The glory years for me would be the '93-'95 time span - '95 having my all-time favorite game (Chrono Trigger), and '93 having my favorite Zelda (Link's Awakening). So I split the difference and picked '94 - which also had Super Metroid, an absolute masterpiece (coming from someone who otherwise isn't really a Netflix fan).
No big surprise that the year of the Switch and BotW dominated the poll, though - could've predicted that.
Wow. What an utterly ridiculous and baffling thing to find out. And although I already knew that this new game would contain more of both the bland and out-of-place things that the last couple games had, it's still disappointing to hear - especially since the new game will be arriving tomorrow for me. (I'll still enjoy a lot of it, of course - no doubt. But I like many others will always long for the kind of fascinating characters and stories found in the older games, like TTYD and SPM, my favorites in the series.)
20 out of 21 for me - only got number 18 wrong. Seemed to be exactly the same kind of art style as the Minish Cap one a few before it (shield even seemed to have the same design), and I wasn't sure if they'd be sneaky and use the same game for two answers. Only later did I look back and see that they did say "from 21 games", meaning they would definitely all be different. If I'd realized that, Wind Waker would've been the obvious choice. Oh well.
Several years ago, I actually played through this thoroughly (trying to bomb every wall, for instance) and created my own maps using some spreadsheets - so that I could just use them on any subsequent playthroughs. I did so with both quests in Zelda 1 and also with Zelda 2.
Even so, I'll definitely pick up at least the pdf version of this. (I'd love the physical version, but I don't know how much that will cost and I imagine 100 copies will sell out fast.) It just looks amazing, and has all the charm that my maps do not.
@nessisonett I feel exactly the same. From the moment they added real-life "Things" in Sticker Star (and again in Color Splash), I cringed. It's just so goofy and gimmicky and breaks the 4th wall way too heavily. I'm not in love with the idea of things like that being actual bosses. I'm sure it'll be "clever" in their execution, but still just out of place.
That said, it otherwise does look like this game is at least a step in the right direction. I'll likely get it. Hopefully someday they can get back closer to the formula that once made these games so great.
@Sandro89 Lol, the way you worded your comment couldn't help but remind me of this Lucille Bluth quote from Arrested Development: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e_blmI066M
But anyway, I'm in the same boat as you and many others here - never heard of a single one of them.
@Anti-Matter Well, now that they've got clothing that requires a 1,000 clear streak for both Easy and Normal Endless runs, that'll take a sizable chunk out of the 10,000 courses cleared.
Of course, all that really means is that the new 1,000 required streak in Easy and Normal is beyond ridiculous. That's not challenging, it's just insanely tedious. The previous high needed to unlock everything was a 100 streak - and even that felt like it took forever. Ugh...
Skyward Sword, please! It would be absolutely perfect for the two joy-cons, control-wise. And it would be nice not to have that Wiimote to nunchuk cable getting in the way of the motion controls.
I mean... I mean, wow. For Nintendo - and their usual drip rate of "legacy content" being released - this is simply mind-blowing. I'll be eagerly awaiting more news and details on this.
@UmbrageHill At least you can take comfort in knowing you're not alone. Those are the two I remember having way back in the day - and they are long, long gone by now...
Huh, that sounded surprisingly more definitive than usual - particularly the wording "please note that..." Like he was going out of his way to inform people. Of course, just because they have no plans now doesn't mean they won't tomorrow. But yeah, sounds somewhat more definitive in this instance, IMO.
Well, that was an instant order for me. (Though I just pre-ordered it with Amazon Prime. For me, the bonus poster included when purchased at Shout Factory's site definitely wasn't worth the $7 extra for shipping. That's a bit excessive.) This has always been a favorite movie of mine, since I was a kid. And although it's riddled with Nintendo advertisements, and some parts are certainly cheesy, even as an adult I honestly think it's a quality story that's legitimately touching. (But yeah, 30 year anniversary? I too feel old...)
"Only click here if you don't mind being spoiled."
...A somewhat silly spoiler warning, after this site announced the result in the large font letters of an actual article title on the main page a while back (which did very much spoil it for me...).
