Believe it or not, but Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is actually quite a good game on the Switch. If you played this version on release, you might not have been so impressed with the shoddy performance, frame rate issues, weaker assets and extensive loading times. Since then, however, 505 Games has rolled out multiple patches to improve the overall experience.
The latest update (version 1.04) is a minor one compared to some of the previous patches but is still very much appreciated. It resolves stability issues, fixes a dialogue issue, includes some animation performance improvements and contains some general bug fixes.
-Stability issues, such as crashes experienced while interacting with bookcases.
-Fixed an issue with corruption during dialogue which could lead to crash
-Some Performance improvements related to animations
-General Bug Fixing
505 also mentioned it would keep working on performance improvements for the Switch and explained how this latest update made the Switch version "nearly identical" to the other platforms, in terms of content:
While we will continue to work on overall performance improvements for Switch, this update brings the game’s platforms to a nearly identical state for content. This is an important step leading into the upcoming Zangetsu release, which we will talk more about in the near future.

Well that makes it more appealing. I'm hearing from redditers that the changes don't make it run too much better but I wouldn't know.
I have the game on PC but I'd love to have it on Switch too.
Does this bring it in line with the quality of the other releases?

Reception seems to be lukewarm
I think the graphics could be better but overall it seem well enough to have fun.
I bought this at launch but haven’t really gotten into it. Glad I’ve held off as I’d like to play it when it’s the best possible. Game really deserves the TLC it’s getting from the devs as from what I’ve seen and played, it really is a good game... just needed some loving care and attention from the devs.
I still haven't played it since release knowing that they're still trying to make improvements. I still can't believe they launched the game in an very unplayable (at least for me) state.
Seems I need to wait longer. It was tempting but good thing I held off buying physical since it really doesn't make any sense having a cartridge with a bad performing base game out of the box.
Is it 60 fps yet?
@Dragonilm It will probably never be 60 fps.
It should be 60fps from the start, if it was given the proper attention and some fair compromises were made. This would be the preferred platform for such a game, it's a shame really!
I played thru the game on switch and had 2 hard crashes, some small stutters, and only a few areas with long load times. My only issues was the muddiness of the characters. If I recall correctly, there were some that looked better than others. The rest of the castle/world looked good to me. I loved the game honestly and it was a highlight for me. Very close to my top 5 for 2019. Prob #6 or #7.
Well I've waited this long, I guess it's now or never.
I'd already decided to wait for v1.04 specifically after I'd heard there was still a little more to do on top of v1.03
I’ve always been thankful I couldn’t wait the extra week and bought it on my One X. I still hope they figure it out eventually on Switch.
Can I capture video yet?
@Kalmaro That reddit thread has only 23 comments, and most of them aren't even talking about the patch. In fact, I count only two comments talking about the patch: one guy praising the performance improvements, and another guy reporting some possible new bugs.
@Kalmaro I played about half way on the last patch. I can't say I was too impressed with the changes made. Northern areas in the castle still saw frame rate drops. Other conflicts were miserable. Jumping between loading zones is still problematic. Where you're left hanging to complete an angular jump, only to have the long load time drop you back down forcing you to sit through the load 2 more times.
It's great when the game runs like its supposed too. Having it on the go can be an entertaining experience. Then you hit the technical hitches like the above or the performance dips at the worst possible time causing you to miss jumps, strikes, and ability activations that are crucial to your survival or your sanity. Then you just don't come back. I've played this game on every platform to completion once, except the Switch version. I've given up hope. I'm just thankful the Vita version didn't release, because then I would have been heart broken at the bad performance that would certainly have been the case given the Switch's performance.
im still pissed they should of had switch version all polished up before release instead releasing it broken and glitchy reason why iga needs to find another dev to do any future bloodstaind sequel switch version instead of 505 who dropped the ball big time.
After the last patch and this one I feel the game plays well. I have been enjoying it a lot and it really scratches that SOTN itch, great game
Waiting for the update that refunds me.
MUCH better, I actually restarted after this update because I hadn't really got far before and man does it look better. There's actually puddles of water now! Literally the only thing graphically inferior is the glass smashing on the text when entering new areas. Also for some reason there is still a text bug right at the start of the game that does leave a bit of a bad first impression (it's just a word missing in the text that is spoken to you anyway). But yeah, those are the only two things and they are nothing really. Surprised those little things weren't fixed but overall everything else is so much better. I am satisfied, and knowing that they are actually still working on patches to the switch version is great. But yeah, it is mostly on par with the other versions now
Bought this on release back in June and played through 80% of it in it’s release state. There were definitely issues but I was starving for SOTN content so bad I didn’t care. I recently started a new game from scratch once the new patch was released in November and while there are still some issues like loading time between rooms (only experienced this in one area) the overall appearance and gameplay were way better. Now I’m addicted trying to unlock every weapon/shard...ah brings back good old memories of grinding in SOTN!
