Re: Mario Kart Tour Is Looking Squeaky Clean In The Upcoming 'Vacation Tour' Update

Takoda

@Sonicka A great idea, honestly, and would be much more interesting than mirror mode. A little bit more work for some tracks but they could make it work, I'm sure. Like if there's a ramp, they could have an updraft for the gliders there instead.
I get why it hasn't been done, it's more work than just mirroring the course, that's essentially free content since you just flip the course around, but it'd be so much nicer.

Re: Rayman Returns In Upcoming Mario + Rabbids DLC, Out This Month

Takoda

Looks like a more creative setting than what most of the main game had or even the other DLC, and I like Rayman returning, but hoping the battles are a tad quicker or at least more challenging. Here’s hoping there’ll be more visual humor and less beep-o narrating jokes written for toddlers.

Re: Koei Tecmo And Gust Announcing New Atelier Game Next Week

Takoda

I feel like Atelier might as well be oversaturated at this point with just how many of them they’ve made, kinda like picross, just the same thing over and over, but well, if people enjoy playing them, I guess they’ll keep making ‘em! Didn’t really get into it when I played the first Ryza but I figure I’ll give it a second chance sometime to win me over.

Re: Video: We Share Our Thoughts On Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom After 100+ Hours In The Game

Takoda

I’m of the opinion that if you put ‘zelda’ on something, people will act like it’s greater than it is and need some time to cool off to be critical of the game like they’d be critical with other games. Ocarina of time nowadays, regardless of its influence, is the poster boy for that for me.

Regardless of that, I loved BOTW, and I kind of really don’t like TOTK in terms of story and world. They missed a lot of opportunities to do anything interesting with this being a direct sequel story-wise, it felt even less involved than BOTW’s story and that’s an ACHIEVEMENT. But the gameplay is fun, I like just mindlessly exploring and finding stuff, but its repetitive nature and just the fact there isn’t that much to be wowed by… game of the year it is not. I think a big part is that there’s no real surprises to be had when your world is the same but the changes are nowhere near interesting enough to keep it fresh, and the parts that are new are quite dull. Should’ve had more big sky islands and the depths should have been more than just an inverted hyrule with darkness that you light away by throwing seeds everywhere.

Not trying to hate on anyone else who loves this game or any other zelda game for that matter, I love discussion but I also think it shouldn’t come down to ‘I LOVED IT, I’M RIGHT!’ ‘WELL I HATED IT AND HERE’S THE REASONS WHY I’M RIGHT!’. It’s a little too easy to fall into that hole, but yeah, I’m still enjoying playing it so I’m winning even if it’s not as great as I hoped it would be. Onto pikmin 4!

Re: Soapbox: Getting The Master Sword In Tears Of The Kingdom Is Zelda At Its Best

Takoda

I got the sword after finding every tear and I didn’t feel much throughout that journey, so I didn’t feel much grabbing it either. It was empty spectacle for me, and I bet it would’ve been cooler if that story was better or if I’d randomly stumbled across it. Then again not many master sword moments to compare it to because I can barely get myself to finish some of the zelda games no matter how critically acclaimed. They can be pretty dull. Wind Waker did it best from what I remember, from what I played. Definitely felt something there, but here it was just cool. Not bad but not like it’s impossible to do better (for example, might actually help if the sword feels like it impacts my arsenal after I get it instead of just existing until the final boss-)

Re: Feature: Donkey Kong Cymru: The Extremely Brief History Of Welshness In Nintendo Games

Takoda

@JR150 Ahh, like that! Now that is very true, though that might be less an American thing only and partially because they were trying to fit the original Japanese vibe, and catgirls usually have very high-pitched voices there (most of the girls do usually). But just like Riku has a normal nopon voice in Japanese and then a grown man voicing him in English, the liberties they took in this ‘dubbing’ with the voices is very welcome.

Re: Feature: Donkey Kong Cymru: The Extremely Brief History Of Welshness In Nintendo Games

Takoda

@JR150 I have to say, I fail to see how an American catgirl would suddenly be cringey compared to a Welsh one, but I am not American so it’s all the same to me. It’s the specific way of saying it like catgirls can’t possibly sound good with an American VA that cracks me up, haha. I will agree that using more varied accents is always more interesting, but not exactly the end of the world.

Maybe it’s in the sense that imagining Rex without a scottish accent just doesn’t feel right because I’m now used to scottish Rex, but if he’d been American to begin with maybe I’d never have cared that much. I hope that whatever they do next, monolith keeps the localisation full of stuff like this, it’d be sorely missed and it sets xenoblade apart.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Donkey Konga

Takoda

I can’t deal with the japanese and European logo. I know Donkey Kong’s toothy smile is iconic but I’ve never liked it, so anything that doesn’t have that is better. NA it is.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year Of 2023 So Far?

