We recently ran a poll looking at the sexiest consoles Nintendo and the company has put out some mighty fine-lookin' hardware over the years. There was one system that gets us particularly excited, though — the good ol' GameCube — and it seems you readers are in agreement judging from the results of that poll.
Yes, the Japan-only Spice Orange variety won the vote by a significant margin, but given that it was the only variant of the standard GameCube to choose from, we thought we should take a look through all the options and find out if orange really is the new black (in the realm of Nintendo hardware, at least).
We ran a similar feature asking your favourite flavour of Nintendo 64, and we have to say the results surprised us a little — the faithful 'Charcoal' held its own against the rest of the spectrum and we're intrigued to find out how the standard purple (sorry, Indigo) GameCube holds up against its peers.
For the sake of brevity, we're only including GameCube variants that were commercially available to purchase in at least one territory (so no one-off promo pieces or limited run competition prizes). We've also culled any versions that were simply a standard colour with the circular disc 'window' on top switched out — we're really interested in the overall livery and, frankly, just swapping in a small 'faceplate' on top doesn't really count, does it? There were several Platinum Silver variants with a different disc window packed in (Donkey Konga, Pokémon XD, Metal Gear Solid), although the Metroid Prime black 'Cube may have been the most common. If any of these are your favourite, vote for the corresponding colour and let us know in the comments which faceplate you prefer.
So, before we get to the poll (or before we head off in search of rare Japanese disc windows), let's remind ourselves of the main GameCube variants that anyone with cash money could buy back in the day...
Nintendo GameCube console variants
The website Console Variations has a nice round-up of each and every GameCube in existence, including one-off designs, competition pieces (MTV prize consoles, for example), all the disc window variants, and other curios — check those out for the full rundown. Here, we'll be sticking to the standard versions that hit shop shelves in at least one territory.
The standard Indigo GameCube
Nintendo made a statement by making the 'default' console — the one it launched with and used in marketing and promotional materials — purple. It certainly stood out from the dull grey-black boxes the competition were selling. At the time, though, the PS2 was the slickest console on the block; a convenient DVD-playing lifestyle addition which also played some pretty amazing video games and appealed to image-conscious teens. Nintendo's cute purple box — with its chunky handle, tiny discs and kidney-shaped controller buttons — looked like a baby's toy by comparison.
We'd argue that the bold design of this immensely durable, solid little box has aged better than its rivals, though. If you find a clean example that doesn't have knocks on any of its eight corners (or an oddly yellowed Slot B door), this is still one of the handsomest consoles ever made in our books.
The Jet Black GameCube
We assume Nintendo went for 'Jet Black' to give this some pizazz — 'Boring Black' doesn't have the same ring to it. Still, the black version gave you the option of a hue that wouldn't attract the nearest three-year-old quite so readily. It looks infinitely better with the orange power light lit up, we reckon. You can't go wrong with black, right?
The Platinum Silver GameCube
When it comes to cars, silver is the bland compromise you make when you want something more exciting than grey, but you've also got an eye on resale value. For a games console, though, silver is a tad more risqué. And 'Platinum Silver'? Well, that's positively racey.
The Platinum Silver 'Cube (pictured above with a WaveBird controller and a black Game Boy Player) was repackaged a few times with different disc windows, and a nice clean one is a thing of beauty whatever 'faceplate' it's sporting.
The Spice Orange GameCube
This Japanese exclusive was the cause of much jealousy for GameCube aficionados in the West. To this day the Spice Orange GameCube inspires jealous looks and furtive eBay searches amongst fans who never got around to importing one of these lovely creatures.
The Nintendo Life Spice Orange GameCube Club is a five-member group (at last count) of like-minded individuals who gather periodically to Slack chat about all things Spice-y. Is it the best GameCube going? That's your you to decide, dear readers, but the fact remains that you should join our club. Go on — you know you want to.
The Pearl White GameCube
A European-exclusive (see, we do sometimes get nice things!), the Pearl White GameCube is... well, it's a pearl white GameCube. Not much else to say, really — it's a lovely thing when it catches the light just so. It also came in a bundle with Mario Smash Football (or Mario Strikers, if you prefer).
Japan also received its own white GameCube — an extremely limited Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles version that was actually a different, glossier white and came bundled with a Game Boy Player, too. Apparently, only 150 were ever made, so we'll mention it here rather than give it its own section. Sensible, no?
The Starlight Gold GameCube
A Toys 'R' Us exclusive in Japan, it's a gold GameCube. It's not spicy, but we still want one.
The Resident Evil 4 GameCube
A European bundle with Resident Evil 4, at first glance you might think this was a Silver console sitting on a black Game Boy Player, but this one actually combined a silver top with a back bottom. Throw in an RE4 disc window and you've got a cool (if lacklustre) console variant. At least the controller got the RE4 logo.
