The SNES Collection for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers has a lot of fancy built-in features such as the ability to rewind games, re-order games, play online with friends and save your progress at any time. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on one of the wireless Super Nintendo Controllers though, you may or may not have noticed one extra little thing.
When using this controller within the SNES app game menu, the standard sound effects you hear will be replaced with ones from Super Mario World. While it's nothing too crazy, it's perhaps one extra reason why you should consider picking up the new version of this gamepad.
Unfortunately, if you didn't get one of these controllers when they were made available on Nintendo's website, you might have to wait a while as a number of regions have now sold out. For more information about this controller, check out the Nintendo Life guide.
Were you surprised when you heard Super Mario World sound effects in the SNES app's menu? Did you manage to get one of these controllers in the end? Leave a comment down below.

I still love the European SNES controller colors. <3
Neat little extra but not good enough to get me to buy these. Too expensive + I really don't want to use a credit card. And the controllers I already have do just fine, and if I wanna hear Super Mario World sound effects, I'll just play.. y'know.. Super Mario World.
Still a neat little extra, for those who do have this.
If only it unlocked themes and folders...
Oooooh daaaannngg! Checkmate, 8bitdo!
/s
@Yosher for being near perfect representations of classic snes controllers (and wireless at that) these aren’t very expensive at all. The officially licensed sega Saturn Replica controllers cost around the same and they were wired.
These sold out? Glad I ordered mine day 1!
I gotta snag me the European SNES controllers when they come back.
Too expensive? Artificial scarcity? Can't the haters just leave these comment sections already? It's starting to get annoying reading dumb crap like this. The controllers are fine for their price. And they're loaded with hours of battery life. Only real bad thing about them is not having a home and screen capture button. They're fine and at least they're not being forced into a bundle like the NES controllers.
@Notshane L2 and R2 are about to blow your mind.
@Lizuka Artificial Scarcity?
how are you meant to sell more by selling less.
@Lizuka Really? More than likely people that were unable to get said product give up on said product.
Also the SNES first run was really never that hard to get hold of I noticed plenty of stores had SNES Mini's on sales for weeks before being sold out.
Also I still find that there's plenty in stock today for both consoles.
so he SNES never really been that scarce in the first place, just really proves that there was really never was any Artificial scarcity in the first place.
@Lizuka Look, Amiibo's low production is absolutely BS, but I think generally there's no grand conspiracy - Nintendo probably genuinely just keeps not realizing how high demand is for most of their products.
@Lizuka It looks like you've been catching up on your game theory huh xD. Literally every shortage of supply that Nintendo had has a logical explanation behind it. The Nintendo Switch shortage was caused by a lack of materials by Apple. The NES and SNES shortages were due to an underestimation of demand, Nintendo didn't think too highly of the mini-consoles and just saw them as novelty items for the holiday season. (Because why would Nintendo hold off on selling them during the holiday season, just to build up demand and offer more of them after the holiday season, after everyone is out of money?"
And the same can be said with the SNES controllers, as the NES controllers did not sell that amazingly. Which could come down to several factors, like how the controllers had to be bundled, their price, or how many people were still on the fence about Nintendo Online. So chances are Nintendo, understandably, underestimated the demand for the controllers and didn't think they'd sell as fast as they did. Again using the NES controllers as reference.
@Lizuka Also if your gonna bring up the Wii, atleast remember the fact that the Gamecube was a failure at the time, on par with the WiiU. With how low the Gamecube sold, chances are Nintendo didn't think the Wii would sell as massively as it had. So they didn't want to overproduce consoles and launch and just waited to see how well the console was received before uping production. Which again, after the Gamecube, is perfectly justified.
I agree that the EU colors on the SNES controllers are far to superior to the purple/gray combo we have here in the US. I will say though the different button textures the US has is way better than the 4 standard face buttons in EU...
No idea why they decided to make them this different in these regions all those years ago?
