on it.
Left Inkling: It's over, Right Inkling! I have the high ground!
Right Inkling: You underestimate my power!
I like how colorful it is. I like the Splatoon 3 logo as a whole as well.
A maniacal masterpiece
Inkling hype is real.
Nice and colorful. A perfect amount of chaos going on. I will say that the Purple-haired Octoling looks weirdly shiny in a way? But other than that I think it looks great. September 9th cannot come soon enough.
I'm just wondering how the trees look.
Oh, wrong game. Weird how DLC is a sequel. What kind of world do we love in?!
Great, now I need the physical version LOL.
Why specify Switch in the headline? It's not like this is coming anywhere else.
I'm not really feeling that box art.
I thought the first two games had really eye catching box arts that genuinely made me want to buy the game. This... not so much.
I already have this at home, oh no wait I've got splatoon 1. No, actually, I don't, I have the fist set of dlc, Splatoon 2. All looks the same to me.
@Moistnado hey that's great thanks for sharing
Love me some Splatoon, put 1000 hours into #2. But I seriously don’t get this release. Plenty of people still play 2, and its releasing on the same console, so no possibility of a huge graphical upgrade or increase in scale (what most people wanted).
This could’ve been pushed back a year or two and no one would bat an eye.
Sweet box art. As long as the single player is cool and the multiplayer is improved a bit I’m game.
@ItsOKToBeOK in my opinion it was because Splatoon 2 just didn't have the mechanics baked in to handle all of the fashion that they wanted to incorporate with brand partnerships. Watch for Uniqlo and many other brands to partner with Nintendo for Splatoon 3 after launch.
Animal Crossing handles furniture partnerships like IKEA, while Splatoon 3 is the perfect vehicle for apparel partnerships with fashion brands.
as cool as this is, this feels a little too similar to splatoon 2. here's hoping that there's enough new stuff to make it really stand out. Though the new world, weapons, and boxart are really cool.
People jumping the gun way too hard to judge this game as being more like ‘DLC’ when it’s still so far away from launch.
@-Green- Just ignore those people, they were going to say these things no matter what. The third standalone game in this incredible series is going to be well worth the wait and September cannot come soon enough.
One of the most brazenly inventive shooters of the last decade gets a third release in 7 years and its right to exist is questioned.
Most other shooting franchises get beige annual sequels and nobody bats an eye.
Instead of tinkering around the edges by changing the world, weapons, mechanics, story, etc. why didn’t they change the…
I’m not sure what else you’re supposed to change, but why didn’t they change that!?
@Maxz Well said!
Dang people are calling this game dlc? I get it it’s very similar, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I think some degree of pessimism is warranted, considering pretty much everything we've seen so far in terms of gameplay modes and features are drawn from older titles. It's pretty bad when they're trying to sell you on a new game by hyping up the inclusion of a gameplay mode from the previous title.
Of course, there's plenty of time before launch, so let's hope Nintendo starts emphasizing the NEW stuff that'll make this $60 sequel a worthy upgrade.
@Snatcher
That’s how things like the Wii U came to life
I get your point and agree, but just couldn’t resist.
Not feeling the box art. There is just to much going on. Sometimes less is more.
@blindsquarel fair.
I’m still trying to see what’s different in this than in Splatoon 2 that warrants me purchasing it at the launch price.
Other shooters like COD have different story/campaigns every time they bring a new version. Multiplayer modes never really change from the staples (capture the flag, death match, team death match) on any shooter, accept the maps being played on.
I’ll await a review.
I can’t remember the last time I saw hand drawn box art, every image on game packaging these days is computer generated.
All those with the dlc patter, very original, very innovative
I’ll get it eventually but I really wish that Order had won. Nothing I have seen so far is particularly exciting looking to me. That being said Splatoon is the best shooter on the market imo.
Awesome boxart, awesome game. Can't wait. 🤗
@Laxeybobby new maps, new abilities. The campaign will be stand alone like before and the coop mode I also new/enhanced.
There's enough reason
According to the official Splatoon 3 section on Nintendo's website, only off-line play data is supported by cloud saves...that does not bode well for me.
On-topic, the colors are nice but the cover seems quite busy, less would be more.
I would have been happy if there was no such thing as Splatoon 2 and 3. Nintendo could have just remade the first game on Switch and then added updates as DLC every couple of years. There's absolutely no need for multiple games in this franchise.
