Is it jurst me, or does it seem like there’s less compression in some of the game’s graphics and UI elements after applying the 1.2 patch?
Either way, all versions still suffer from the same old bugs regarding the daily/weekly challenges which are basically Rayman Legend’s endgame. You may still get stuck at a certain point during distance challenges, you can still use the ‘Murfy reset’ glitch to reach endless kilometers in the pit distance challenge, and tying for a diamond cup in a challenge’s leaderboard (top 1%) still screws up the position of everyone below that tie.
Also, the VIP Status for dedicated challenge contenders that was in the XBone and PS4 versions doesn’t seem to be present in the Switch version.
And lastly, clearing the game including the 14 additional Murfy’s Touch levels will leave you with 14 extra Lucky Tickets that you can’t scratch as they were lazy enough to not add 14 more rewards for them.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is still my all-time fav whether it’s it’s 8-bit or 16-bit iteration. Any of the 3D Mario’s that isn’t Galaxy or Galaxy 2 are good 2nd choices. New Super Mario Bros. 2 would be my third choice.
@Paddle1 True. They banned 3DS consoles that went online with Sun & Moon before the official release date. It were only a few apparently, but those had the same culprit, retailers handing out their copies too early.
So just to be safe, if you get a game early try to put your 3DS/Switch in plane mode or just wait.
@EmirParkreiner I agree on that. I bought this as I am a sucker for Touhou games.
After starting it up, it doesn’t inform you very well where to start. The manual button was kind of hidden away from the rest of the menu and the most obvious choice was to start at the training mode which really helped me understand the mechanics.
The idea is to dodge or counter projectiles and either try to charge your spellcard for a finishing move, or try to move closer for a melee blow. A succesfull melee charge will push the enemy down giving you one free hit afterward.
Funny that @SLIGEACH_EIRE hasn't posted here yet, as very little negativity could be spat out on this piece of news.
Anyway, I like how Nintendo is going all out with peripheral support on the Switch, especially controllers. Back on the Wii & Wii U days it was really cumbersome that, for example, a SNES game like Super Mario World that doesn't require all buttons couldn't be mapped to a Wii Remote without using at least a Classic Controller. Same goes for the Pokken Controller, which is supported on the Switch universally whether the game needs more buttons or not.
Raids are being played about daily in my local area. Still an active playerbase. The lack of more frequent updates still kind of annoys me though it doesn’t stop me from playing the game on my daily strolls.
Somehow I guess The Pokémon Company is the culprit here when it comes to slowing down the updates. I know they never wanted to see Pokémon GO take over the main series games in terms of popularity.
I’m a vivid main series player and truly believe the RPG’s can co-exist with PoGo without sacrificing updates. Still, some tweaking and finetuning of features in the main series games would be more than welcome. There’s still too much grinding in there and for every time they reduce the grinding (think ORAS), they bring it back in the next installment (Sun/Moon), then reduce it again (Ultra Sun/Moon). It somewhat annoys me that there are still 1% encounters in a Pokémon game in this day and age.
I’ve been using the Wii U version of the controller on the Switch as well. Works fine and I love it! The Pro Pad DX is just a reskin of the Wii U version after all. I also love that it works with technically any game as long as it doesn’t require analog sticks and/or frequent use of the ZL/ZR buttons. I would’ve played Rayman Legends with it if it didn’t need the Z buttons for running.
@Aerona Sonic Mania is not even the worst example, it still has that album-coverish feel to it with the menu background present. It does miss the title image which is against Nintendo’s recommendation for Switch games.
EDIT: Of course I meant to say it’s NOT recommended to have a menu icon without the game title on Switch!
Compared to Sonic Mania, the overall level design just feels 'blank' in this game to me. It feels like stuff is pasted together without regards to the player's perspective. I'm somewhat of a hobby level designer myself, and it's hard to explain why the design in this footage feels off.
I hope I'm wrong after playing Sonic Forces myself, as 2 good Sonic games in 1 year would be amazing.
@Yosher A constant connection is obviously required to play the game, I wouldn't even consider playing it solely on WiFi hotspots. while your usual GPS navigation app does work offline as long as the static map & route data is up to date enough, the data for Pokémon GO spawns, stops, and gyms is always updating on the fly and can't be done by GPS alone.
You could, however, walk together with that one friend who has an unlimited (or otherwise very big) data subscription. My monthly mobile data limit is 1GB and I have helped some people get into raids to have a chance at legendaries. The game uses a surprisingly low amount of data.
