The new Switch OLED model arrives next month and ahead of its release Nintendo has rolled out a sizable update - bumping the system firmware all the way up to version 13.0.0.
We heard how Bluetooth audio support was spotted in an update earlier this year and now it's been officially released. Headphones, earbuds, speakers, and other Bluetooth-enabled audio devices can now be paired with the Switch family systems. Bluetooth microphones are not supported and a maximum of two wireless controllers can be paired with the system when using Bluetooth audio. You also can't use Bluetooth audio when local wireless communication is active.
In addition to this, 13.0.0 includes a dock update. This is for docks with a LAN port (specifically the one releasing alongside the new OLED model). There's now also an option to "maintain" the internet connection when your system is in Sleep Mode, and the setting is enabled by default. Control stick calibration has also been adjusted and there's now a way to check if your net connection is using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency.
Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official website:
Ver. 13.0.0 (Released September 14, 2021)
Bluetooth audio support was added.
- Headphones, earbuds, speakers, and other audio devices that connect with Bluetooth can now be paired with Nintendo Switch family systems for audio output.
- Bluetooth microphones are not supported.
- Up to two compatible wireless controllers can be connected to the system while using Bluetooth audio.
- Bluetooth audio cannot be used while local wireless communication is active.
- For more information, see How to Pair and Manage Bluetooth Audio Devices.
“Update Dock” was added under System in System Settings for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model systems, allowing for software updates to Nintendo Switch docks with a LAN port.
- Dock software updates are not available for Nintendo Switch docks without a LAN port.
- This feature was not added to Nintendo Switch Lite.
- For more information, see How to Update the Dock Firmware.
“Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode” was added under Sleep Mode in System Settings.
- When this setting is enabled, systems with wired internet connections will maintain internet connection even while in sleep mode. This allows for software and add-on content to download to the system while the system is in sleep mode.
- The setting is enabled by default.
- When this setting is disabled, the system will connect to the internet only periodically, which decreases power consumption.
Note: Systems that are not updated to version 13.0.0 or later behave as if this setting is enabled.
The method to initiate “Calibrate Control Sticks” in System Settings was changed.
- From System Settings, go to Controllers and Sensors, select Calibrate Control Sticks, then fully tilt the control stick in any one direction and keep it tilted for a few seconds to begin calibration.
Users can now view whether their wireless internet connection is using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band under “Connection Status” after selecting Internet in System Settings.

I will update my Switch tonight after working time.
This is the most Nintendo thing ever.
PD: Just tried my soundbar and wireless earbuds. Latency is not an issue and works flawlessly.
Really happy we finally get bluetooth support 🙂
lol finally, strange that only two wireless controllers can be hooked up at the same time tho
...I have a 5.1 sound bar that has bluetooth...but something tells me surround sound won't work this way. sighs
Just give the Switch Dolby support already Nintendo. T.T
Hope this gets datamined soon. If we're really getting Game Boy games or another software library announced for Switch Online in a Direct this month, is there a good chance the files are already there?
oh my goodness, it finally happened. Not gonna lie, I saw the subheading and thought it was a joke!
On a different note, a pair of Joycon connected counts as two devices being used, which is..... Weird
Bluetooth?! Omg is this really Nintendo? It feels like a dream!
So... you're telling me... the switch had bluetooth audio capabilities? This whole time?!
Can't believe it took them over 4 years for these 😏
I’m kinda salty. I wish we could use the microphone from our Bluetooth headphones. I’m sick of having to go into handheld mode to play fortnite and voice chat with friends
Well, the Bluetooth connectivity is not something I particularly needed, but it's nice to finally have the option.
Now I need to get my nephew another pair of Bluetooth headphones. My sister got him a pair some time ago, but that was when the Switch still didn't support BT and she returned them.
Finally Blue tooth. Feels like forever!
Bluetooth audio is nice. Bluetooth has a hardware component so it's kind of crazy they can just add this to existing switches with a software update (or is it crazy it wasn't always there if it was possible?)
And yeah, boo to lack of folders. 😝
Nintendo would rather do networking black magic than let us sort our games.
@Mitchyd96 bought a controller like this to use to play Fortnite on the switch, works flawlessly and let’s you connect headphones directly in the controller. https://www.target.com/p/powera-spectra-enhanced-wired-controller-for-nintendo-switch/-/A-82566149 only thing is there’s no NFC/Rumble support, and it’s wired, but they give you a 10 foot cord.
@ToadBrigade absolutely! Now that we have Bluetooth give us folders!
Dear Nintendo Life: Now that we have it, I'd love to see a write-up on the advantages of various Bluetooth audio devices on Switch. Is surround sound worth it? What should I look for in a Bluetooth headset?
Fantastic. Going to test it tomorrow but I can now finally use duel audio with my switch and PC.
Yes now I just have to go and get some Nintendo BT oh wait - they don't have them yet.....
4 years later! Wow there’s hope for folders after all
I do appreciate the features they added, but boy oh boy is this such a Nintendo move. A full bump from 12 to 13.0 and the core feature is blue tooth audio support after 4 years on the market.
For “F” sake hire more engineers to finish up this product roadmap. It’s gonna be 2024 by the time we get Folder, themes, and and updated UI. I’m honestly not unhappy it’s just funny as hell at this point.
@FroZtedFlakerZz That is because of BT's limited bandwidth. And this is also why there isn't BT mic support, as that's a separate stream to the device from audio output that would suck up all remaining bandwidth, leaving none for wireless controllers.
I never thought they'd actually go through the bluetooth.
@theiRiS I know right? That's what I'm saying!
'Cannot be used during wireless communication'? I mean I'm glad for the Bluetooth but are you kidding me? What is this Blue 1.0? Rofl. Gawd I can't wait for Steamdeck.
Today I bought wired headphones for my Switch since my Bluetooth ones didn't work. Crazy timing.
Bluetooth support? And it only took 4 1/2 years instead of being available out of the box at launch. Uuuhhh... great. Better late than never I suppose.
@Matroska
F. Though you still get higher sound fidelity.
Bluetooth sucks. I know people are going to be super disappointed with the quality of audio and with the latency. But most people won’t know any better.
That being said, some people aren’t bothered by the latency, and sometimes it can be minimal enough to not be too noticeable, so I do think it’s a good option for those people specifically.
But I advise people to at the very least buy a headset with a dedicated 2.4 GHz wireless dongle (like Arctis 1 or Arctis 9 Wireless). But preferably wired headphones. The difference in quality is night and day. Absolute night and day.
