Re: Random: Zelda Fan Spends 484 Hours Completing Every Game In The Series To 100%

Rocky2418

I actually clicked on this article because I was curious if he did the Cuccomaster challenge in LBW - the most unreasonable challenge I've personally ever seen in a mainstream Zelda game. (The only one I was unable to do, or even come close to - it was even hurting my thumb.) I was surprised to see it actually mentioned in the article, lol. All I can say is, that's more than understandable.

Doing all those games to 100% is quite an amazing endeavor and accomplishment!

Re: Guide: Nintendo E3 2018 Press Conference Schedule, Rumours, Hopes, And Dreams

Rocky2418

I'm one of the few who loved the controls (particularly with regard to the sword) in Skyward Sword. And it seems like the joy-cons would work very nicely for it - better than the original, because no cord between the two controllers.
That said, I certainly understand the distaste for the controls by the majority, so it would be nice if they could find a way to include an option for standard controls. How this could be integrated into the game, of course, I don't really know.

Re: A Cheaper, Customisable 'Nintendo Switch 2nd Set' Has Launched In Japan Without A Dock

Rocky2418

@Anti-Matter
As usual, I echo your sentiments in this matter. I see the picture showing seven different color options for joy-cons, but not white. And, as you said, no alternative colors for the Switch itself. I'd always thought that white sold better in Japan, so I'm particularly disappointed when it comes to the Switch - because, since it's not region-locked, I would actually be able to import one from Japan if they actually released it in white there. So wouldn't you know it, nothing yet in this generation - anywhere. Ugh...
But hey, I can wait and hope. I've done it before.

Re: Nintendo Applies For New N64 Trademark - Is Another Classic Edition On The Way?

Rocky2418

@ZeoVGM

Funny, I was going to post the same thing - I just saw a bunch of the SNES minis at a Target two days ago. So I assumed demand had been met. I still didn't have any interest in getting one, though. For one thing, it doesn't have my all-time favorite game, Chrono Trigger. And for another, I don't particularly care about many of the games on it, and I prefer to just buy individual games that I do want on the eshop. But I certainly hope they manage to keep up with demand for these things in the future, so that the people who do want them can get them without too much trouble.

Re: Video: Fake Nintendo E3 2018 "Leaks" are Fun to Read

Rocky2418

Ah, if only they did make a 3DS remake of Link's Awakening - my favorite Zelda game...

Also, hilarious video, loved it!

@BrandyBongos

I'd love SS on the Switch too. I actually loved the motion controls (at least for the sword), but even I see that it was a poor choice not to include a standard control option. Alienated too many Zelda fans.

Re: Soapbox: Let's Give Nintendo Switch Online A Chance Before We Throw It To The Wolves

Rocky2418

@superguy123

That's exactly what I was going to say. How can you compare Nintendo's cloud storage thing with Sony's and Microsoft's? You can backup save data at least in some way for free on both their systems. (Unless I'm missing something. Feel free to correct me if I am.) Paying for cloud storage would be a complete non-issue for most if Nintendo let players backup their save data to an external drive or SD card.

Re: Feature: The 26 Best Nintendo Game Boy Games Of All Time

Rocky2418

Link's Awakening is most definitely my number one GB game. Wario Land and Donkey Kong '94 are two others of my favorites. One game not on that list that I have fond memories of is TMNT 3: Radical Rescue. I have those first 3 games on my 3DS via Virtual Console, but unfortunately TMNT 3 was never made available that way...

Re: Random: As The Pokémon Anime Hits 1000 Episodes, One Thing Is Clear: Ash Sucks At Pokémon

Rocky2418

Pretty late to this article, but nevertheless...

@Findonovan95

I completely agree. Yes, Ash wants to be a "pokemon master." But being a kind and caring trainer is far more important to him, when it comes down to it. He would rather have a smaller group of pokemon that he can actually form a bond with than a massive amount caught and shipped off to Oak's lab to collect dust. Yes, he wants to win each pokemon league. But he also understands that there things more important than that, and losing isn't the end of the world.

@BakaKnight

Exactly. When people play the games, all they generally care about is catching every pokemon and winning. Those are not the be-all and end-all for Ash. He actually cares about each individual pokemon. For him, his success in terms of winning battles comes after that in terms of importance.

