Since Nintendo announced it would be closing the 3DS eShop earlier this year, we've been keeping our beady eyes on the little handheld so we can complete our digital libraries before the Big N pulls the plug.
If you've been following along with us, you know Sega / Atlus has been discounting their 3DS catalogue pretty generously in the US. This sale has caused a big kerfuffle in the 3DS eShop chart. Last month's reigning champion Pokémon Crystal has been knocked off the top spot Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, Atlus' fantastic time travelling turn-based RPG.
In fact, it's almost an entirely different list with Sega and Atlus games taking a stranglehold on the charts. Only three games in the top 20 are not Atlus / Sega published or developed, and all three are Pokémon rereleases!
Shin Megami Tensei IV and its sequel, Apocalypse, Persona Q and Q2, and multiple entries in the Etrian Odyssey series are some of the big highlights. Check out the full list, courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
1. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
2. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
3. Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth
4. Pokémon Crystal
5. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
6. Shin Megami Tensei IV
7. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
8. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
9. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
10. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
11. Etrian Odyssey Nexus
12. 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2
13. Stella Glow
14. Pokémon Yellow
15. Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure
16. Etrian Odyssey V
17. Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight
18. 7th Dragon III Code: VFD
19. Etrian Odyssey IV
20. Pokémon Red
If you live in the US and want to grab some Sega / Atlus goodies, you've got until 17th April - so hop to it! And let us know if you're stocking up on your 3DS games before the eShop closes in the comments.

If you get these games on the 3DS eShop, don't forget to launch them and get the DLC for them too! Remember that 3DS DLC can only be browsed in-game. Thankfully Atlus games tend to have the DLC menu on the title screen.
(which is better than Fire Emblem, which forces you to progress the story a significant amount before unlocking the DLC menu...)
I wish these games would be discounted for PAL systems as well. There's a few Atlus games I'd love to try, but they either don't have a physical release or the physical is really expensive
God, Crystal isn't in the top spot. That's new.
Let's hope this sale comes to the UK, though I have my doubts now. Even if it does, SMT IV:A and Devil Survivor 1 never seem to get discounts now anyway.
Big ups to Radiant Historia, that's in my top 3 RPGs on the system. Absolutely tremendous game, and yet barely anyone played it!
@SwitchVogel I agree so much! It's one of my favourite JRPGs across all systems, massively underrated. Glad at least some more people are finally going to try it. Only took the 3DS eshop to close down lol
The 3DS is the ultimate SMT system.
Thank you Atlus (AND ESPECIALLY CAPCOM) for bringing all those awesome 3DS sales to us in Europe lately!
(I could not be more sarcastic than this)
@DrJoson yeah it's kinda stupid we don't get the same treatment, especially because a lot of Capcom (looking at you MH Stories) and Atlus (everything published by Deep Silver, but also others) physicals are so extremely expensive in EU.
You should have seen how big of a smile I had when I got a new Etrian Odyssey V recently for 45 euro, and even while it has a UGLY and BIG German USK logo, I was nearly in heaven that I could get this game without losing a kidney.
I picked up quite a few. Got everything now other than Strange Journey.
🙋♂️ Guilty as charged. I had a goal of reading NL to help me figure out which ones to get, but Morgan Sleeper convinced me to get all of them.
G'Lord some brilliant gaming and great memories up there. Still have many of those games.
@SwitchVogel I really need to sit down and play it one of these days but keep forgetting about it. I've owned a physical 3DS copy for a couple of years now but keep on putting it off.
I'm definitely a part of those sales, I upgraded my 3DS's memory card and stocked up on so many Atlus titles. Hopefully these numbers inspire some other companies to do the same before the big close.
I grabbed the few games I don't own physically from them at higher sale prices over the last few years, haha. Should have waited.
The real question is, why aren't more companies putting their digital 3DS games on sale? There's absolutely no reason not to at this point. It's not like they'll be making any money of this stuff once the shop is closed.
Still thinking on which SMT and Etrian Odyssey games I should pick from this list since there are so many.
Already got Radiant Historia though, and looks stunning.
You’d think Atlus is seeing the demand and will offer a collection of sorts
Good. Playing Radiant Historia should wash the filth of chrono cross outCHA.
It's a great game. Pretty sure I got everything except 2 rare drops before I finally put it down.
@mcdreamer @Rayquaza2510 Don’t give up. I have bought all of SMTIV:A, Etrian Odyssey 1, 2 and Nexus, Radiant Historia, Stella Glow and Devil Survivor 2 on sale in the EU over the past couple of years or so. They will come again - but they’re never seemingly on sale at the same time as the US. Wouldn’t surprise me if they go on sale here the moment the sale ends for America.
