Nintendo has shown the first footage of The Legend of Zelda title for the Wii U during its E3 Digital Event.
The game boasts a massive open world, a cel-shaded art style and what appears to be some particularly dynamic combat — but no title as yet.
The only other confirmed info is that the game is due for release next year.
More details to follow.

I just peed myself
OMGOODNESS YESSS <3 hopefully this is after Skyward Sword and before Ocarina of Time!
Wow that open world looked BEAUTIFUL. Theres no othet words..awesomeness!!!!!!!..so hyped and pumped for this!!!
My jaw fell off.
Best e3 I've witnessed.
splatoon
Kirby canvas curse sequel
New Zelda
starfox
bayonetta 2 and 1 collection
hyrule warriors looks fantastic
yarn yoshi seems very innovative
do I need to continue
All we need is a new Metroid game and then life would be perfect.
really like the look of the new zelda game for wii u. real-world type graphics, but with so much color and personality. looks like a world i want to explore and interact with. cant wait.
I swear my heart exploded. Nintendo just exceeded my wildest dreams and I've no idea how I'll wait for this one.
The open world is EXACTLY what I've wanted from Zelda for a long time now. The original Zelda was so open and invited inspiration. 3D Zeldas (Wind Waker excepted) have a very constricted overworld, where every area feels like you're forced into some sort of canyon.
Open World? Yes please!
Storybook-like Cell Shading? Yes please!
This looks awesome, open world , huge, non linear, awesome and awesome. A MM3d reveal during E3 would be the perfect finish for me!
That was just fantastic, enjoyed every minute of that.A bit of an anti climax ending with the Smash Bros reveal but overall 10/10 Nintendo!
This looked so beautiful omg.
I about lost it. OPEN WORLD ZELDA! ZELDA'S CREED! ASSASSIN'S ZELDA!!! THE ZELDA SCROLLS: ZELDA SKYRIM!!!!!!!!!!
The scope and beauty shown in that Zelda world reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus. Can't wait to see more!
It's so prettyyyyy..... Kind of an evolution of Skyward Sword's style. Wish we had story details.
First word that came to my mind: Gorgeous.
Pretty disappointed with the length of the trailer for this title.
Looks very good, but I wish we got a lenghtier trailer. That being said this feels extremely promising.
Looks amazing, but I would have preferred an longer trailer. Link looks amazing though.
I nearly cried, tears of joy obviously. Nintendo 'won' E3, no question there. Can't wait to see what else they have up their sleeve!
I'm super excited for this! Skyrim Zelda here I come!
Looks awesome! I'm glad they didn't go the TP route for the art style, although I wish we could have seen a longer trailer.
I have total faith in Anouma-san's new direction.
It's time like this that I'm glad to be a Wii U owner.
It's GORGEOUS. I am SO EXCITED about the open world!! Link looked pretty bad tho, but maybe it was just the light...
Are we sure that's Link riding Epona? He looks more feminine than i've ever seen.
I though it was a semi realistic art style with A LOT of color...then Link's face was shown :l
I mean, I'm NOT disappointed that they're using cel-shaded (thank you, Shigeru -__-), but I'm sure a lot of people are. I don't want to deal with their b/s until the game is released...
Exactly what the doctor ordered. Can't wait for this, but they either held back a ton of what they already have, or they're going to need to bust their chops to get this out by the end of 2015.
Best 30 second trailer ever. Thats no sarcastic remark either,i mean it! Seeing the new link, new combat, INCREDIBLE ART DIRECTION. So so hyped for this. If nothing comes out for wii u but this game id still be happy I bought a wii u. Honorable mention must go to Splatoon too. One game for xbone that looks amazing is sunset overdrive. And Splatoon looks similar but with that ninty magic thrown in. Awesome e3 from all 3 companies so far
Day 1 purchase for me, that's for sure!
Definitely has a Xenoblade vibe when it comes to a massive overworld, also I'm loving the art style. Can't wait!
NEED THIS!!!
Woha!
F*%@ YEAH! I hope they cram as much side quests into that beautiful overworld as they possibly can!
I also like how Link looks a bit more "wild" with his hair being longer and more uneven. Maybe this is a sequel to Skyward Sword?