Back when PoGo released I had a 300MB limit and even then PoGo didn't go over 200MB a month with daily walks and play.
I believe this game should be scored (poorly) anyway, with perhaps an updated review in the future.
As for goodness sake, it's a released game and it should be treated as such. I'm so over these companies releasing broken games only to fix them later. Good luck Nintendo themselves are still making an effort to have games working before release.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's a handheld to you. For the general public it's a hybrid. To the individual it can be either a console or a portable too. It depends on how you like to play or use it, that's what makes the Switch stand out in this generation. Calling it just a handheld without at least acknowledging it's TV capabilities is kind of a disgrace to the Switch.
That said, the other consoles can be seen as using 'tablet hardware' too, yet they weren't designed with portability in mind so they lack an internal screen and use beefier power.
I do agree that Nintendo should put their Switch hardware to good use and release a webbrowser and video apps as soon as possible! And while they're at it, they might as well add true voice chatting instead of relaying it through a phone.
Actually, I think the semi-realistic looking New Donk City and your ability to 'possess' some of it's photo-realistic looking citizens in doing things, possibly against their sanity, has a creepy side to it.
The shirtless Mario isn't a problem, just like shirtless Link wasn't. That's just the internet going crazy about things.
If you own and adore the Wii U version, there isn't a lot to gain with this version unless you really like the portability and take-it-anywhere nature.
If you didn't own the Wii U version, you can buy this one blind as either a Pokémon fan or fighting game fan (or both).
I'm personally getting it later. Mario + Rabbids and Rayman Legends eat up my gaming hours, lol.
I don't see what all the fuzz is about concerning nipples or what's even funny about it. I go like that to the beach and swimming pools all the time, so why shouldn't Mario.
What would be funny is to swap the costumes to swimming shorts in the iceworld and vice-versa. Would be nice if they gave Mario a shiverin' animation just like Link in BoTW.
@MariOnline Same here. I played Ocarina of Time 3D on 3DS by lack of games on the system, but never really played any Zelda game before or after that. Until BoTW due to (again) little else to play on the Switch. In the end I was really into it and loved how it broke the usual 'restrictive' nature of Zelda games and made it an open action/adventure type game.
@Neopolss Same came to my mind, yes. When I think iLife, I immediately think Apple's multimedia software pack. If anything, that name would be infringement all the way to the consumer's level.
Ori is such a nice game. I know one of the graphic designers and the level designer of that game from the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 community, where their contributions were among the best user made content.
Seems like Moon Studio's really is finding talented people all over the world!
@In_Ex_Fan In my area, there's still plenty of activity every day. Gyms are switching teams all the time and people are organizing to take down these raid bosses, especially during the weekend.
No the hype is long gone, as expected, but the game is far from dead.
@Tempestryke In that context, PoGo Fest was like you traveled to an US movie theater to see the premier of your fan favorite movie sequel, but can't see the movie due to broken film projectors.
Whether that justifies a lawsuit is for everyone to decide, but I definitely see a point if a bunch of million dollar companies (Niantic and mobile providers) screw up that bad. They need to work for their riches or else face the consequences and deal with them professionally.
To some travelers I believe this is justified, if you paid 1000+ dollars on flights and hotel bookings that is.
I would never travel all the way to America just for Pokémon GO though. And if I did, I would've explored Chicago instead of waiting in line to get into a crowded confined park.
@RadioShadow But as far as I know, Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald used Flash storage for the savedata while the battery only powered the clock (RTC) part. Having a drained battery thus means the savedata still works fine yet time-based events such as growing berries doesn't work anymore. Even if you replace the battery, the date counter from the RTC is reset and those events still won't work unless the new battery lasts longer than the amount of days set on the savefile.
Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen don't have a clock and thus lack a battery altogether.
@AlexSora89 1: Apparently, yes. It'll usually give me around 7 to 10 items instead of the usual 3-ish. 2: Level 40 is the level cap but XP can still be gained after that. However, the higher you get the more XP you'll need for the next level. Level ups gain some rewards, with some premium rewards after each 5 levels. 3: A Pokémon's CP is based on it's species and IV values that differ between each catch. Hatched Pokémon have a higher chance to get good IV's. The amount to Power Ups you can apply to a mon's CP is based on your trainer level, with level 40 gaining you the max. 4: I can't distance feed any of my Pokémon, so this is definitely a glitch in the current version. Also, one of my mon's is in a gym for 11 days before the update came out and I can't see anything on it's status screen or visit it's gym from there. 5: Unfortunately, 50 Pokécoins a day is the max. You get 1 coin per 10 minutes of defense, and will get it automatically when a Mon is kicked out of a gym. It's somewhat easier for more people to get coins now, but this restriction also means that if 2 Pokémon get kicked out of a gym the same day, you won't ever get 100 coins, while you would've got the other 50 if the 2nd mon got kicked out a day later. It's 50 a day max, no matter what.