@Joeynator3000
Bluetooth can’t even transmit CD quality audio due to limited bandwidth. Surround sound? Maybe in 2035. Bluetooth is for super compressed 2 channel audio only. Though I did read a report Bluetooth is going to be able to handle full CD quality audio in 2022.
@Krysus
That’s just the limitations of Bluetooth. It can’t even transmit CD quality audio it’s so limited, and that’s with 5.0. With two controllers dedicated to bandwidth already, there’s not much left, especially for mic audio which has to have as little compression as possible to preserve clarity.
I can’t wait for SteamDeck either, but it doesn’t have to dedicate bandwidth to two controllers. And frankly, Bluetooth is garbage anyways. I’m not going to use gutter trash with my steam deck, I’m going to use proper wired audiophile grade headphones with top tier audio quality. At the very least, grab a Sennheiser PC38X from Drop for $150 which, compared to more expensive headphones isn’t the best but absolutely smokes even the $500 wireless headsets you can buy.
wow! a very nice surprise! I figured Bluetooth support would never be
@RandomNerds They'll never do that. Nintendo operate by cutting as many corners as possible to minimise costs, then overcharge for what they do have. If you hack your Switch you can have themes and UI changes. Random guys on the internet can make this modification while Nintendo pretend it's complex.
I just tested the Bluetooth audio. If I had to guess, it seems like I get 300-400 ms of audio lag. Not great at all, but not completely awful either when considering that I have played games with that much input movement lag i.e. Rockstar games.
I, for one, am very happy to have the option of using my gutter trash Bluetooth earbuds with the Switch.
Omg...just tried this out. I dont know what level or method of Bluetooth this is, but that lag is atrocious. It's actually worse than the PS Vita with the exact same headset on the exact same game. Good lord. Even when Nintendo pretends to give us an old feature they do a crap job.
Wondering if this will affect third party docks at all. I just recently bought a portable dock and it works fine and hasn't bricked my Switch. Seems like the days of Switches being bricked by docks is over so hopefully this update won't change that.
Got my bluetooth headphone adapter for my switch in the mail this afternoon, and now during the night of the same day... Nintendo had to release a update that made that purchase entirely worthless... GREAT!!
Work on Airpods amazing Nintendo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
NOW I can make proper use of the music mode in Super Mario 3D All Stars
@Matroska Random guys don't have to consider branding/consistency/future plans/etc.
The actual work involved is probably dead simple. The thought process behind the decision, less so.
That said, come on Nintendo! Folders are a clear user WANT and probably quite close to being a user NEED.
@JaxonH I'm amazed they are trying to push 3 different Bluetooth devices thru one channel and think it's a service. My old PS4 Gold's with the dongle give off some great quality thru the dock or USB C.
@JasmineDragon
For the record. Bluetooth is amazing for a lot of things, but until more advancements are made to eliminate latency and increase bandwidth, it’s just not there yet for gaming. In 5-10 years I suspect we’ll have Bluetooth that can carry 16-24 bit audio at 2,000+ kbps with lag so negligible most people won’t even detect it with the human ear. And I very much look forward to that day because wireless is the future of audio. But… today is not that day.
That said, you’re the one playing the games, so if you’re happy, that’s all that matters. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks
What does this mean: Bluetooth audio cannot be used while local wireless?
@FroZtedFlakerZz Probaly Bluetooth audio needs a lot of
bandwidth.
@HedgehogEngine
They’re making advancements, for sure. Wireless is the future, after all. But Switch doesn’t have that. I’m not convinced on the lag from marketing materials. Most real tests I’ve observed show 50 ms lag for 5.0.. I don’t doubt it has a theoretical capacity to reach single digits, but how long til we actually see it realized or in which specific situation it can do so, that’s another question.
We’ll get there… eventually. I read an interesting article about Bluetooth advancements via aptX Lossless coming in the next year or so.
https://www.pcmag.com/news/qualcomms-aptx-lossless-brings-cd-quality-sound-to-bluetooth
@Krysus
Probably why they didn’t have it up til now. I suspect they never had plans to add it but people wouldn’t shut up about it so, I guess better to just go ahead and enable it and, if it makes some ppl happy that’s terrific. There will be a lot of ppl who will quickly realize the shortcomings of BT for gaming though. Be careful what you wish for, as they say.
PS headsets use a wireless dongle with proprietary frequency to reduce lag and increase bandwidth. Most wireless headsets worth their salt come with a dedicated dongle (Xbox has built in wireless- not Bluetooth though as, according to them, it can’t meet their specs for latency, so “Xbox Wireless” is specifically designed for low latency- normal BT headsets won’t work, gotta be “designed for Xbox”). And in terms of wireless headset quality, ya, they’re about as good as you can get for that price range. PS Pulse and Platinum, Arctis 7 and 9 Wireless… they’re all about the same. You can step up to the Audeze Penrose for $350 with planar magnetic drivers but even then, you’re limited by wireless bandwidth. As long as you never use a good pair of wired headphones you’ll never miss what you don’t have. But the minute you put on a quality pair of wired headphones, it’s hard to ever go back.
The 560S is a really high quality entry level pair. Highly recommended at $170 open box (MSRP $199). Everyone should own a pair of these bad boys.
Sennheiser 560S Headphones
For an out of body experience though- the pinnacle of gaming audio, you’ve gotta commit. The Sennheiser 800S open box for $1300 (MSRP $1699). For those who can swing it, you’ll never play games any other way.
Sennheiser 800S Headphones (the cans, the myth, the legend)
For some reason my earbuds sound really crackily on the switch, am I the only one?
Ah, now we know why bluetooth audio wasn't supported from the get-go. Sounds like it was a hurdle to implement because they had to limit other wireless connections in order to enable wireless audio. Great thing they finally did it!
Another update.. more stability.... wait.....WHAT???
@HedgehogEngine
Yeah, I doubt I'll ever be using BT earbuds to play Switch games.
@JaxonH my Ps Golds are pretty damn reliable with the Aux cable. I picked up the new Xbox $99 pair and they're decent. But my Surface Earbuds are surprisingly good quality, and my daily driver, if they just didnt fall out of my ears all the damn time. This Nintendo deal is just a straight up face plant. 20 bucks says it works far better on Switch Lite.
I can finally ditch the dongle! It make transitioning headphones from my phone way easier! Wish it had come earlier but I'll take it.
I'm using anker soundcore Life A2 noise canceling headphones and they are very low latency and work great with the update.
Folders, themes, and a free calculator for firmware update 15.0.0 please Nintendo. Thank you.
