@braincandy101 Ha, I remember that game! I mean, as a baseball fan I enjoyed a lot of baseball games growing up, but that one was hilarious. Who needs to challenge close plays when your robots can just beat the crap out of each other to decide if they're safe or out.
I always thought of it as 'Fee' - but ever since my niece told me how it was pronounced in Hyrule Warriors, I've tried to remember to say it the intended way.
@kal3el Huh, interesting. Yeah, it definitely didn't give me the option - or a few others here, it sounds like. I even went into Order Details afterward, and saw the "Make Pickup Changes" and "Ship It Instead" buttons. But still, I couldn't click the latter button - just got the circle-with-line-through-it icon. Weird. Maybe it was only available to earlier buyers or something? Don't know.
Well, was finally able to get the pre-order in at Best Buy. Question: For any others who successfully got the pre-order there, did it offer a shipping option? Because I only got a pick-up option. Still took it and finished checking out fast, but couldn't get it shipped.
Well, unlike most, the original was already my second favorite Zelda game. Seeing all the improvements in this video, I'm definitely looking forward to it! (It also helps that I was able to snag a pre-order from GameStop when it was briefly $10 off. And for any looking to get a similar discount, Walmart generally has all in-store games $10 off once they're released.)
@Nontendo_4DS I fully agree with you about the Wii U gamepad - so incredibly comfortable. As for this this thing, I'm not interested in it as a collectible - only for playing Link's Awakening. So if it seems clear that it just won't be comfortable (which definitely seems to be the case at this point), I'll have to pass.
@Nontendo_4DS Same here. The original black and white version came out when I was 10, and was a big part of my gaming childhood - also became my favorite Zelda. I had always hoped that that original version would become available on the 3DS VC. So hearing that it would be on this Game & Watch singlehandedly made me put my pre-order in.
That being said, I am very concerned about how ridiculously low the buttons are on these things - and the A and B buttons are even lower on this than on the Mario one from last year, presumably to make room for the Start and Select buttons. It just really doesn't look comfortable to hold and play. So I may end up just canceling the pre-order at some point...
@Zidentia
I was thinking the same thinking, regarding the button configuration. Other than nostalgia purposes (I'm assuming the buttons were positioned like that for all past Game & Watch devices?), why on earth are the buttons all the way at the bottom? I've already pre-ordered this - really just because it has the original GB Link's Awakening, which isn't officially available otherwise on any recent consoles - but that button positioning might very well make me decide to cancel it at some point...
Edit: Actually, I was just looking back at photos of the Mario Game & Watch from last year, to compare the button placement. The A and B buttons on the Zelda one are actually a little lower than the ones on the Mario one, seemingly to "make room" for the Start and Select buttons. In reality, those additional buttons could've just gone a little higher so that the A and B buttons could've at least stayed at the same level as the Mario one (still low, but at least not lower). I'd really like to have this for the original GB Link's Awakening, but man, that does not look very comfortable to use. >_<
@SoIDecidedTo Man, I loved Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball. Back in the early/mid 90s, I even went through every team and renamed every player as their real names (using actual stats from the previous year to match up who was who when it wasn't super obvious). As a Yankee fan, I then played multiple full 162 game seasons with them - and even one or two with some other teams. I think it was about 5 or 6 years ago that I went back and did another full season, this time on an emulator. Good times.
I really hope MLB The Show does come to the Switch at some point - been a long time since I had a good, real baseball game on a Nintendo system. The last few were the All-Star Baseball games on the N64, from about '99 to '02 (one each year). Those were my all-time favorite baseball games.
As a baseball fan - as well as fan of baseball video games - I actually remember playing Baseball Simulator 1.000 (though I think it was the NES version, not the "Super" one). It was a really funny game - some of the unnatural abilities were hysterical.
That said, even I can admit what a pathetic group of games that is, yet again. The Switch is now over 4 years old, and they're still just drip-feeding NES and SNES games that are progressively more and more obscure and not wanted by practically anyone. Meanwhile, they have oh so many beloved games on other systems - many of which were already offered on the Wii and Wii U. But still... no sighting.
Yeah, without rumble I couldn't justify paying that much. Too bad, since I'm very disappointed by the Pro Controller's d-pad, like many others - too many unintended directional inputs triggered because it "rolls" too easily between them. I generally stick with my old Wii U pro controller (via the Mayflash adapter) when I play games requiring reliable d-pad inputs, like Mario Maker 2.
