Yesterday, during The Game Awards, Sega revealed Sonic Frontiers - a brand-new type of Sonic experience coming to the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms in holiday 2022.
Sonic's new adventure will give players the freedom to explore a visually stunning "open-zone" realm known as the Starfall Islands. It will feature lush and expansive landscapes such as dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, and sizzling deserts.
Although we already got a quick glimpse of some of these scenes in the official reveal trailer, Sega has now released six screenshots via PR and the game site for Frontiers focused on the scenery. Here they are, in all their glory. Enjoy!
As previously noted, Sonic Frontiers is being handled by Sonic Team Japan. The game's narrative has also reportedly been penned by Ian Flynn - head writer of IDW's current Sonic the Hedgehog comic. And if you're looking for a bit more information about this upcoming game, it seems the mysterious voice in the game's trailer is Amy.
What about the Sonic 2 movie? We've got a gallery for that as well:
What are your early impressions of Sonic Frontiers? What are you expecting from the Nintendo Switch version? Tell us below.

So serious question, am I the only one who can't see this running the best on switch? Like, at all? I feel like we'll run into a situation where the game would get delayed on switch only, and then be released like months later in an "ok at best" state
@Doofenshmirtz yeah when seeing the trailer I thought “oh well I guess this game won’t be running on the switch” and even if it does, I don’t see it running well
@Doofenshmirtz
What will actually happen is that the game will be released on all platforms simultaneously, with the Switch version running and looking badly. It will still nevertheless be the best-selling version of the game.
Please don't screw this up Sonic Team
@Doofenshmirtz I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was the case, or if the switch version's framerate would be cut in half while all the others run at 60.
Sonic… Sonic…
Open your eyes…
(Amy’s theme song starts)
My switch is dying man.
You know what would be sad? If this becomes a cloud game just so the gorgeous art style could be maintained.
I'm really intrigued to see how this turns out. Just running around a big world with Sonic's speed should be great if they can get the physics right. One of my favourite parts from recent 3D Sonics was actually the start of the Zelda stage in Sonic Lost World. I loved the more open design, and thought it suited the controls and physics of that game quite well.
So I'm going with cautious optimism for now.
Not a single loops to be found, you can't make a Sonic game without loops Sega or else it's not really a Sonic game. Hopefully there will be some in the final game.
Where are the enemies? The rings? Sure it looks pretty but I'm worried about the gameplay
Looks like the Sonic game I always wanted.
I'm still wondering how this is gonna work as a Sonic game. This feels like concept work for Xenoblade Chronicles 3--not that that's a bad thing.
More concerned if the game will be actually good and not have glitches/bugs(even the best possible hardware can't prevent that). Sonic Team would be smart to optimize this really well on Switch because that's where it's gonna sell the most.
Man, I'm so sick and tired of open world games. Doesn't help that this also looks inspired by BotW visuals, with all the nature and ancient ruins. This honestly looks so generic and uninspired. Wish they would just make Adventure 3 already. At least that would be hype
Developers always aim for the higher power consoles. I'm so tired of it. (I know why they do it, I just don't want to buy two consoles because I like modern games AND Nintendo titles)
BOTW Blue Hedgehog and BOTW Black girl were two of the best games shown. I think they are both going to improve on BOTW Greek Gods.
@Doofenshmirtz
Its modern sonicteam/sega
You'll be lucky if it runs on anything well at launch.
99% empty flat plains because anything more would have to rely on a dynamic unautomated movement using physics but this is too spooky for modern Sonic Team to ever consider. If the developer that couldn’t even make 2D platforming in Forces not feel stiff and janky somehow made a open world 3D Sonic that had fluid physics based movement that even felt a quarter as good as Sonic Utopia it would be one of the biggest leaps a developer has made in the history of this medium, it would be in the level of Rocksteady going from Urban Chaos to Batman Arkham Asylum.
They probably enjoy the endless BOTW comparisons as it avoids being compared to one of the best if not the best controlling 3D platformer ever made that should have been used as template for a open world Sonic, Odyssey is too fundamentally antithetical to their game design for that to happen.
If I'm going to play it, it won't be on my switch, it will be on my Steam Deck or Series X. I'm not paying $60 for the most inferior version of the game.
@80sGamer
You're in luck. This game will probably be 40 dollars at launch. Not 60.
