Re: Quiz: Which Of These Games Is On Switch?

Takoda

Is overwatch on switch?
No, it was taken off the eshop.
Is super mario sunshine on switch?
Ha, it got taken off the eshop too, you won't get me twice!... wait, this one is still considered on switch, even though you can't buy it anymore? I'm out!

That aside, always enjoy these quizes.

Re: Random: Fans Create 'Nuzlocke-Style' Mode For Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Takoda

Animal crossing is by design already a game about doing tasks that get tedious and samey for me very fast instead of deriving much relaxation from me, but goodness this just sounds like it'd make the entire game a slog to start up every day. I like pokemon nuzlockes because the games are way too dang easy, but since AC doesn't have that issue this feels a bit needless.

Re: Feature: Nintendo eShop Selects - December 2022

Takoda

I liked lil gator game lots, but it's mostly the winner because I played inscryption on pc already. Also a great game, even if not every... 'style' sticks the landing. But lil gator game was great, mindless fun for how long it lasted. I'll get to chained echoes some other time on sale.

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

Takoda

Phew, quite the debate here, of course. I just go with physical for games I want physical and digital for most indies. Sometimes I buy physical just for the heck of it or because I find them at a better price than digital sales offer, but just going with both always seems like the best answer. Why limit yourself to one of the two if both is an option?

Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle

Takoda

I had a pretty good year and the next one's shaping up to be a great time too. I have such wide interests in games that I'm never really without something to play or look forward to eventually, and switch is the perfect platform for me because of the cozy portability combined with being able to just sit down on the couch and game on tv when that's free. So yeah, I'm satisfied. Admittedly do want a ps5 for the more graphically intense games that neither my laptop or switch can handle, and I just don't like PC gaming, the hassles, how it feels. So once I'd get one of those I'd be set haha.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Alternative Game Awards 2022

Takoda

What constitutes a ‘best soundtrack’ is a rather empty title anyway. Sure, XC3 had good music, but hardly the best for me. That’s not because it lacks quality, it’s because I personally found more enjoyment elsewhere. You can’t argue that it’s bad, it just isn’t, but doesn’t have to be the best necessarily. I enjoyed and still listen to Sonic Frontiers music. XC3 I yeeted right into the ‘forgettable’ lane. XC2 has it beat anyway so maybe it’s the comparison plus the fact the game wasn’t as good for me… at least it’ll make for excellent study music! Besides that, music elitism is just plain dumb anyway.

What I personally disagreed with most is best box-art. Baba is you? Really? It’s just such a ‘nothing’ box art to me. It doesn’t really draw me in or say anything, but I guess that’s admittedly hard with this game. Pokemon legends arceus, nier:automata( on switch specifically), triangle strategy… all better picks to me.

Re: Feature: Game Of The Year 2022 - Nintendo Life Staff Awards

Takoda

Sonic Frontiers or Nier automata for me. I thought Xenoblade 3 was going to take the crown easily but man, a good game but just such a disappointment to what came before. So the other two definitely gave me way more meaningful experiences, along with some good indie games.

Re: Review: River City Girls 2 - The Girls Are Back With A Strong, Albeit Safe, Sequel

Takoda

@Snatcher I can agree with this fully because, like I pointed out, a lot of the points that annoyed me just kind of vanished with a buddy. Too many enemies? Not a problem when you have twice the firepower. Spongey bosses? If you can deal twice as much damage together it goes faster and it's more fun. Co-op can really make or break these experiences... I'll keep that in mind if I ever end up going back to scott pilgrim probably, since I actually bought that one.

Re: Review: River City Girls 2 - The Girls Are Back With A Strong, Albeit Safe, Sequel

Takoda

@Snatcher Honestly, I might've just kept powering through because I was having a decent amount of fun with slight annoyances here and there, but since my buddy isn't often available to play with I figured I'd try the rest of the game alone and nope, those bosses quickly killed off my interest to keep going on my own. Such a bummer too because the first time around the cutscenes are so lovely but every time after they're a curse.

Re: Review: River City Girls 2 - The Girls Are Back With A Strong, Albeit Safe, Sequel

Takoda

Tried the first one on the trial period and god, it reminded me why I really dislike beat-em-ups most of the time. It was a decent bit of fun in co-op, to my surprise, but by myself it was just such a slog whenever I'd hit a boss that just takes too darn long and just ignores guarding anyway. Having to sit through those admittedly beautiful cutscenes all over again each time just made it a slog that I wasn't willing to put up with... and if this is just more of the same then I'll steer clear. Maybe the genre just isn't for me, and that's honestly fine, I'll admire the artwork from a distance. : P

Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Excited About Next Game, Promises Even "Greater" Experience

Takoda

@FishyS Well, they are sadly well known ror trying to please everybody and in the end pleasing nobody, but as someone who had the time of his life playing Sonic Frontiers and them seemingly finally sticking to their guns, to a formula that they can polish up and develop further instead of changing it up for no reason all the time, colour me a lil more hopeful than usual with the blue blur.