@UmbreonsPapa

I actually feel the same way as you, when you said you wish that battles in the games were more flexible like they are in the series. That's one of the reasons that I eventually lost interest in the games - the simple alternating of turns back and forth (using moves that would have a predictable result) was less interesting to me. I like the more dynamic nature of them on the show.

Also, to those who said that it's pathetic that Ash hasn't won the league championship in 6 attempts: Considering the fact that there seem to be about 100 people in each one, if it were real life it would be far LESS likely that any one specific person would win even one. So it's actually kind of realistic. That said, I'll admit I was disappointed when he came SO close to winning in Kalos. After 19 seasons, I felt having him win it was warranted. But oh well. I still enjoy the show, for the most part - even though I'm well-aware of its flaws.

As for a favorite episode, one somewhat random one that always stuck with me was from season one, called "The Pi-kahuna." Just really liked it, and I miss that victory music on the show that played when the guy was surfing the huge wave near the end. (Which is also the music that plays inside of pokemon gyms in the games, I believe. But the version on the show back then, and in that episode, was always epic.)

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

Rocky2418

I fully agree with the article. By now, My Nintendo has become an utter joke to me. I don't even bother checking the site for many months at a time (until some random thing reminds me that it even exists), because it simply never holds any value to me when I do occasionally check back with it.

Conversely, when Club Nintendo was around, I would visit the site all the time and enjoy the various rewards. It wasn't mind-blowing, but compared to My Nintendo? ... Well, then yes, it was mind-blowing. -_-

Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild Gets Stunning 5-Disc Soundtrack Release

Rocky2418

Like many others here, I had to enter this thread solely because I couldn't fathom how this game could have a 5-disc soundtrack. I actually think the mostly-ambient sounds / lack of much actual music served this game well. Each area is so ridiculously huge that if you had to listen to 3 minutes of music repeating over and over and over, it would get tiresome. So I actually don't mind that too much. However, that also means I'm baffled as to how there could be 5 discs of "music" - that is, something enjoyable to listen to by itself, without the game. (It could serve as music to fall asleep to, sure, but... surely one disc would suffice for that? lol)

Re: Soapbox: What Happened To All The Great Baseball Games On Nintendo Consoles?

Rocky2418

I loved Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB growing up. Since they gave all the players different names, but kept in all the official stats from the previous year ('92?) and allowed the player to rename the players too, I remember painstakingly going through the entire MLB roster, matching up players with stats and giving them their real names. I would then play full 162 game seasons with the Yankees. Man, those were some good times...

My absolute favorite baseball games, though, were the All-Star Baseball games on the N64. The last installment I had, ASB 2001, was my all-time favorite. (I really wish that - or at least one of the ASB games - had been released on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console.)

Re: Check Out All These New Discounts on My Nintendo in North America

Rocky2418

@UmbreonsPapa
First off, I coincidentally used that same discount on Skyward Sword a while back, selling my physical copy.

Yeah, Lost is my all-time favorite show, and John Locke is hands down my favorite character. (I'm guessing you know at what point in his life that picture comes from, and I'm glad it evokes that response from you.) I can sympathize greatly with his struggle on the show - believing, even knowing, that something critically important is true, but not having a single person believe you until it's too late (at least, too late for you).

In case you're interested, I actually made an automatic music level of Locke's theme in Super Mario Maker. I furiously worked hard to get it finished before Miiverse ended, because I wanted to use in-level comments to include the perfect heart-wrenching narration quotes to go along with the music, so that I could at least record it for YouTube before they disappeared. Additionally, about a year before that, I finished a monstrous two-part music level (took me about 150 hours in total) of the show's concluding 8-minute "Moving On" theme - also with narration. If you'd like the links to those to see / listen to, just let me know. (Assuming it's okay to post YouTube links here? If not, my YouTube name is the same as mine here, so you can probably find it without much trouble.) Always great to meet a fellow Lostie!

Re: Check Out All These New Discounts on My Nintendo in North America

Rocky2418

@Devlind "of course, Nintendo would know which games you have so it can only offer games you don't"

Indeed. Instead, here are 11 of the things currently being offered (most just at a discount): Mario Kart 7, SMB3, Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure, Mighty Switch Force!, Mario Kart 8 DLC 1, and DLC 2.

I name those because I already own all of them (all digitally, in fact). They say "You can get this!" on the page. Shouldn't "You can also use this!" be implied? Because I wouldn't be able to use any of them even if I tried. I don't exactly feel the personal touch that should be implied My Nintendo.