Love the game and the character models are fine!
though I think the Link from the tech demo would have been a perfect fit as well.
I think it looks great! I can't wait until 2015!!
This game looks amazing!
If this is even half as great as ALBW it should be great.
I got all warm. Can't wait for this release!
Yes it looks gorgeous, however let's see how many people will hate on the graphic style choice. I for one loved it and it just looks so great! Nintendo remembers we are trying to play videogames and not interactive movies. I love that about them. Don't need photo realistic graphics to have a great time!!
OMG! That looked absolutely amazing. I'm so glad I own a Wii U.
Just when people called MK8 the most beautiful game on WiiU this game shows up. It's so gorgeous
My first thought was that it looks like Zelda Skyrim. What's your guess for release? Is this next spring or are we looking at Holiday season for 2015?
As somebody who really wanted a more photo realistic look and was planning on skipping another cel-shaded Zelda, this game looks great, can't see how graphics shold be a problem for anybody, even cel-shaded cartoon graphics, looking that lush and alive. Wii couldn't pull off lush and alive, neither could Gamecube, Wii U can apparently.
Wii U eShop has about 30 E3 game videos but not this one
Looks stunning! Now I just hope they confirm wii motion plus as an option for sword-fighting and it'll be on its way to being the best Zelda ever!
Why is no-one talking about that weird technologically advanced arrow? Open world is awesome, but I thought the arrow and the laser-blasting boss were a lot more intriguing…
I just noticed that Link is right-handed in that trailer...I miss lefty Link
@dkxcalibur - 2016. Thats not a joke or sarcasm, just realism. They had a 10 second clip, I can't imagine an entire game of this magnitude in only 18 months from Nintendo. Not Zelda, which they will want to be perfect. Seemingly EVERY game gets delayed these days anyway. Just ask Sony and Ubi.
@yokokazuo
Oooooh, good point. The only reason I can see for a right handed Link.... is motion controlled swordplay!
I'm excited to play it! It seems totally different & quite unlike any past Zelda game. Completely open-world while being lush, vibrant & alive? Yes please! The sci-fi weapons seem amazing too! Could this game preceed even Zelda: Skyward Sword? We shall see, next year! Can't wait!
@Suicune - Link looked like a girl to me too when he first took off the hood and they showed him from behind, but that last second freeze was Link. It is a japanese game after all, androgyny is very big over there, and in Square Enix games.
@sevex - "Shadow of the Colossus. "
That's what I thought when Link reared back on his horse that first time. A lot more green in this game though (just finished HD a few months ago on PS3)
And there was only Metroid, F-Zero or a new IP as the secret 3DS game. Well, it could be a Mother title. The guy in the Robot Chincken animation asks for a Starfox, and there is a new Starfox. He asks for a Mother, and...
@rjejr #60
I'm guessing Christmas 2015. They need a big name for the Holiday season, 2013 was Mario, this year is Smash, so, next year... they'll have to pour in all the resources and personnel they can though.
Seriously, how talented/hardworking are the zelda team. This looks absolutely stunning! I'm telling you Wii U is next gen
I'm not going to front. I was hoping for a more "realistic" looking Zelda game, but I have to say that this one right here is most certainly....beautiful! Well done, Nintendo. Faith has been restored!
I'm glad they chose cel shaded it looks the series more and makes the game look beautiful even more than anything else you ever seen before
That trailer was stunning. I hope its not a holiday 2015 release! I want it now!
Love the way Aonuma described the world. I wouldn't expect it to be like Skyrim. Tons of empty pointless areas and people does not sound like fun Zelda to me. Fortunately, that's not what it sounds/looks like.
Thanks for the screens, @Frapp.
So... can Link REALLY jump off Epona and shoot an arrow? Is that a suggestion at some new abilities for Link or just cinematic license? It's not like Nintendo to show that.
Love the look of this. Glad it's 2015 and not later. Wait is long.
My jaw dropped…then a few seconds later the word "whoa" came out of my mouth…
It says 2015 but i have a feeling it will be 2016 or 2017…lets be realistic what they're trying to accomplish is huge so if they need tht time im alright with that besides good things are worth waiting for
This was probably the highlight of E3. Looks and sounds amazing! Now I need to see more!