Also, I got mine in this mail this afternoon and they are AMAZING and feel so right when playing the SNES games on Switch
@Lizuka Wii? Amiibo's?
Really?
After less than stellar sales of the Gamecube & before that the N64 wasn't much better the Wii was a much better hit than expected.
The Gamecube lifetime sales was 22 million verses Wii's first quarter alone 101 million units
So the Wii sold 4 times more units in 3 months that what the gamecube did in 6 years.
That's not really scarce at all what so ever.
The numbers alone would tell you that the Wii was a bigger hit than expected & naturally means it would sell out easily.
So long story short the Wii was a bigger hit than expected.
As for the Amiibo's it looks more like miss management with them.
How else would you explain that the same amiibos sell out in some regions & yet still widely available in others.
Take the Splatoon triple pack for example it sold out in north america yet in certain european countries & here in Australia they were widely available for months.
I seen plenty at my local JB Hifi store with plenty of stock for at least 3 months.
As for games, it seems to be more of a push for digital despite figures stating that a lot of people still using DSL internet connection.(40-60% dependin who you believe.)
So really Artificial Scarcity is really nothing more tham mostly a myth.

Not only that, but anyone who’s taken a basic microeconomics 101 course understands the severe costs associated with overproduction, which ties up capital in stock, raw materials, work in progress and finished goods. Another cost has to do with the storage/movement of the inventory- it all requires space, it needs people and equipment to move it around and it needs containers for storage.
All of these are costs to be avoided by companies which, if eliminated, become savings to their bottom line, improving their profit.
@Kawaiipikachu
The Game lifetime sales was 22 million verses Wii's first quarter alone 101 million units. So the Wii sold 4 times more units in 3 months that what the gamecube did in 6 years.
That’s wildly inaccurate. The Wii sold 100 million units over its entire lifespan, which was 6 years, not in 3 months. The Wii sold just under 6 million in its first 3 months.
Your point is well taken, and I agree, but your figures were way, way off.
@JaxonH Yeah there wouldn’t be any reason to create this limited supply for the product. Ultimately this would lead to more losses for the company than gains. I think this myth about Nintendo can be traced back to Christmas of ‘88 when it was near impossible to find the Zelda II and Mario 2 carts for the NES. Some believed it was Nintendo intentionally creating hype around their games, but I think it had to do with shortages of the materials needed to make the circuit boards.
Edit: Changed “artificial demand” to limited supply. Artificial demand in economics means something entirely different.
I want one. When are they going to be back in stock?
It also unlocks hand cramps. I mean, impressive they can keep selling archaic flat controllers at that price point. Power to them.
Just looking at the fingers curled up in the back is painful. Even players at the time realized the Genesis Boomerang was the future.
Sony’s going to sue Nintendo for stealing the design of the PlayStation Control Pad™ as the design is so similar!
/s
@Toy_Link Nintendo should sue Sony for stealing Kamek's symbols for their PlayStation controllers.

Mine came today, build quality seems sturdy. Have a bunch of the 8bitdo pads but it's nice having the real deal
@Agramonte Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but I think the design of the SNES perfectly suits Super Mario World. It’s fine with the 360 style Pro Controller but the SNES buttons are perfectly spaced on to execute the game’s essential “hold run and rock thumb to jump” maneuver. The grips would just get in the way.
Other games or neither here nor there with SNES controller though. Functional but maybe not perfectly comfortable.
I'd be fine with the gray and purple color but I wonder if there's a way to get the red blue yellow green one (probably going to have to order it from Nintendo UK). Idk where I got it from or who got it for me but when I was very little, like 6 or 7, I got a Super Nintendo and it looked like the Super Famicom but with the cartridge slot. Guessing it was maybe the European model because a relative of mine who also had a Super Nintendo had the bigger bulkier model while I had the small one.
Got mine earlier in the week, and I love them! I haven't played any of the SNES games with them yet, bit they work great for shovel knight and octopath. I'm sure the mana series will work well too.
