After much anticipation, the next console title in the Paper Mario franchise was announced during the most recent Nintendo Direct - Paper Mario Colour Splash.
Equipped with his new weapon, the Paint Hammer, Paper Mario must help the citizens of Prism Island bring colour back to their home.
Once in battle, using your paint hammer, you can paint special cards and "flick" them to initiate combat using the Wii U's GamePad.
The game will launch in 2016 but no additional details were announced.

So excited. Looks amazing to me!
Looks great, though Sticker Star has made me worry about what this game could end up being. I loved every other game in the series though, so there is hope
Looks interesting, if it gets good reviews I'll go for it
I'll be cautiously watching this one. It looked interesting at first, but I saw mechanics that reminded me of Sticker Star a bit too much. I thought after two largely different games we would get one that's more tried and true.
Here's hoping it's a great game.
I am so excited for this! It looks gorgeous!
Don't hear me complaining. I'm an absolute sucker for Mario games, so count me in.
I am actually genuinely excited about this game. Never played a Paper Mario before. Dunno why, but I am interested
Looks awful. I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm not expecting much.
Literally Sticker Star 2
WHY
WHY
WHY
Worried. PM was amazing. TTYD was even more amazing. SPM was meh. SS was... oh god. This at least retains the stage select screen of SS and the battle system doesn't look very RPG-y... plus lack of partner characters... I dunno, my gut is scared. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm one of the few who actually liked Sticker Star, so I'll keep an eye out.
I'm hoping this is more like Paper Mario for the N64 or Gamecube, but I'm getting Sticker Star vibes. I'll keep an eye on it but still on the fence.
Definitely got gimmicky sticker star vibes out of this one (don't particularly mind the sticker star world map)
This screenshot makes me angry and not because of Sticker Star. It makes me angry because I am reminded of PM:TTD and Super Mario Sunshine which I was really hoping were made into HD remakes.
It looks really good, like the aesthetic is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately the last time I said that about a Paper Mario title it ended up being really terrible. I'm excited but at the same time I feel like this is going to be too much like Sticker Star.
I'm glad the Wii U's finally getting a Paper Mario. I was beginning to think it wouldn't happen. It looks great, but then, I'm part of that minority of fans that loved Sticker Star (TTYD is still my favorite, though).
This looks very close to sticker star which has me worried. Which is a disappointing since the game looks so beautiful. Flicking cards?? Can we not? Pretty please??
I'm SO glad that they chose not to learn from Sticker Stars mistakes. The return of the world map instead of being able to roam freely? More or less an exact copy of convoluted sticker battle system? EVERYONE LOVED THOSE, RIGHT?
It's level-based, there's no partners, there's no mention of a real story, and so many Paper Toads. And a Thing sticker. It's effing Sticker Star with lighting effects. Boo. Paper Mario is completely dead.
I'm so torn on this. It looks a lot like another Sticker Star.
I want it to be exciting but I'm just not feeling it. I guess the Paper Mario ship has sailed.
Actually look like an rpg unlike the Wii game so I am excited. I like the Wii game but one like that was enough.
@Ralizah Agreed.
I hope at least they learn'd what worked and what didn't work for Sticker Star.
Did anyone think Paper Mario and de Blob had a baby when they first saw this. I know people are worried with the cards and all but I perfer to see if they fixed Sticker Stars biggest problem first
What a disappointment... Sticker Star 2... sigh.
Nintendo needs to do damage control. Most of their IP's up until this generation scored around 8-10 this generation's averages are around 7 with several games scoring 6's and below...
It reminds me too much of sticker star just looking at it.
Plus I'm completely colorblind =
This might be the first PM game I skip out on. Will wait for a reviewer to convince me otherwise.
POPCORN HERE! GET YOUR POPCORN HERE! Only the freshest popcorn made extra special by the salt of people that hated one game and based on one vague trailer automatically hate the next in the series! Customers who purchased our delicious brand of 'Paper Jam Salt' last year gave us a 10/10 would lap up salt again. Hurry up get your popcorn!
But seriously I didn't like Sticker Star either but I'm reserving judgment for this until E3 at the earliest. Even if it is Sticker Star 2 it surely can't be just as bad, the concept for this makes me smile for this one already.
This sadly is gimmick-loaded. Which is a shame because it looks gorgeous.
Sticker Star I liked, just that it was missing tradition Mario rpg battling, & the stickers to use where, & when were a bit difficult to figure out at times. I am hopeful for this one. I haven't played Paper Jam. I've played the other, though.
I adore the first two PM games, but after that footage I have zero interest right now. I'll check reviews when they get here, but I think I have a pretty good idea what to expect. They sell better than the RPG Paper Mario games so can't complain, but the series has completely lost what made it so great for me.
I'm so dissapointed. It looks like Sticker Star but colour instead of stickers. Why a world map? Why only established Mario characters and enemies? And no partners? I want a true third game in a living breathing world, not 'levels' and gimmicks with probably a weak story. Why are Mario games not epic anymore? Not happy. Hope I'm wrong.
Rewatched the trailer and it has a similar map system to Sticker Star and the cards seem to mirror the stickers a lot. A bit disappointing and kind of a sucker-punch.
Poopy Sticker Star game mechanics = Nintendo learned NOTHING!!!
There are no words....
Paper Mario: Splatoon edition! Buy it now as Sticker Star 2 today! Looks good enough though, can't wait for more details.
Nice! All it needs are some extra partners being announced at E3 to seal the deal.
I'll reserve judgement until release... but it does seem a bit Sticker Star.
Not a good thing.
why are there no partners? why is it not a normal turn based battle system? why doesn't nintendo listen to their fans?
yeah, not sure about this yet.
(can we get Animal Crossing for Wii U, now though?)
I'm not giving them the benefit of the doubt on this anymore. If things don't look more Paper Marioy and less Sticker Starry the next time they show it, this is going to be the first time in 20 years that I skip a Mario RPG* (or second if I change my mind about eventually using one of my Christmas gift cards to get Paper Jam).
*- That's if this even counts as an RPG anymore. "Mario & Luigi, as we showed today with Paper Jam, combines some of the world of Paper Mario, the characters and elements of gameplay there, but brings it into a role-playing game like the Mario & Luigi series." ~Scott Moffitt. Nintendo apparently doesn't even consider Paper Mario an RPG series anymore.
I feel like maybe Intelligent Systems has two distinct groups of people for the PM titles: one group for art direction and the other for game design. Both are good, and art crew just keeps outdoing themselves. Game design crew thinks that they need to keep mixing things up to stay relevant. Why they think this I will never know; it isn't like the formula turned stale after two games. Heck even SPM was good but they just couldn't stop altering and gimmicking up the system and now we have... card flinging. Sigh @TheLastLugia is right though. We should wait till we have more solid info to pass judgement, but I'm not optimistic.
I'm excited. It's an interesting new mechanic for the series.
It feels like Nintendo has done this a lot lately. Starfox is getting a new game on Wii U!? Oh wait, it sort of looks like an up-rezzed Wii game. There's a new Metroid Prime game coming out!? Oh wait, it's just a multiplayer shooter for 3DS. There's an Animal Crossing game for Wii U!? Oh wait, it's just an amiibo tie-in. Paper Mario is coming to the Wii U!? Oh wait, it looks like it has mechanics ripped from the worst game in the franchise.
