Japanese Charts: Etrian Odyssey Origins Sees Strong Debut, But Nothing Troubles Zelda: TOTK

Those Street Fighter 6 number looks low... might have to compare them later to see if that is normal for Japan.

Looking at the Switch numbers, assuming they maintain current pace, should be crossing 30 million sometime in the next 7 weeks, though I am expecting it to slow down, so will probably take a little longer than that.

Remember reading that if it wasn't for stock the Switch would be outsold, now the goal posts have changed, as they always do with Sony fans.

Etrian Odyssey has the potential to become one of these legendary RPG series. It'll only take a fantastic 6th/7th game and that could be a true breakthrough.

Haven't played the new Street Fighter, but I played RE 4 remake and wasn't too fond of it (I think it's way overrated)

Maybe Capcom's current golden age (from RE7 - 2017 and onward) is coming to an end (I thought RE4 remake was quite lazy and even bloated with all the "side quests" etc.)

For those confused. Street Fighter V sold about 40 to 50k physical copies in this same time period in Japan back when that launched. So yeah, it's just not a big series over there anymore and hasn't been for a while.

I'm kinda happy about those Etrian Odyssey sales, still salty about the price though. But yeah, good for that series.

Ha Street Fighter 6 is just a snoozefest. It'll be gone from the chart after June. Tears of the Kingdom is $70 and Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection is $80 and both are Switch console exclusives and both beat vanilla Street Fighter 6 which are $50 and $60 respectively and was multiplat. Gamers don't buy Tears of the Kingdom and Etrian Collection because both are expensive, they buy those cause those games had high values and the feel of completeness to them. Street Fighter 6 doesn't had that same value structure, the game still feels like it's missing something and that is why not many bought into that game yet. A Champion, Hyper, Plus, Super, or Ultra Edition may change that though.

It's honestly a relief to see Etrian Odyssey doing so well.

@steely_pete Reason was that they are trying to appeal to the western market and made Street Fighter 6 more western cultural. The game had a very cyberpunk feel to it which is not the same appeal Japan picture Street Fighter was to be. Regardless I could see why Japan wasn't impressed by SF6. Ditching the Roman Numerals for numbers also made this new entry sound weak compare to previous titles in the franchise.

I wonder if it is possible to port a decent version of sf6 to switch? I’m getting it later but would love it on switch.

@Ryu_Niiyama It's entirely possible, it may still be missing some features but the core gameplay is definitely possible. Capcom was able to port Super Street Fighter IV to 3DS and the 3DS was 6 times weaker than the PS Vita and the PS Vita doesn't even had a port of SFIV despite having half the power of a PS3.

It certainly is possible, SF4 worked on 3DS. But does Capom see that idea as financially viable? Probably not, too much work.

Man, look at those Xbox numbers. Just 328 consoles sold?

I know Xbox isn't big in Japan, but those numbers would really bring some tears. Hopefully not of the kingdom.

@MS7000 Ignore the other guy, Street Fighter historically has never really been huge in Japan, though the number is pretty low compared to say, SF4 back in ‘09. One reason for this could be due to PS5 install base in Japan, on top of other fighting games such as GG Strive being prevalent. Home consoles in particular also aren’t super popular there either. Most of Street Fighters tail carries through western markets and post launch support.

@steely_pete Money and innovation usually talks but when it comes to games coming to Nintendo platform it usually is Nintendo first before anything gets done. I'm sure Capcom just doesn't want to bother Nintendo to do one. Reason why most Street Fighter games got on Nintendo platform to begin with was cause Nintendo approve it first before it could be ported over. With Street Fighter IV we got the 3DS port, with Street Fighter V it's not possible due to Sony's exclusivity, with Street Fighter 6 anything goes. Still we can't rule it out of the woodwork just yet, Street Fighter 6 still had tons of contents coming and some very possible editions may come as well. Heck with rumor of Nintendo's next console in the talks, I'm sure Capcom may likely even work on a port of SF6 for its launch as well. For now, there's no need to worry about Street Fighter 6 not coming to Nintendo yet.

The reason the Switch has been so successful has been games. It's destroying any competitor right now due to an amazing game. Nintendo has no incentive to throw out a new console generation if its current console is still kicking every other competitor's peaches.

Question is, how long will it take Sony and Microsoft to change course? If they both intend to be just 3rd party machines solely then it's only a matter of time before they will no longer be producing consoles.

@MetalKingShield 4 was good, 5 was pretty great, I found Nexus okay, but hopefully 6 rules. Waiting on my HD collection physical.

@MS7000 I think SF6 sales are low here because most physical games in Japan don't get crazy sales unless it's something like a big first party Nintendo game. Guessing most Japanese sales for such games are largely digital now

I remember people predicting SF6 would beat TotK this week. Pretty hilarious that it couldn’t even beat Etrian Odyssey!

I know the internet has a lot of uncertainty around Nintendo for the rest of the year (I mean, surely we can be certain they haven't stopped making gmes lol), but if this momentum keeps up, there could be a conversation about the Switch being the number one hardwre again this year!
