@RetroGames Have to disagree with you on every single point you made (except Prime 4 graphics, I wasn't blown away either but my assumption is it will be cross-gen and improve that a bit), but everyone's entitled to their opinion!
I loved this direct, so many great games and genuine surprises!
3 games for me this week: the original Rhythm Heaven on DS, Zelda Spirit Tracks (one of the only Zeldas I never played), and Star Fox 64 which, unbelievably, I also have never played. Can’t wait to try it for the first time!
I have a small glimmer of hope for this. I haven't enjoyed a Sonic game for over a decade but I did enjoy the high-speed day stages of Sonic Unleashed. It would be cool if they incorporated that into getting from one area of the world to another.
Looks pretty good! In a strictly aesthetic way, I mean. I'll still hold back an opinion on the game as a whole for now. This will be one of the few games where I let the critics' reviews fully decide whether I try it or not.
@eltomo I think one of the things Sonic fans are infamous for is making "fan made" characters by taking sprites or regular images of Sonic and just adding random stuff to them. Like literally using Microsoft paint and just drawing on top of it. Thus the red Sonic with a tennis racket, black stripes, etc. Just google "(Any name here) the hedgehog" and you'll see what I mean lol.
Let me just summarize the things that people are complaining about in the trailer:
Level select instead of open world (like Sticker Star), Some kind of card battle instead of classic PM battles (like Sticker Star), Possible lack of partners (like Sticker Star), Main NPCs shown seem to be generic toads (like in Sticker Star), Giant real-life items seem to be part of battles again (like Sticker Star)...
From my understanding, all of these things were received very poorly by fans. And beyond the good visuals and paint mechanic, this pretty much summarizes what we've seen in the trailer. If they really wanted to get people excited about the game, you'd think Nintendo would have been a little more careful to not focus on everything that people hated about the last PM game, you know? Pair this with the fact that this was just a casual one minute introduction placed arbitrarily in a Direct and it's hard to be hopeful. I agree that it is too early to judge, but I don't blame the skeptics at all for voicing their worries.
Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite game of all time (like some other people have said here). As far as Sticker Star, I didn't loathe it like a lot of the community, but I felt like the sticker mechanic was really unnecessary and even detracted from the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I felt like many fans were really vocal about not liking the sticker system. Like, I thought it was abundantly clear that people generally did not want it at all. This trailer seems to indicate that they brought something similar back into the game... So for that reason I'm hesitant to be excited. I'll give it a chance though, this is just a trailer after all.
I was also underwhelmed. It only makes sense that with a couple slots left, my picks would most likely not be included, so no harm there. But ANOTHER Fire Emblem person.... meh. I feel like that's one slot used up where another character with more demand could have been. Either way, the other choices were pretty good and Sakurai has already poured more than enough time and effort into this game.
I like his emphasis on nurturing new, younger staff to become the future of the company. I'm not one of those who thinks replacing all the senior staff will help Nintendo "stay relevant", but his planning for the next few years sounds solid.
Ah man I loved this game! I stayed home from school with a severe illness one time and played this (and actually beat it) as a kid. I'm all for a remake/sequel.
I like this list! I agree with those who say Sunshine is too underrated and Galaxy (Galaxy 2 at least) is overrated. Regardless, they're all still excellent games in my opinion. I have yet to play a Mario platformer that I didn't enjoy.
The most important tip to me is avoiding clutter in the levels. A huge majority of what I've seen so far is an overabundance of items and enemies. Sure it makes it more "challenging" I guess, but in a really cheap way. Here's hoping that the rating system works well!
I have a feeling that this won't sell very well. All I've done is ask friends and glance around at some forums about the game, and from what I can tell there generally isn't a huge hype building up for it. Obviously I could be wrong but that's just what my gut is telling me.
I totally agree with what I'm seeing here - I just cannot bring myself to finish this game. I have tried at least 4 times and I've even gotten more than 75% through, but I can't beat it no matter how much I try. I have some kind of mental block that keeps me from being interested in it for more than a few hours or something haha.
If it was a Sonic game that included something like the daytime stages from Unleashed, running stages from Adventure 1 & 2, classic side scrolling, or the chao garden, that would be nice. Basically, the elements from past games that really stood out to me. I think they can safely go back to "old" ideas now, they've had way too many new ones that were a flop.
I just want to see a hands-on of the actual game haha. This "blast ball" thing would barely manage to hold my attention for 5 minutes regardless; it's not even close to what I would want a Metroid game for. All I've been hearing is "trust us, give it a chance, it's not even out yet, etc" and all Nintendo has shown is (in my opinion) the weakest aspects of the game.
Seriously, who at Nintendo thought it would be a good idea to show a vague, 1-minute trailer of this game? It MUST have crossed their minds that it was not going to be received well. I don't care about the whole debate on whether or not it will be a good game, I'm just baffled that they presented it in the worst way possible. And then they say "trust us". Umm... Okay?
@Kaze_Memaryu You actually have a great point. I literally just finished playing through Metroid Prime 2 again yesterday and the Federation troops were just terrible. I was thinking the exact same thing about how they ALL died to a small horde of regular Splinters and Space Pirates. They died to the entry level enemies. That's just sad. And now we get to play as chibi versions of those troops... Needless to say you're right, the Metroid Prime games themselves already established that these guys suck, so I'm finding it hard to get excited about a game that features them.