I do wish there was a capture/home button on them though.
When were they ever available in Europe? Store still lists them as not for sale yet.(UK site)
Are they even available yet in uk? I haven’t heard or seen anything.
@Jeaz exactly 🤷♂️
Have the UK ones even become available?? I keep checking
Yeah.... "Sold out in all regions" doesn't quite match with the fact, that they were never available in Europe.
Or did I just miss it? have been checking the UK website every day for when they become available, and now Nintendolife says that they are sold out?!?
Almost gave me a shock there @Liam_Doolan , telling me I missed that train, although the train never arrived here in Europe
@Yosher It's not expensive. Check the list with its features again.
As far as I'm aware these have only been released in the US and Japan, for those asking. I don't think Europe has been offered them yet.
@Yosher
Joy-cons are super expensive. The Pro Controller is expensive.
But 30€ for these SNES controllers are not really that expensive. You will get superior controls in almost all your 2d games on Switch with that d-pad.
Agreed, € 30,00 for these controllers is not that much. Those 8bitdo controller cost more. They do have anologue sticks and 4 true shoulderbuttons, the pro versions that is.
I want my UK release for these!
I was broke and waiting for my actual joy-cons to come back from repair. I’d have been lost without my Splatoon 2 Pro Controller.
Got to laugh at the entitled brats crying that there to expensive. Go and sort your life out and then maybe you can have nice things.
They were sold out before I could get one.
Are these sold out in the UK or something? I cannot for the life of me find where to order them
@Lizuka exactly. finally someone who is smart here. It's all about marketing indeed. Make people think it's indeed limited so they will buy it... people will get it asap when they read stuff like this. You will always have people who wants to be the first one who got an item. And we all know those people.. the one at school who got as first a Nintendo 8bit or Sega 8bit etc etc etc etc. It's all about business. But they can't fool me anymore
Yup, it's neato Frito. Wish there was a home button on the dam thing.
I can’t wait for these to come back in stock. SNES is still my favorite system of all time.
Have they become available on the UK store yet? Or just the US?
@gauthieryannick You can access the 'Home' menu and screen capture from these controllers.
Just as with the NES variant, it's a button-combination of the SL, SR buttons with the START and SELECT buttons.
Passed on these as I already own three 8bitdo controllers that have far superior functionality
@NotTelevision oh yeah, 100% functional. Also, I think first one with shoulder buttons. So it moved things forward, and had its time for sure.
I'm wondering if they've ever been available in the UK also. I've check many times, but no luck.
I'm just patiently waiting on being able to order a couple.
I was interested until I realised it has no proper Home Button. I’m currently using an 8Bitdo GBros Adaptor with a SNES Classic pad. Difficulty is you need a Pro Controller plugged in as Controller 2, press Home on that and change it to Controller 1 to use ZL and ZR and reach the Suspend Menu. But on the plus side it works in everything and has a Home Button on the adaptor itself.
Not perfect, but not £30 worse than the Official solution.
That's a nifty, toy-like feature. Cool. Nintendo hasn't lost their toy-business nature. While I personally would consider it neat, but not necessary, to be able to change the menu sounds from various game themes, or a custom combination of sounds, it is not a deal-breaker for me.
But, cool for those who enjoy these. I'm fine with the joy-cons, and probably a pro-controller, too. Have fun!
@Notshane Sorry, it's a public forum. Everyone is allowed to state their opinion on the matter.
That being said, I also dislike Nintendo's artificial scarcity. It worked to build lots of demand for the classic-mini systems they made recently, and it is a strategy that marketing companies will continue to use on the mass market to build demand.
@bluemage1989 I thought entitled brats have lots of money to spend on things, hence making them feel entitled to lots of things? People who don't have lots of money to spend on extra, superfluous items are now entitled, in your mind? WTF mate? Hahaha...
