The latest entry in Nihon Falcom's action RPG series has been announced for the West with a "2021" release date attached. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox launched in Japan last year but gamers in the West have been waiting for more solid details on the English-language release. Fortunately, publisher NIS America kindly obliged with a trailer as part of the NGPX broadcast.
The last announcement of the 45-minute showcase, there's no firm date on the launch just yet. Here are some more details from the PR blurb, plus a handful of screenshots:
Renowned adventurer Adol Christin is cursed by a mysterious woman and becomes a Monstrum, a powerful being who can exorcise monsters. To escape from the city of Balduq, he must ally with five other Monstrum, each with their own unique Gifts, and stop the Grimwald Nox, a shadowy dimension that threatens to seep into the real world.
Excited for this finally coming to the West? Are you fan enough to brave the Japanese version? Let us know below.

Coming to the west, yes. Obviously. Confirmed for Switch? THAT’S the headline.
Ys VIII was my introduction to the series and it was wonderful, can't wait to try this one out!
Looks pretty interesting, I might grab it. Although I’m not a big fan of RPG’s.
I own the entire series. Most games on multiple platforms. I am hoping they’ll bring the older games to Switch too.
Awesome!... Was hoping this came to the Switch. Now this is what I am talking about!
Gave the old Ys VIII but now also give the New Ys NOX. Give both - this is how you do it
They just need to clarify how much later is the Switch release 🤔
I literally just started playing Ys VIII last night, so this is a nice surprise.
I figured the localization delay was because of a Switch port, but I'm glad it's confirmed now. Really excited to pick this up next year.
Too bad Xseed is holding so many Falcom games hostage now. I'd love for all the localized Trails games to be available on Switch.
@eaglebob345 Enjoy. Ys VIII is awesome.
I still wish we could get NIS' Phantom Brave. The grind was as solid as Disgaea, but the tactics summoned-time-limit gimmick was truly fascinating. I imagine I might actually finish the game if I could play it on a handheld.
And it's on everything else!
Great news! I was getting worried it'd stay ps4-bound.

Raziel-chan
Awesome, Ys games are some good fun.
Preorder for the $100 uber-edition locked in.
With Trails and Ys I think Falcom won this conference.
Not that Atlus showed up really.
Ys VIII was an awesome surprise for me, so I'm pumped for this one too!
I'm genuinely surprised this wasn't going to be a PlayStation timed exclusive like Ys VII and Ys VIII were. It's even coming to Steam day and date with PS4 and Switch. That's definitely eye catching.
YES THERE IT IS!!! This should be the headline of the site! Best news in months for switch!!! Sorry, huge Ys fan! They said, nope, not bringing this to switch for sooooo long and then suddenly, voila, there it is!! SOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!
YES!!! I'm thrilled we're getting it! "Ys VIII" was my first Ys game, but I absolutely loved every minute of it (liked it much better than XC2), so I'm very happy to hear we're getting IX as well!
@TheFrenchiestFry Na man, we still waiting on that. The NIS America official page for the trailer has.
Coming first to PS4, 2021
So people waiting for clarification - see if that is a few months or just not on the same day 🤞
Can't wait to play it again and actually understand the story ("I'm sorry I don't speak Japanese." -Chris Farley) I'll double and triple dip on PS4 and Switch.
Yeeeeeeeeeesssssss
Ys 8 is a top 5 game in the Switch library, was worried the ninth entry wouldn't make it to the Switch. This is also a great opportunity to port the other Ys games to Switch as well!
Personally this is the biggest news of the year so far.
Fantastic news. So many rpgs...so little time
I've only played Ys VIII, but that game's awesome, so I have high hopes for this one.
Very happy to see this coming to Switch. I guess Ys VIII performed well enough sales-wise to give this the green light.
YEah! Right on my wishlist
So it's now coming to Switch? I thought they said it wasn't happening.
I hope that it will look and perform better than the Ys 8 Switch port. Frame rate drops and the heavy aliased graphics were hard to stomach for me. :/
Awesome, this is Day 1 for me, been a fan of the series since the 90's. I'm really hoping this means the rest of the series will make its way to Switch. I would loose my mind to have the entire series on Switch (especially in physical form). Thank you NIS America for bringing this over.
I know this is just me being greedy, but they REALLY should have put Memories of Celceta on here too. Real shame!
But this is the best way to make it up. This is quickly becoming my very favorite RPG series
This is great news. I was afraid the previous entry on Switch didn't sell enough to justify the new game coming to the console. I'm looking forward to this.