Too early to judge, maybe, but I have a sinking feeling about this one.
I want to be very hyped for this, but it's not working. I will definitely wait until more info before I pass judgement, though.
On the bright side, Paper Jam I hear is really good and I can't wait to play it eventually...
Y'know...words cannot describe how dissapointed I am. I mean...wow. No really, WOW. It's amazing how much they don't understand what the fanbase wants. Nintendo...do you just hate the earlier games? Are you trying to forget about Thousand Year Door?
So I'm convinced Nintendo has no idea what Paper Mario fans want.
First Super Paper Mario was a Platformer, Sticker Star was soulless garbage, and now Card Battles? R.I.P
So we get Sticker Star 2. Whatever. I'll take that over nothing. I did like Sticker Star, but it was easily the weakest game in the series.
Interesting that it makes use of the gamepad, but there is no release date. Which suggests it could by LATER rather than sooner.
And 'later' clashes with the NX release. This suggests that the NX is not replacing the Wii U.
SPM at least retained decent story elements, with additional characters to play as and partners. Well I only remember one partner mattering, but it was at least something.
I agree it's early to judge but i really hope future trailers price the sticker star vibe wrong.
my poor heart
The game looks gorgeous ! But for the gameplay... we'll see. I want so much (like almost everyone) TTYD 2. We don't have any info so I'll wait to have more news about the combat system, the story, partners etc.
(I'll be praying : no sticker star 2, no sticker star 2)
@WireWare Hear ye, hear ye!
My dreams are crushed. Paper Mario (N64) and The Thousand Year Door are two of my favorite games of all-time. All I have ever wanted Nintendo to do is make a proper third entry... and we get this. To be fair, I didn't hate Sticker Star; it kept me entertained for most of the playthrough. It's just that this left me so disappointed. Watching a company change the core gameplay of a franchise that was successful for its original gameplay mechanics is truly baffling, and I'm sure Nintendo knows what their fans want.
On a positive note, the game looks absolutely beautiful, and the new location is interesting enough. I just don't think I can play through another game like Sticker Star, especially considering my love for the original games.
Angry, entitled fans: F@cking piece of sh* losers of Nintendo, gives us our Paper Mario game for Wii U NOW!!!
Nintendo: Well hi there, our lovely and most dedicated fans, here's something we will deliver - directly - to you: Paper Mario Colour Splash! Aren't U happy now?
Angry, entitled fans: Wtf? This sh**? This is not what we demanded, this is the same old Sticker Star sh** and I can clearly see from this ridiculously short trailer that it's going to suck complete balls. I hate you Nintendo, I won't buy any Mario game anymore for another friggin' 20 years! Serves you right...
Nintendo: Eh? We... ehm... so glad you appreciate our efforts in bringing you what you said you wanted. (be sure not to expect anything else from your lists for a lòòòòng time, ungrateful Western dogs... )
You know, bitter is just a taste, and taste is only personal, so luckily a LOT of people WILL be happy with this Paper Mario with a dash of Splatoon. Cheers...
Looking good
Looks amazing! Is it just me or does the art style seem like 'postman pat' OR 'Thomas the tank engine'? Not stop motion, but the hyper really paper 3d look. Super sweet and slightly retro TV show looking but uber fresh.
CAN NOT WAIT!
YES OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!1!111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think, gameplay-wise, SS's worst problem, was a combination of 1. having a battle system that you could not engage in, unless you had stickers, as well as being a battle system that actually discourages battling altogether, & 2. the right stickers to use @ various points were a bit difficult to know, & a lot of trial, & error was needed. It was a little cryptic. Still, as I said above, I'm going to be hopeful for this. I didn't hate SS. It had some issues, but I personally enjoy it for what it is. This may be the same, or even better.
This was, by far, my biggest letdowm of the entire presentation.
I could stomach Sticker Star as a spin off experiment.
It was a calm, relaxing game that, ultimately, got extremely boring and fruitless.
It actually was stamp collecting - the videogame.
Like i said, i dont mind it, but it getting a sequel is just awful....
Im perfectly happy with an all classic Mario cast, im even ok with no / shallow story. But the gameplay just isnt there.
Utterly pointless battles that serve no purpose other than waste stickers that you need to collect again for the inevitable boss encounter.
That is teh only thing that, in my opinion, needs to change. The combat system. Make it not entirely consumable based, make it worthwhile and not just wastefull.
From the looks of it, it now uses paint instead of stickers, which is just a different kind of recourse you constantly nee dto restock to do stuff.
That was my only gripe with Sticker Star: Tedium.
I really really hope that this was adressed and the trailer was just on the short side. I really do. Because other than that, the overworld concept and puzzle design looks fun, as it was in Sticker Star.
Excited and dissappointed at the same time!
The small bits we got look a lot like Sticker Star.
Can't say anything about party members or anything else yet... too few minutes of video. It looks fairly unfinished still.
The painting itself seems cool, but I hope the paper transformations make a return.
I'm excited! It's clearly inspired from Disney's epic mickey and Splatoon
Looks amazing. AMAZING.
For one, Sticker Star was not a bad game. A bad Paper Mario game? Sure. But not a bad game.
For two, it would make sense some aspects of previous games are retained (such as Sticker Star) considering the same team is making the game as usual. Its natural to retain what works and toss what doesn't.
I will not unfairly judge this game simply because one game in the series, which was actually a decent game, was received very poorly.
Only thing from the Direct that got me excited. Looks a little similar to Sticker Star (was kinda hoping they'd distance themselves from that as much as possible) but I'm fine with the world map returning.
I think this one'll be a solid game. I was a bit let down by Paper Jam.
If anything, at least the soundtrack will be excellent.
Everything in the direct made me excited, but this more than anything! But if course there are people already hating on this game saying it looks like sticker star and stuff...hate stupid trolls/haters -_-
I like the overall look of the game, but after seeing the stickers I'm going to hold my breath on it as I did not enjoy Sticker Star at all. However, if they balance what we wanted from TTYD and what new fans that liked SS want to keep, then maybe it will be good.
I was actually hoping for something origami related, since you could fold paper on the GamePad touch screen.
There seems to be a reverse Star Fox Zero effect going on here judging by these comments. For Zero, people hated (and still do to this day) the graphics but most are in agreement that the gameplay should be solid and fun to play, whilst for this game people are diggin' the art style but are pre-emptively hating how it possibly will play.
Just an interesting observation I've made that I thought I'd point out. Hopefully the next Nintendo game reveal will get the mix right? Who knows.
It looks decent and I'll watch out for it, but the Paper Mario games have never really appealed to me.
"In the Paper Mario series, we always try to bring something fresh to the action adventure genre." - Bill Trinen, 2016.
It's dead, guys. They've forgotten it's supposed to be an RPG.
Let's cross our fingers that it follows TTYD line. I have high hopes, the game was just announced (officialy) today.
Thanks for nothing Nintendo. Make games like this if there is a market for it, but don't use the Paper Mario series for this type of gameplay. People thought Super Paper Mario was weak (it was excellent to me), but it's a dang masterpiece compared to Sticker Star.