Takoda

Everyone is of course saying tears, but that one definitely didn’t reach the heights it should to be game of the year, no matter what anyone says (in my opinion, of course). Then metroid prime remastered apparently never really clicked for me because that’s another 10/10 game that was a 7/10 at best having finally played it. I’ve played a lot of enjoyable games so far but no real game of the year contenders yet. Sure, I could default to tears because it’s the biggest release but it’d just feel wrong. A good game with moments of greatness, but I’m sure I’ll play something I enjoy more this year. (Or magically remember a game that I forgot about, I play a lot of stuff so I lose track sometimes-)

Re: Feature: Our Predictions For Tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct

Takoda

@LordBakemono I thought Hollow Knight was just alright, and I think that Silksong will probably be the same kind of alright, it just has a lot more hype riding on it. The word 'masterpiece' gets thrown around a lot but in the end, it's just an opinion. I'll be the first to gladly eat my words if silksong blows me away and it'll be worth the wait, it's going to be quality-assured for sure, but won't be surprised either if the hype is a bit too overblown with how long it's been building up. I'd not call it snobby to say that astronomical levels of hype and constant hope for more information might have a lot of people disappointed because they put unrealistic expectations, you know?

Hence why I'll believe it when I see it if this game is worth all that, there's plenty of other stuff to look forward to so that I don't get my expectations too high, and then I might enjoy silksong more than even some fans who've been waiting for it all this time.

I dunno why I felt like replying in such detail, but in short, I hope when it comes out it'll be at least as good if not better than my hollow knight playthrough, because though I wouldn't call it a masterpiece by any means, it's a great game. Might revisit it soon with the vocalised mod they released a bit ago.

Re: Feature: Our Predictions For The June 2023 Nintendo Direct

Takoda

I swear silksong is just going to be a hyper-polished 'just alright' game when it comes out and all the hype will have cracked hornet's shoulders from the weight... but hey, plenty of other surprises to hope for and my backlog is screaming in agony in the background.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope "Should Have Waited" For Switch Successor, Says Ubisoft CEO

Takoda

I played it, but it wasn't as good as the first one and boring as sin (location and music-wise, mostly) and unfunny as hell. I don't know why there had to be spoken jokes that are so unfunny I can't even forcefully chuckle at them when the wordless humor in the animations of the first one was always much more charming. That combined with it just being a lot less snappy and strategic with how much freedom you got and welp, I'm glad I'm done with it.

Re: Poll: Are You Still Playing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

Takoda

I finished it, the story left me kinda disappointed, but the exploration is still decently fun so I randomly pop in, play a little and then move on to play more Souldiers usually. I intend to complete it but it’ll be at a very slow pace most of the time probably. It’s weird to say but… I’ve got more interesting games to play, simply.

Re: Sonic Fans Are Already Really Mad About Sonic Origins Plus

Takoda

@RupeeClock Oh trust me, I’m a big sonic fan and we DESERVE better. We absolutely do. It’s just that I’ve grown used to this, I guess, so I don’t think these things will ruin the added content for me and Super Amy looking generic is the least of my problems, ya feel me? I’d love extra detail but if Super Amy is apparently not that special to them, it sucks but it’s at least not to the levels of ‘the game gear games are full of glitches just like sonic origins was at launch’. There’s a lot worse stuff to be truly angry about, with Amy and the like it’s less so anger at the games as a whole and more so anger at the lack of care for their characters… which also sucks but just less, I guess. It can still be fixed later on.

Maybe this is just a paragraph of me admitting I’ve become numb to the lack of care we get out of Sonic games a lot of the time, huh?

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 17th)

Takoda

The reused map in Totk means I’m really not that interested in focusing much on that (plus the depths being oh so boring to explore for the most part since it all just looks the same) but it’s the perfect game to just turn my brain off, walk around, do some quests, find some shrines… so instead of what I expected Totk being my main focus, it’s just kind of nice as a perpetual side game. Enjoying it more that way too, because that main story is a disappointment and a half for the most part.

Re: Rain World: Downpour DLC Promises More Brutal Gameplay This Coming July

Takoda

It's less so hard to me and more so a test of endurance; but like said in the comment above, it just wasn't very fun to traverse. Now co-op, I think that'd be great for a game like this... if I had friends who are half-decent at games. They struggle to figure out the controls for smash attacks in smash bros so I doubt they could handle this for long.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 10th)

Takoda

@Vriess Lineair, no. Story-driven, absolutely, yes. Stories in games always keep me going and interested, and I felt Botw’s story did a better job bringing the world to life than Totk’s does. Because the story didn’t bring life to the world as I played through it, I now have a big map with lots to explore and find, but lacking a bit of soul to actually keep my interest in a lot of it, ah well.
But yeah, story is a pretty big thing for me and I think most TOTK enjoyers probably just came for the gameplay.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (June 10th)

Takoda

@Vriess it’s not the amount of content that’s the issue for me, it’s something with the story and the mechanics and the overall feeling of the world and characters. There’s a lot less life in the characters and in the main story (which I found so odd since BOTW didn’t exactly put any high standards for story) and the fact a lot of it repeats itself over and over once you’ve seen a lot what the world offers. It’s a very subjective thing and I find it hard to explain in a short way, haha. I’m still enjoying my time with it, this isn’t me bashing the game in a ‘it’s so boring, there’s nothing to do!’ way, but I’m just definitely not in the ‘I’m 120 hours in and feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface!’ camp. I’ve definitely scratched the surface and now I’m seeing how long the rest of the game can draw me in.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Busier Hyrule Is Making Me Miss BOTW

Takoda

The only thing I miss from Breath of the Wild is that its characters felt actually alive (mainly in the main story). Looking back at even Age of Calamity’s story there was more character there than there is here, with only Rauru and Ganondorf as kinda highlights. Somehow that really took out a lot of life from the world for me, not being intrigued by it nearly as much as before.