I'll definitely be getting that. I watched it a lot as a kid, and nowadays it's my go-to movie when I'm sick. Despite the criticism it receives (and I'll admit that it obviously has loads of Nintendo advertising), I actually always thought the movie's story was good.
@Yosher Exactly. I and another person here already commiserated about having it spoiled. And what makes it more egregious is that unless you want to watch it in Japanese (which I never have), this episode won't even AIR in English until January of next year, not to mention the 20 or so episodes leading up to it between now and then.
Given that and the fact that this doesn't even qualify as actual "Nintendo news" anyway, it was very uncool to post this article here at all (and use the large-font article title itself to spoil it, not even giving those of us who care a chance to avoid it). TBH, I'm now starting to look for other Nintendo news sites as possible alternatives.
@SwitchLife Exactly how I feel... I mean, anything regarding the Pokemon TV show would already be kind of a stretch as "news" on a Nintendo video game news site. So I don't know, maybe something about it that's a massive spoiler could just be left off this site entirely, considering the fact that it won't even air in English for a few months. But at the very least, maybe find a way to not spoil it within the large-font topic name itself. >_< Unfortunate.
I clicked on this article solely to make sure it wasn't a joke. Two and a half years into the Switch's life, NES is still the only "legacy content" being offered, and these are the two games being featured for an entire month.
@Heavyarms55 Thanks. Yeah, I actually just found one on Amazon made by Basstop, which has the d-pad option like the one you mentioned. Looks pretty cool, definitely will consider that instead. (Who knows, maybe I could order just the Switch front skin from dbrand to match the rest. Maybe wouldn't work, but possibly.)
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, I've looked at some of those in the past. One holdup I'd had was that they didn't cover the border on the front of the Switch (for those that at least included the back cover for it). So I've more considered that dbrand set of skins instead.
Still, the inclusion of a d-pad sounds pretty nice. Could you let me know where you got yours, so I can take a look? (Or maybe links aren't allowed in posts here - I can't remember.)
Actually, that Goron Ruby at the end of Dodongo's Cavern was meant to be red. However, if you look at the 17:00 mark in the video, you happened to go through the key door right on the frame when the block under you disappeared - at which point all switches turned from red to blue, which wasn't supposed to happen and you still be able to go through. Funny.
"A big issue with Super Mario Maker was the fact that someone could find a course, download it, change a block or two to make it ‘unique’, and then re-upload it with almost no effort at all"
Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure that SMM1 didn't let you do that. You couldn't re-upload someone else's level after downloading it, even after making changes, to drastically limit plagiarizing. You had to re-create from scratch, block by block. (I had this happen once to my most popular level. Even still, the copycat was deleted by Nintendo for obvious plagiarism after getting reported.)
"you’ll just have to try and work out what they did or where that Hidden Block is hiding through your own wits and observations"
Or, in most cases, random jumping around, with absolutely no hints existing whatsoever. I sort of get Nintendo's reason for this decision, though because of my first thought above, I'm not sure that was necessary, and it'll just encourage dev items and exits even more...
@Ooccoo_Jr "Does anyone reading this website really not currently own a Switch because they are waiting for a Mini?"
Actually, that's pretty much the case with me, so yes. But more specifically, I've held off getting a Switch largely because Mario Maker 1 has kept me so busy all by itself, for years, so I've had no need. Now that Mario Maker 2 is coming, I of course plan to get a Switch in the near future. But with such extensive rumors from so many reputable sources, I'm now waiting to see just what the new SKU(s) might look like / feature before forking over lots of money. For instance, ideally I'd like a white Switch of some sort. So in addition to seeing what features a new model might have or not have, that would be a nice bonus for me if that ended up being an option.
@Rob3008 Yes, thank you - that's what I've said to people many times in the past.
@rjejr That's a great point you made - that if you get a mini, you'll essentially already have a Pro controller and might just need to buy a separate set of joy-cons for games they would be useful for; and that it's merely the opposite for owners of the original system. Makes sense to me.