I sold my Wii U last summer after Nintendo's E3 showing, and after seeing that Nintendo had virtually nothing left on the horizon for this machine (at least nothing I was interested in). The only game that's made me remotely regret the decision to sell was Super Mario Maker. And now, with this game's mechanics being Sticker Star-like and not TTYD-like, it looks like not even this HD Paper Mario game is tempting me back.
Hope the NX can remind me why I love Nintendo, because lately I find myself more disappointed by them than anything else.
This brought a smile to my face when I came home and read this, however II gotta start playing the 3ds versions. They are on my 'to play' list.
I also don't get the whole 'entitled fans' meme that some people on the internet complain about. Nintendo is selling a product, and people as consumers are choosing to express their disappointment and distaste for said product. There's no entitlement there, and no, you don't need to act as the Nintendo Defense Force and take it personally when people criticize Nintendo.
I am gonna put myself in the firing line here. Paper Mario never really struck me as an RPG, at least not fully. It had the basic battle elements, 1 party member at a time, status effects, and the only part of the game's main draw (Being Mario and Paper) that got into battle was the stage, being a diorama.
The name of the game has always applied more to the outside of battle. Using the way the world is built out of paper to explore, solve puzzles, with RPG battles to make it more than just a puzzle game. But does the fact the game is made of paper really matter to the battles? ...No. It was never really implemented beyond that aesthetic in the battles, because it was always used more outside of it.
I see Paper Mario as more Action/Adventure myself, because I am looking at the series, looking at it's unique selling point that even titles the game, and it never really mattered to the "RPG" side of the game. It has always, naturally, leant itself more to the Action/Adventure half of the game.
Looks good,I'll check this out
This game definitely does have beautiful aesthetics,
Here's hoping it goes deeper...
sniff, sniff... I smell Sticker Star...
I REALLY hope this game doesn't have a crappy story to it...
@EXP On the same token I never understand the Nintendo Defense force comments. Everything has its detractors, yet if you actually like something a company produces you are accused of being a shill. If I wanted the same game ad nauseam I'd just keep playing the old games. I like returning to familiar worlds with new ways to experience them. I also am pretty ok with the developers growing a franchise within their vision. If the game is broken sure I'd have an issue but otherwise I'm happy just playing some fun games. This game may be like sticker star (which I enjoyed...it wasn't the best but I had fun, which is why I buy games) or it might not...all we got was a very short trailer. Why not at least give it a chance before bringing out the pitchforks? And if you find its still not to you liking, perhaps you are no longer the demographic the game is focused on.
@Yoshi My exact thoughts, it looks like sticker star 2.0 in some places
As a man who enjoyed all four Paper Marios released thus far, this one...I feel mixed about this one. I'm glad that Intelligent Systems is trying something new and the landscapes are just beautiful, but my other half is disappointed that (so far) there are no signs of the series' traditional elements (Flower Points, Star Gauge, Partners, etc.). As another user said, I'll wait for more info to be released.
Paint cards instead of stickers...
God I don't know it might be okay guess I'll wait and see.
I'm taking a wait and see approach with this one. I didn't play sticker star because of its reputation, so let's see if this one delivers. It does look beautiful though! Sadly Mario games have just felt too sterile lately for my liking.
This is most definitely a Sticker Star 2.0 No partners, weird out-of-place giant real-world objects and what looks to be a resource fighting-system. Dont think I've ever gone from really excited to bummed out in 10 seconds.
Also, is it just me, but is "Color Splash" a really weak title? Thousand-Year Door sounds really cool and mysterious, and Sticker Star has the strong "St" sounds to it (besides being just a cool combination of words" and is a tautogram.
Dream Team was a great name because that was literally what they were, whereas Paper Jam was pretty lame - this is lamer.
Not happy about this. Sticker Star is probably my least favourite Nintendo game ever. They took a beloved series and removed everything worthwhile from it.
And now the trend continues on Wii U. God damn it.
Looks great, the trailer didn't give much away, I'm sure they'll reveal more soon.
And this right here is the tipping point: I'm not getting the next nintendo console. (Unless of course 6 years down the road they actually announce a TYD successor)
It looks good, the battle system is looking wack. I need more info on this one to purchase it.
It looks good, the battle system is looking wack. I need more info on this one to purchase it.
Yeah this is a bit disappointing because Sticker Star was actually extremely polished...it's just that the battle gameplay was so freakin' boring and unsatisfying. But gameplay is the most important part of any game!
@EXP there's a difference between legitimate criticism and entitled behavoir (see the reaction from the majority of people to Bayonetta 2's reveal for the latter), just as there's another side to be on rather than 'The Nintendo Defence Force' or the 'Let's Complain About Everything Brigade'. Can't we just be somewhere in-between? Oh wait this is the Internet I forgot so if you're not with us you're against us and let's start throwing names around is the way to go.
Gotta love the Internet.
I was excited at first but upon seeing the trailer it looks like all the RPG elements have been removed? But why? It's a fundamental part of the series and the reason why Super Paper Mario just felt flat (aha) and dull by comparison to the first two. It looks pretty cool I guess but it's not the Paper Mario we're all looking for, just as M&L: Paper Jam wasn't.
Looking forward to this, but I hope partners make an appearance, and I need to know more about the battle system.
I hope I am wrong about this, but I have less hype for this than for Sonic and Mario at Rio. At least that game should be a good coop game for parties. This game uses a mechanic that is kind of tired; "your environment has lost color so add color to it". How many games use that? Being level based is not necessarily such a bad thing. Paper Mario should be about experimentation and originality. It appears this title may be a little lacking.
I'm super excited for this game even though I thought Sticker Star was meh, simply because I love Paper Mario. Wish they'd go back to the series roots and bring partners back and the good ol' battle system.
@Yellowkoopa Expect the Koopalings and...
not much more.
Honestly, Nintendo couldn't be more explicit:
they showed us a lot of red Toads;
cards that you collect outside battles (you can also see a cards shop in the screenshot of this article) and then use in-battle after coloring them;
among those cards there are "things" cards;
there's a star which is a goal (you can see on the top of the town in the trailer) and a world map connecting the stages;
there's a new tattler who is a bucket;
there's only so much more we can expect, because in the case of Paper Jam, Nintendo used the same tactics of immediately saying what were its main aspects in terms of gameplay and story/characters.
If the battles with standard enemies gives you colors they might make sense...
Meh.... I Have Sticker Star on 3ds and got bored to death after the first world... Despite the artwork that is great this looks like a clone of that awful game....
Apart Xenoblade my wiiU is a dust collector since one year now...
As long as Mario and Luigi exists, Paper Mario will continue with this crappy direction, sad but I think that's how Nintendo's doing this. TTYD was the last during when the first M&L game came out before it and thus they had to go a different direction. SPM was a test to see where it could go but failed to sell and please the fanbase, thus the new direction to Sticker Star. Sadly I think it worked for them and now they continue with... this sigh
Awful. Chances of me buying an NX are much lower now.
Nintendo: All gimmick, no game.
Ugh, I don't want more stupid card battles. The old combat system was simple but engaging and great. TTYD is my favourite game of all time, this direction is so painful to watch
I am... so concerned about this. The battle system looks almost exactly like Sticker Star. Did they learn nothing?