@Krysus
Maybe. Maybe not. I tested my Arctis 9 Wireless (it has a dedicated 2.4 GHz wireless dongle but it also has Bluetooth so that it can connect to my phone at the same time and mix the Discord audio with the game audio coming from the dongle), by connecting it directly to Switch via Bluetooth, and the lag was unbearable. Which I already expecting going in.
It’s just… there’s a reason it was never implemented. But again. If it makes some people happy so be it.
A month ago I was using the Arctis 9 Wireless. Now I’m using wired Sennheiser 800S with a G6 DAC/AMP. I never knew audio could be such an experience. I kinda feel like, if you’re using headphones, you should either be doing it from a utility standpoint (need chat for MP- buy Arctis 9 Wireless to mix Discord audio), or for the experience. And if you’re doing it for the experience, do it right. I used to think wired headphones were an abomination in this age of wireless and would be super inconvenient. I was so wrong. I’ll never use wireless again. Even if they solve the latency and band with issues, all the high-end headphones are wired anyways.
DID I SERIOUSLY JUST READ THIS? Like, this can't be real... Nintendo just quietly slips in FRIKIN BLUETOOTH compatibility? My most desired missing feature since day 1?? I didn't even know the Switch could technically do that!
Wow, just wow, 4 years later and they release Bluetooth support. Crazy Nintendo.
@invictus4000 It's always been there. No idea, other than being Nintendo, why they didn't enable it.
@JaxonH My MX4s seem high end to me. The only thing that I use them for semi-wired is on my PS5 connected to my Dualsense controller for 3D audio. So many companies have figured out Bluetooth, to see Nintendo struggling with it is heart breaking.
@BigBossKeys Is this your first time with a Nintendo update?
I'd use a bluetooth keyboard for rocket league, if they granted that feature. I'm doing ok with a wired usb keyboard, though.
Took them some time. Maybe Netflix in 7 years? Switch 2 may have bluetooth 5.0 support, 5 years after release.
@Pirate1 It means you can't use the bluetooth audio feature while wirelessly playing with someone nearby through local wireless so if you're playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wirelessly with another Switch player nearby then the feature is disable. If both of you are playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online or split screen then you can use it.
So, I will always have to look at the new "Update Dock" button yet never will be using it. I will not buy the new model unless the screen is smaller. I guess I am weird.
Welp, there's nintendos big news for the week
@tseliot
Microsoft doesn’t use Bluetooth because it doesn’t meet their specs for latency, and that’s for a console released 10 months ago. The DualSense doesn’t use regular old Bluetooth either. It’s a proprietary fork designed for low latency. Generic bluetooth is just bad for gaming. Switch was never designed with it in mind, especially as a console released just a few short months after 2016 ended when the tech was even worse than it is today.
I don’t really think they’re “struggling” with it. I just think the system was never designed to integrate it. But by popular demand, ppl think BT is the bees knees so they said screw it, see for yourself then. Anyone using Bluetooth for audio probably doesn’t care much about audio quality anyways (not an insult). Hence why I see some comments complaining how bad it is (as I expected) and yet others loving it.
But whatever. I’m not gonna use it, not for Switch or any other console. But if it makes other people happy then it’s good to have as an option.
Pretty nice that they've added the option but I only really ever use my headphones when I'm playing rhythm games so I'll still just stick to using a wired connection.
That’s cool that they added BT but I will stick with wired audio. Wireless even RF (although I prefer that to BT) still isn’t there yet.
@Specter_of-the_OLED thanks!
blueteefh is good but folders guys
i got my apple airpods pro to pair up but the sound sucks...even with all the safety settings turned off the volume was too low
The new iPhone comes out today AND the switch gets BLUETOOTH for headphones??? I have truly been blessed on this day
Wasted money on the adapter
@FroZtedFlakerZz
The limitation makes totally sense, if you connect 8 joy-cons to the console (4 pairs) the latency is super high.
Best update ever. Studio beats pro 3 connect perfectly.
Cue people blaming the Switch for audio lag when using Bluetooth headphones.
Bluetooth is nice bit did that really need another full number update? :/ Still waiting for actually good updates.
@Krysus Bluetooth and 2.4GHz WiFi share the same frequencies, which can cause interferences, when the driver is not optimized for it.
Nintendo probably just do not want to deal with all this stuttering audio problems.
Anyway, Bluetooth audio is just a gimmick on the Switch. Very likely we do not get AAC nor LDAC codecs, so it will sound awful on decent headphones. Also, with regular Bluetooth the audio delay might be practically unusable.
Fortnite sounded just fine online…. skyward sword sounds all nintendoie brilliant. I’ve never plugged in a headset to my switch… it feels like I just got a brand new system. I vote for folders in the next 4 years.
Whoa didn't know Bluetooth latency could be this bad. Guess it's because I'm using a switch lite?
I can us a switch pro controller with beats pro at the same time in hand held. Wonder what happens if I slap it in the dock…..amazing….. amazing……. Game changer 😂…… I’m a good 30 feet away from my tv with my headphones going skyward sword and it works amazing for me. …. whole new system.
@FroZtedFlakerZz Bluetooth has limited bandwidth. Like actually any wireless communication. Limiting the amount of connected devices helps reducing latency.
OMG! Best update yet. Finally no need to haul around a dongle. Love it!
I have zero use for Bluetooth audio, but cementing a setting for maintained Internet connection in sleep mode is definitely welcome.
EDIT: damn, my fault for inattentive reading, but it appears kinda useless to me as well - the option is somehow stated to apply only to WIRED internet connections. Which is one thing my Switch ownership hasn't seen in all these 4+ years - LAN port or no LAN port, even my desktop PC (not to mention all the other tech) at home connects to the initially optical-fibered connection via a Wi-Fi router these days.😅 I guess my hope for stable overnight downloads was a bit premature.
At last a proper update not just stability nonsense.
Bluetooth works decent enough on the AirPods Max that I've tested. There is a little bit of latency. But less than I had on the PSVita. For simple games this is fine, but I wouldn't play any platformers or rhythm based games this way.
I was going to snark about the Switch finally catching up to 2009's PSP Go, but that would actually be a lie, using the same headphones my Switch (handheld mode) has worse latency than my old PSP Go. That's some kind of special achievement.
Cya
Raziel-chan
Now they should start giving us a Nintendo Direct any day now…
I literally could not believe what I reading when I came across this. I had to check so many sources to make sure it wasn’t some kind of mistake.