And of course, that's just one pathetic aspect of the site. To me, it's been utter garbage. I'd almost prefer no program at all to this. I know that sounds weird, because something is technically better than nothing. But going to the site every time there are new "rewards" only to be disappointed every single time is in many ways worse than just buying games and enjoying them, not expecting more. It's for that reason that I'll often forget the site even exists for 3 or 4 months at a time - which is why, when I just now went to the site, I learned that 80 of my formerly 180 gold coins expired a month ago. (And I don't even feel bad about it. I had nothing to spend them on anyway.)

tl;dr
I miss Club Nintendo...

Re: Aonuma Wants to Keep Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Freedom in Future Games

Rocky2418

@LuckyLand
Well said! I 100% agree, and I too feel that Zelda games are better with less freedom that BotW had. Games that are all about "go wherever and do whatever you want" have their place, but that's not what the Zelda series has been about. For me, personally, this game felt the least like Zelda of pretty much all the Zelda games. And being a huge Zelda fan, therefore, I understandably didn't enjoy it nearly as much. But most people did, so it's no great surprise that they're going to continue with this approach going forward. Unfortunate for me, but great news for almost everyone else.

Re: Feature: Memorable Games of 2017 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Rocky2418

@Prof_Yoshtonics
I have very similar feelings as you toward the game. Most of all when you said that one of the things you need are "reasons to care about playing the game." That hits the nail on the head, for me. After seeing a lot of the same types of stuff for 10, 20, 30, etc. hours, with extremely minimal focus on the whole point of the adventure (in terms of time spent on it by comparison), I simply had no vested interest anymore. To me, the game was saying: "Go out and spend lots and lots of time exploring and doing whatever. (And every once in a while, maybe do a little something contributes to the saving of Hyrule... Maybe... If you want...)"

That being said, as I said previously, a heck of a lot of people clearly love that sort of game - which I have no problem with. I mean, it's a video game. If another person loves a game that I don't like very much, why should that bother me? I never understand the animosity that so frequently pops up over something as trivial as individual likes and dislikes. In this case, the game was widely adored, so I and some others are merely in the minority. Not a big deal.

Re: Feature: Memorable Games of 2017 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Rocky2418

@KirbyTheVampire @Fingeldor
Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. Oftentimes whenever I express my personal displeasure on gaming forums, I get slayed. I agree with everything you said. And I'll add one more thing: Zelda games are in the adventure genre. And a big part of the adventure, for me, is the game keeping a reasonable focus on the purpose of the adventure - a.k.a. the main story. As I explored and tried to get the full experience of everything in the game, it felt like over 90% of the time was spent just doing random things unrelated to the storyline - like shrines, endless climbing, and farming for materials (and just exploring in general). And that's not an exaggeration, based on the amount of time I put into the game compared to the amount of time spent on dungeons and the limited events leading up to them. To me, I was just doing things for the sake of doing things - not because they had a relevance to the main purpose of the adventure, as was the case with previous Zelda games. (And I've played them all.) So based on what I considered to be a key part of the series' essence - the engrossing story, and a reasonable amount of focus on it - I most definitely disagree with the article when it said: "Breath of the Wild retains the essence of the series."

@Ralizah
It's funny that you should compare it to Minecraft. My niece plays Minecraft all the time, and while playing BotW, she constantly pointed out things that were identical to Minecraft in it, often joking that BotW stole this and that from the game. We eventually started calling it Zelda: Minecraft Edition, lol.

Oh, and I wanted to mention one last thing, with regard to Link's inhuman climbing ability in the game. As I watched my brother easily scale a cliff that was made of sheer ice and so steep that it sometimes sloped backward, I found myself wishing that the game had explained that ability in some way - maybe having it be something gained from an early shrine, like Magnesis or Stasis were. Because as it stands, doesn't this kind of shatter with complete triviality all the climbing limitations (like only being able to climb where there were vines, for instance) Link has had in previous games? To me, it would be like if, in Mario Odyssey, Mario had been able to jump and then jump again in mid-air to traverse obstacles - only without Cappy, so without any explanation as to how Mario could magically now do this.

Anyway, this is apparently the game that almost everyone wanted, so Nintendo was very smart to make it like this. It's just not for me. Since it didn't really feel like a Zelda game to me, it's understandably far down on my list of favorite Zeldas.