@EXP Might have something to do with your age. Once you're a true adult, you will most definitely understand...
But seriously: people asked for or wanted a Paper Mario, but it wasn't expected to be in this Direct. Nintendo comes out with a couple of nice surprises, amongst which this game, and AGAIN it isn't good enough. "No, we didn't want THAT kind of Paper Mario, we wanted the good one that we all (read: I) liked." (because I am most important, and a multi-million dollar company like Nintendo must always listen to what I want)
That "always wanting more and never being satisfied" mentality is absolutely sickening and nauseating to me and it has nothing to do with me or somebody else being part of a "Nintendo defense force" but with trying to beat some sense into the endless droves of continuous whiners for whom it is never, ever enough because there will ALWAYS be something to complain about.
And even if there isn't, they'll dig and dig until they find it, to be able to gleefully bask in their righteous indignation of the in their eyes umpteenth failure of Nintendo to "comply" to their every whim... It's pathetic.
Think before you post, don't rant just for the sake of it or because you think you are right. It's just common sense to at least be grateful that they are listening to some extent. They are a company and simply can't make EVERYONE happy, so there's always going to be a percentage of Nintendo owners that don't like this title.
Luckily there are also plenty that will...
Frankly, first impressions are that this game isn't exciting. It doesn't seem to take many things from the older (read better) games in the series and tries to be a Sticker Star 2.0. Hope to god this game has the story and interesting set ups that the first games had, especially TTYD. Also the characters. I certainly hope for something more than just "PRINCESS PEACH GOT KIDNAPPED, AGAIN! WE MUST SAVE HER!" because that is beyond lazy and repetitive in this day and age.
Look, I am one of the few fans Sticker Star has...but I wanted a game more like TTYD...
The game looks gorgeous though!
I'm extremely distraught about thus
I'm extremely distraught about this
Never played paper Mario before...... Might be interesting to pick up.
@TheRealThanos Well wanting more and not getting what you ask for the 3rd time in a row are two different things. It's not like people are asking the world to Nintendo or that people aren't clear about what they want. They want a turn-based game, with partners, a good story and good characters. That's it. Now if they can't deliver this, again, for the 3rd time, yeah people are rightfully pissed. There's no entitlement there (btw wish people stop using the word entitlement as if it constitutes an argument because it doesn't). I ask for a Big Mac and you give me 2 Cheeseburgers, I've got nothing to be thankful for because you didn't give what I asked for.
This better not be a splatoon sequel like this says:
https://twitter.com/RealShigeruM/status/705535733101150213
@Whopper744 Agreed. That fan showing up at the end blowing the enemies away made me concerned that it's going to be another one of those "you need these amazing one-off skills to defeat bosses," which I really did not like.
I'm going to stay optimistic that they learned their lesson with Sticker Star, but my gut tells me otherwise. The game does look beautiful though. Lets hope PM returns to its former glory.
This is not "entitlement." Nintendo is a business; I am one of their customers. They make things that they think I want; I buy them or don't buy them. If they want to make money, they make things that people will want to buy. I do not want to buy Sticker Star again. I'm making my opinion known so that Nintendo can get an idea of who will buy the games they make.
I'm not saying I deserve a Paper Mario game in the vein of the first three, but I would really like one and it makes me sad to see that what used to be my favorite game series is now gone. What's worse, it's not even dead; it's mutated into something else. F-Zero fans can at least hope F-Zero comes back someday, but if you want a Mario vs. Donkey Kong game like the first game or like Donkey Kong '94, that's never going to happen because Nintendo decided that's not what that series is anymore. The same thing has happened to Paper Mario.
Wow guys Sticker Star (Stick Star I don't know) is that bad?
I never played but is really bad or it's just the fanbase overreacting a little bit?
Sigh. These comments. I'm out.
I will say this, though: this game is just gorgeous.
@Neko_Ichigofan Smash and Mario Kart are the best they've ever been.
Besides the removal of partners, bland story, and messed up game mechanics, were there any other reasons that Sticker Star is hated?
@EngieBengie Aw man, really? And we came to such a nice agreement in our last discussion. I will agree that entitlement is a lousy word, but I use it anyway for lack of a better one. Feel free to suggest one.
Nintendo is no philanthropic institution, so YES you should at least show some decency and be somewhat happy if they give you a Paper Mario game, even if it is not EXACTLY the one you wanted. (and the burger analogy is incorrect: this is still a Big Mac, except with the wrong dressings)
They have millions of customers worldwide, so like I said before: it is virtually impossible to keep them all happy, and it is HIGHLY unrealistic for each and every individual to EXPECT or DEMAND for Nintendo to cater to their every whim. If people cannot see how ridiculous that is, then you should seriously question your morals or sense of reality because it simply can't be done: 5 million players want version A of the game, another 5 million want version B and the other 3 million want game C.
Who to choose and who to make happy? Are you the most important customer or are they? (hint: it's not the individual) It almost feels like having to juggle three girlfriends at the same time: the heavens are bound to crash down any minute and you can't win because if you choose one, you'll end up doing wrong by the other two, and the same goes for Nintendo. So people are bound to be disappointed, but luckily not all of them, and this game is for those people.
Don't like it? Don't buy it, simple. Maybe the NX version of Paper Mario will come closer to the ultimate version that all of you demand. In the meantime, understand that the whole premise of glass half empty isn't the one to go with. Look at possibilities that are feasible for the company and think in solutions, NOT in problems. A disease that a LOT of people suffer from nowadays, unfortunately...
@Lizuka My brother has had a positive experience with it so far, so since its already in the household I might as well decide for myself.
Alright, after giving it another watch, I'm trying to look at the positives.
The game is pretty. And I can see myself liking splashing color everywhere to see what kind of things I get from it. The various color-related effects seems like it could be creative and fun to experience. If they can just include more hub-towns and interesting characters, it could be interesting.
Sticker Star was missing valuable character interactions I felt. If they can at least give us interesting towns and places to visit with assorted stories unfolding there, it could be nice. It might look like sticker star, but its possible to look like sticker star and deliver a better experience.
The battle system though, if there's more depth to it it could be fun, but the super flalshy random appliance attacks are jarring and I don't particularly enjoy them. Compare to the special attacks in other games where you're using star power, the appliance attacks are too out of place. And there were so darn many of them.
But I think its possible to be optimistic about this. Just really...really cautiously.
Nintendo. JUST STAY SIMPLE!
Add some new factors, and take the best parts of TTYD. You don't NEED some special factor! Sigh
Damn! I'm sad that I don't have the Wii U now......
@Adamario "Nintendo is a business; I am one of their customers."
You should have stopped at the first halve of that sentence, since that is the only correct part. Try to give my other comments another go to see where this is coming from if you are open to seeing the other side of the story.
I am a business man myself and like I said in those previous comments, it is simply impossible to keep everyone happy, and contrary to popular belief, the 30 to 40 people here on NLife moaning and crying about the injustice of this version of the game, are far, FAR from being a worldwide majority and THAT and ONLY that is what matters to a company. There is no I in customer.
I don't want to sound harsh, but companies can't afford to take heed of every individual opinion or wish: they go where the largest profits are to be made and if this is truly not what the majority wants, then the return on investment will speak for itself and it will do so much louder than any bitchin' and moaning individual can or ever will.