@QuickSilver88 The lack of an accessible SD card never bothered me somehow. I used to take some 3D pictures and videos and show them to my family on an LG 3DTV, but last few years I've only been using my iPhone for that and prefer it's crisper images over 3D. The few times I did needed access to it, I just used the WiFi access thing they put on, works really well!
And I agree that the 3D mode may look better on the New3DS. I still have it on (with the slider half-way) at all times even though many newer games don't support it.
All in all I don't regret the upgrade to the New3DS, but I still wish they used a LCD screen like on the original 3DS. But apparently a TN panel was needed to utilize the Super Stable 3D.
I got the Ambassador Edition New3DS from Nintendo of Europe. I actually think it's plastic feels somewhat cheaper on the edges compared to the original 3DS I upgraded from back then. Also, the screen contrast is by far less colorful than the original 3DS.
I still think it's a neat console that fits in my pocket and my hands, but I don't think it's the best hardware ever made by Nintendo or even the best 3DS.
I've played Lawbreakers Alpha and Beta versions for hours on PC and don't see how any controller could serve the fast-paced FPS action that it brings. You'd want to play with a keyboard and mouse to get the desired precision and do away with the auto-aim a controller needs. I haven't checked the LawBreakers Discord group in a while, but I know games like Unreal Tournament 3 supported keyboard and mouse on the PS3, so maybe that's an option for the PS4.
But IF I had to play it on a console, I guess the Switch for it's portability would be the best option yet. Of course it has to tone down the graphics, especially the texture quality due to the Switch's limited memory. But we all know the Unreal4 engine is very well suited for such adaptations.
Are people still bothering with the NES Classic Mini? I'm still playing it from time to time, but wouldn't ever pay crazy prizes for it or go for a fake.
Basically, just try to grab a SNES Classic Mini instead, or look for another retro console that actually plays cartridges.
That new icon is kind of outrageous actually. After all, you are looking at the Switch home menu everytime you start up the console and don't want to be greeted by this ugly duck.
The new icon also doesn't follow Nintendo's design recommendations which clearly state the game's logo should be included in the icon.
@BrokenskullZero Never thought of that, but yes, I'm sure it's okay to flip it over so that the screen is down and the vent is up. Still, hot air likes to travel upwards, so keeping the Switch more upright while docked would still be optimal I'd say.
@Arno @AcridSkull I'd still advice to keep the Switch upright or at least at an angle instead of flat on the table, when using any unofficial dock. Airflow is going in through the little vents in the middle bottom, while hot air is blown out through the top.
@Damo Nyko might want to bring some clarity to that. Missing those 2 USB-A ports that are on Nintendo's 'brick' dock might be a dealbreaker to some.
Other than that, if I wanted to play on more TV's this sure is a better option than buying a separate expansive dock from Nintendo. I play on the TV a lot and don't dislike the brick as it's functional standing there like that, but moving the dock around sure would be a pain.
It's still a fun and engaging game. Niantic is doing a pretty good job on it, be it still a little slow on updates. The occasional events that increases spawn rates for different kinds of Pokémon make up for it though!
Though I don't know much players who pay for it, I usually put in around €5 for incubators after each big update, and do the rest with coins I get from gyms by playing the game. They do need to work for their money.
@chrcoluk And yes, games are all English US versions (as they're 60hz), there is virtually no difference from the UK/Ireland release aside from the language(s) on the packaging. You should be able to choose a few different languages for the menu interface just like on the NES Classic Mini though.
At least back then, there were no Dutch language versions of any Nintendo game as far as I know. Germany had some of them translated, but that never happened in the Netherlands.
@chrcoluk Yes, they're both sold out now in just a few hours, it's crazy. I hope you got one. Both NedGame and Bol are only taking new pre-orders when they're assured of new stock, so any succesful order will guarantee you get one.
First 2 Dutch retailers have started pre-orders, nedgame.nl and bol.com they are. Better be quick as their service regarding console pre-orders usually beats the toy stores.