I’ve never updated something so fast in my life haha
Nice. Just tested out the cheap pair of bluetooth headphones I almost exclusively use now (I have a pair of decent wired ones, but the cord is such a drag, man!). There's the slightest little bit of delay, but I adjusted to it quickly, and now this means I can use headphones in docked mode. This'll be my go-to option for Switch now until Nintendo releases controllers with a headphone jack.
This move single handedly ended the 3rd party market for NSW BT dongles.
Such a basic feature!
Buy hey at least we finally got it lol
@Just_2_milky why? The switch has to receive and communicate with two different signals. It’s very logical that a pair of joy-cons counts as two devices.
@Razzy let it adjust for a few seconds. It gets better after the signals of the bluetooth have ‘unwired’ with the signals of the joy-cons.
I just updated and tested with my AirPods Pro. There is some slight latency, enough to be noticeable but not enough to be distracting. I understand this is basically a fact of life with video gaming and Bluetooth. Also max volume still too quiet IMO.
In any case, great feature! I thought this was a hardware limitation, so I’m happy to be wrong here.
@JaxonH you wrote down properly how I felt about the addition of Bluetooth audio to the switch. Thanks!
Wow, a proper serious update. Very pleased to see Bluetooth headphones support, even if it’s baffling that it took so long.
I was thinking of all the people who got a Bluetooth adapter, and all the shops that won't be able to shift them.
tried it on my galaxy buds+. a small hint of audio lag, and kinda quiet even at full volume. but a nice enough option since i fully switched to bluetooth headphones
@HedgehogEngine they did include Apt-X LL support.
but unless you're using Apt-X LL headphones you won't notice a difference.
i tested it with my Avantree HS136 and i get so little latency i'm physically unable to even estimate the latency.
and for gaming that's exactly what you need, media can account for the delay but games cannot.
@ToadBrigade folders or themes are so 10 years ago.
People need to come to 2021 and try Metadata.
Perfect. I keep wanting to hear better when I'm gaming at bed time!
I'm quite happy with it!! I used wired headphones with a dongle audio card on my Switch, but this is great for when I'm traveling!
@AlexanderDaniels I feel like you might have left some detail out of that post because, well, why not just plug headphones into the Switch itself?
It's called Bluetooth after the old Nordic king Harald Bluetooth. The logo is actually his initials in Old Norse runes.
4 years later and you still can’t chat via a Bluetooth headset…..
Now I don't have to lug around a separate wired headphone set just for the Switch; I can use my phone's Bluetooth earbuds!
finally you can have bluetooth headsets. amazing how quickly they added that feature
It just took them 4 1/2 years to activate the Bluetooth audio function 😅😂
But glad to hear it's finally possible.
We're getting there... slowly, very slowy
Joycon firmware updated as well. Pro controller seemingly not.
I'm both happy and... yesterday I got my bluetooth to usb-c adapter on which I've spend 40€ specifically for my Switch
Aaahhh finally!! I guess my little plug-in adaptor thing is of no more use
Is it unreasonable to be annoyed about how long it took Nintendo to enable Bluetooth audio?
Spare a thought for the companies that were selling bluetooth adapters... I guess their stock is all going to landfill now, and the purchased adapters sinking to the bottom of the "wires and cables" box/drawer everyone has (and visits every so often looking for a specific cable they need, but low and behold you don't actually already have that particular cable!)
Great! Now add Bluetooth support for keyboards, please!
Would be awesome for Fuze4 and SmileBasic!
Guess it's time to say farewell to my USB-C bluetooth adapter.
It was a nifty lil thing. So tiny I more often than not forgot there was something attached .
Hopefully there's no lag on the new official way.
Love the Bluetooth connectivity even through the slight lag. It's turned my Switch into a portable music player 😅😬 (well, for Nintendo tunes since there's no way to stream them legitimately). I can chuck my Switch into a big travel case, close it, chuck that case into my backpack, close it, and I can still enjoy music wirelessly.
Gaming-wise, there's some slight lag but it doesn't kill me or render the experience unplayable for me.
@nocdaes I don't think it is, no. As a lifelong big N fan, I bought my Switch on day one and I have enjoyed and played the hell out of it. But Nintendo's policies and business practices have left much to be desired for quite a while now. Treating fans with strong disrespect in my opinion. A few things that bother me?
-You have to play for online multiplayer but some games, like Mario Maker 2, are unplayable.
-The UI of the console is stupidly bare bones. No folders, no option to sort your games... really? It's 2021 FFS.
-Game sharing between a Switch and a Switch lite is a nightmare.
-The whole thing with Mario 35. Why on earth did they have to make it a limited time experience?
-The fact that they never acknowledged those of us who supported the Wii U and had already paid full price for the games that where ported.
They REALLY don't deserve the fans they have and they don't deserve to have sold so many consoles.
@Zverik just return it
@JaxonH Completely agree. Wireless is convenient and getting better but wired remains superior. I have a pair of Grado sr325e which I use for Breath of the Wild. Sounds amazing, very immersive. The removal of the headphone jack from phones is a bug bear of mine. Be interesting to see if Nintendo's next handheld has one or not. Not to say there aren't good wireless headphones out there though. I've got some B & W PX7s which I'll try later. Nice to have the option.
I could of done with this about a week ago... at least I have it for future purposes I suppose.
So just gave it a try and it seems to be mixed bag.
Menu's you can hear a slight lag and when I tried out Skyward Sword HD, then there was a slight delay in sound when I swung the sword to hear Link's "Hyah".
But then I tried Avicii Invector (Music Rhythm game) and it seemed pretty spot on.
While I will keep using my wired headphones and have no need for Bluetooth audio it's good to know the option is there and it will probably make many people happy. Also nice to have the option to limit data transfers in standby-mode. But as many have already mentioned - 13 firmware versions and there is still no useful way to handle big game collections. Finding a certain game in my now 200+ game list is getting ridiculous... I want those folders so bad!
Finally!!!!
To bad it took such a long time but better than never
"Headphones, earbuds, speakers, and other audio devices that connect with Bluetooth can now be paired with Nintendo Switch"
Why 4 years late, for God's sake? That's one more of their decisions I can't get.
I'm gonna test it later. Since I play most of the time undocked, it might be great for me (provided it works well)
@FroZtedFlakerZz It's probably due to Switch's limited Bluetooth functionality. Then again if you're playing with bluetooth headphones you're probably doing it alone, right? Unless you were thinking of pairing up a speaker for some reason.
It took me a good 15 minutes of trying, but finally got my OG model Switch to recognise my Jabra headphones. This will make life a lot easier when commuting - can easily “switch” between listening music while walking to listening to Switch while playing it on the train
Bluetooth audio!!!! Finally I can use my proper headphones without a stupid wire.