For me, side-scrollers play better on handhelds. It reminds me of castlevania games on GBA. I was excited for this. The difference is that the GBA games were designed to run on a GBA. They worked properly. I have an old-school belief that games should work when you buy them. They now have a problem with the online reviews not being updated to reflect the improvements in the game. I think I will wait to see a definitive edition on the successor to the switch.
I tried it pre- and post (first) update. The update really made a difference, and this one improves it further. I'm glad the developers care enough to keep improving the game.
i didn't have much problem with it, got it after the first time it went on sale and beat it thinking it was already fixed, 100% the map, beat every side quest, got every shard, and went nuts on crafting too, was my game of the year.
I 100% this a few months ago on One while I was home sick, achievements and all. Won't touch this till new content comes out. Great game but it needed way more attention before release
I'll buy this game when it becomes as good as the other versions. I still find it hard to believe that the developers would put out such a poor Switch version in the first place. Contrarily, the developers of Dragon Quest XI had the good taste to release the game on other platforms first, and only released the Switch version a year later, when they had done it right.
Too late, I already bought it on Steam. Should of released it not busted out of the gate.
I saw that change, I wouldn't say this is identical to the other versions at all.
Just got this game on the Switch for my Birthday, great news for me!
........ I am stuck at the beginning of the game though hahah. Not used to these kind of games.
As someone who backed the project, I'm not surprised they released the Switch version in the poor state it was and then took so long to come up with some fixes. From the Kickstarter updates, it became clear that the people involved were shady. In the case of the Switch version, it became their most popular version so they had dollar signs in their eyes. They probably had to hit that deadline in order to fund the further development they neglected. The Switch version was always an afterthought until it became so popular. Then they chose to lie about the game. They lied about a lot. I'm glad I was able to sell my PC key and, thanks to ebay, I somehow made a little bit of money on this mess.
@Zyph I 100% skipped the physical for the same reason.
The most frustrating thing is that many have opted to buy the game on a second platform (in addition to having it for the switch.)
This terrible release is being rewarded with even more copies sold!
@TheWingedAvenger The differences between that is that Bloodstained's development was first started way back before Switch was even a thing. Also they had to cancelled both the Wii U and PS Vita ports just to make the Switch version. My guess is that they still weren't too familiar with the Switch hardware yet so now they are fixing what should had been fix from the get-go. I don't blame them either, they did release the Switch version just so Switch fans don't have to wait long to play it but problems still arise that were missed the first time through.
On PC Game Pass. Play it for $1, call it a day.
Awesome, after 1 or 2 updates I'll finally get to play this game.Looks super fun,but I want it to be as smooth as possible
I finally started playing this recently, just beat it on Monday. I really enjoyed it, but it’s too bad they released it before it was finished, marring a great game forever. Before I updated I checked the version on the cartridge, and it literally said 0.1.
@Diogmites
Lol you'll be waiting a long time for that one to get approved.
I may finally get around to playing it. It's been in my backlog waiting for updates. Just need to finish Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, then I will be on it.
@GrandScribe No. It doesn't say that. It says Quantity.
Oh, I believe it's a good game on Switch. I've played it since June, and most of my current 75% on the map was unlocked even before the previous patches. Outside a couple boockcase crashes, one rumble glitch and the noticeably long initial loading screen (if Miriam dies, the latest save boots up considerably faster afterwards), it's been an astronomically smoother experience for me than what many others paint it as. I've been legitimately stumped by in-game stuff (like the goddamn spikes or the several hours I spent bouncing among dead ends because I didn't notice a familiar glow here or failed to realize the full range of a certain boss shard ability's application there), but never by aspects like framerate or lag. Mileage is truly a thing that may vary.
Then it is time for me to boot the game up.
Not buying a broken game! No matter how many patches it’s had!
I have just started to play it this week and loving it- got the physical copy for £20 with a steel book case which looks awesome. Cant comment from before the patch but so far runs well and looks good.