Ys is one of the most underrated video game series of all time ...Highly recommended, and this new one has looked amazing so far. I hope we'll get more entries on the Switch ...(Still waiting for that Ys VI port, Falcom! It's the best one! Come on!)
Oh my god ...I am so excited. I can't BELIEVE it! HUGE fan right here!
@Ricowtje hope so too. a compilation cart would be great
To me personally a letdown. Why? Because it came assassin creed type of game. That's not what I want in YS game. Give me old school YS with Adol alone. Those were the best days.. after that (besides the 8th) it wasn't special anymore. Well glad who loves the new gameplay to YS game. So happy for you. But i'm skipping this one
Nice, good news!
But didn't they say they wouldn't be porting more Ys games to the Switch after Ys VIII? (which, by the way, became hard to find relatively fast)
Nice! I was a big fan of VIIi and will pick this up.
This is great, now I need a collection of the older games as well!
The premise certainly looks interesting. This is also a reminder that I need to grab and play Ys VIII on the Switch sometime.
Best announcement at new game expo today. Were some other ones, but this was the best
I've always wanted to catch up on this series but alot of them never got a US release so that's been difficult. Only played the first two.
Ys VIII was my first Ys game, this will be my second. Great news!
@Anguspuss yes please! Would buy that in a heartbeat. Oath of Felghana probably won’t be in it as it’s a different company that released it.
Adol for Smash?
I'm thrilled to see Ys 9 finally dated. Seeing a Switch port is a surprising bonus, although I hope it'll be handled better than the Ys VIII port! Assuming it will be, I may even double-dip!
@Apportal_SMM2 Ys is closer to to a hack n' slash than a JRPG, but it definitely has JRPG elements. You'll mostly be spending your time cutting down enemies to an awesome soundtrack.
Yuck. I would much rather prefer Ys Chronicles 1+2, and the Oath in Felghana.
Ys 8 may be my favorite rpg on Switch
Really looking forward to 9
I need to get back into VIII. I only got about 6-7 hours into it on the Vita. =X
Ys VIII was my first game in the series and I loved it. Will definitely be getting this!
Ys 8 was on my list of "I should try this game eventually". And now I guess I'll have to add 9 to the list too. XD
Yesssssssssss!
@Ricowtje Yes please. Oath in Felghana Switch please!
@Dualmask I am guessing it sold well digitally
First day purchase for me. Love me some Ys.
shut up and take my money!
Awesome!!! Now if Xseed can support a Switch release for the rest of the Trails series, that would be amazing. The really good thing is I guess Falcom are really getting into supporting Nintendo now, which didn't really seem likely not that long ago. Awesome news! I have a fair bit of hope that a Trails and Ys collection will make it to Switch at some point.. fingers crossed. YS IX, day one for me!
Cannot believe they’re letting NIS handle this after the total clusterf... they made with Ys VIII. Get ready for multiple patches and a total revamp of the localization translation. Game might be playable 6 months after release.
The graphics in Ys VIII, while maybe not impressive in a technical sense, still looked rather beautiful being set on that island and among ancient ruins. What's in this trailer looks rather bland. I hope that's not a good representation of the game.
@TheFox What was really cool about the colorful setting is that it went so well with the music.
It does look like they’re going for a darker approach this time.
I had an awesome time with Ys VIII, my 3rd Ys game. Boy was it long but satisfying lol. I'm not sure I'll do IX, but I'll see. So many games to play, so little time.
@mario-64 yea, the original version NISA put out was utterly shameful and lazy, but to their credit they at least put in the effort to fix it. I first played Ys VIII on the Switch after everything was fixed and the translation was great. It was only after looking at vids on youtube of the first version where I could see what all the outrage was about. Saying that, they didn't just re-write text, they re-recorded lots of dialogue aswell, which I feel counts for something. And because of all that, I highly doubt they will make the same mistake again with Ys IX.
There was heaps of outrage (same reason, Ys VIII translation) when it was announced that NISA was taking over from Xseed for Cold Steel 3 until people actually played it. Turned out it was completely fine (no patch needed). In the end, NISA have the company size to localise the games fairly quickly (unlike Xseed) and as long as they keep up the quality they've been doing recently, it's all good with me. It's better than 'certain' games never being localised at all.
@Antraxx777 Yeah it does look a lot darker. I can't wait to try it though. Ys VIII is the first game in the series I've played, and I'm having a great time with it.
Can't wait for this one.
About damn time. Ys VIII is one of my favourite games of the last few years, I even managed to play through it twice regardless of a sizable backlog of games.
I was starting worry we wouldnt be getting IX.
2021 seems so far away though.