Looks really really great
Can't wait to see more.
I don't know about you guys, but I am drawing parallels between this Link and the Link from the opening to The Minish Cap.
I came so hard that iv'e been mopping the floor for like an hour!
Between this and star fox, even if they don't show anything else, they won E3. Now, if they're gonna show metroid u, they also won next year one, by default.
Somewhere between windwaker and skyward sword was a good choice, gives the world a lot of character and allows for some rather stunning effects and art direction. It's so beautiful!
This looks really good the world looks amazing but that link I'm not a big fan tbh was hoping he would be older bit more like Skyward or twilight link or older getting bit tired of the teen/pre teen link ah well, it'll play great though
@Imagamerboi and F-Zero
I haven't played a console Zelda in some time, but so far I'm a little enticed to give this a go. There's not much to go on, but it looks like it has promise.
@aaronsullivan That's kind of what an open world is though. If all the characters are important and all the areas are important the game is no longer open. The beauty of an open world (which some don't like) is that it feels less like a game in that not everything is programmed to do your bidding.
Basically, one of the most potentially stunning looking games this gen...and given the Zelda pedigree, also potentially one of the best games this gen all-round.
>Hype Levels: Critical<
Seriously, this may just make me care about Zelda again.
I really hope that they deliver on what they just promised.
OMG that looked stunning
I really like the new art style! It looked like a painting when it was still.
Showed this to my brother and he said out loud "oh my god that's in game" then one of my kids piped up "and link got old" lol
:') Tears of joy! Definitely getting a Wii U now Zelda and SSB here I come!!!
Perfection, simply
@yokokazuo I miss lefty too. Its one reason I always loved link. Im a lefty too.
...reaches out for tissues...
My panties are wet...
It's like the tech demo, except all beatifulised.
Another reason to get a wii u! I really like the art style they went with on this.
That image of link reminds me of the concept art of Skyward Sword, crossed with the hd tech demo. So far, so gorgeous!
That little bit of piano music for the action, along with the slow-mo footage, is a bit too similar to the church fight in Advent Children. http://youtu.be/FTwgHPE1rsc?t=1m10s
Insanely beautiful.
Looks amazing and now we know nintendo won E3. sad other people besides fans of nintendo is not going to say it.
I also feel like the wonder of huge open worlds is kind of an old thing now. I'm not saying I don't want that in a Zelda game, but I hope that's not their trump card. This mini-trailer also reminds me a lot of that opening action scene in Princess Mononoke. I know a lot of other movies, cartoons, etc have copied that scene, but I kind of expect more from Nintendo. I want to expect more, but more and more of their stuff is feeling like a rehash or a copy these days. I'm sure there's still room for this Zelda game to impress, but to be honest, I got bored about half way through Skyward Sword and never completed it... which for me was a big deal, because I've loved the Zelda series since the beginning.
Does no one seem to comprehend that this Link is feminine? Maybe a sister or a very Link-ish Zelda? "She" has a pony tail, side braid things, and a very athletic, lithe figure. As far as game stereotypes go, that seems moderately indicative.
I would have loved a realistic style. I would have been alright with a Hyrule Warriors style. Please don't hate on me, but I'm disappointed with this game. It's just cartoony, like EVERY OTHER ZELDA GAME.
Don't get me wrong here. I love the open-worldness. I love the steampunk. This is just a very big missed opportunity IMO. The E3 2011 demo looked perfect. But this... this is just The Wind Waker HD's graphics. At the very least, I'd prefer the art style of the original Wind Waker (since people can't seem to tell the difference, on Gamecube, it was cel-shaded. On Wii U, it has a color gradient, and therefore, is NOT cel-shaded), but I think they couldn't possibly have disappointed me more with the graphics.
@GhotiH I agree 100%. I was really hoping for the graphics to look like the 2011 E3 Demo. The graphics shown here are really disappointing.
@Frapp Are those from some press kit?