I was waiting to see what the sale prices would be, assuming they'd be something like half off - and I was gonna pick them all up if so. Instead I see that some are $8 instead of $10, and S5 is $9 instead of $10. Yeah... I like picross, but that "deal" is gonna be a hard pass for me.
@Nintendo_Thumb Same here. Nintendo was pretty clear in their announcement that they were only removing the ability to upload new levels - existing ones will remain and be playable.
I never knew about this until about a week ago, when I saw it happen while watching a few Twitch streamers playing the game together. Was pretty surprised.
The controls were well for me in the original - and the more immersive controls were actually a big reason why the game became one of my favorite Zelda games (the opposite of most people). But I look forward to them working even better in the HD version.
I'll always look back fondly at those days - getting the N64 and playing Mario 64 for the first time when it came out, when I was 12 or 13. Good times...
Also, just for the sake of clarification: Being able to play other people's existing levels in SMM1 will not be ending - only the ability to upload new levels. The original article linked within this one included this: "Nintendo says that 'it will still be possible to play courses uploaded before the service discontinuation.'" Just FWIW.
Amazing article! Link's Awakening has always been my favorite Zelda since I first played it in 1993 - and, in fact, the original GB version is my favorite as well. I thought the added photo quest in DX was pretty tacky and didn't feel like it properly fit into the game. And yeah, I could've done without the color dungeon, which also added a reward that made you twice as powerful or protected, thus trivializing the original game's well-designed difficulty from that point on. The only thing I did prefer in the DX version was the visual effects of Marin's transformation after the end credits - instead of just floating by in human form, but with fairy wings, it had a picture of her which faded and turned into a seagull, which had been her wish. I thought that was a nice touch and a great decision. But ultimately, the caption under the DX pictures in the article sums up my feelings perfectly: "The Game Boy Color remix gave us DX-style extras, but it arguably robbed the game of some of its purity."
I enjoyed the Switch remake, of course, but yeah, the original GB version will always be the most magical to me. (Throughout all the 3DS years, I had really hoped they would release that version for purchase alongside the DX one. But I knew that was just wishful thinking.)
Very much looking forward to it, but didn't pre-order. Will probably just pick it up at Walmart in store for $10 cheaper, like I did with 3D World + Bowser's Fury.
Very much looking for to this - one of my favorite Zelda games. Already loved the motion controls (I was in the minority), but it'll be all the better with the joy-cons.
@aaronsullivan Same here. I'm one of the rare ones who loved this game largely because of the motion controls. The joy-cons will be a perfect fit for it. But yeah, super glad they included a motion-less option, since the majority really hated that.
And yes, those two changes would be so, SO welcome. Especially the re-explaining of collectibles upon startup. I actually have high hopes for that one, because I think they fixed that with Twilight Princess HD (if I'm remembering correctly). And the Fi one would be really nice too...
Very happy about this announcement. Skyward Sword is my second favorite Zelda - in large part because of the motion sword controls, believe it or not. They worked well for me even on the Wii, and made me feel more immersed in the gameplay, more so than just pressing buttons. The joy-cons seem like a perfect fit for this game, which I'll look forward to using (no cord this time, sweet). But I'm also very glad that they're including a motion-less option. Most people hated the motion controls - and therefore the game itself - so hopefully that option will let more people enjoy the game.
Sorry to hear about your injury - I can certainly sympathize. I seem to have permanently damaged my left thumb about a decade ago (I was 27 at the time), trying too hard to get all the "shiny gold medals" in the time attack mode of Donkey Kong Country Returns. There were two control options for that - just the Wiimote turned on its side, or the Wiimote and nunchuk. Using just the Wiimote and its d-pad would've been a lot better for my thumb, I now see, but I found that shaking the remote to roll when playing that way was a lot less reliable at being recognized by the game than drumming the remote and nunchuk. But using the latter setup meant having to pin the joystick to the right most of the time - and there was a lot of travel in it, which over time hurt my thumb. (Could've been avoided if there was simply a button that would make you roll, like in the later Tropical Freeze; or, you know, if I had realized the damage it was doing at the time, and stopped being obsessed with clearing the challenge in the first place. Not remotely worth it.)
