Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.0.0 Is Now Live

Razzy

I was going to snark about the Switch finally catching up to 2009's PSP Go, but that would actually be a lie, using the same headphones my Switch (handheld mode) has worse latency than my old PSP Go. That's some kind of special achievement.

Re: Nintendo Switch Cheat Device Speeds Up Pokémon Shiny Hunting, And It's Proving To Be Controversial

Razzy

Holy cr*p, I had no idea my cheap gaming keyboard and logitech mouse are modding devices and that I cheat every time I use a macro! Why did nobody tell me?!

/s, if anyone doubts it.

Seriously, shortening tedious and senseless grind in badly-designed games is cheating now? Especially if it's to obtain what's basically a skin? The hell?

I'd understand if it was an aimbot or something, basically anything that gives you an unfair advantage against other players, but all it does is allow you to read a book or something instead of holding a controller like a zombie for hours at a time.

I guess leaving the console running with SR3 or 4 and then drawing on the accrued hourly cash is cheating too.

Re: Just 10 Days Since Launch, Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Is Already Amazon's Third Best-Seller Of 2021

Razzy

Still not getting it for this price.

@ShadowofTwilight22 For a full price? Yes.

Compare and contrast Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition with a new engine, massively improved textures, new character models, redone soundtrack, QoL improvements, entire large new area, quests and story post-game.

All for the same msrp as this and, unlike this and other first-party games, it actually drops in price over time.

That's not even going into the quality of the original games.

Re: Valve's Steam Deck Hopes To Avoid Switch's Joy-Con Drift Issues

Razzy

@Ghost_of_Hasashi What?

Of course they're still covered by warranty for hardware defects. If I buy a laptop, where I can install anything, they still have to replace the battery if it leaks or the cpu of it fries itself. They have to prove that it was my fault if they want to avoid it.

As for the Nintendo Drift, switch is the only console i ever owned that had this problem, and every single joycon I have exhibited it. On the other hand, I positively tortured my Vita's sticks during exceedingly long sessions of Freedom Wars and other games and they still work perfectly.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

Razzy

Why are so many people repeating 'R&D', 'tooling', 'production setup', 'taxes', 'shipping', etc., as if the original Switch's price didn't also include those?

The Switch didn't get any price cuts yet, so it means we're still paying for all this for the original too. Why should we pay these costs for the new display AND the old one if we're getting only the new display? Or did R&D for the new components somehow cost significantly more than for the old ones?

I imagine R&D for the new case would actually be lower, since the new screen is thinner and requires less creativity in cramming all the internal components in place.

So yeah, if we're paying all these costs of new components instead of the costs associated with the old components, and the new components are just $10 more, where's the other $40 coming from?

Re: Review: Ys IX: Monstrum Nox - A Fine Action-RPG With Performance Issues On Switch

Razzy

Having played all the Ys games up to celcetta on my PSP and Vita, and VIII on my Switch, this game is the worst-performing of them all.

Dungeons and smaller locations are fine, the city is also fine at certain angles, but any long-distance view of the city tanks the fps hard. I haven't gotten very far due to lack of time, but the fields before the first dungeon are particularly egregious, when the camera points towards the greatest city there, the fps feels around 10.

Mind you, Ys games on handhelds were never great performers, I think every single 3d Ys game on handhelds chugs each time there's a large attack involving transparency effects, this one is no exception, using those attacks and the super mode attack causes the framerate to hitch.

Still, the game's fun so far and the special powers make traversing the city a joy, I think even better than botw climbing.

I just hope they fix the performance at least a bit. I simply think Falcom's extremely green at making open world games, they clearly ***** something up with the lod and occlusion settings, i mean, Vice City Stories on the PSP and Gravity Rush on the Vita managed to have open worlds with long-distance views and decent performance just fine.

Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

Razzy

Eh, the camera perspective doesn't automatically change the price. What matters more is the quality, gameplay, design, length.

That said, for 2D games in much, much more inclined to pay more for games with a unique and beautiful art style, particularly with amazing, hand-drawn animation. Odin Sphere, for example, would've been worth it for $60. Both Ori games too.

This game's art style really isn't doing anything for me, so I'll wait for a sale.

