SEGA has been running a somewhat chaotic live stream for its 25th Anniversary Sonic bash (at the time of writing), with delays and atrocious sound being issues early on. The disappointment continued for Nintendo fans when a new Sonic game was announced without any mention of Nintendo platforms.
Sonic Mania is a remix title, in some respects, blending re-imagined classic stages with new zones and gameplay twists. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles will all be playable, with this retro-style 2D entry being a collaboration between SEGA, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games. The trailer only lists it for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
It's not impossible that the NX could get the title and simply be announced after the hardware has been revealed, but that's only wishful thinking at this stage.

If it were coming to the NX it would have been announced for it. Devs are free to announce games for the system. Ubisoft announced Just Dance for the system. People just need to accept that third parties are not coming back to Nintendo consoles.
It could still come for NX, wouldn't surprise me either way really
Gotta go fast... away from Sega.
There's no way this couldn't work on Wii U, but we can hope for an NX release.
It looks great, but this is disappointing honestly. It looks like a glorified fan game with remixed levels.
It's possible that it comes to NX, but I somewhat doubt it at this point. Will buy on my PS4, though the price will determine if I buy it day 1.
I'm a bit disappointed by the reveal. If it gets good feedback I'll play it though
Oh no imagine a 2D platformer skipping Nintendo... now it will only have 5482 other such games to play. Pretty obvious though that it will come to the NX possibly with a dozen more Boom exclusives too. Nintendo announcements for Sega clearly withheld for marketing purposes.
Not releasing this on Nntendo platforms will cost them many, many sales!
A 2D platformer skipping Nintendo, haha, really?
There's no way this game isn't capable of not only running, but selling on NX. They're probably just not allowed to give the announcement until Nintendo is ready to reveal it.
Looks neat. I'll probably get it on PC.
EDIT: I'd like to remind people that this was likely "Big Announcement Zone, Act 1". Act 2 may follow. Like in the "?????????" slot.
It's looks extremely underwhelming.
Don't get me wrong, it looks like very fun 2D platform that calls back the the old games better than Sonic 4 did... but there's nothing here a fangame could not accomplish.
Probably a day 1 purchases for me.
Fire and Ice looks better then this. Too bad it wasn't Sonic Adventure 3. That's what we all want. Does SEGA not know that.
Looks neat but...something seems off. Cant work it out. I saw people super happy but at the same time its new but also...not? I'm not sure.
Oh well. Sleep. Guess its a game for my PS4.
I don't see this as a huge loss. Seriously... How is this game still nearly a year from being released? Is Sega struggling that badly that they can't finish a 2D sidescroller, much of which literally uses design from their previous titles? I mean if it gets the classic Sonic formula right, great, but it doesn't look like an innovative masterpiece, it's more or less Sega giving up on the series and trying to recapture something from 25 years ago. Which I guess makes it fitting for the anniversary title (not that it actually releases the anniversary year).
Sorry, just disappoints me even more than Sonic Boom, at least Sega was taking a chance there, albeit in the wrong direction. If they were working on something like Sonic Adventure 3 as well I'd be less critical, they've hyped this game for too long for this payout. I may purchase it if it's a download/budget title, but... As someone said here, looks like it may as well be a fan game. No, I think Sega literally is making a fan game of their own franchise now...
Well, hopefully it ends up there. I mean, it looks like the NX should be able to run it (assuming it's not potato-powered), and I'd assume that SEGA would be given a developer kit given that they seem to be very close with Nintendo nowadays, so I don't know. As for the game itself, I think it looks good. I mean, I'm gonna have to agree with @Seacliff here in that it basically looks like something that you could do with a fangame, but it at least looks like something you can do with a good fangame. It may not be as good as Generations, but it at least looks leagues better than Sonic's 15th anniversary "present".
Eh, I guess it's neat but honestly I'm underwhelmed. I just want to see a true modern Sonic game. Colors and Generations were pretty good, why can't they make any of their game like those but with Chao?
EDIT: I know saw that Project Sonic trailer and I'm actually pretty excited about it. The game is being developed by the team behind Generations and Colors, the only two modern Sonic games that I would (personally) say were awesome. Hopefully it will end up being good... and give us Chao! Please!
That was the worst presentation I've ever seen. Comical for all the wrong reasons. Sorry I stayed up for it. There has to be an NX version, Nintendo are probably preventing any announcement just yet. It's certainly not because of any technical issue.
@PanzerNomad Correction: Only part of the Sonic fanbase wants Sonic Adventure 3. Another part of the fanbase wanted a 2D game like this. Another part wants a 3D game along the lines of Colors
If it's coming to nx, they could have actually announced that it is, but since they said nothing I really doubt it will. As a Sega and Nintendo fan, I'm pretty disappointed with the stream so far.