I'm kind of sad that Nintendo has already established themselves as the company that has the "lame and easier" versions of big releases on their consoles. At least it seems to be that way in the view of the general public. They're going to have to present something pretty dang good with the NX to change that view around.
There has been enough of a time gap between the last Animal Crossing and (ESPECIALLY) Metroid games to warrant another full installment for each. But this year, we got some spin-offs. What I'm saying is that in the world of gaming, putting the spin-offs before the AAA titles = putting the cart before the horse. Yes, I think some of the games will be fun, I'm just disappointed to see that some franchises that had potential for blockbuster sequels are being pushed further into the future.
I appreciate any extra characters but personally I'm not on board with bringing back all the characters that USED to be in Smash Bros (i.e.) Snake, Wolf, Ice Climbers. I know they have a huge demand but I'm all about those new characters, especially obscure ones. Geno from Super Mario RPG. His sweet arm cannon, star beam, etc..... No one? Just me? Okay......
I guess it's true that we won't know until we try, but what I really want to know is... what happens if this "Metroid" game actually does turn out to be as bad as so many people expect? Just a big "I told you so" ?
I think I've had my fill of the pouting, anger-filled atmosphere following E3 haha. I'm embarrassed because of the ridiculous reactions. I've had my share of complaining this year as well, true, but as disappointing as it may have been there are plenty of good games to come. An apology from Nintendo isn't really necessary, and we can just consider this year to be nothing special. If people are so against the games shown, don't buy them. deep breath Time to take a break from all this for a while.
There are some great looking games coming out. I plan on buying maybe 2 or 3 of them in the next year, i.e. Mario Maker and Xenoblade. I think the biggest problem is that E3 focused on a majority of what we've already seen. I know that's been said plenty of times already but it's true. I personally don't watch E3 to see expansions on games I've kept an eye on for months. I watch it for some surprises and news on games that we've heard nothing about. No lofty expectations from me, just some fresh ideas from Nintendo that are within the realm of what fans have been wanting. Maybe it's just me, but I wasn't hoping for surprises like Mario Tennis on Wii U, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, or Metroid Federation Force... And after they showed them, I am still largely uninterested. Most of the rest were already shown or mentioned long ago. I completely disagree with the belief that "you're being an immature whiner if you don't sit down and take what's given to you". I was disappointed by what I was shown, and there's nothing wrong with that. As a result, I'll stick to my word and only buy the very few games I actually cared about, and ignore the rest. Simple.
I think it's very reasonable for people to be concerned here. It is definitely NOT asking too much to have better graphics or intuitive controls. The lack of those things isn't something that should be defended. I know it's still in development but it doesn't look like a great start for this game.
This was probably the lowest point of E3 for Nintendo. No one knows anything about the game yet but from the looks of it, it's a board game that requires special amiibo. Honestly who even wants this? It's the most brazen attempt at milking a franchise that I've seen in a long time. I don't understand how the Metroid Federation thing is getting so much hate when there's this sitting in the background. Whatever, I guess if it ends up being just a small eshop game or something then it's not a big deal.
So basically, it's the way Nintendo went about revealing it that's angering so many people? Yeah, seems like a fair assessment. The last Metroid Prime game was in 2007, and after all these years we get a brief trailer which shows incredibly vague gameplay and generic characters. I think it's also pretty fair to say that not many people, if any, really asked for this. With that said, I agree that it could be a fun game in its own right but Nintendo seemed like they were almost trying to get a negative reaction by calling it "Metroid". They made a poor reveal and it's not like we're losing anything (besides some respect) by having this game released. @GH05T I totally agree.
Really good gesture on their part, thanks Nintendo. In the end, I think the whole presentation was suggesting that they're mainly focusing on their "next big thing" and for now we simply won't have any huge blockbusters. I definitely believe they don't deserve the rage they got, but it was a lackluster showing to say the least.
Some weird shooter / sports game got a Metroid label slapped on it
Animal Crossing U is an amiibo board game for some reason
Mario... Tennis? For Wii U. Yay...?
Heavy focus on tons of games that we've already heard lots about
Not even a hint of Zelda U, with the reasoning that it's "not coming out in the immediate future"
I don't want to jump the gun, in fact I think a lot of the games have potential. The 3DS Zelda, Fire Emblem, Yo-kai Watch, etc. BUT, everything else shown didn't have any context behind it. I don't want to hate the Metroid and Animal Crossing games that are coming out but as it stands they have done absolutely nothing to make them look appealing to me. Pretty weak as far as trailers for these games. Also, I'll admit that even the Starfox trailer didn't look all that great. And finally, I'm very annoyed that amiibo is being crammed into every possible Nintendo game at the moment. I know they're selling well, I just personally could not care less about them, especially after the continuous stock issues. I'll wait to see more on all these though before I come to conclusions.
I totally agree with the sentiment here. This has to be my favorite game of all time. I have played every single entry (minus the Japan exclusive MH2) and I have to agree that MH4U is the best.
My dream come true would be a new Paper Mario for Wii U (to make up for Sticker Star in a way), Majora's Mask 3D as many have said, and Metroid Prime IV. Virtual console GC games would be nice too.