That's just my personal opinion, so maybe the usual big N defence squad and peanut gallery could refrain from labeling it as whining while whining about someone daring to have a different opinion than them.

Re: Soapbox: An Ode To The 3DS, Nintendo's Workhorse Console

Razzy

A solid handheld, but not the greatest one for me. That honours still go to the PSP and Vita (but only a hacked one) in my opinion.

After having a gbc and a gba (this one for only a few months before it got stolen) years ago, I bought a 3ds XL around the time of pokemon x and y to play y, ended up getting As later, as well as the Phoenix Wright games (playing those first time ever), but it had always been overshadowed by my PSP and Vita, with me getting the Vita before the 3ds. The game selection, aside of pokemon, simply resonated with me better.

Ended up getting a zelda MM n3ds just to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, later got Pokemon Moon and Ultra Sun, MH4U (just to discover that after Freedom Wars I simply couldn't stand the original MH formula), all three Zelda games, a few lesser games, Re:R, but, in the end, my 3ds library ended up really poor compared to my PSP and Vita libraries. Still, had fun with the system and still go back to it from time to time.

Just wish the c-stick was at least 1/10th as good as the Vita analogues.

PS. Both Zero Escape games available on 3ds were released on it and the Vita at the same time, so, indeed, the 3ds was NOT the only place such a game could be released.

Re: Random: Grand Theft Auto 3 Is Up And Running On The Switch, It's Just Not Official

Razzy

I'm not surprised there are no official GTA games on Nintendo's home consoles. After all, back during N64 times, Nintendo, wanting to boost N64 sales in Japan and thinking they were low because of the lack of RPGs, pretty much forced DMA Design (future Rockstar North) to rewrite their almost finished GTA3 before GTA3 (Body Harvest) into an RPG, then effed that up royally due to piss-poor communications, later even NOJ and NOA giving them conflicting orders, before finally blaming it all on DMA and cancelling the game, bankrupting DMA and forcing them to sell the company to Gremlin.

I know I wouldn't want to have anything to do with Nintendo after that.

Re: Hail To The King, Baby - Duke Nukem 3D Is Coming To Switch This Month

Razzy

Bought instantly. Megaton edition had more content and has online multiplayer on pc, but I also like the new episode in this one.

@AmplifyMJ @Moroboshi876 The Saturn version is more of a remake, they used a fully 3d engine with fancy effects, but had to cut down on level complexity to make it work, plus it had fewer level in general. Feels like a very different game.

Re: Early Tech Analysis Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Reveals Frame Rate And Resolution

Razzy

Picked up the Eu collector's edition and so far I like it, though the resolution in handheld mode does drop a lot. The game always looks blurry.

For people who keep mentioning the 3ds version, that one at least ran in native resolution. Sub-native resolution always looks blurry, while even low but native resolution is easier on the eyes.

My guess is that the same thing happened as with XC2 - Nintendo cannibalized Monolith Soft's team to help BotW development and we got all these issues with XC2 graphics. Now Nintendo is developing BotW's sequel and I bet it happened again.

I'm not sure they actually improved the engine before this release. Remember that XC2 had the entire world designed in higher detail, while this uses a world designed with Wii level of detail and then tweaked and enhanced. Plus, the team size is lower in this one, so there's fewer high poly models to render at the same time.

PS. I'm quite sure I posted my thoughts about why XC2 and this turned out this way here, but my post seems to have disappeared.

Re: Nintendo Expands The Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles

Razzy

Jeez, slow down, Nintendo, between the complete lack of features, shoddy infrastructure and drip-feeding those games like blood from a stone, you're giving as much too much for our money.

@retro_player_77 Actually, you do have to, selling candy with untranslated packaging is illegal in many countries, since it makes it difficult to check the ingredients, which is problematic in the age of allergies.

And not translating a game you're releasing is just lazy.

Re: Video: Resident Evil 5 And 6 Switch Demos Marred By Poor Performance

Razzy

Huh, I felt there was something amiss with the re5 demo, but couldn't put my finger on it. Now I know. The demo ran alright otherwise, albeit a bit slow from time to time.

The re6 demo, however, hooo-boy, I only played the introduction with Leon up until you get the campaign selection, but any larger areas chug down to ca. 20 fps.