Casual person walks by. "Whoa, omg what happened here?"
"Nintendo announced a new Wii U game."
:: puzzled faces ::
"Yeah, tough crowd apparently."
I've only ever played the main console Paper games. What was so awful about Sticker Star? I never played it but there seems to be a ton of hate for it on here.
@TheRealThanos Basic economics isn't taught in schools anymore and it is really starting to show. Somebody had to say it, and frankly, I'm glad it was you. Good luck.
@Adamario You haven't played this game yet, but you have already decided off of a short trailer that a game that is many hours long is not a good game.... based off of a short clip....okay. You then assume that by trying something different with the handheld entry of the series means that Nintendo have completely abandoned the franchise as it was before.... okay. A LOT of assumptions and flawed logic going on there. Why is everyone so negative these days? I honestly don't think Nintendo is looking at the comments on Nintendo Life and drafting business plans based on that information. Don't worry, be happy.
@bobbypaycheque I'll agree with them that Sticker Star may come across as "dumbified" or simplified with mechanics that veer away from what purists consider to be the "true" Paper Mario, but every time people get so crazy and frustrated about a game I actually want to laugh at them, but unfortunately I only get sad because of all the bitterness and negativity, that is fueled by misunderstandings and a VERY healthy dose of unrealism...
@TheRealThanos Stop. This is the internet. Please check your logic at the door with the valet. It will be returned to you when you leave.
Personally I'm just miffed because my xbox one is still not going to get any playtime. Dangit Nintendo!
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah, I should know better, especially at my age, but it gets me every time, and I truly, truly HATE all this negativity and this constant looking from a perspective of what we DIDN'T get. It's extremely tiresome and often times very disheartening because at the end of the day it is just a hobby, and it should not even be significant enough to be so insulted about when game X or Y doesn't give you EXACTLY what YOU want...
Oh, well...
Oh man, you guys are right - this seems to be level based. Talk about a bucket of ice water being drop over my head.
It's too bad, because I adore the aesthetics. Here's hoping it's more of a true, free-roaming RPG somehow.
Very disappointing to see that it's so similar to Sticker Star. I'm trying not to be too sad, but... Come one, did they really hear enough praise for Sticker Start to think that another gimmicky, non-RPG Paper Mario is what fans wanted? Give me a break. I know there's the Mario and Luigi games that are still pretty faithful to their roots. Why can't Paper Mario be the same?
This is the single most disappointing thing Nintendo has unveiled in a long time. All the hype surrounding a new Paper Mario game to get....this. No, this is not "Paper Mario" as we know it on N64 and Gamecube. I wish we could call it something else and not taint the original franchise.
>Sigh<... HGH...
@bobbypaycheque Sticker Star was a pretty good game, the main problem people have with it is that it kind of got rid of everything people hold dear about the early games: the partners, the story, and the originality. It just stuck to the mushroom kingdom, and the only npcs were Toads, all mostly red. There weren't any chapters, and there wasn't really a reason to battle. After all the charm and heart and originality that was put into the original 3, Sticker Star seemed like a slap to the face and a heartless game, especially when it was revealed in an Iwata Asks that Intelligent Systems had created a bunch of original characters and a story, but Miyamoto told them not to use it and to only stick to existing Mushroom Kingdom characters. Why? He felt they weren't important and were a distraction, when that's what made the older games so enjoyable.
This trailer started to get me so excited... and then i saw the elements from Sticker Star coming and thought... "oh no, Miyamoto is ruining this one too."
@bobbypaycheque I suddenly remember that I also forgot to put a little explanation in my comments about the laws of diminishing returns when having to deal with a system that is slowly being phased out, hence every large investment still made in it is risky and potentially unnecessary, and as such certain choices that'll cost less, but will still make a relatively good profit are being made...
For a game based on colors, the colors look really washed out. I'm still hoping it won't be that bad. I was a little partial to sticker star when it came out.
Just hope Paper Mario isn't going the Chibi Robo route.
@Adamario I completely agree. If Nintendo wasn't going to create a new true Paper Mario game, I would have rather them let the series die after The Thousand Year Door.
I've never said this about any game, but... I really hope this doesn't sell well. The people that are interested in it are free to buy it, but I hope the fans of the original games speak with their wallets. This was easily the most disappointing announcement from Nintendo in quite some time. At least Metroid Prime: Federation Force is considered a spin-off and doesn't even include Samus (aside from cameos). This... is just insulting. I'm expecting the first trailer for this game to get bombarded with dislikes on YouTube.
Everyone who is extremely disheartened by this game...please don't buy it. Speak with your wallets.
I was kinda baffled at how this was announced: with all the fanfare of a squeeky fart...
There just seemed to be no excitement for it.
That being said, I'm always up for some Paper Mario action. But I do understand how fans of the first 2 games are a bit upset.
The video is a bit of an excitement dampener but I still think this looks pretty good and we really don't have enough information to write it off. Fingers crossed.
@Ichiban Hopefully this isnt the fanfare that accompanies Nintendo's future promotions. With the NX, they cant afford a lukewarm announcement like this.
...
Really?
Another game that looks like Sticker Star and has only Toads.
What the hell happened after TTYD? I really don't want to support these Mario RPG´s anymore. If I´ll buy this it´ll be a used copy.
Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite game of all time (like some other people have said here). As far as Sticker Star, I didn't loathe it like a lot of the community, but I felt like the sticker mechanic was really unnecessary and even detracted from the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I felt like many fans were really vocal about not liking the sticker system. Like, I thought it was abundantly clear that people generally did not want it at all. This trailer seems to indicate that they brought something similar back into the game... So for that reason I'm hesitant to be excited. I'll give it a chance though, this is just a trailer after all.
Will not buy. Immensely disappointed in Nintendo not listening to fans of the series since Paper Mario 64. Fans expressed they did not like the lack of partners or EXP in Sticker Star and they go and do the same thing in this new Paper Mario. I hope this falls flat on it's face and maybe Nintendo finally starts respecting their fans.
@WireWare Your icon is brilliant.
Upon further inspection and the general perception by those who played sticker star who are seeing this I do not have much hope for the story or the battle system in this game which are the things I buy a Mario RPG for.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Paper Mario as an RPG series. So, I could care less what the rabid RPG nutters and pissbabies think. I only care about wether this game looks fun to play. And you know what? It does. If you are really itching for a real successor to Mario Rpg, go play the Mario and Luigi series.
This is the first game after Xenoblade that i'm excited about, i'm not waiting for any HD makeover, any retro re_re_re_release on any device.
Thanks nintendo finaly a new game that i will be waiting for.
@empsolo
I really want to like these new Mario RPG´s but I can´t anymore. Mario & Luigi Paper Jam has the best battle system so far but the story and locations you visit are so boring. And since the game is an RPG with lots of text in it, it would need to be more interesting. Battle system is great but it can´t save the whole package. It needs more, like what TTYD did:
These games must become less predictable again. There needs to be a good balance with gameplay and story. Super Paper Mario has the best Mario story so far but gameplay wise most of it was quite boring for me.