This could be the right direction for Sonic. Yeah it does look like Sega is trying to recapture the good ol days but I can at least say I'm actually looking forward to a Sonic game that isn't some crappy 3D game. Guess I'll be picking this up on PS4 or Xbox One.
@IceClimbers That's true.
I think NX can survive w/o what looks to be a $15 download that they'll probably sell episodically over 3 months. Maybe NX will get the total package at the end?
Life goes on.
Hopefully Storm the Albatross can be included later as DLC.
@soupfist I concur--I will be pleasantly surprised if it feels like anything more than a Sega-published fan mod.
Also, this will come to NX, don't kid yourselves.
I honestly think the game looks great. Usually Sonic is at his best when in 2D. To me this looks like the true Sonic 4. Also it would not surprise me at all if it ended up coming to NX Sega is likely keeping quiet until Nintendo officially reveals it
Had Amy Rose (Sonic Advance 1 style) been included in Sonic Mania, I would've forgiven this whole mess of a stream.
Don't leave Nintendo fans hanging on this game, Sega!
Nintendo fans do not need sonic games. Even if Sega has gone far enough to put it on NX, Nintendo fans won't like it anyway.
Do the service for NIntendo fans - why not put it on PS and Xbox instead?
I was really hoping for a Sonic Generations 2, but here we are. This looks pretty...inoffensive? I guess it's like the, what, 4th try to 'recapture' that original Sonic glory?
@PanzerNomad Yeah the Sonic fanbase is ridiculously divided and polarized. Sega can't ever seem to win lol
As for me, all I want is just a GOOD Sonic game haha
@Captain_Toad She's playable in Sonic Boom Fire and Ice. Which I personally think looks better then this.
It'll probably be on a Nintendo platform eventually. I can't make myself believe Sega would deny themselves the opportunity to milk a game once they make it.
@BlueKnight07 Perhaps Wii U and NX both do not have blast processing to run the game.
It looks like the 3DS could handle this.
Even still, NX 3rd party support is looking good.
that's a joke jesus. I mean the WiiU will still be out then. If they're releasing BOTW then they could and probably should feasibly release it on the wiiu
That's disappointing. Game looks awesome. Thank goodness, I have a PS4 and a PC. Still, hopefully they'll be an NX version.
People play freedom planet its a better sonic game lol
@televisions What 3rd party games is on the nx?
@YoshiParty No I want a wii u/3ds/NX version
Leave Sanic aloneeee!!! D:
@therealgamer touché
The NX will likely get this game, but let's be honest for a second here. The Wii U is a system that is on life support with only Nintendo's support, Virtual Console games, and a few small developers giving it a pulse.
Once 2017 comes, the Wii U will be dead once the NX arrives and Zelda serves as its last gasp.
People may not like me being so blunt, but does anyone see a future for the Wii U next year? The only reason why its even getting support this year is to keep fans and Wii U owners happy.
Sonic Mania is also skipping the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. Why? Because those systems are also on life support as well, and will likely be dead next year barring the odd WWE, Fifa, or Madden game.
The Wii U will be dead in 2017, and with it, any real chance of it getting this game.
@NintendoFan64 I agree to that. After all I rather have a good low-budget game than another buggy high-budget one.
I was hopeful.......but the stream hasn't delivered and I'm not impressed with Sonic Mania. I'm guessing it's fun but was thinking there would be more then just that.
Being at the party would have been fun though.
@Caryslan At this point I'm hoping for a price drop. The $300 can't be here for long.
@Seacliff I guess that's one positive way of looking at it. Remember, this is Sonic we're talking about. It could be much, MUCH worse.
It better come to a nintendo console wiiu or NX.
(Sega) "Well, all of you fans keep whining that you want the old Sonic games back. Here you go, we are literally giving you the old games again."
But really, I guess it's the safest move after all the disasters over the past few years.
@therealgamer Um, I never said I didn't want the game on Nintendo consoles. Heck, I said that I hoped the game got an NX release at some point. Idk why you felt the need to reply to me, but whatever.
Meh. I have a gaming PC, so I can still get it, but it's a shame that SEGA waited until after they made 3 Nintendo exclusive Sonic games to make one that's actually good, then not release it on a Nintendo system.
Just like in the 90s!
guess I will just get it for my PS4. My son would love it
Probably don't wanna bring it to Nintendo gamers because it's actually somewhat remotely good.
All the people defending the latest Sonic games might actually stop buying the bad ones if they get a taste of the good stuff.
This trailer just proves that Sonic should had been left behind during his Genesis days along with all the other Genesis IPs cause it seems like Sega doesn't know how to evolve Sonic anymore. I'm interested in this game not because it's a new game but because it feels more like a Genesis title. If anything we might as well just return every franchise to their SNES Genesis days.
Sonic is dead.