The only Atlus title that never seems to go on sale is Overclocked. It has literally never had a price drop on the EU eShop, according to PSprices. Not once. So I wouldn’t bother holding out for that one.
To be fair, Radiant Historia was one of the best jRPGs I've played on the 3DS. I teared up watching the ending again these past weeks
@EarthboundBenjy
Don't forget free DLC as well! The Monster Hunter titles have a whole suite of content that you need to download from the menu, be sure to grab that before it is gone!
Likewise, Fire Emblem Warriors has the alternate language packs.
@BispoSnake All of them plus Stella glow!!
These games are fantastic, very cheap with these offers, so buy them all to avoid dissapointment. You will not regret it!
Definitely rounded out my SMT collection this time around. Bought a used 2ds during their last sale for this purpose alone. The 100 dollars was made up for immediately with eshop discounted purchases. Finally playing strange journey.
The sales definitely help, If only Nintendo realised they could still make money off their 3DS games and put them on sale.
Picked up Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 and Persona Q2 to complete my Etrian Collection. Now I'm a happy dungeon cartographer.
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology is a 10/10. Every Rpg person should play this. I played the DS version back in the day. Cant praise this game enough.
I have an unopened launch edition radiant historia but I’m not sure if it’s worth $10 to not have to open the game to preserve its value. Not interested in any of the others. It would take $5 or less for me to buy any SMT games
The Atlus games need a discount in Europe.
@Gofixmeaplate I'm in the same boat with SMT Devil Survivor 1 and 2. I have all the SMT games physical but my devil survivors are sealed and I don't really want to open them.
The rest of my Atlus games are open, so not worried there.
Any recommendations on the Sega 3D games?
I got SMT4 and 4 Apocalypse from the Atlas sale, and i gotta say, having fun. If you wanna pick an SMT game if you're now to the francise, however, pick Devil Survivor Overclocked. It's an amazing introduction to the series as a whole..but the rest of the franchise is kinda bs at times so do be careful. Whatever you do, don't pick up Strange Journey afterwards, that's so much worse when it comes to difficulty. It's on an entirely other level.
I picked up the missing Atlus RPGs that I was missing. Sale was too good. Price for physical is getting out of hand.
I also recommend getting the Etrian Odyssey games.
Not a big surprise here considering the great sales they have going on right now. I picked up SMT4 last week and have already played 11 hours of it. That's crazy since I wasn't even sure I was going to like an SMT game! Plus my attention span these days is terrible! Would love to see more re-releases/remakes of these SMT games stuck on the 3DS.
Not sure about picking up the Etrian Odyssey games, I don't really know anything about them.
I bought physicals of every numbered Etrian Odyssey at launch, but never tried the remakes. I suppose now would be the time.
Living in Nz is tough, don't get Strange Journey or Devil Survivor 2 I believe on eShop
I just bought this game cuz of this article. Never heard of it before, but it sounds interesting! Looking forward to checking it out.
@BispoSnake SMT IV is one of my favourite RPGs ever. I didn't like Apocalypse very much, but Strange Journey is also really good. As for Etrian Odyssey, they're really good games, but kind of similar. I couldn't get into EO IV for some reason however, so that one is different I suppose. Maybe because it was the first one on 3ds?
Atlus is cashing in on the closing of the eshop. Good on them for dropping prices significantly to get some final sales. I'm not a big Atlus fan by nature but I was able to pick up SMT IV, Apocalypse, and Radiant Historia for less than $50 on the Canadian eshop. Buying those three games physically would be close to $250.
Stella Glow... Good to see that one getting some love!
I picked up Radiant Historia a few months ago. It's amazing and I definitely recommend picking it up. For a lot of these Atlus RPG's, if you miss them on 3DS, I'm not sure that there are close equivalents on Switch. Sure, SMTV and Nocturne is on Switch, but they play a lot different than Strange Journey and Soul Hackers. Etrian Odyssey was so specifically designed around the DS/3DS, I don't know that they will continue at all. Meanwhile, Pokemon is pretty much Pokemon. Unless you just want to "catch 'em all," I don't think you're missing out on anything unique if you pass up a few.
Some absolute bangers in that list. The 3DS was an excellent RPG machine. Sad to see it go (and me to grow so old)!
I am still playing Devil Survivor Overclocked after two years, there are 8 endings in this game alone.