Bluetooth was kept from us for over four years, for reasons only Nintendo know about.
But now they need to balance the features of the Original Switch with the Oled model. The Original Switch will be phased out during next year, production will stop when the Oled production is meeting demand's.
Nintendo's priority is to sell enough Oleds to existing Switch owners who want to upgrade, while keeping the demand for the Original Switch high.
The price cut, Bluetooth, and maybe Christmas bundles will maintain those high sales.
The price gap between both machines is not that great (the price of a game) and new buyers, unless they are skint will go for the Oled model.
One step forward: Adds Bluetooth support.
Two steps back: doesn't support chat or work during local play.
Sure, its a weird limitation, but to be honest; if I am using Bluetooth headphones, I am probably playing a single player game.
@thugpipe I am using the Anker Soundcore Q30 headphones and there is minimal latency as well, plus with the bonus of noise canceling, I feel sorry for all the other people whose headphones aren't up to the task though.
Super excited for the Headphones at long last, but…
Is no-one commenting on the Controller Calibration update?
What is this thing? Is it a potential Drift solution?
@Piyo the delay is...pretty bad. I'm no audio-file to speak on the quality but audio lag always drives me crazy.
@avictorao how would you like for them to acknowledge wii u fans?
Freaking FINALLY!! I will say that the Bluetooth is quieter than most devices I use though, still probably better to use wired headphones if audio is a concern
@UltimateOtaku91 How do you think the joycons were paired to the system?
@zool price cut won't be happening in the US, only Europe got that.
Joy-con Update available.
Four years later... Perhaps Nintendo was afraid of someone hacking Switch with their Sony headphones 🤣.
@FroZtedFlakerZz could be limitations of the Bluetooth chips they're using or the software. My bet is the software and they could add the ability for more.
I literally just bought bluetooth headphones this week and was considering buying regular earbuds for my Switch. Guess I won't have to do that anymore! I can't wait to test out the new update tonight
@JaxonH You obviously haven't heard of LDAC or aptx HD. Bluetooth can transmit CD quality audio with the right codec. Not quite up there with Hi Res music quality but Sony's LDAC codec comes very close to it
Airpods pro work perfectly. Better late than never, great update! It even works docked.
@Aiodensghost it won't be available in the US because your price is already lower than the UK price. Our price includes 20% vat which has to be included in the price shown. So although we have a price reduction of £40, £8 of that is the tax, so the Switch discount is only £32.
The Discounted price is now £250, equivalent to $355. Since you are only paying $299 plus state tax (I know Florida is 6%) you are still cheaper than we are.
@hammers1man
Not lossless. And CD quality is lossless. It switches between 330, 660 and 990 kbps depending on connection.
Not saying it isn't good. But even the best codecs still compress and still can't match lossless CD quality, even in 2021.
And Switch doesn't have that anyways. As I've already stated, Bluetooth is great, fantastic even for other uses, but for gaming it sucks hard. Maybe next generation we'll have BT on consoles that's able to give high quality audio with imperceptible lag.
@BlueOcean WE CANT BE HAVING THAT NOW CAN WE🤣🤣🤣
@JaxonH LDAC 's 990kbps and 660kbps bit rate is as good as CD quality but still falls quite short of Hi Res audio quality.
https://www.soundguys.com/ldac-ultimate-bluetooth-guide-20026/
I tried it on my galaxy buds and sony ht-ct180 soundbar + subwoofer. I didn't detect any lag, only tried on pinball fx3
I'm not a headphone person, but I tried hooking it up to my Bose bluetooth speaker for louder audio when I'm playing in my car. Unfortunately, the max volume was much lower than even the console's speakers. Guess this feature is only designed to work properly with headphones.
@hammers1man
Even if it comes close, it's a moot point. It's not used on consoles. And this entire discussion is about how Bluetooth audio sucks for gaming.
That said, specs on paper aren't the whole story. As the article you linked mentions: LDAC’s 990 and 660kbps settings cut it very fine, requiring a very strong connection to avoid the occasional stutter. It’s no wonder why the 990kbps setting is rarely used, as there’s a chance of stuttering just below -60dBm, making a reliable connection difficult
Also clarified is this.
A CD (or equivalent FLAC / lossless file) is 2 channels of 16 bit samples at a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz, producing a data rate of 2 x 16 x 44100= 1,411 kbps, which is is higher than LDAC's highest data rate, which you correctly state is 990kbps. Therefore some data (almost a third) must be thrown away, and LDAC cannot be considered lossless, although it is the closest you can get over over a Bluetooth connection.
And that's with the 990 setting, which even most phones don't default to, and even when they do, the connection can see stuttering. So ya, we're just not there yet.
@JaxonH As you obviously have never tried LDAC and seem to think all bluetooth audio is rubbish I'll explain . I only listen to flac files and Hi Res audio. My Sony WH-1000XM3 using Sony's connect headphone app on my Experia 5ii to the highest quality sound setting and I only use these headphones at home so no dropping the bit rate for connectivity problems. The sound quality is superb over bluetooth, as good as plugging into my phone's jack with the same headphones for CD quality sound. It's not like the Switch's DAC produces fantastic sound anyway. But I agree with you on latency for gaming.
I also have a pair of open back Senneisser HD660s which do show up the limits of the Switch's DAC anyway which is average at best but better than the Oculus Quest 2's which is just awful. Now if I plug those Senneissers into my £300 DAC in my PC they sound incredible. Shadow of The Tomb Raider in Dolby Atmos for headphones sounds as immersive as it gets in gaming.
Only took 4 years to add a feature that was requested day one that even the cheaper and most simple phones have had for a decade.....sounds like Nintendo to me
@CammyUnofficial Not fans. People who gave it support and already paid for these games. I don't know. What I do know is that (amongst all the other things that I mentioned before) as a Wii U owner I felt kind of cheated when, during a certain period of time, a lot of the major releases where near-to-identical ports of games that I had already paid full price for and enjoyed once.
But this is just one of the many things I think they have done wrong, it's not to be singled out but observed as part of a group of mistakes.
@avictorao
I am a Wii U owner as well. And, yes, there have been some games that have come out that are mostly the same game I already bought on the Wii U. Super Mario 3D World comes to mind.
My daughter and I have already completed that game, so no interest in us to go through something we already went through for the little additional content.
But . . . the other side of the coin, at least for me, is that there were so few Wii U's out there. So only so many of us got to enjoy Super Mario 3D World. So IMHO it would be a total shame for that great game to be trapped on the Wii U console. I think it totally made sense for Nintendo to let that game be enjoyed by a bigger audience.