The Tales of Symphonia GameCube
https://twitter.com/RetroGameSearch/status/1311641117201444864?s=20
Now we're really cooking! This pleasant little pastel green/mint console only saw the light of day in Japan and, somewhat oddly, France (although the French bundle didn't include the Game Boy Player).
Unfortunately, the entire casing is prone to discolouring, much like the controller port plates and memory card doors on all GameCubes. You'll need a sizeable budget if you want a pristine one, too.
The Gundam Char GameCube
Released in Japan only, this red console came with a slightly darker red Game Boy Player and a Gundam Char figure. There was also a special WaveBird available to complete the set.
The Hanshin Tigers GameCube
Produced to commemorate the Hanshin Tiger's JBL win in 2003, this Japan-only variant came bundled with a bag and a team shirt. Another console that's prone to discolouring with age, unfortunately. Nobody wants a console that looks like a baseball shirt covered in baby vomit.
The Panasonic Q
Oh my! Yes, we've spoken before of this final Japan-only version. This total hardware revision came courtesy of Panasonic and combined the general functionality of a standard GameCube with some sexy blue highlights around the controller ports, a mirrored face to show off every last fingerprint, and the ability to play DVDs with its full-sized sliding disc tray.
Only the dull, dark grey controller lets the side down. Otherwise, just look at it!
So, we've recapped all the major variants, but which 'Cube is your absolute favourite? Scroll down and let us know in the poll below:
Feel free to let us know below which GameCube(s) you have tucked away — or proudly displayed! — in your retro collection, and which one inspires lustful thoughts.

Gotta give my vote to the standard indigo. It's what I have so I'm quite fond of it.
Got the black, got to vote for it.
My personal favorite is the Japanese-exclusive variant that launched alongside Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes that came with a grey and silver-ish version of the console with the disc window replacing the GameCube text with the FOXHOUND logo
It also came with the original Metal Gear on a GameCube disc. It's probably one of the better third party game special editions for that console considering most of them don't do anything but just replace the text on the disc window
Jet black because it was the first console I ever got brand new courtesy of my girlfriend and I like it the most.
Looking at pretty much all of the other consoles, both Nintendo and otherwise, there's something so unique about that pleasing shade of indigo purple used for the GameCube and Game Boy Advance. I wish more consoles had that willingness to just be colorful outside of collector's editions.
The black one, because it’s the one I’ve owned since launch and it’s still going strong.
I had the jet black one but I voted for the Pastels of Symphonia variant.
The device shown under 'Panasonic Q' is not a GameCube.
Jet Black all day, everyday.
i had imported panasonic one anda lovely looking machine. One few consoles i made a profit when i sold it lol
You know, I wouldn't mind an indigo version of the Switch at some point. It really is a fetching color and would really stand out in handheld mode as well.
I love my purple gamecube. So many great hours, it defined my uni days (showing my age and general nerdy-ness). A true classic, I can't think of another console that has aged half as well.
Pearl White for me. Not sure pics do it justice, it looks truly lovely in the flesh.
Jet Black by far! Spice is the ugliest nintendo console of all time!
I bought the black one and had the black GBA bottom and matching LAN card. I bought it modded so I could use a physical switch to make it run games from Japan. Lost it all in a storage unit a while back. Ce la vie.
I do like the purple a lot. Maybe I’ll track one down one of these days. Aren’t they stupid expensive now tho?
It was jet black or pearl white for me.
I never heard of the Hanshin Tigers Gamecube before now but I am loving the pinstripe design.
Loved my platinum cube back in the day. Not long ago I bought a brand new in box ntsc platinum so I know the machine will probably outlast me..
I'd have loved a Panasonic Q. The choice not to play dvds was a big mistake. I remember getting my PS2 in 2001, and at the time a good standalone dvd player cost a lot more than a PS2, and I was able to play some great games. No-brainer. Then Mario Sunshine came along and for the first (and not last) time I became a 2-console gamer. Prior to that it was only Nintendo for me.
I have the jet black. Still looks great
Indigo is life.
I think I had black? Ah Nintendo's last console that was technically on par and even better than the PS2/Xbox in some areas before going down a different path with the Wii onwards.
I got the standard indigo.
I voted for Hanshin Tigers. That is damn nice.
Thought I was gonna give it to the gundam one for coming with red game boy player
The correct answer is the Gundam one, obviously. But I understand people like to have their own thoughts.
I got the indigo.
I don't understand people having their own thoughts.
My favourite version of the gamecube was the Wii.
If I was to have one (and assuming they were on equal footing of rarity), I would want the White.
I have a soft spot for the indigo one as I grew up with it but my favorite of the basic colors is still a tie between the platinum and black. Call me plain but they just look classy to me.