Am I the only one who sees this as a fake Freedom Planet?
@JaxonH sour grapes.
I don't think we should count out the possibility of the game coming to NX. Of course they wouldn't show it at the end of the trailer alongside the PS4 and XBOX One logos, as the NX doesn't have an official title or logo yet. Ubisoft didn't talk about the NX on the show floor, as far as I know; it was during a post-show interview when they were asked about it, was it not? We shouldn't make assumptions until someone actually asks them about it.
I'm confused, are these just remasterings of the classic games with new zones or are these remasterings of the classic games and a brand-new game? Either way, I've yet to play any of the 2D Sonic games so you can count me interested.
Boom! New Sonic game confirmed for NX
At least the next 3D Sonic is coming to NX.
If they can confirm new 3D game for NX why no confirmation for this too ? Most likely it won't come to a Nintendo console
Well at least they're not announcing a Nintendo version only to make it gimped compared to the other versions like they did with "Sonic Generations" (and "Sonic Unleashed" to an extent).
@DrRandle
You must be really happy about the 2nd announcement at the end
Huh, Sega plays it safe, for a 25th anniversary title reveal it's underwhelming (honestly it looks fan made) BUT after 06,Lost world and.... ugh Boom, I'm perfectly fine w/Sega playing it safe.
@JaxonH lol
@GreatPlayer
Jus sayin
This looks pretty fun! Whitehead did a really solid job on the smartphone Sonic remakes, so I'm sure this is in really good hands. Looking forward to this a lot.
I'll still get to enjoy this on Xbox One, but still, why this can't run on Wii U or even 3DS (if install base is that much of an issue) is beyond me.
I think it will totally come to NX. They may announce it near the NX announcment
I'll gladly pick up anything with Christian Whitehead's mark on it, that man made, not ported, MADE the iOS versions of sonic 1 2 and CD. He even has Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles working with the optional lock on feature. The only reason SEGA hasn't pushed it through is they wanna hold off as a safety net should '06 hit the fan. Mania looks awesome to anyone with extensive research into Sonic's history, especially his sprite work. This will be without a doubt the best 2D Sonic game in the last 20 years
This looked awesome! Are you kidding? No Nintendo logo on it was bogus, wished it would at least come to PS3/360. Heck. I'd take a 3DS version!
3DS could run this with 3D and probably be the best version, but apparently Nintendo platforms were left out. Not really interested unless they correct this.
Meh
To put a Sonic game of all things on everything but a Nintendo console?
It looks decent, but I it seems weird not to release on the NX.
yes
I feel sad for the blue speedster...sega should just send him out to pasture
Looks good, let's hope it can deliver.
I'm happy it's coming out on PC. Then I still can play it with my Wii U Pro Controller.
I'll be buying it either way but I don't see why we couldn't get it on 3DS tbh.
I'm honestly pretty excited! I'll be picking it up on PC.
This looks absolutely amazing! Sonic is back!
Hey Wii U owners, at least there's still the Olympics Game right?
They devs working on it probably don't have nx devkits yet.
It will come to a Nintendo platform.
Absolutely, no need to worry about that.
Well that sucks. This looks great! This is one of those times I wish I could afford more than the newest Nintendo system. I'm sure there is some goofy reason, but I really don't see why Wii U can't get this. Still jope for NX I guess.
I read "Christian Whitehead" and my interest spiked.
Now this I can get behind.
And, if you compare something even as simple as just the logo in this game and one of the modern Sonic logos, you can see why the modern Sonic games simply leave me cold for the most part, whereas the older games actually had/have some soul to them and leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside:
One leaves me with a smile, and the other leaves me kinda cold.
Judging by the comments you lot must be 12 or something, for those of us who grew up with sonic in the 90s on the megadrive this is what we've been waiting for and with the the help of other studios I think this will be awesome.
Good!
Ok, now this one has my attention!
Strange... my earlier comment from last night has disappeared. I call conspiracy!
Anyway, I think this is one of the best trailers I've ever seen. It's a shame it's not on 3DS as it could definitely run it.
Jools from Renegade Kid has already offered SEGA to port it too, lol.
To everyone saying it looks like a glorified fan game. Well, maybe you're right. But it's by Christian Whitehead - he started off making Sonic fan games till he got so good at it his efforts were better than SEGA's. Think of this as a continuation of the original Sonic engine, or an epic fan game - but with a real budget and backing from SEGA.
@Kirk One of them has attitude!
@Captain_Gonru "just reveal the #$@%#& thing and be done with it."
It is getting to be a bit past the point of incredulousness isn't it? Zelda, Just Dance, Sonic 2017, DQ11 "considered". And we don't even know WHAT the NX platform is. (I'm kind of stuck on "platform" at the moment, due in part to DeNA and Go.)