On the other hand (and I'm not sure if this is a thing right now), is that if someone bought the game on Wii U as a digital download, could Nintendo offer a discount to buy the same game for the Switch.
If I remember correctly, that happened with some games when you went from Wii to Wii U.
I think I bought Super Mario Bros on the Wii. And then when I got the Wii U, the store offered a discount on Super Mario Bros for Wii U because I already had that game for the Wii?
@hammers1man
I don't question your subjective opinion on its sound quality. But the fact is, even that codec at its absolute best is only transmitting 60% of CD quality (which according to the article you linked, rarely is able to use the highest setting anyways- their words not mine). Maybe that's good enough. You say it is. Which, that's cool..
I'll pass though. Until I can get quality on par with wired headphones, with lag on par with wired headphones, I'm not really interested. But I'm not knocking it if you like it.
Switch isn't the best for audio- no fancy HRTF virtual surround for headphones, but it's not bad. I use Sennheiser 800S with a Soundblaster G6 DAC/AMP, and when you activate the SBX mode and just turn on the virtual surround to 12/100 for a bit of reverb and crossfeed, it sounds incredible, especially with the soundstage of the 800S.
Switch can do 5.1 surround though which sounds incredible on my Sennheiser Ambeo with SVS subwoofer. I think I prefer headphones for gaming though, and reserve the Ambeo for Dolby Atmos movies and shows.
I also use Dolby Atmos for headphones on PC, and I love it. More so than DTS Sound Unbound, though I use that on occasion depending on compatibility. Playing Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect Legendary Edition are fantastic. Of course, PS5 has 3D audio which is basically the same as Atmos. It sounds good too.
Are you kidding? This launched without BT audio. Everyone assumed it would have BT audio. Everyone demanded BT audio. And it took them 4 and a half years and two new hardware releases later to finally say that the hardware was there all along and they just didn't get around to adding the software support now?! Is this for real?!
@NEStalgia
Of course it was always there. The issue wasn't "could it be done", the issue was, "could it be done without people complaining about 150+ ms of lag to the point most people hate it". Which, the answer is no. The Switch uses SBC connection. And we're already seeing the comments in here from people saying, "wtf? The lag is horrible!" Ya, no kidding. That's why it was never implemented. It's subpar, like driving to work on a tricycle. But, the ignorance of the masses doesn't know any better, so they demand it. Well, there ya go. Enjoy your laggy, lossy audio. 😉
Wait, so my Sony headset can connect directly to the Switch, but not a Playstation!?
@JaxonH At least we are on the same page with Senneisser and Soundblaster then .
I listened to most music and PC games wired, open back headphones can't be beat for gaming and soundstage. My friend tried to sell me his pair of 800S he wanted £600 for them but already just bought the 660s. He owns so many headphones and has his own company making headphone cables, made me a custom claret and blue cable with pure silver wiring that he would sell for £200 on his site for helping him with his tax returns.
I have just tried my Sony's on bluetooth on the Switch and the latency is actually quite good. Much better than the bluetooth usb I had but never really used because of delay.
Also talking about bluetooth latency, the Amazon firestick has none that I can tell,I think it uses software to delay the picture. My Samsung TV which must use bluetooth SBC codec is unwatchable with bluetooth. I have also tried LDAC and AAC on my Sony Ultra HD Blu Ray player and AAC has very minimal latency.
Also latency also depends on the headphone some are worse than others.
@JaxonH Oh. SBC. So it's still Nintendo after all...
@hammers1man
Holy crap, you could have gotten the 800S for what equates to less than $1000 USD? That's a deal! I would have snapped that up. I grabbed open box for $1300 shipped (no tax since it was open box, I guess). Best deal I could find. Also got the Hifiman Arya (July 2021 Stealth Magnet Revision) and Focal Clear MG for $1200 each open box. Arya is uncomfortable though. Had to buy Dekoni Nuggets and attach to the headband for padding. Clears are great, but don't really wow like the 800S and Arya.
Latency definitely does depend on the device. Some worse than others. I believe apps like YouTube and stuff have built in lip sync features for Bluetooth so most consumers don't actually perceive lag. Read about it a while back, but can't remember the specifics.
One of the biggest downsides of Bluetooth to me though, is lack of headphones on par with high quality wired ones. There are some, such as Bang & Olufsen's Beoplay Portal for Xbox, but still. The selection isn't great. Whereas with wired you've got all kinds of choices.
I've never tried the 660S but I do have the 560S. I don't use them much since I have the 800S, Arya and Clears but, they're tuned really well and sound incredibly clear. Nice to have as a reference. Also have the Sennheiser 38X gaming headset, but if I'm being perfectly honest, they don't sound nearly as good as the 560S. But they do have a mic, which is why I got them.
For Switch though. Since there's no built in chat, I use the Arctis 9 Wireless. It has a 2.4 Ghz USB dongle for audio, but also has Bluetooth to connect to your phone for Discord chat audio, and it mixes the game and chat audio. It's the best headset for Switch if you need to mix Discord chat audio. There aren't many other options on the market for doing so. Arctis Pro Wirelss, but eh.
I use a dongle DAC from my phone for music. Helm Bolt which has MQA playback (and I know the controversy over MQA, but it's what Tidal offers, and Tidal syncs with UAPP on Android, which let's you use your own DAC vs the phone DAC, so that's what I use). Do have the Hikidac Beam 2 and Hidizs S9 Pro dongle DACs coming in the mail though. They offer 3.5 and 2.5 Balanced, which can output twice as much power. Hoping it'll drive headphones better.
@Beluganator And I can use my Dual Sense on PC with xCloud, but not with PS Now. #RyanOut
@NEStalgia
Well, it was never designed for audio use, so there's no reason to pay for fancy codecs. You won't get Bluetooth on Xbox Series X either. And the bluetooth on PS5 is only for mice and keyboards and their own proprietary headset.
So it's definitely not "just Nintendo".
In fact, Switch is now the only current gen console that actively supports 3rd party headsets for audio over Bluetooth. And again, there's a reason for that. There's a reason Sony and MS don't allow it, regardless of codec. But people act like Switch is the only console without it, when in actuality it's the only console WITH it.
Never understood the "how does Switch still not allow 3rd party Bluetooth headsets" when neither Series X or PS5 allows 3rd party Bluetooth headsets. Cognitive dissonance I suppose.