If this had screens just as colorful as the orginal 3DS I still have in my closet, this might've been tempting to buy. But alas, I'll stick with my Ambassador Edition New3DS with it's washed out colors.
@Rumncoke25 Agreed. The current pool of raid Pokémon aren't satisfactory enough to get irregular players to move to a local gym and join in the effort.
I want to see the moment when, say, a Mewtwo egg spawns. I'm sure it will gather more people, as long as those 'Legendary Raid Passes' are easy enough to get for everyone.

Re: Fake NES Mini Consoles Spotted for Sale On The Web
Are people still bothering with the NES Classic Mini? I'm still playing it from time to time, but wouldn't ever pay crazy prizes for it or go for a fake.
Basically, just try to grab a SNES Classic Mini instead, or look for another retro console that actually plays cartridges.
Re: Random: Internet Reacts Badly To The New Snake Pass Menu Icon
That new icon is kind of outrageous actually. After all, you are looking at the Switch home menu everytime you start up the console and don't want to be greeted by this ugly duck.
The new icon also doesn't follow Nintendo's design recommendations which clearly state the game's logo should be included in the icon.
Re: Fresh Wave Of Super-Portable Switch Docks Are Actually Designed For Samsung Smartphones
@BrokenskullZero Never thought of that, but yes, I'm sure it's okay to flip it over so that the screen is down and the vent is up. Still, hot air likes to travel upwards, so keeping the Switch more upright while docked would still be optimal I'd say.
Re: Fresh Wave Of Super-Portable Switch Docks Are Actually Designed For Samsung Smartphones
@Arno @AcridSkull I'd still advice to keep the Switch upright or at least at an angle instead of flat on the table, when using any unofficial dock. Airflow is going in through the little vents in the middle bottom, while hot air is blown out through the top.
Re: Hardware Review: SFANS Adapter For Switch: The World's First Truly Portable Dock
Re: Pokémon GO Passes 752 Million Downloads, $1.2 Billion Revenue
It's still a fun and engaging game. Niantic is doing a pretty good job on it, be it still a little slow on updates. The occasional events that increases spawn rates for different kinds of Pokémon make up for it though!
Though I don't know much players who pay for it, I usually put in around €5 for incubators after each big update, and do the rest with coins I get from gyms by playing the game. They do need to work for their money.
Re: Guide: Where to Pre-Order Your SNES Mini / Super NES Classic Edition
@chrcoluk And yes, games are all English US versions (as they're 60hz), there is virtually no difference from the UK/Ireland release aside from the language(s) on the packaging. You should be able to choose a few different languages for the menu interface just like on the NES Classic Mini though.
At least back then, there were no Dutch language versions of any Nintendo game as far as I know. Germany had some of them translated, but that never happened in the Netherlands.
Re: Guide: Where to Pre-Order Your SNES Mini / Super NES Classic Edition
@chrcoluk Yes, they're both sold out now in just a few hours, it's crazy. I hope you got one. Both NedGame and Bol are only taking new pre-orders when they're assured of new stock, so any succesful order will guarantee you get one.
Re: Guide: Where to Pre-Order Your SNES Mini / Super NES Classic Edition
First 2 Dutch retailers have started pre-orders, nedgame.nl and bol.com they are. Better be quick as their service regarding console pre-orders usually beats the toy stores.
Bol.com: https://www.bol.com/nl/p/nintendo-snes-classic-mini/9200000079774662/
Nedgame: https://www.nedgame.nl/super-nintendo/nintendo-classic-mini:-snes/9477088972/
EDIT: Aaaand they're sold out. A few hours, not record breaking like on Amazon but still way fast.
Re: Hardware Review: New Nintendo 2DS XL
If this had screens just as colorful as the orginal 3DS I still have in my closet, this might've been tempting to buy. But alas, I'll stick with my Ambassador Edition New3DS with it's washed out colors.
Re: Poll: Are You Excited About the Super NES Classic Edition?
I might get one if a local store has it sometime, but will not go through too much effort.
Re: Guide: Pokémon Go Raids, Raid Bosses, Raid Rewards And Much More Besides
@Rumncoke25 Agreed. The current pool of raid Pokémon aren't satisfactory enough to get irregular players to move to a local gym and join in the effort.
I want to see the moment when, say, a Mewtwo egg spawns. I'm sure it will gather more people, as long as those 'Legendary Raid Passes' are easy enough to get for everyone.