Standard colors aside, I never knew that Tales of Symphonia one existed but that’s probably my new favorite. Really sweet.
The purple one is iconic and I don't agree that it looked like "a babies toy" in comparison to the PS2 as the article states... I'd say it had personality and character compared to the PS2 which looked, well, like a DVD player.
Plus the purple GameCube looked so good with the people GBA. 😃
@DockEllisD Same. Immediately garnered my vote and instilled me with untold jealousy (though I love me my Jet Black GC).
Platinum Silver baby
I have a Jet Black one.
My favorite is the Jet Black. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, idk. My second favorite is probably that Hansin Tigers one. I mean, wow.
@JohnnyC I totally agree. Probably Nintendo would be different today: Gamecube would have been a big success, Nintendo would have tried to deliver the same graphical performance as Sony and Microsoft and would have a stronger focus on core gamers (maybe).
They’re all so amazing, how can you really choose? I had to default to the default.
@Max_the_German I think the GameCube was great and produced some stunning games. Rogue Leader was an amazing-looking launch title, Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Twilight Princess all looked great. The dvd functionality would have sweetened the deal, but on the other hand it was significantly cheaper at launch than the other two. I think I got mine new with Mario Sunshine for £160 when Mario Sunshine launched, whereas I paid £300 for my PS2 and had to buy a game separately.
Jet black was my original, before I got platinum and then back to jet black. I love them all tbh but black is my fav
I like the one that looks like a toaster
Me reading the list "Indigo is the way to go... but jet black is better...Gosh! That silver... had completely forgotten spice orange!"
Jet Black all day everyday.
With discs that small it was screaming for a more portable option with a built in screen. Something akin to the psone with optional screen but they could go even smaller.
I have a nostalgic soft spot for the indigo GameCube so I voted for that. Me and my brother got that for Christmas back in 2001, after all - we played it a ton!
The best one
I had a purple Japanese launch GameCube and I replaced it with a US silver GC after a year or so. That said, Spice Orange is definitely the best colour and I'd definitely get one in that colour if I was going to start playing GC games again.
Always wanted the spice orange GameCube but ended up with the indigo had an indigo GBA at the time as well looked nice when they were linked up miss the GameCube
F Zero gx was outstanding
I voted indigo. Black also looks amazing at the right angle.
I went with indigo back then because it was the “main” color. It really grew on me. I also had the same GBC.
I'm surprised by the number of jet black votes, I thought I'd be one of the few. But like most other people's reasoning, I voted for it because I grew up with it and have many fond memories.
Orange Spice was always really neat, but I associate it more with a gaming novelty than a true representation of that era.
I considered voting platinum - I never actually liked it that much, but I think the idea of a slight metallic look to the console is neat and also is very representative of the early 2000's to me (a lot of PS gear had this look as well around then).
As long as it is DOL-001, it deserves love.
The Panasonic Q solved one of the primary competitive issues with the PS2. Not only is it gorgeous, but it's the most unique Nintendo console I can think of. It's the only third party licensed machine (afaik). I love the early 2000's look, and I've always wanted one.
Platinum/silver just because it's what I have and thus I will always stand by it
The Platinum Silver and that WaveBird were mine, so they get my vote.
Voted Jet Black because that's what I had, but it's a great looking system regardless (seriously considered voting for Silver, White, Gold, or Gundam ones, they all look so great).
Cool to know about the Hanshin Tigers variant. The team gets mentioned in almost every Rumiko Takahashi interview I've read (mangaka of InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, & Urusei Yatsura) since it's her favorite team.
The Panasonic Q is great, but out of the standard ones, I think the Orange one is the coolest - even if it's nowhere near my favorite color. I have a controller like that, and I love it.
Like many on here I vote for the jet black because that was the one we had.
I had all of the color variants in the US and a Panasonic Q. The Panasonic Q wins hands down.
My vote goes go the standard Indigo its just a really nice color.
Simple Indigo. It's the most Gamecube-y colour. If the orange one came out alongside it in Europe as well, I may have picked that one, not sure, it would have been less special as well, and indigo is engraved in my brain as Gamecube, and Gamecube is engraved as good.
Nevertheless, it's my Tales of Symphonia GC that is hooked up to my tv. Unused for over a year now (not that much less use than my TV itself, as someone who grew up without, and with different Nintendo handhelds mostly), but it is still there, ready when needed.
@doctorhino
I remember finding an indigo portable screen for my son's Gamecube back then and even a car adapter. So he could play his Gamecube even on trips
I have Indigo, Spice Orange, Platinum Silver, Pearl White and Symphonic Green.
As such my heart was torn, but I went with Symphonic Green because... it's lovely.