@HedgehogEngine Ironic name for not knowing how the Hedgehog Engine 2 performed for Forces on Switch. Sonic Team was unable to get Forces running in 60 visually on Switch, so the frame rate was locked at 30. However, the controls play at 60. I doubt we'll see that bizarre set up return again though.
@JR150 Okay I'm not paying $40 for the most inferior version of the game when I can pay the same amount of money for better quality.
I like it a lot, actually. I just hope there will be more variety, as Sonic has a lot of different environments. Let's hope that place is not that big and we can visit more areas in the game.
I don’t know, Jim. Just doesn’t look like a Sonic game. Nondescript otherworldly ruins but no checkering? Grasslands but no green hill? Blue skies but no Sega?
So much negativity on here. Why not wait until there’s some actual gameplay footage before judging?
@NinChocolate I agree. This looks so generic and the lack of Sonic theme/design in the world is a worry. Yes, this is just an early trailer. Yes, open world sonic could be amazing.
It's the trailer that's the issue really. It really is a terrible trailer... and that doesn't fill me with any confidence as a result.
This game is going to play horrible on Switch.
Sonic Teams efforts on Switch ports are poor to begin with.
I love Switch, yet technically it is very long in the tooth these days.
@nocdaes Exactly, It's like having a ready realistic world and they are throwing ...Sonic in there... It looks like out of place.
Now give us an actual image or footage from the switch version
When all else fails, copy your superiors. Honestly, this reeks of the class dunce cheating off of the top of the class.
Cynicism aside, this could (surprisingly) redeem the Sonic brand or demonstrate yet again why Nintendo will continue to reign supreme. Time - of course - will tell.
I can’t even fathom how Sonic fits into this world as he clashes unfavourably against the semi-realistic art style. At least Zelda was artistically consistent with both its world and its inhabitants. And unless Sonic can sprint across this world at high speeds, why even bother?
@ModdedInking : Because there’s nothing more gorgeous than video artefacts flooding the screen, right? At least that was my experience when sampling cloud games on Switch.
Personally, I’ll take lower quality textures but a natively rendered game any day.
@Mattock1987 To be fair that's on Sega, why does this game that's out in less than 12 months have absolutely no gameplay shown?
@Madder128 That's why I'm expecting a typical Sonic Team bomb. The Nintendo Systems are usually the best place for Sonic to sell by a landslide,like Colours did as well just on Wii as Generations on 360,PS3 and PC.
So if they had sense they'd design it to run smoothly on Switch foremost and then have the other platforms run it at higher resolutions/framerates. Then if its good it might just end up a bigger success.
@Dr_Lugae because it’s a teaser.
@Dr_Lugae Colours Ultimate did best on Switch and we know how that turned out.
Heck Mania did too, and that game at launch was several updates behind for a while on Switch with some unique bugs.
With Sonic games you're often going so fast that you don't tend to notice the scenery too much. Will be interesting to see how this one turns out but I'm not getting my hopes up.
It just doesn't look like a Sonic game to me.
At this point, I'll be more shocked if it isn't a complete faceplant.
First thing they will do is remove or simplify the grass and foliage. Small loss. But if the decent lighting does not remain it will look much worse. Resolution and framerate could be low as well.
I don't know much about Sonic, but aren't his main games supposed to be jump 'n' runs/platformers? 🤔
Sonic Frontiers seen to be aimed at high powerful consoles such as Xbox Series X/S e PS5, i don't see this game running well on Switch given it weak hardware.
@NintonicGamer BOTW told the devs you can have an empty open world and still sell millions.
This game looks and sounds like they modded botw to have sonic in it.
@Octane I wouldn’t call botw’s open world empty. Around every corner there are korocs, shrines, enemies, weapons, puzzles, armor, and beautiful landscape. Almost every inch of that map has effort put into by the devs. However if you mean that people think that botw’s map is empty because they’ve barely played it and then devs think it’s ok to only copy the openness without anything else, then you would be right.
Plenty of time between now and release for a Switch Pro to drop 😉😉
But yeah…I’m not expecting this to look great on Switch, unless they’ve been smart about it and Switch is the lead platform while the other versions are upgraded ports like Yooka Laylee Impossible Lair. All the recent Sonic games have sold best on Switch IIRC so would make sense to focus on making the Switch version a priority…get the feeling that won’t be the case though.