@TheRealThanos You should have continued reading the rest of my comment. I never claimed to be every customer. I am making my own opinion known. If Nintendo keeps making Paper Mario games like Sticker Star, I will not buy them. I recognize that making games like Sticker Star is more financially viable for Nintendo, and I am lamenting the loss of a series I used to love.
@bobbypaycheque I played through Sticker Star, and it had none of the characteristics of Paper Mario that I loved. No story, no characters, no attempt to make it feel like an actual living breathing world, no interesting settings, no dialogue from Bowser or Peach. The lackluster gameplay was secondary; Paper Mario to me was always about the world it was in, where I could feel like characters were actually going about their lives in the Mushroom World and I actually had reason to care about them. This trailer shows no indication that any of that has changed. There's still no partner characters, no lines from Peach or Bowser, no signs of an actual plot, and no characters at all other than the nameless faceless personalityless legion of Paper Toads — not even Toadsworth! Until I see otherwise, I'm going to stop getting my hopes up for a dead series. Nintendo clearly has a completely different vision of what the series should be than I do.
And why is it so far-fetched that I've formed an opinion of this game based on a trailer that Nintendo's shown? Isn't that the point of them showing a trailer, to get me to form an opinion on it? They're showing this footage to me (us) to try to convince me (us) to buy it. That's what marketing is. After the way the Paper Mario series has been treated in Sticker Star and Paper Jam, I have no reason to believe that this game will have any of the elements of the series that I liked, and this trailer showed nothing that would change my mind on that. I will continue to follow the game's development and read all the reviews when it comes out, but right now, I have no reason to believe I will like it.
Looks cool, I'll save judgement for when I see more of this.
But why the endless hoard of generic toads everywhere? A special attribute of the Paper Mario games were the original characters. Visual style looks nice, but it seems so restricting that the only characters here are the bland, traditional Mario bunch. I bet Bowser will be the villain again too.
@SebCroc
You know those Nintendo arguments that only gameplay matters but story doesn't at all? Well here's a thing: an RPG needs more than just a great battle system (M & L Paper Jam). The best thing about these games was that we got original characters and locations, not just an endless horde of Toads. And I´m 100 % sure that Bowser will be the main villain again. Where has the originality gone?
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS CMON
@J_watch Yep.. That's what I thought too. I'm getting the game because I love paper mario but it looks A LOT like sticker star which isn't a good thing
@Adamario I feel your pain!
Where are the RPG elements?
This could be a fantastic game. I did like Sticker Star, but I'm almost certain this game will be a lot better than Sticker Star; battles look a bit deeper now, thanks to the paint mechanic. Visuals are gorgeus as well.
Sticker Star style combat is the worst thing they could have done with this game.
They messed up.
@Luffymcduck The game hasn't been shown for more than twenty seconds and here you are prognosticating about the story line and the world.
@empsolo
Yes, based on my experience with previous Mario RPG´s. They've become so predictable I´m sick of it.
Good thing I greatly enjoyed sticker star! Will be picking this up.
@TheRealThanos Yes, I very much agree. I usually just become an internet hermit for a little while until the tantrums aren't front and center. But honestly it is disheartening in general, I could never be in any type of creative profession because "fans" are more like wolves than admirers and public opinion is fickle as can be. I don't mind negativity/distention, but people use the worst hyperbolic language to express it and then they get confused when it is viewed as an extreme reaction to something that supposedly gives them joy and is just a hobby at the end of the day.
Love Paper Mario. Hope this has the depth of TTYD...
Really wanted a Paper Mario, I've liked all of them so I will definitely get this, Sticker Star is my least favourite though. Am worried they have doubled down on the Sticker Star ideas rather than see them as a step in a direction that made the series worse and backed off from them. Who knows though it may still be the best yet, look at the initial impression of SM3DW to the final game.
@TheRealThanos haha, i'm imagining your avatar fighting off all these angry fanboys, like a legendary warrior taking on dozen of soldiers by himself
But I agree, this early negativity based on nothing is so annoying.
@Spanjard
Nah, Thanos can just erase them from existence in order to impress Death.
@TheRealThanos I think you are just plain wrong about the "entitlement".
As an example, figures from the Metacritic:
o Paper Mario; press score 93 / user score 9.2 (15 / 207 reviews)
o PM: The Thousand-Year Door; 87 / 9.4 (55 / 236)
o Super PM; 85 / 7.9 (56 / 368)
o PM: Sticker Star; 75 / 6.1 (69 / 303)
People didn't like Sticker Star and don't want more of the same; people loved TTYD and do want more; Color Splash has "sticker star" all over it from the looks of it; people get disappointed. Perfectly reasonable.
Now I haven't read every comment so I cannot comment on how people have reacted exactly. But on principle people have the right to complain when they are being served the same poop even after giving feedback.
But hey, at least the grafixx are sick man! (They really are great)
@Moshugan
I find it interesting that original Paper Mario is rated higher by press than TTYD. At least the user score reflects my thoughts of it being easily the best Paper Mario game (OK, the user score is only 0,2 higher but still ).
I'm currently playing Sticker Star for the first time. Just finished Enigmansion.
I have enjoyed it for the most parts. There are so many nice things all over that I have been having enough fun to carry on and it's an audio-visual treat, especially in 3D!
But mechanically it's stupid as heck.
The regular battles are tiring and the bosses are stupid with their requirement of using a specific "magic bullet" sticker to beat them.
The sticker-money economy is a bit weird. To battle, you use stickers. If you battle, you'll get money, and you might get stickers too. You need money to buy more stickers. If you don't battle, you don't get money from battles nor from the end of a stage. The only reason to battle is to get money.
The only way to "level up" is to find health expansions and better stickers. There's no experience points or equipment upgrades.
Paperization is usually fun, but there has been some going back and forth to get the needed sticker. Usually the required stickers can be deduced, but I imagine it can get a bit annoying if you have to try multiple stickers with no avail.
The biggest problem thus far are the characters. The most memorable thus far was a big Wiggler. A friggin' Wiggler. Although he was adorable! They have managed to inject some personality to the Toads at places, but most of them are just clones of each other. That's pretty much it. None of the characters are even given names. They are just Toads and Wigglers and Snifits and... Well, Kamek migh have a name.
Oh, and I forgot Kersti! Of course her character is a bit more fleshed out, and I actually think she's a great. But then again, she's filling the void of actual companions.
I've still enjoyed exploring and seeing the sights. There's some humorous parts that keep me going, and I've enjoyed filling up the museum.
All of this said: I really hope Color Splash ain't Sticker Star.
@Luffymcduck I think that the original might actually be more balanced than TTYD, but I feel that the latter is more charming.
Why would they create such a gorgeous looking game, and then ruin it with gimmick based gameplay? Does Nintendo even know what their fans want anymore?
Why should I have to tap a card to colour it, what is the actual point of doing that? And flick it to start a battle? Seems like the kind of pointless mediocrity that mobile games relish in.
I think it's time we had a new Mario RPG series. I don't like how M and L is getting so focused on having a 2D portion and Paper Mario has forgotten how to RPG.
@MagicalDreamer
Time for New Super Mario RPG series then.
@Luffymcduck Noooooooooooo!
Recently I increasingly rarely visit this site because news about my Wii U were always more depressing. Than I come because of the Direct and this is what I see... Oh dear!