@Lizuka It's amazing to me how people still don't know how they are being studied and manipulated by marketing firms, with the intent of getting into our wallets. Well stated opinion, just saddle up for all the people who are gonna accuse you of being a "hater," instead of recognizing that not everybody has to agree with Nintendo's marketing and sales tactics, lol.
I'm using the SNES classic controller with the 8bitdo gbros. Works really well.
If Nintendo offered one NES and one SNES controller in a package I would prob bite.
I have checked everyday on the website but it has never been available. The PAL/UK version that is as it is by far the best version. Did I miss the sale? Damn it been on holiday for two weeks, wait looking at your “guide” the UK version hasn’t been released??
COME ON NINTENDO!
@Mr_Muscle No offense, but what's actually amazing, is how people that know very little to nothing of marketing are pretending to know that they do...
As a sales & marketing professional myself, it's painfully clear to me that you, @Lizuka and @Alucard83 haven't really got an inkling of a clue about how marketing actually works, and are seemingly just throwing out some buzzwords that you probably think make you look knowledgeable or edgy.
As some ACTUALLY smart people, such as @JaxonH have already mentioned, tactics like these would only work against them, instead of in their favor. It could potentially run the risk of creating a deadweight loss. You might wanna read up on that, to make you understand how stupid and silly these accusations make people look...
Besides that, the practice of artificial scarcity is actually more fitting and prevalent where it concerns software and/or ideas or concepts, and not really all that often, if ever at all in physical products anymore.
Nintendo may have done it with the Amiibo runs, although that's actually also never been conclusively proven. Either way, they're definitely not doing it with the Switch, and they also weren't doing it with the NES and SNES Classic Editions, that's just a (rather stubborn) myth, also born out of the fact that way too many people misunderstood that these were always going to be limited run products, primarily meant for the holiday season, as JaxonH has also already mentioned.
Here's a couple of articles about this rather touchy topic, from several reliable sources who actually know what they're talking about:

Yep, been in marketing for 18 years, but thanks for the opinion pieces, I’m sure they’ll look great on your resume.
€30 for the controller isn't bad but then it's €17 for delivery, who makes up these prices?
@Mr_Muscle aye exactly. You don't have enough money for something go out and make more rather than complaining everything is to expensive. People seem to think they are entitled to everything for next to nothing regardless of the time, effort and cost that goes in to something. A quality product will always be pricey and i am more than happy to pay that price.
Not convinced that Nintendo are deliberately keeping these things in short supply. I think it’s just a mix of
A) Inability to judge demand
B) They really hate having inventory lying around. Understandably so given what happened to Atari and Sega. I really think that’s the basic principle at work here.
Also funny to see people arguing over whether they’re expensive or not. That’s a subjective thing. Even if someone has the money to buy something doesn’t mean they should if they don’t think it’s a fair price.
Kind of lame they let people buy 4 of these when stock was so limited. Luckily I barely got my order in and snagged one right before it ran out of stock.
I am still waiting for it to arrive though. Supposed to have been here by Sep 25. It is so close, I could drive to the UPS office and pick it up myself. If only. I'm not complaining, though. I understand the flooding is likely slowing them down. Poor Texans. I wish I could just blow all that water away for them.
I actually called the customer service here in Germany and the person said its not limited and will be back in stock soon.
They must have totally underestimated the hype around the SNES, comparing it to their last years NES launch
I got mine today!
For all UK Nintendo Lifers, the SNES Switch controllers are finally up for sale, just ordered mine. Postage is pretty extortionate though at £8.90!
Also delivery could be anywhere between 2nd and 11th October according to their website.
@MasterGraveheart well those were the actual colours everywhere else including Japan, it was just America that got the uglier console and purple colour scheme, for some reason.
@Eddsnake Spinning circle of death here. Been trying for easily 45 minutes.
The woman at customer service literally had no idea what was going on.
'The servers are down, why?'
Almost made me hang up immediately
Doesn't really how much it unlocks since Nintendo is incapable of keeping them in stock.