Re: Celeste Creator Shares "First-Look" At New Title Earthblade

Takoda

Probably will like this more than Celeste gameplay-wise, I despised chapter 9 for its hard difficulty while giving very little in way of interesting story. I really need that drive, just getting some crystal heart for the sake of it after hours of suffering isn’t something I want to brag about. The main game, however, was an amazing experience, so even if I like this one conceptually more, I do wonder how they could even hope to rival Celeste’s narrative with a more open structure not based around that ‘challenge for the player’ intertwining with ‘challenge for the character’… then again, they’ll probs try something entirely new here, retreading old ground in narratives loses the spark easily. Looks great either way.

Re: It's Official, Hades Is Getting A Sequel

Takoda

One of those games everyone will go crazy about… but I can easily wait it out, haha. Hades was good, but the inherent repetitive structure and ‘drip-feed’ will always be an inherent flaw. For me personally, that is! But nothing in Hades’ vibe warrants much of my excitement. It’ll be good, just like the first one was, but looking at this trailer, it feels like more of the same… and I really don’t need that in a genre that is, by definition, always ‘more of the same’. At least it’s clear that no matter what, there’s bunches of quality poured into this once again, and you can never call that a bad thing to see more of!
I’ll get to it when I get bored in a few years, finish one run and then never look back. The best way to play roguelites without burnout.

Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Dominate With Over 2.5 Million Units Sold

Takoda

‘What a performance’ might have been either the worst or best exclamation to use for this one, haha.
Either way, I don’t think they deserve it, not even a little bit, despite enjoying my time with it. Anyone who thinks this is okay just because the glitches haven’t happened to you, the stuttering and inconsistent framerate cannot be avoided, and in a franchise like pokémon swimming in money, we’re allowed to expect so much more. At the very least I hope this is a signal to pokémon that yes, we like this new open world way of playing, but just put in more time and don’t rush it out every time because it’s just embarrassing at this point.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Crowned Nintendo Game Of The Year At Golden Joystick Awards

Takoda

@Cia I will humbly disagree on best narrative, didn't deserve that one at all in my eyes, but I do genuinely wonder which soundtrack won over xenoblade 3... even if that's just more of a taste thing. The XC3 music didn't blow me away personally, but you can't argue that it wasn't well done.

Even if I rolled my eyes at legends arceus winning that spot (Even if I loved the game!) XC3 was definitely never a serious contender for it in my eyes.
I'm in the minority, clearly, but opinions be opinions : P

Re: Pokémon Fans Vent Frustrations Online About Scarlet & Violet's Technical Issues

Takoda

Still a fun game, but you have to draw the line somewhere. This is that line. I could deal with everything else pokemon has thrown at me without it hampering my enjoyment that much, but this is just straight up getting in the way of me enjoying myself with an otherwise quite nice experience.
They better patch it up because amazing sales or not, something's gotta give.

Re: Random: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Body-Horror Glitches Are Going Viral

Takoda

I feel like on the deadlines that the pokemon franchise puts their teams under, it’s easy to call it incompetent but I’d just say they do their best with the time they get. Xenoblade 3 looks and runs better, yeah, as does breath of the wild, but BOTW took years of silence and some delays. Don’t lose sight of context, this isn’t a mighty no 9 situation where they take ages and then release something sub-par.

Not like that’s giving them an excuse, if rushing gets us this mess, then stop rushing everything, pokémon!

Re: Soapbox: Paper Mario: Sticker Star Was When The Series Came Unstuck

Takoda

Funnily enough I started with sticker star, and only beat it because I was so young at the time I just had so much time to deal with the weird design. Nowadays, ehhh, might not have pulled through. I finished color splash and origami king and for some reason the very first paper mario couldn’t hold my interest for long enough to finish it, even if I plan to someday. It’s hilarious to me that I played and relatively enjoyed all the ‘bad’ or ‘out of touch’ ones and can’t be bothered to finish the older ones even if those are praised far more, haha. I still plan on going back and finishing them but they really aren’t anything special if you didn’t grow up with them, I bet. Would love to be wrong though when I finally finish them proper.

Re: Review: Sonic Frontiers - A Bold But Ultimately Failed Attempt At Something New

Takoda

I'm loving it, even though the switch version does indeed look quite ugly at times. I'm just having too much fun playing the actual game to care much about pop in and the like, and it runs consistently enough for me. Also haven't had many of these glitches happen so far, so I dunno, maybe I'm just lucky. I got it on pc first but random bouts of slowdown made me go to the switch because well, I just generally hate how pc gaming always feels like mixmaxing things because of my rather weak hardware. At that point the switch is a lot less of a headache even if it does look less pretty. A review is just one person's opinion anyway, and in this case, my opinion differs quite a lot. Sure, it's far from a 10 or even a 9, but a 4? Nah.

Though for people who aren't fans, definitely more of a 6 or 7 at best, it does a lot of amazing things I've wanted to see for a while now as a sonic fan writing-wise, the vibes are great, the gameplay is pretty dang fun, but it is generally rather unpolished and needs some more time in the oven.

Re: Poll: One Year After The DLC, Are You Still Playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Takoda

I always give animal crossing another try, but it never manages to keep my interest after the 'campaign'. I need something more to work for than just... making an island just for myself. Multiplayer could maybe motivate me but since nobody I know played it I just stopped caring very quickly. You can only catch bugs for so long, right, when all the villagers could be card board boxes with voice lines and there's no goal left to work towards.