1 thing I'm not stuck on is my avatar, happens this time every year. It will probably change again soon, though Night Begins to Shine will at least be a theme until we find out about TTG in Lego D.
PS. What possible good reason could there be for this not coming to both Wii U and NX?
I'm bummed by this, but on the other hand.. i take solace in knowing that more than likely, freedom planet 2 will hit the NX later on... and it uses an engine developed by christian whitehead.. the same engine powering this game.. part 2 does i should say.. i don't think freedom planet 1 uses it.
So i am not too worried about this hitting NX.. would be nice though.
@LeRaposa Funny how there have been more third party titles announced for the NX than Nintendo ones, and there're still folks holding on to this idea.
So very excited. So. Very. Excited.
@RupeeClock Gamepad streaming may have been an issue. You see, as much as it isn't hard to develop for Wii U, going multi means you have to take the gamepad basic functionalities into consideration at some point, and that's extra work. This game may have a small budget and they may consider a bigger release like the 2017 game as a priority for going multiplatform. And we can't deny the Wii U is at the edge of its lifetime, with one of its worst years right now. I'd say it would sell twice as much as a 3DS title than as a Wii U.
@LeRaposa pretty sure you're wrong- so you expect Sega to throw up Nintendo's new "NX" logo and show the world before Nintendo does? I don't. What is the new system called? Exactly. So what logo do they put up there.
I'm quite certain this is coming out for Nintendo's new system.
Not even for Vita? Ugh. This is the Sonic game I want and it's not on anything I own.
I can't imagine they wouldn't eventually release this on the NX. Nintendo consoles have always been THE home for 2D platformers. Sales numbers would be too great for them to not do it.
Strange no Wii U, NX or 3DS versions tho.
@ShadJV
Spring 2017 could be as early as April.
The game might already be done or in the final stages of development. Sometimes games are sat on even if completed for awhile so they can release it at a time they think will seller better or not conflict with other games.
The fact that the new mainline Sonic game (fall 2017) is coming to NX and this (spring 2017) isn't confirmed is strange... Unless SEGA knows something that Nintendo isn't telling us.
Considering Sonic CD as one my favorites, this is a must buy for me! It's sooo eye candy, and that music too!
I don't know what's gone wrong at Sega, they're finally making a good Sonic game instead of wasting money on another entry in the failed 3D Sonic series. Christian Whitehead's remakes of Sonic 1, 2 and CD mean I'll be buying this on whatever platform it launches on. Those games are utterly fantastic and are IMHO better than the originals.
I'm surprised at the negativity here, I really do think this looks awesome and with Whitehead at the helm we should finally be getting a Sonic game that plays as well as the originals.
@LeRaposa but project sonic coming to nx
This is such bull that it's not coming to any Nintendo consoles, after Nintendo have allowed them to shovel out such low-quality titles on their systems for years. Maybe that's why they were exclusives...
This is exactly what the franchise needs. I've said it here for years whenever the subject of how to fix Sonic comes up. Back to basics, 2D side-scrolling without the gimmicks. Just give us a new game using the same engine as the Mega Drive games. Like Capcom did with Mega Man 9. I've said it for years. I've even said they need to forget about home console games and just stick to handheld, i.e. 3DS. Nintendo have realised this is where the Kirby main series games fit perfectly, and it's where Sonic's home should be. But instead we get simultaneous releases on the 3DS with whatever gimmick ridden home console game they've kicked out. This game would be perfect as a 3DS exclusive. Now I have to go buy a new console if I want to play it. No thank you, I'll wait for the inevitable iOS port...if Sega don't break the game beforehand.
Ah the joyous pangs of nostalgia. This game looks to be bringing back the best of everything that Sonic is. It'd be nice if it came to a Nintendo console at some point, but even if it doesn't I'll find a way to play the hell out of this game.
Renegade Kid is offering Sega to make a 3DS port!
https://mynintendonews.com/2016/07/23/renegade-kid-offers-to-port-sonic-mania-to-nintendo-3ds/
Sad indeed. I guess I will be getting it for Steam.
Looks pretty nice. I think it could still come to the NX, but we'll see!
Because NX has not a public official name it's obvious that Sega is not saying "Coming to X" at the end of the trailer. Common sense. The atypical thing is when Ubisoft revealed the name of Wii U when announcing Rayman Legends.
No Nintendo platforms are included.
Well...
"PlayStation, Xbox and PC does what Nintendon't"...until Sega announces the WiiU/NX version.
This game is being handled by a small developer who does not have ties to devkits like SEGA does. In due time folks, there will be a NX version. Just not right now.
Could still be coming to NX. So far, only retail games have been announced. Publishers might not be as clear with or able to comment on how download only games are going to be sold on NX. This looks to me like an example of a game you'd find on the eshop first, then with a disc later.
@GamePerson19 Actually, I was.