Re: Here’s Why Traditional Dungeons Got Axed in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Rocky2418

I wasn't a fan of the new layout. Between that and the more traditional format, I 100% prefer the latter. That said, it's not like I need it to be identical or anything. Just closer to the traditional way.

I also agree with the posts that said that the shrines felt very repetitive after a while. They all sort of "felt" identical in nature, even if the puzzles themselves may have differed. And while the interior shrine music was kind of cool and mystical, after hearing it for 10 minute stretches over 100 times... holy crap did it become tiresome to me.

Re: This Is The Most Touching Miiverse Tribute Of Them All

Rocky2418

@MaSSiVeRiCaN
I shared the link to my music level playlist in the Super Mario Maker thread, at the request of someone else who asked for it here. Since I'm not sure if the site would prefer that I didn't share that link here, I'll just post the link to the comment in that other thread. You can click on the link to the playlist from there: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/mario_maker_rumor?start=5180#comment4210366

Re: This Is The Most Touching Miiverse Tribute Of Them All

Rocky2418

I'm pretty disappointed it's gone too. I primarily used it for Super Mario Maker. I create music levels - mostly for games like Chrono Trigger, sometimes for TV shows like Lost - and I used in-level comments to provide narration that accompanied the music. With Miiverse now gone, the levels look so barren to me... I was able to at least record all the ones up to this point for YouTube while the comments were there, but I'll definitely miss the service, no doubt.

Re: Nintendo Outlines Black Friday Deals, With A "Link Green" Zelda 2DS Leading The Charge

Rocky2418

@Anti-Matter
As you know from in the past, you're not alone - I'm right there with you. It's my preferred gaming system color too. I've got a white standard size New 3DS (with the white Super Mario cover plates) and white 32GB Wii U (purchased when it was briefly available on Nintendo's online store in the U.S.).

Yeah, if they released the Switch in white, I'd snatch one up right away. But I still have plenty of other stuff to play, so I'm in no rush to get one if it doesn't happen anytime soon.

Re: The Plug Will Finally Be Pulled On Miiverse In November

Rocky2418

As I posted in the editorial article (didn't see this one at the time), this is definitely disappointing news to me. For Mario Maker, I use Miiverse extensively to leave in-level comments on my own music levels that provide narration/quotes which accompany the music. Obviously the service was going to end at some point, but it's a letdown that it had to happen so soon.

Re: Editorial: Farewell to the Flawed Miiverse, But Thanks for the Memories

Rocky2418

@shredmeister
Hey, VinnieMii! Many of your comments on my music levels were some of the ones I most appreciated - in fact, I believe I included some of them at the ends of the recorded versions I uploaded to YouTube.

Anyway, I appreciate that, and I know the music levels are still fine on their own. But oftentimes a big part of the reason why I choose the pieces I do is for the emotional connection I feel to them, which is largely due to the story/narration that's tied to them. So without that it's just missing an important element, to me.

I'm not upset with Nintendo or anything; they own the service, and I'm sure they had good reasons, like server costs and whatnot. But still, yeah, it's just disappointing.

Re: Editorial: In Praise of the Smaller New Nintendo 3DS - The Best 3DS*

Rocky2418

I pre-ordered the white, standard size New 3DS the moment it finally was announced for North America. The only option was as a part of the Animal Crossing bundle - which both made the purchase way more expensive and was something I had no interest in - but it was worth it anyway. I've loved the system. I don't have small hands, but it's still always felt comfortable to me.

My only complaint with it (and it's just a small one) is that the various cover plates I've used don't quite seem to ever be completely flush with the system - don't conform quite as perfectly as the built-in covers on other 3DS models. And so pretty frequently I'll feel the back cover sort of press in when I grip the system a bit more while playing. I had both an original 3DS and an original XL prior to this system, and never felt any such thing. Anyway, it's annoying, but nothing huge. Other than that it's the perfect handheld system for me.

Re: Nintendo Apologizes for Switch Shortages, Promises an Increase in Production

Rocky2418

@Anti-Matter
I actually prefer white for my gaming systems too. I managed to get the white Wii U Deluxe when it finally became available (refurbished) on NOA's website back in September 2015 (coinciding with Mario Maker's release, which worked out nicely). I also waited for the standard size, white New 3DS to come here. I'm in no rush to buy a Switch, and Mario Maker still keeps me busy, but if they sell one in white here, I'll definitely jump on that.

Oh, and coincidentally, I'm a 33-year-old male gamer as well.