I think the art direction is great and also practical. Lets face it, Wii U's hardware doesn't exactly accomodate realism (especially with the standards expected by people today). That 2011 trailer was great, but this art style opens up a lot of possibilities and what's more it will still look gorgeous in 10 years time and the visuals in that 2011 trailer will be unimpressive by then. Really looking forward to this game.
@Yorumi Agree with you regarding your comments on skyrim to an extent. I by far prefer Oblivion to Skyrim - even if it was a step backwards from Morrowind and has less features than Skyrim. The world was far more interesting and colourful. That's one thing I am looking forward to in this new Zelda game...colour in an open world game. Who would have thought it possible? lol
Oh my god this is so perfect. This is seriously all I've ever wanted from Zelda. God this is gorgeous. That grass is beautiful! I am literally so happy I've always wanted a truly open world Zelda, this is so great. God I need a Wii U.
Nintendo asked us to "Please understand." Now they have proven that THEY understand.
@Imagamerboi You read my mind.
this is the zelda ive been waiting for
I have to say, Skyrim-esque Zelda looks and sounds pretty appealing. This is definitely my favorite news of the day.
Well that was the coolest thing I've seen in a while.
I have to say. I really wish Nintendo would stop using cel shading for zelda games. I want a more realistic looking zelda like twilight princess was. I'm still gong to play this game. I'm sure it will look great and I will have fun playing the game. I've just never been a fan of the cel shading/cartoon look.
Holy!... I wasn't even looking for this game (my Zelda backlog is huuuuge) but after seeing this, you better bet I'm gonna get this!
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think this may have been the best E3 in over a decade for Big N. This might be able to revive the Wii U!
First I was like OMG OMG OMG and the I was like... its...beautiful...Oh, the wait!
For those of you saying links not using a sword or looks different/girly. On venturebeat they said that Aounuma said "no one explicitly stated that was link" .....food for thought....u know those head guys at e3 are careful about everyone word they say
@Frapp Thanks for that! What was shown was disappointingly brief, but those screens help me to get a better look without watching it over and over. I'm quite excited for this, though, especially about what Aonuma said regarding its take on exploration. So jazzed.
@edcomics so which is it? like Advent Children fight or Mononoke intro? because they are very different. Maybe it's just influenced by cool action sequences that came before and is its own thing?
Hayao Miyazaki films have seemed to be an influence on Zelda for a long time. Link was originally inspired by Peter Pan.
Yeah for inspiration. Nothing I see here is mindlessly copied, however.
WOW that was amazing. Can't wait.
@aaronsullivan I'd say it's both... which is why I pointed out both items. Based on your comments, it doesn't sound like you disagree with me... except on the boundary between inspiration and copying. Homage is fine, but I feel (in my opinion) that these elements are too close for comfort, and demonstrates a lack of creativity on Nintendo's part.
The reveal that Link was inspired by Peter Pan is actually a disappointment, and it also displays a lack of creativity at the time. I think it's ok to take a little of this and and little of that as inspiration (that's to be expected), but with a now high-profile franchise like The Legend of Zelda, I expect a little more care to be taken to keep things original. I don't mind if something familiar is mixed in, but this just feels too close for me. The elements are too recognizable.
Of course this is only a criticism of the video they've shown, and likely won't apply too much to the game itself on the whole... but I think it's worth pointing out... which is why I did.
why they couldnt make the ZELDA like a demo on E3 2011

@sugarshack
Agreed, but please continue because I believe you missed a big one:
Xenoblade Chronicles X
@Georgee Have to say, I much prefer the new art style. A vibrant cross between Skyward and Wind Waker - which is much more up my alley than the overly murky palette of Twilight and the Wii U tech demo.
Dat Link tho....(it has to be illegal to be that good lookn'). Game looks beautiful, already have the haters on the art style, but man I love it! Open world Zelda....wow! 2015 can't come soon enough!
Woohooo!!!!! Looks amazing, but why blue?
Never had a problem with wind waker ( Cell shaded ) really enjoyed it and loved twilight P art style , this looks like it's a mix between TP and WW style graphics but as long as the gameplay is good
@CainTrain maybe that's the a tire we get in the start of the game like in WW then we get the heros cloths
@NintendoGarage or maybe we can choose Link's clothing? But I guess clothing doesn't matter if you're that epic..