So basically it's Sonic: Breath of the Wild.
@WoomyNNYes Yeah damn developers wanting to maximize what technology brings and allow to push the boundaries for their games. Instead everything should be held back by the Switch.
I find it genuinely hilarious that there are actually people who still believe that games like this will work well on the Switch.
I mean look at the visuals, Sonic is a fast paced game, this will run like absolute ass on the Switch, we all know it, lets stop pretending.
I really hope they don't screw up this look how badly sonic 06 almost killed the sonic franchise after that I'm keeping my expectations low for this one.
@Casco I totally understand why they do it. It just seems ridiculous needing to buy two consoles ($300+$500 USD) because I like both modern games AND nintendo titles. I would gladly pay more for a more powerful Nintendo console so I could play both modern games and Nintendo titles.
"These captures were likely taken on PC, PS or XB (Image: SEGA)"
Umm, you mean Super Switch/Switch Pro?
By next year, we will of course have the most powerful home console system Nintendo has ever released ready for the holidays, right? 16K support in handheld. 32K support while docked. Bundled with Nintendo's new Nintendo DS 32K TV, that folds up like a picture frame on the wall when both panels aren't needed.
All for the low, low, low price of $4,999.99
What happened with the colorful Sonic world. Why does Sega insist on using real life worlds for Sonic. Cartoon characters in realistic worlds don't match, and yes also Mario Odyssey with donk city and it's real people.
I hope this game will bring Sonic back on track but looking at these screenshots....
From what I see, it's just a generic realistic world with Sonic in it... It doesn't look and feel like a Sonic game, it's so generic with no style that you could switch Sonic with any other fantasy characters without noticing any difference. That's a shame.
Where are Green Hills? Holy cow, Sonic is a cartoony character!
Sega, just look at Super Mario Odyssey and learn from it!
Did no one here play Sonic Adventure 1? It was sonic in a realistic environment with portals to more traditional sonic levels. There was even a jungle with ancient ruins that you could go to. This seems pretty reminiscent of that. To be fair, it’s a modern Sonic game so it still has a decent chance to be terrible, but this matches up fairly well with what we’ve seen in the past and can kind of be that answer to the Adventure 3 chanting that always comes up.
@DeusX
Actually, the realistic people in new donk city and the T-Rex really looked out of place in Mario Odysse. But I agree that Sega should take a lesson from the Mario games. I could see a 3d world game work with Sonic.
This is like those stupid "X character in Unreal Engine 4" youtube videos.
I don't think Sega will ever figure out how to make a truly great 3D Sonic.
So Skyrim but with Sonic the Hedgehog.
No more open world games for the sake of making an open world game please. Sega already has one recent bad open world game out, it doesn't need two.
The Legend of Sonic: Blur of the Wild
@NintonicGamer Don't worry, I'm guessing there will be both enemies AND rings in this game!
Anyone else have Sonic fatigue? Like Sega rolls out a new Sonic game so much that my hopes are dimmed at this point.
This doesn't feel very Sonic to me, but they may impress me yet.
@HeadPirate Seriously, that game's success has had such a resounding effect on the gaming landscape. Its aesthetic has become what 3D Grand Theft Auto did to world design.
Looking good, botw heavy "inspired"
@Mountain_Man yes
@meltendo The last mainline Sonic will have be 5 years when Frontiers comes out.
Love how NL likes to state the obvious, as if it needed to be said that the screens are not from the Switch version. We're pretty accustomed to this, by now.
Pretty ambitious. It's pretty tho
Hopefully it's fun to play
I am crying inside. It is not happening. No mobile miracle here. (Unless they do something with Sabre Interactive. they manage World War Z)
@Doofenshmirtz Either the Switch version will end up being a cloud version, or it'll end up being an entirely different version of the game, made specifically for the switch, akin to the DS versions of games. It'll probably play differently, and look nothing alike this one. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up with linear levels, while the others are open-world or something.
@Doofenshmirtz
I love your username
looks bland and boring. Sonic Adventure had him running on a sky high highway with skyscrapers everywhere and he'd jump from skyscraper to skyscraper jumping on bad guys and springjumps and powerups until eventually you're running through some glass and running down the side of a sidescraper. The first level has him running away from a whale on a series of breaking docks on the coast. There's a casino, there's a level where you get sucked up into a tornado. The Dreamcast didn't have the best graphics, but that was a lot more interesting to look at that anything they've shown here.