I saw a comparison and I stills looks bad on frame rate and loading times and that is the only thing that matters to me as visual fidelity is not important in my book. I think I will just get it on pc in the end of the day
@Balta666 If you are getting it for PC today it is 30% off on the Humble Bundle store for another 7 days. Or an additional 20% if you are a humble bundle monthly sub.
@Agramonte You should support it better. There are very few Metroidvania who offer as much gameplay variety as Bloodstained. It's a true Igavania with tons of gameplay option to unlock and experiment with the shards system. It's a great game and I hope we'll got more like that.
I played the whole game pre-performance patch (mostly in tabletop mode) and while there were a few hiccups here and there, the game wasn't in as terrible of a state the internet makes it out to be. Input lag was slightly noticeable, but I could easily compensate for it.
I did play post 1.03, and it was noticeably more responsive. I'll do a second playthrough, eventually. My Switch backlog grew after Christmas (as did my backlog on other platforms), so it'll probably be a while before I ever get back to it - especially with Dragon Quest XI being one of the games in said backlog.
@Dragonilm The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro versions aren't even a consistent 60.
@glaemay When you get a free bottle of Soda for buying a Pizza. The Soda guy did not give you that for Free. The Pizza guy is covering the cost for you.
Microsoft is running the $1 promotion not the publishers - they get payed. And Microsoft cant put games up without reaching a licensing deal with the owners, and whatever they getting is worth it because Indies are flocking to PC Game Pass.
I had preordered it for switch physical (first preordered switch game). Once I saw how bad input lag was I traded it for the ps4 version, which worked out since my switch game came with a ps4 steel book anyway. I’m annoyed I lost money though. I learned a valuable lesson on preordering games.
I need to get back and finish this, I got impatient and finally just played through a majority of the game while on vacation in handheld mode. I had several issues when it was docked so maybe that stuff is mostly fixed when I get around to finishing it up.
One of my absolute favorite games from 2019, despite any technical flaws.
@SilentHunter382 thanks for the note but I believe humble bundle gives you steam keys and I don't use steam (don't like game launchers, reason why I am a classic GOG guy)
And I was just wondering if I wanted to buy it right now, guess the answer is still no. I refuse to buy a subpar experience.
@Balta666 Ya they give steam keys. I used gog as well but most for older games and cdpr post witcher 2 games
“505 also mentioned it would keep working on performance improvements for the Switch and explained how this latest update made the Switch version "nearly identical" to the other platforms, in terms of content.”
Yeah, I don’t care about ‘content parity’, I expected ‘quality parity’ when I pre-ordered this. It’s clear that will never happen, so Iga and his team shall remain on my Blacklist.
Where is Sam Fisher, I’ve got a job for him. Haha
I played version 1.03 and it already was very good. Only the first stage(the ship) can realy note diferences in the scenario from the other versions beacuse the water effect.
Are some bugs, but nothing which realy disturb.
Good game but I dealt with at least 3 crashes on version 1.03 and slow down (spinning tower, I'm looking at you). I'm glad I played it, but I still expected more, I dunno. Maybe if there's a follow-up in the series it can get some things done better next time. At least it wasn't a Mighty No. 9 situation lol
I got this on PS4 through Kickstarter and I may actually double-dip and buy the Switch version when it's done being patched up, to play through with the DLC characters, as it's a good fit for portable play.
From what I've seen of the Switch version, it doesn't seem to run badly, it's just somewhat inferior to the other platforms, which is understandable.
Amazing game, regardless.
@geox30 Yeah I look at games like this and think well Odyssey could and this is no Odyssey. Started playing last week and have been enjoying so far. That said Symphony of the Night was my first PS1 game for a good month so is like flipping Gojira's smile upside down when Tokyo comes into site. Just cant be done.
@Zyph
Agreed. But in this specific case, and if you still would enjoy having the physical release.. the japanese physical version is 1.03 out of the box. At least the one I got is. The japanese release was delayed so many times, so I think that the initial version of thr game was never even printed.
@gamekill Does it have an English option? If it does then I might get one xD
Picked up the physical version for £20 today in Argos. So good timing with this patch update.
The GOTY release will have all the patches on one cartridge and feature a...finished game.J/K
@KevTastic84 Yes, I got it today in the Argos clearance sale for £20. Played for a while without updating just so I can "feel the benefit" of the update. 😁
Had this preordered at launch and was very disappointed.I haven’t touched it since as I had a ton of way better playing games but I’ll give it another try now.