Also, for the love of god, please include the ability to transfer save data in this game. I really don't love the idea of losing all progress if my system bricks.
@ChameleonBros It's supposed to be chaotic.
The ignorance in this comment section is ridiculous. I've seen plenty of new stuff do far in the trailers that'll completely change the dynamic of the game and make it feel very different from Splatoon 2.
@Ralizah Quite normal. People don’t get excited for new things in the same way as they do for more of the thing from before. It’s why the most watched stuff at shows like E3 are sequels, rather than new IP.
Yeeeeeeeessssssssss
If the singleplayer doesn't stray away from boring old platforming, or if the game doesn't offer alternatives to online multiplayer, then I probably won't buy this game.
@Maxz needs a new mode (which we don't know it WON'T include), along with 900000000 new weapons, stages, and clothing combinations. Top it off with 200000000000 new characters and maybe we'll call it a sequel.
honestly the dlc model really could fit splatoon, but its need to have an ever growing story with new scenarios hinders that. not that its a bad thing, but it makes me wonder why people give splatoon a hard time when many other fighting/shooter game sequels have a similar approach with less backlash
it could be the standard fans have set on the series, expecting one game to define that generation than having a sequel on the same console. games like mario kart and smash get praised for being more of the same when you could easily argue their new gimmicks couldve been done last gen too.
idk splatoons focus on world building and character development does warrant sequels imo, but its hard to say what sequels could do to get rid of this negative stigma. some people do just want sequels with new weapons, maps, and modes, but time will well how much it speaks to the general public
@Farts_Ahoy
How is that DLC? How can you even say, it's DLC?
@Moistnado
You clearly haven't played both.
@Orokosaki
There was that small game called Breath of the Wild.
But really, it shouldn’t be too surprising that computer games generated by computers have computer generated images for their box art, for the most part.
@Farts_Ahoy It wasn’t necessary, but it was still a nice touch.
Nintendo fanboys: We don't want dlc for Mario Kart 8, this should've been a new game!
Also Nintendo fanboys: We don't want a new Splatoon game, this should've been dlc!
I'm sure some of the internals of the game have been changed. Rendering engine. Networking code. Possibly match making code.
Sometimes there are real "structural" reasons why a new release is warranted, or even required ... Outside a general patch.
That said, I do find the timing odd. I was certain this would have been released along a new hardware model...
@Snatcher basically for most people a true sequel is whern the game isn't recycling same graphic engine, maps and models. So for example God of War Ragnaroc is pretty much DLC for many people and not a true sequel to critically aclaimed GoW 2018.
@dimi I guess majoras mask isn’t a new game in any form, and it was dlc before dlc I guess lol.
I hope they are holding back some surprises... Maybe a whole yet to be revealed new mode. I love Splatoon enough that I'll buy this regardless, even if it is just new maps. But based on what they are showing here, I have to add my voice to the masses complaining how similar this is to Splatoon 2.
@Devlind
One is an 8 year old Wii U game and the other has a original entry on switch. They are really not comparable.
I'm content. Colours are ok and the picture is fine.
It's actually fairly good.
God I can't quite place why but this looks incredibly fake.
I was hoping this would release earlier in the summer but I’m still excited! Day one download for me!
@Farts_Ahoy Is the Breath of the Wild sequel going to be DLC as well?
@SpiraI @blindsquarel And Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Game series get new releases that's very normal everywhere. But talk like "this should be DLC" is exactly why we don't see games like Super Mario Odyssey 2, or Arms 2, or MarioKart 9, etc.
All these this should be dlc comments but without really knowing the changes how can you tell.
I dot want Nintendo permanently stuck into a game that's 5 years old, like development wise that really could prevent new ideas, improvements etc
Also If dlc was announced it would be then be all about I hate dlc, too expensive, should've free, anti consuerisn, I never play this game anymore, comments
The switch has had a long land still going life cycle we are going see Series sequels on same hardware like this and BOTW2.
5 years on seems fair its not levels of say a fifa every year.(though that sells )
@Snatcher well thats debatable. It was completed in less than a year, it made heavy reuse of assets and character models from Ocarina of Time
@dimi That’s what I was saying, is it wrong for splatoon to do it if majora did it, and was loved?