I just hope the mini at least is TV compatible, by some means. That's one of the biggest determining factors in whether I get one (whenever it inevitably gets announced). I've held off getting a Switch this long (though SMM2 will have to force my hand soon), so I'd like to at least wait and see how this new option might compare. I'd prefer to wait for whatever Pro version might come, but based on the numerous rumors it sounds like whatever that ends up being might not come around for significantly longer.
Though I'm not a fan of the smooth, plastic look of this remake (I think a softer look would be more fitting for the dreamy setting), Link's Awakening is my all-time favorite Zelda game, so I very much look forward to this.
I'm quite excited to hear about these two new models (or even one, for that matter) from Nintendo itself soon. There have been more than enough reputable sources reporting on this for it not to be true, IMO. I actually don't have a Switch yet, but with SMM2 just a couple weeks away, I'll definitely be getting one sometime this year. Just holding off for now, to see what the new options will look like.
This is one talking point I completely agree with. It's quite baffling that they couldn't come up with a simple way to let us play with friends, what with the Switch friend codes existing and whatnot. As the article said, just exclude such play from any leaderboards.
As things currently stand, I obviously won't be able to play co-op with family members that live across the country - also the only people I know that I could've done so with. Not the end of the world, as I wasn't expecting any SMM2 multiplayer originally anyway. But the Direct certainly got my hopes up regarding it, only to inexplicably crash them back down. Classic Nintendo!
@MrBlacky Sigh... Obviously that was neither what I said or insinuated, but whatever you'd like to think, I suppose.
I guess what's strange is that you care enough to argue with so many people, considering the fact that it's a matter that you "don't give a damn about" - as you originally said. This missing feature affects many of us because the Direct originally gave us the impression that we'd be able to play an indefinite amount of levels with friends and family that we otherwise can't play such levels with. This news was at least a little disappointing, so we left a comment about it. It sounds like the news doesn't affect you at all, so why comment so much about it? I personally only care about 10% of the articles on this site, at most - the rest I don't even click on. And of those, I probably only care enough about 10% of them to comment on them. If it doesn't affect me, it's counter-productive for me to voice an opinion or start up arguments. The only reason I can see to do so is to stir up contention for sport. If that's the case here, well done, I guess.
Nevertheless, I'll gladly let you have the last word. No hard feelings.
@MrBlacky No, it's hardly the worst thing ever - nor did I say it was. (To the contrary, I said the game was still a must have for me.) But it also doesn't seem like a super complicated thing for Nintendo to include - and is also just common sense in this day and age, assuming you are including online play in the first place, like this game is. That's really all that most of us are saying. Not a big dramatic deal.
Yeah, this is very disappointing. Someone on a gaming forum already pointed out to me that this seemed to be the case soon after the Direct came out, based on the few moments shown in the Direct pertaining to this. I had originally been excited that I'd be able to play levels co-op with my brother and niece, who live across the country - literally the only people I know who would have and play the game. SMM2 is still a must buy for me, no question. But I sure hope they change this at some point. Seems remarkably stupid as it currently stands.
@MrBlacky I live in New York and my brother lives in Idaho. Shall I travel 2500 miles to play a few SMM2 levels together? >_< Not everyone lives in close proximity to their friends and family. (And as for not being able to talk to the people while you play, there are countless ways to do that in this day and age. We do so frequently.)

But it also doesn't seem like a super complicated thing for Nintendo to include - and is also just common sense in this day and age, assuming you are including online play in the first place, like this game is. That's really all that most of us are saying. Not a big dramatic deal.
Re: It Seems You Can't Play Against Friends Online In Super Mario Maker 2
Yeah, this is very disappointing. Someone on a gaming forum already pointed out to me that this seemed to be the case soon after the Direct came out, based on the few moments shown in the Direct pertaining to this. I had originally been excited that I'd be able to play levels co-op with my brother and niece, who live across the country - literally the only people I know who would have and play the game. SMM2 is still a must buy for me, no question. But I sure hope they change this at some point. Seems remarkably stupid as it currently stands.

I live in New York and my brother lives in Idaho. Shall I travel 2500 miles to play a few SMM2 levels together? >_< Not everyone lives in close proximity to their friends and family. (And as for not being able to talk to the people while you play, there are countless ways to do that in this day and age. We do so frequently.)