I tried getting the thumb checked out at various points and did some physical therapy - even took a break from gaming as a whole for a long period of time - but it just never seemed to heal. To this day, I use my index and middle fingers in place of my thumb when possible - primarily when playing 2D games that use the d-pad. (I've gotten fairly proficient at it - I recently finished 249th worldwide in the Mario Maker 2 ninji speedrun challenge. Which would've been good enough to win one of those medals if I lived in the U.K. or Japan, which each awarded 100 of them, but not here where there were only 35.) And for 3D games that require a joystick, I actually find the joy-cons to be better for me than the pro controller. There's far less travel in the joy-con's joystick, which is much better for my thumb.
Certainly wish I could go back and undo it, but such is life.
Man, I wish they'd be in the U.S. as well. Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game, and Mario Maker is one of my favorite and most-played games of all time - I'd love to get those two as collectibles. Ah well.
That's odd. On Nintendo of America's Twitter account, they announced (about 18 hours ago) that the top 35 players' times will win that SMM2 coin. I guess that means making it into the top 35 or top 100 in each respective region? If so, I wonder how to even know if you're good enough ahead of time, since the game only shows your worldwide place. Also, it's a bummer that it's not top 100 for America also. I might stand an outside chance, though still unlikely, of trying for the top 100 in the region. But top 35, that's especially far-fetched... Oh well.
Chrono Trigger is my all-time favorite. Beyond that, I love Super Metroid and Illusion of Gaia, in addition to various others - LttP, Secret of Man, SMW, Yoshi's Island, DKC games, etc.
@Not_Soos I seem to be in full agreement with pretty much everything you've said here - and I especially appreciate your respectful attitude, even toward those whose opinions are essentially the opposite of yours (and mine).
At this point, I believe I'm about halfway through Origami King, but left off playing it about 3 or 4 weeks ago. (I will continue it eventually, though.) TBH, I just found myself not caring a whole lot about the story and characters. Hearing my good friend "Bob-omb" speak about an old friend of his, also named "Bob-omb", was... ugh... The battle system is... odd. (I'd kind of like the game to address why it is that Mario now has the supernatural ability to rearrange the positioning of enemies at his whim, and the enemies just kind of go along with it. Seems like an ability that would've been helpful in any of Mario's previous thousand games, lol.)
I definitely miss the earlier games, which felt far more unique and drew me in emotionally - especially SPM and TTYD. I did like Color Splash more than Sticker Star, at least, but it still left no impact on me. And so far, this game seems shockingly similar to the last one (other than the battling, which - although it's nice to not be using immediately disposable stickers or cards - is getting pretty tedious to me). I'm not sure, but this might be the last PM game I buy right from the start. In the future, I'll probably wait and see what the next one looks and feels like before deciding whether to buy it.
I love this game - it's my second-favorite Zelda. I definitely hope it comes to the Switch someday. The joy-cons would take the place of the Wiimote and nunchuk very nicely.
@DragotheKomodo I 100% agree. I absolutely love that game's story - for me, the most unique and memorable of the series, with characters that I actually cared about a lot. TTYD is nearly in a tie with SPM for #1 for me, only because it clearly has the RPG battle style edge that's expected of this series. But story-wise, which for me is the most important RPG element, SPM is #1.
@RPGamer I'm @ing you only to say I'm in agreement on that, as my previous words in this comment testify. In fact, I might even agree with your entire list. (Have only played through the first two streamers in Origami King so far, so can't fully speak to that one yet.)

Re: Win Mario, Smash And Splatoon Medals By Competing In These In-Game Events (Europe)
TBH, I just found myself not caring a whole lot about the story and characters.

In other words, the Switch Pro is coming - perhaps, some Egyptians believe.
Re: Rumour: Is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Taking To The Skies On Nintendo Switch?
I love this game - it's my second-favorite Zelda. I definitely hope it comes to the Switch someday. The joy-cons would take the place of the Wiimote and nunchuk very nicely.
Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You
@DragotheKomodo
I 100% agree.
@RPGamer
I'm @ing you only to say I'm in agreement on that, as my previous words in this comment testify. In fact, I might even agree with your entire list. (Have only played through the first two streamers in Origami King so far, so can't fully speak to that one yet.)
Re: Paper Mario Producer Says "It's A Necessity" To Change The Combat System In Every Entry
Counterpoint: No, it isn't.