Reading through the comments I can't believe nobody has mentioned that the spelling of Colour in the video is incorrect. That's the American version of spelling it, Color. I know it's pedantic but little things like that bug me. I hope it's title is changed for Europe to the right way of spelling it. I don't like that the Americans have bastardised(or should that be bastardized? No!)the spelling of many words. ~end of rant~
C'mon, nobody thinks Nintendo learned ANYTHING? After all, SF0 is apparently improved from E3 and I doubt they'll make this a carbon copy of Sticker Star. While it did seem to have a similar vibe, I doubt it won't have improvements.
Am I the only person who thinks Sticker Star is good?!
@alasdair91 Yes.
I hope this turns out good because it looks lovely.
On a slightly different note; am I the only one who is irked by Nintendo suggesting we use our fingers/hands on the touch screen. That's what the stylus is there for!
@FTPinkRabbit Thank you! The cup is filled to the brim with fan tears.
I think this looks fantastic visually. The game play could be fun. I see where people are hesitant with comparisons to Sticker Star. I thought that SS was fairly good but did not enjoy it nearly as much as Super Paper Mario and most people like the first two games WAY more than that one. I'm definitely interested in this though and am anticipating future info!
Everybody relax. Let's be happy that the WiiU is even getting this game. Try to use your imaginations and see that this could be a fun, lighthearted game in a series that we love. One trailer isn't enough data to judge this badly.
Just a reminder; we know next to nothing about this game. Let's save the hate until we know how it actually works
@Adamario I did read all of it. I am one of those rare types that actually reads all the comments instead of just rushing to the end of the page after having read the article to post something that has already been said...
I wrote all that business stuff down not just for you, but for people in general to maybe give them some insight into reasons of a company and to let them realize what happens behind the scenes. It might go some way to adjust expectations of what the number and type of titles they are going to see being published in what is probably the final major year of the Wii U.
Look, I can understand the disappointment but what I do NOT understand is the reactions, that for a large part seem totally out of proportion. I already mentioned in the previous comment that a hobby should not be so important to people that they feel they need to climb the barricades and scream and rant as if their lives depended on it. Not saying you did that, but there's a lot of people that are highly annoyed by this teaser trailer, and personally I just think they need to take a breath and relax.
This teaser trailer is meant to whet the appetite or let people know that the game is coming. It is so short that it tells you virtually nothing about how the whole game is going to be, even if it has Sticker Star mechanics in it. You can't judge a book by it's cover, so that's all I'm saying.
And in part it is also because I might be a bit more traditional and because of my age: I'm 45 and besides not being so quick to be insulted or worried anymore (except about negativity) I'm also of the idea that you really need to know something before you can judge it, and here I see a lot of people shouting based on virtually no information.
The game is not out yet, and even though it may not be the traditional RPG-like mechanic, maybe they have changed parts of the game to make it a better version of Sticker Star, and even though that is not what you wanted exactly, it may still be a good game, so maybe we should just keep an eye on it and see how it turns out when it is well and truly finished and it can actually be reviewed...
@Ryu_Niiyama Thanks. I sometimes truly wonder if it must be an age thing that makes me more relaxed towards "disappointments" like this. Back when I was 16, I also shouted a whole lot more, but lucky enough for a bunch of people there wasn't any internet back then for me to pollute with my rantings and ravings.
To me, younger people seem so mad these days, and the internet is a true instant solution to vent that anger where you might otherwise let it subside and realize that it is kind of silly to get so worked up over something. Also, the internet doesn't allow you to quickly slap some sense into someone, which is also a true shame in some cases...
Anyway, I don't see all these things changing any time soon, so I guess we will have to learn to accept it or leave the internet altogether, and that is something that I'm not going to do because I don't like losing so every once in a while, there's probably going to be a couple of more of these kind of comments of mine as well.
If only to see if I can at least let some people have a slightly broader view instead of just their own...
@Moshugan Well, thanks at least for a level-headed reaction, and at least you still played the game even after seeing all the negativity about it, and you have even said at least something positive about this new game, so that's a good thing.
I already said in a previous comment that entitlement is a lousy word, but the rest of my comments explained exactly what I meant to say with it. And if you want to know if people were really that negative, just check my comments again to see to who I reacted or just browse through the comments that were posted before my first comment and I'd bet you will see why I started this discussion.
@Spanjard Hey, I'm the bad guy, remember? (or at least my avatar is)
But anyways, thanks for the positive reaction.
@Luffymcduck Nah man, she dumped me in the comics, so I really can't be bothered anymore. Now I'm more of a slap some sense into people kind of guy. Albeit with a very large, gem-studded glove...
@Luffymcduck 9.4 to 9.2 is still a massive difference! I agree with you on TTYD being the best game though. Anything from 9.0 and up is really hard to achieve with Metacritic user averages... I believe
I guess it's safe to say that the PM series has moved away completely from the RPG format. It's a shame, but there's not much we can hope for. The full trailer has given plenty of info for me to decide to skip this one.
Also, @TheRealThanos, it's clear from your first comment that you don't understand the reaction at all. People did not ask for a continuation of the lowest rated PM game with mechanics that don't make sense for a home console game (for example, the level selection map). You are the "bad guy" in the sense that you aren't arguing from the side of logic.
@Madmanonfire I don't think you are fully understanding what I was trying to accomplish/get across. Everything I said about how businesses work and what might motivate Nintendo to make this step is correct and factual so I am definitely arguing from the side of logic. And from having realism in expectations as well...
And from the side that says that we can't possibly judge this new game yet based on what we have seen now, and the side that says that people shouldn't logically get so worked up over nothing, in the sense that it's just a hobby and it really isn't important enough to start a new French Revolution for.
Before you know it, some crazy people will start another "kill this game before it is published" petition...
It's not like you HAVE to buy it if it ends up being as bad as all of you already seem to think it is going to be, so in the end it is going to cost you absolutely nothing except for the fact that you will have to wait for the next Paper Mario game (probably on NX) that IS going to deliver the goods for you.
@TheRealThanos Sorry for not reading all of the comments. I'll try to check at least some of them out later. You seem to have a lot of good thoughts even if I don't agree with everything!
@Moshugan Not to worry, and no need to apologize. And of course we don't have to agree on everything. Besides the fact that it would make the world extremely boring if we would all agree all the time, that is just about as unrealistic as thinking Nintendo can make everyone happy at the same time...
See, I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.
What is it that Nintendo doesn't understand about this series now? The reason a lot of people feel passionate about this, is because they know Intelligent Systems (and Nintendo as producers) has the potential to make a truly great Paper Mario game. And these days, it's hard not to think that Nintendo is delusional in some respects.
One explanation I ponder about is Miyamoto disliking the idea of narrative in any form of Mario game. It's the reason Sticker Star's narrative was immensely cut down (among other RPG factors, and using new characters). It's also the reason that story-based elements like Rosalina's backstory were removed for Mario Galaxy 2 (along with her presence). The visual style looks nice, but gameplay-wise it appears as though there isn't anything that warrants it being a spin-off worth doing this time around.
Ah well, I'll just enjoy the glory days of the Glitz Pit.