Spice Orange is the best non-Indigo version. I had an Indigo and that is my favorite still.
Pearl White Gamecube looks very gorgeous.
But, White Wii is the Best machine to play both Wii and Gamecube games.
I got the platinum one as a kid and always thought it should've been the 'default' style.
But come on, favorite GameCube model is the Wii. Nothing beats having easy 480p and easy memory card managing. On top of the plethora of features you can get out of it nowadays.
The best is that fancy silver one that could play DVDs.
It has to be the Q, I have always wanted one of those ever since I saw it way back when.
Platinum without a doubt. I remember playing Soul Calibur II on a display at GameStop and being blown away by it. I went home grabbed boxed up my N64 along with the games In had with it and traded it in for the Platinum GC and a copy of Soul Calibur II.
I wish I still had my GameCube but the laser died on it and when I moved I just ended up selling it for parts to a local game store.
I tried buying a GameCube a few times from eBay, and local thrift shops but they always never worked long. Now with my current TV I can't even use a GameCube till someone brings out an HDMI Clone.
@rdrunner1178 oh I see it hooked into the handle. Lol that's probably the most useful utilization of that thing.
Always wanted Pumpkin Spice in the US but we never got it. Orange used to be my favorite color... used to be.
Panasonic Q as well for me
The Jet black one has always been my favorite as it match up perfectly with my Game Boy Player adapter and Hori Digital Pad. Any other color would had made that imperfection.
I voted for the silver set, however I bought a black GameCube and I absolutely loved it. Also I have enjoyed watching some youtubers that have bought the spice orange variations, what a lovely one it is too.
I got platinum as my gamecube in 2004 and that's what I like best.
I've had the platinum for almost 20 years now, and it's still a beauty
My first gamecube was black, though I had a purple wired controller, but then that was stolen out of my dorm on move-out day, so I picked up a Platinum Silver one using left over flex money on my university ID in the fall and it's still going strong!
I have black, but the purple is not only iconic, but my favorite color, so gotta go for it. Would like to get one some day.
never had a GameCube but the pearl white is my favorite with the spice orange in second
My favourite is one I'll likely never have - the Q.
i miss playing games in my platinum silver Game Cube.
We have a Pokémon XD Platinum Silver one and an indigo one. Love them both.
Glad to see my boy Standard Indigo leading the pack. The one true 'Cube.
Jet black is what I owned. I always liked how the silver looked but it released after I already bought my black one.
I never had a GameCube. When I bought my Wii, I got a bunch of bargain-priced GameCube games and had fun finding out what I had missed out on.
I bought mine in October 2003, so a little over a year after the European launch, right after it got its price cut to €99. Along with a memory card and Wind Waker. I got a purple (or I guess you call it indigo?) cause they were out of stock of the black models. Purple and black were the only two released when I bought mine, at least locally anyway.
The list is missing the Twin Snakes model by the way (though I guess it counts as a silver model with a different disc window)
Voted the platinum one because that's the one I bought bundled with Wind Waker and it is connected to a black Gameboy Player), but I also like the Spiced Orange one! (my second one is a good old purple with a spiced orange gameboy player <3 )
I had to vote for the orange as I really think it's the best looking one. Platinum is my number two pick, and is the color of the Gamecube I've had for many years. I agree, silver is nice for consoles, and not so much for cars. Some cars look fine in silver, but it's not a color I'd like. In fact, I'd take a gray car over silver every time.
Seriously, I don't get it. This is the ugliest system Nintendo has ever put out with the exceptions of the Virtual Boy and the American SNES. And the orange variant is especially hideous.
if Panasonic Q doesn't win I'm gonna be sad
Silver is the best.
gotta go for the gold...
I think the Twin Snakes Gamecube is worthy of inclusion if the Resident Evil 4 one is. Spice Orange takes it for me though.
Spice Orange for me. I just added one to my collection and it’s better then I had thought. My favorite color on my favorite system. That said I’d still like to add a white one and the Tales of Symphonia green one someday.
Don’t forget about the Pokemon Silver version either. That one is pretty cool as well.
Silver. I own an indigo one (bought on day 1 with Rogue Leader and Wave Race) and a silver one. I actually bought a silver one only because it was so cheap. The original purpose was to buy an extra controller before they were off the market. This was late in the GC era so when I was in Target and saw the silver system on sale for $100, I bought it instead of spending $50 just for a controller.
Originally had indigo and then the Panasonic q which I loved, imported both from lik sang , the DVD player was multi region as well
Indigo is the best but I must have missed the white one. Looks amazing!
I would go with the Panasonic Q because who wouldn't want a gaming console and a DVD player in one which is useful because I hate switching between the two when your TV only had one AV input so that why I bought the PS2 before the GameCube until I got a extension AV cord.