@zool See #175 above mine for the answer - https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/09/nintendo_switch_system_update_13_0_0_is_live_adds_bluetooth_audio#comment6545356
@JaxonH Yes we won't have audiophile quality with bluetooth quite as it can't match up to Hi Res quality. Bluetooth active noise cancelling headphones do have place for me in certain situations like gardening for example as well as a good pair of wired open backs for gaming and music.
Yes I wish I did take those 800S as they did sound amazing, the 660s have a nice sound with really good detail. Maybe not bass heavy but I don't really like bass heavy anyway. I listen to music through direct mode on my Soundblaster AE-7 card.
I didn't think Sony's own playstation headphones were Bluetooth, The 2.0 's I own are not. I think the DS4 controller uses BT audio, this also works on PC with the BT adapter I own which is annoying because It keeps switching audio to the controller when I connects it to PC . Also remember the Vita has bluetooth audio.
@hammers1man
I can appreciate the convenience of BT. More so for phone calls and quick music listening on the phone. Considered the Momentum Wireless 2, but I quickly realized I’d rather have wired IEMs. Been eyeing the Sennheiser IE 900 lately. But it’s $1300 and I’m not sure how much I’d actually use it. Maybe one day when price drops, then.
A lot of ppl told me 800S weakness was bass. But tbh I think the bass sounds great. It’s not subwoofer like vs the Arya, but it’s present and sounds great. With G6 EQ set with a low bass shelf starting around 250 Hz that gradually rises to +5.5 dB, it’s perfect. It’s good even without it, but with it, it really seals the deal.
With the IE 900 released this year, I’m guessing Sennheiser will be releasing a new 900 flagship over ear headphone within the next year or so. It’ll probably cost way too much, but may want to keep an eye out for that.
So, what are your thoughts on custom cables? Do they actually make any audible difference? I’ve always taken the stance of, “a cable is a cable”, though I do prefer NewFantasia cables as they’re pretty good quality for a reasonable price. Problem is they don’t always have them in the ideal length with the ideal connectors. Lots of 2m length for balanced when I’d prefer 1m or 3m
@JaxonH I am not quite the audiophile you are but I did feel the cable he made me gave a nicer sound for bass and especially snare drums. I also found the more you wear in the headphones the better they sound. Google cosmic cables and check out his custom made headphone cable site.
I do have a Sennheiser GSP 500 open back gaming headset if I play online with a mic. Actually quite a good sound but like the 660S they need a powerful headphone amp.
@JaxonH No cognitive dissonance here since 2009's PSP Go and the later Vita both supported bluetooth headsets out of the box. Handhelds are perfectly fair game for comparisons seeing as the regular Switch is part handheld and Switch Light is a full handheld, and neither supported Bluetooth headsets or if the box.
I suppose congratulations are in order now that Switch sort of caught up to a 2009 handheld.

@hammers1man
My goodness, those cables can get expensive! Some are more reasonably priced though. I have no idea what makes a cable better. They all look like a nice luxury item.
@Razzy
Certainly more congratulations than other more recent, more expensive consoles which still haven’t “caught up to a 2009 handheld”, that’s for sure.
@JaxonH I am not sure I'd pay £200 for a cable but I am really pleased as he made one for me for helping him out. I did just buy a RTX 3080ti which is the most I've ever spent on any gaming don't regret it and will have to put in some overtime to help pay it off in a year 😟
Check out these reviews on his cables, a lot does go over my head. But nice he is doing well as he has a massive passion for headphones, like yourself.
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/cosmic-cables-impressions-and-discussion-thread.919770/
@jsty3105 regardless whether its is not "just Nintendo, the Switch is portable and does have Bluetooth and gamers should have been able to use that Bluetooth to listen to the games when having the sound volume turned up was not appropriate, without having to buy a separate adapter.
It has suddenly been turned on now, because the Oled has Bluetooth.
Nothing to do with what the Xbox or PS does or does not do.
@hammers1man
I'll check it out.
3080 ti? How'd you manage that? They've been OOS everywhere. I got a PS5, but I'm still using a 2080 ti myself. Not that I really "needed" to upgrade. These things are too expensive to upgrade each year. But still. 3080 ti was a pretty substantial leap to maintain 4k 60 with RT on using DLSS. Then again, my LG C1 OLED TV has Variable Refresh Rate, so I just crank 4k 60 on everything without dynamic res, because I can't notice the drops with VRR turned on. Most games I can hit 4k 60 on High settings. But some of the more demanding games without DLSS, I get drops to 45-50, such as Horizon Zero Dawn. VRR is such a Godsend.
I spend a lot on gaming myself. But... sometimes it's just nice having quality stuff to enjoy. Screw the cost. That 3080 ti will last you many years if you let it. Especially with DLSS and VRR now becoming mainstream. That's how I feel about audio and video, be it a graphics card, TV, surround system, headphones, etc. Ya it's a bug purchase BUT, it'll last 10+ years, multiple generations and provide thousands of hours of enjoyment. Live a little.
@JaxonH That's my thought tbh I have had a GTX 1080 for 5 years and managed to get £450 for it .
Video cards here in the UK are much higher in price than the US so the £1400 price of the Gigibyte Gaming OC is not actually much higher than its msrp. The RTX 3080's were going for more than that and it was the card I was waiting since last October to get but would not pay double the price for one.
AS I game in 3440x1440 Utrawide with G-Sync, I think this card should last me longer than my previous one now DLSS is becoming mainstream, checked it out and it is impressive as is Ray Tracing.
The 2080ti is an great card which I did think about getting about 8 months before the 30 series came out.
Yes VRR is a godsend and I have been using G-Sync monitors since they first came out.
@AlexanderDaniels It might not be ideal but you can get extension cables for wired headphones. I have one because my PC is at the bottom of my bed and doesn't have any speakers. I watch films or YouTube while in bed on it.
Here's an example
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zerist-Braided-Premium-Auxiliary-Smartphones/dp/B07RLN26W7/
Excellent news about Bluetooth support..glad I held out on a dongle for 4 years
@DannyBoi LOL 🤣
I believe that in four years Game Boy and Nintendo 64 games will be added to Switch. Nintendo knows how to spoil their fans.
@RandomNerds I don't think any of these features will come to the switch with the ram it has currently. Nintendo switch has a serious ram deficiency.
@avictorao Bingo! Your spot on, all my complaints rolled into one post, the only other thing that really bothers me is the build quality of the switch, it's horrible.
Bluetooth!
Keeping internet connection on when in sleep mode - that will be useful too.
@avictorao I also agree with your complaints 100%.