@TheRealThanos To be fair the first two titles sold alot better than Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star did given the limited N64 and GCN userbase so Nintendo should listen to the fans on this one. Based on the size of the Wii U's userbase I predict that Nintendo will fail to sell much more than 100k units of the game.
I know I'm getting angrier about this than someone my age probably should, but I've never been more disappointed by a game in my life than when I expected something like TTYD and got Sticker Star. This is dredging up all those memories again and I need to get them out - and if I can be part of helping to show Nintendo that there is still a market for actual Paper Marios with real effort, that even a decade out there's still hope, all the better.
Again, I'm not irrevocably condemning the game - if it comes out and it turns out it actually does have some of the PM characteristics I want, I'm not going to pout and say "Well the trailer was bad, so I'm not getting it." I'm saying that at this point, with the material they've given us to try and sell us on it, they have not given me any reason to believe that they've fixed any of the reasons I hated Sticker Star. Nothing in the trailer does anything to indicate that they've suddenly reversed the trend of Paper Mario being a game where Paper Mario finds folded up Paper Toads and nothing interesting happens. The Iwata Asks said that Sticker Star was going to be the new standard for PM, and now they've put out a trailer for a game that looks exactly like Sticker Star 2. To assume that things have changed would be to not take Nintendo at their word, and to set myself up for disappointment again with false hope. I believe Nintendo when they say that this is all we're getting now. I want them to change, but it would be stupid for me to assume they have.
@WireWare That's awesome. Your own drawing, or did it come from somewhere else?
@TheRealThanos "There is no I in customer."
There is if you say it in a South African accent...
But yeah I get exactly what you mean about the overreactions in here. These games are my lil bit of escapism from the real world. There are much bigger things in the world to worry about.
@TheRealThanos Keeping everyone happy is impossible, keeping the majority happy is still possible. The majority of Paper Mario fans wanted something like TTYD. Is there really something to lose by going back to what made a series great?
Keep in mind I'm not angry or expect the game to be a flop just yet since we only have 1 trailer. But the trailer itself doesn't impress me much and worries me that they have not learned their lesson with Sticker Stars. The story, the set ups, the characters could be good.
@FTPinkRabbit Not mine. A friend showed it to me. I think a Japanese fan made it, but don't quote me on that.
@Neko_Ichigofan I know that, but even though the scores of the previous Sticker Star also reflect the lesser interest in this type of game, you must also take into account that the market has changed so it is by definition already harder to sell games in a niche market, which Paper Mario arguably is in, and I already explained possible business motivations for Nintendo to go with this title. But maybe we should just wait and see instead of condemning this title based upon effectively 35 seconds of in-game footage...
@WiltonRoots Custimer?
@EngieBengie If you take out the intro and the outro of that trailer, or more correctly: teaser, then you will only have around 30 - 35 seconds left, which isn't nearly enough to make any kind of logical, well-rounded judgment about how this game is going to turn out so there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever in any reasonable person's mind that people are overreacting way, WAY too much.
We don't know what their motivation is, that all happens behind the scenes. Maybe they were sorry about the previous Sticker Star game but still wanted to try and "fix" the things that were wrong with the first version because they aren't quite ready to let go of this type of game, by swapping the sticker pasting with painting, and maybe even in some quirky way because of the popularity of Splatoon, who knows?
And see what happens if I too let loose and go and try to figure out why they did this? The mind goes wild and all kinds of crazy ideas pop up, and if we mix those up with the ideas of all the other people, we will get a humongous list of what the f*** Nintendo was thinking and why they have possibly done this or what their motivation is.
All WAY too soon. Maybe we should just wait until a more extended trailer comes along, that actually shows some more interaction and gameplay instead of this "sneeze and you miss it" teaser trailer...
@TheRealThanos There are still ideas from Sticker Stars and that is enough to be worried about because Sticker stars is by far the worst in the series. Sure it's a first teaser but that doesn't mean you can't have first impressions. I myself said that I can't consider the game a flop due to it being recently announced. However, are bad impressions that much different than good impressions? Someone sees this trailer for the first time and it's the best thing ever for them is simply the polar opposite of somehow watching this teaser and thinking it sucked or is disappointing, but one of them is looked down upon for expressing their opinion and first impressions.
Hopefully interviews come and answer our questions. And, above all, they learned their lesson with Sticker Stars and took the criticism very seriously.
Haven't played any of them so I have no idea what this divide between the good ones and bad ones is supposed to be. This looks mediocre so far. If it reviews like 85% of higher, I'll get it.
@EngieBengie Sure, it can go either way, but for me personally even looking on the positive side can only tell you so much since it's such a short clip. At the most you could be positive about the fact that a new Paper Mario is now confirmed and if you like how it looks you can be positive about that too. And then there is maybe a third option where people that are positive might like the paint mechanic because it does indeed remind them of Splatoon.
But other than that, there aren't that many things that you can say about it even if you look at it positively, so no matter which way your opinion goes, good or bad, it truly is too soon to tell what this is going to be like.
You cannot simply say: oh, this smells like Sticker Star 2 so it is going to suck. We've seen a bit of the environment and a few characters, that doesn't mean that there isn't going to be more of it and more diversity.
Since Thursday, I've been browsing through dozens of sites and the funny thing is while most people reacting to the articles on them are doing the exact same thing that we all are doing: having a discussion over a game we practically know nothing about and going completely crazy over it, most of the professional reviewers that write the articles have come to the only correct conclusion and that is that it is simply too soon to tell how this game is going to turn out.
Let's just wait and see until we get some more info and longer videos so that we will know more and will truly be able to form a subjective opinion.
As someone who has never really been into the Paper Mario series...
What is the deal with Sticker Star hate?
People treat it like it's the worst thing ever and a pestilence to all mankind. What made Sticker Star so terrible and hated for all these years?
@Action51 Sticker Star removed pretty much everything that made Paper Mario great.
Great Story
Companions
Level System
A battle system that made fights worthwhile (in SS it was better to avoid all fights).
Creative characters that were replaced by the same looking Toads.
@WireWare Welp, either way it's excellent. Especially for comments. Mine is more of a general use kinda thing, but I might swap eventually to a gif or something.
Not what I wanted from a paper Mario but, I'm still going to give it try when it's out.
Ah cool, the Wii u paper mario rumor was true! Looks like paper mario goes De Blob/Epic Mickey. Nice graphics. People already complain that it may be like Sticker star. That's to early to tell, but to be honest I don't expect a massive paper mario with buddies (like thousand year door). Nintendo just won't do that anymore. I do hope we see new enemies and characters though (and not to many toads, that gets old). I seem to be one of the few who loved Sticker star though! Looking forward to it.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star mashed up with Super Mario Sunshine?
...Nintendo- truly is running out of ideas, merely serving itself.
uses the Ballet Shoes against Paper Mario: Colour Splash
I've been away for two and a half weeks enjoying beautiful NZ without my phone and to just find out about this game is so awesome! It looks equally stunning!! Haha
@Sinister - thanks for the reply.
I kept hearing so much hate for Sticker Star, but not being a fan of Paper Mario I didn't know why.
I figured it might be like Skyward Sword, which seems to get a ton of hate that isn't really deserved, or it could be like Metroid Other M which gets a ton of hate which is partially deserved.