@Doofenshmirtz If 'Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' can run on the Switch and we are going to get 'Breath of the Wild 2' and 'Pokémon Legends: Arceus' on the Switch next year too then I don't see why not. This games looks very similar to Breath of the Wild except with Sonic in it and similar games like 'Immortals: Fenyx Rising' and 'Ary and the Secret of Seasons' run fine on the Switch too.
I know not many people are big fans of the adventure game’s but they were practically my childhood growing up. If this game is anything like those games or surpass it, I’d be so happy .
@meltendo I just think it's the lack of gameplay.
I'm somewhat floored people aren't suspicious that the game is out in 12 months. Sega has a bad rep for Sonics gameplay and they're trying a big new open world style which introduces new challenges.
But they've decided not to demonstrate gameplay and give us some confidence that this game will play well.
Contrast to BOTW where in 2014 Miyamoto and Aonuma were happy to showcase the gameplay 3 years before the launch.
Yeah I don’t know about this. To me sonic is one of those titles that should never go open world. The main gimmick of sonic is that he’s fast so how is he supposed to go fast when you have a massive world like this. Like how will sonic climb cliffs? How is sonic supposed to come to a complete stop? Hopefully I eat my words because this might not go well. This might prove my point that BOTW’s impact on gaming is overrated because now everyone wants games to have open worlds even if they just can’t work.
I have a small glimmer of hope for this. I haven't enjoyed a Sonic game for over a decade but I did enjoy the high-speed day stages of Sonic Unleashed. It would be cool if they incorporated that into getting from one area of the world to another.
I am kind of concerned as to how this will look on Switch, if need be I will just play it on PS5.
@80sGamer that is funny since steam deck is dead on arrival
Is copying Breath of the Wild becoming a trend now in gaming (especially the cliff overlook)? First we had Genshin Impact, then some random indie games, followed by Pokemon, and now Sonic.
@NintonicGamer 1. It's on a new island so the landscapes we know such as loops, corkscrew, etc are properly not here.
2. Rings probably aren't currency on this island
So generic. Wish they'd just do a sequel to mania. Didn't that sell well enough?
Not sure about open world.. Unless it's a hub?
Otherwise they should have taken the greatly fun SA2 and improved and expanded on what made it work.
@Maplemiles the denial is strong with you.
Here we go (again?)
Openworld Zelda
Openworld Kirby
Openworld Sonic
What next? Openworld Metroid?
@fR0z3nS0u1 Openworld Tetris
@80sGamer it's the other way around and your the the one who is in denial
If you say so. Steam Deck will run this game better than the Switch, that is fact. Not opinion. If you think that the Steam Deck is dead in the water and that the Switch is technically better, then.....well..... you enjoy that notion (and the downgraded port).
@Doofenshmirtz I feel like this is going to be another super scaled down game that doesnt belong on the Switch but is just being crammed onto it. A true next gen game just cant work on the Switch
@80sGamer no I'm saying the steam deck is simply a failure I never made any mention of its performance. It's a device that only will have a small following but will be a mainstream failure at best and I can't see this thing selling 10 plus million. For your information sonic games since Maine and forces sell better on switch.
Steam deck is only heard from games and I can tell you the Casuals will not know what this thing is and the oled switch is a sellout and thinking everysingle person will go from switch to steam deck is only your stupid water dream
@maplemiles what the hell haha. All I mentioned was that the Switch will have the worst version of the game and I'll be playing it on Steam Deck as it will run better.
Where has all this mention of sales and casuals moving from Switch to Steam Deck come from? Plus you said the Steam Deck is "Dead on arrival" smh. Damn these fanboys are crazy.
@80sGamer the Casual moving to switch came from comments on youtube with steam deck about people saying "Now we can all play switch emulators". Also their maybe a switch pro coming even with switch being the inferior version.
They may improve the switch version in some way but I'm likely very wrong. To me if I had a powerful gaming PC I'm not picky on graphics. I'm enjoying playing DragonBall z kakarot on the game it i had doughts that game will run awful on switch but it was a smooth 30 frames.
I also grow up with the PS2 and PS3 and Nintendo handhelds