@NintendoDad Yes, Nintendo knows what Wii U games we own digitally, they asked us to link our Wii U and Switch accounts. The cross-buy scheme and the discounts they provided are notoriously non-existent.
@KiraMoonvalley That's because they're not Bluetooth. They use a proprietary 2.5ghz connection.
I don't know what you guys are smoking, but there is DEFINITELY latency with Bluetooth. I tried a pair of Skullcandy EVO Sesh, which are only a couple years old, and there's an obvious .5+ seconds latency. No device I've ever used with those earbuds has had a latency issue.
As someone who Kickstarted the Genki adapter and love it still, this is great news, I've wanted bluetooth audio on the Switch since day 1, thank you, Nintendo, better late than never
@zool An excerpt - What's the problem with Bluetooth?
"In case you're curious as to why game consoles still don't support Bluetooth audio when so many other devices do, the reason largely comes down to two issues: signal interference and latency."
https://mashable.com/article/ps5-xbox-series-x-how-to-use-wireless-headphones
@jsty3105 I have a Bluetooth adapter and I've never experienced signal interference or latency. So that reason does not seem like a positive excuse. And the Oled has Bluetooth.
@zool You're probably not as sensitive to audio latency like others. I'm not adversely sensitive to it either when I'm watching shows or even gaming since I use a bluetooth adapter on my Switch (yay to not needing one anymore). I've had signal interference on my Bluetooth earphone sometimes when I'm out and about.
I know it's still present though and people who are much more knowledgeable than me in these matters all say the same thing about Bluetooth and latency.
It's a pretty weird to talk about the Switch OLED having Bluetooth. The inner parts are the same as the regular switch AFAIK.
In any case, Bluetooth latency is a known thing and there's quick fix until Bluetooth tech is replaced with something else. I accept those limitations myself because of the convenience factor. I too wished the Switch launched with Bluetooth audio support from the start, even though it wouldn't be lag-free.
My WiFi speed is fast and Ping is low; I think this helps latency, or does it?
@KasperDG That has more to do with your Skullcandys. I had a pair of Bose with dreadful latency. With my Sony WF-1000M3 and WH-1000M3 the latency is barely noticeable with Switch BT audio and I mean most people not looking for it would not even notice it and I am one of this people that can't watch TV with even a slight lip sync issue.
I did have a BT adapter for switch and was not happy with the latency so I am pleased to say it is much better than that.
Wow I never realized so many people actually think they want this. Audio quality and latency clearly doesn´t mean a thing to them.
@zool Er WiFi speed and ping numbers have zero relation to Bluetooth latency. Think you may have gotten confused somewhere.
Haa. Yeeea. "Finally no more wires"
I connect my Bluetooth headphones to the switch just to realize that the sound is so delayed, that it's actually broken. "Oh" "well" I plug my wire back into the headphones. I'm not even annoyed, because this is to be expected from my favorite gaming company. Great ideas but ***** tech. 😂😁😔😬😩😭
@JaxonH How many of these more recent consoles were handhelds too?
Cya
Raziel-chan
The first time I did this the latency was awful and I was disappointed. I had tried two paired Joy-Cons while docked while the Pro Controller was charging from the dock. Later I switched to just the Pro Controller, then tried a pair of (pretty old) Sony Bluetooth headphones and the latency was better. I then tried a newer pair of headphones and the delay appeared even shorter.
Going back to the first pair the delay wasn't as bad as before. There are clearly a lot of factors in play..
@Danrenfroe2016 You are right! It's a portable console and yet I've never felt safe carrying it with me. I have always wanted to get a switch lite but then again, since game sharing is that bad.. :')
I can do what I want! My AirPods are connected, Volume is up - my IPhone is off, but I don‘t hear anything. Rebooting Switch, Shut Down - nothing helps 😩
It's about time Nintendo added this but I'm glad they did. They should keep adding what we actually want on our switch. I still wish they would do themes and add some music because I have no idea why the switch doesn't have this.
And here I was in the NL forums asking for Themes and Folders. We got Bluetooth instead. Definitely not complaining. We've needed and we've deserved this <3
@Razzy that's the weirdest angle for this. So the two (much) more powerful consoles can't handle Bluetooth but that's ok because they aren't handheld consoles? Don't need to answer that.
@avictorao yes especially the cluster that is game sharing between devices it should be simple and transparent, that's why I probably will never own more than one switch at a time.
There might be a delay but I tested it with my EarPods Pro and could not hear any myself so far. At least nothing I could notice.
Tested it with Metal Slug, Sine Mora EX and Crypt of the Necrodancer.
And I think it is loud enough if you’re not deaf 😅
Good to know my Oled switch dock has an update for when it arrives!
A PSA of my own: I have currently tried my Switch with 3 Bluetooth headphones I own; some old Beats power-something ones, Sony headphones that don’t have noise cancellation but do have an advanced Mega Bass (£150) that I bought FOR the Switch too!
Why? Because the Sony ones had an audio line in for Switch usage. Perfect!
And finally I’ve tested them with my Apple AirPods Max. Yes those £650 headphones. I even paid an extra £40 to get the line in cable! It contains the worlds smallest and best DAC chip so that’s okay. They’ve been frequently dubbed the best headphones in the world. And they’re right they are. Spatial audio is truly magic and game changing. It just feels like augmented sound. Put the headphones on and it’s a gateway to another world.
Well all headphones I’ve used have introduced lag. I imagine the codec they’re using isn’t the Sony branded ATRAC one nor is it Apples W1 chip. So the quality is okay but the lag isn’t pleasant. If you’re like me and used to zero lag from top tier audio and visual equipment then you might find yourself sticking to wired audio.
I hope the oled switch improves on their Bluetooth codec.
@Mynameishello the OLED Switch is, afaik, identical to the Switch apart from the main changes they've outlined so I wouldn't hold out hope for any improvement to the bluetooth audio experience
@jsty3105 Yes I do. Bluetooth started off used primarily on mobiles, hell, even nowadays it's not standard on PCs, but it is on laptops, mobile phones, etc. I consider it a primarily mobile technology. Even then Nintendo's main competitor in the handheld sphere implemented it long before them.
Not to mention on ps5 and xsx/s you can get official wireless headsets, did i miss Nintendo releasing one? For four years you had no official way to use any wireless headsets on Nintendo Switch, while both of the new competing consoles had official wireless headsets since the start.
Would it be better if they fully supported bluetooth? Sure, but you could use their official headsets or unofficial ones using the same protocols. That, and I don't really expect stationary computing devices to support bluetooth, since most don't.
