I mean, it looks alright and I'm so thirsty for a new F-Zero that I'd likely give it a spin if it comes out and seems decent, but... there's literally NO CHANCE this doesn't get hit with a cease and desist by Nintendo. "Inspired by" is laughable, this is a downright modern day clone.
@Mgalens I totally agree, the Switch is obviously long in the tooth at this point and it was built with underpowered hardware to begin with. But like you said, optimization is clearly an issue here and shouldn't be excused. Knowing Nintendo, we're still a long way off from an upgrade, so devs need to step up and put in the work if they want my money.
@sixrings Perhaps, and I'm sure that's well in the works at this point, but it still doesn't excuse poorly optimized ports at this point. This game has simple, although charming graphics, the Switch should play this one easily without a hitch. Obviously first-party titles are a high bar since Nintendo has intimate knowledge on the strengths and weaknesses of the hardware, but we've seen countless examples of games that are visually far more complex and still run beautifully. Stop giving developers a pass for putting such little effort into their games.
What a poor effort for the Switch release, yikes! This game doesn't exactly have intricate visuals, there's no reason it shouldn't perform flawlessly, this is just another lazy port. This is getting old at this point, developers need to do better.
@StarPoint Not a knock, but genuinely curious... what's the point in getting both digital and physical versions? Do you plan on keeping the physical version unopened for collections sake?
@Zybrissa I read your comment and had to look this up... WILD!!! I never knew this was a thing, any chance you could elaborate for me on WHY exactly it happened?
Even if the performance was better, I'm never going to pay money for a game that can and eventually will be taken from me when they decide to no longer run the streaming servers. Cloud gaming can kiss my butt, no thanks.
I'm not getting my hopes up until someone who's familiar with what made the arcade racers of the past so amazing gives it a review. I realize a lot of developers have been trying to cash in on the arcade racing nostalgia left by the likes of Virtua Racing, Daytona USA, Scud Race (Sega GT), etc., but none of them so far have realized that it's going to take more than low poly/low color pallet graphics and chiptune music to recapture that feeling. While a lot of these revivals look and sound wonderful, not a single one have nailed the handling characteristics that made the greats of old so damned good.
@BabyYoda71 Please don't drag me into your bout with someone else as a reference, thanks. Besides, you assumed an awful lot based on a 2 sentence comment.
Hopefully people keep voting NO to cloud-based games with their wallets. Publishers will eventually get the hint and stop pushing these RENTALS on us as "the future of gaming."
I know it has a cult-like following, but Wave Race 64 isn't nearly as great as everyone remembers it being. Don't get me wrong, I played it plenty back in the day and had a damn good time with it, but it's one of those games that you're better off remembering through through the tint of rose-colored glasses. Sadly, it really hasn't aged well.
@nimnio LOL, that's an interesting "vibe" to be getting based on how little I said. I'm fully aware what the Switch is and is not capable of, and I certainly don't expect it churn out 60 fps top tier graphics for me to be pleased. However, they've posted a bunch of screenshots in the article that were clearly taken on a PC, so I'm hoping people temper their expectations and don't expect it to look anything like those do. It's a very big, complex game engine, it's not likely to look very nice on the humble Switch.
I hope people manage their expectations here, this is going to run SO poorly on the Switch. To lock in an even halfway stable FPS, they're going to have to make this game look like a muddy mess.
Yikes, looks like the visuals have taken quite a hit to get it to play nice with the humble Switch. Obviously that was going to happen, but it's jarring when you've played it on a high-end PC with all the bells and whistles previously.
@Sourcecode I went into Picard thinking it was going to be trash, having slogged through Discovery just to see how much worse it could get. I was pleasantly surprised to see that season 1 of Picard was actually quite good and a bit of a return to form for the franchise. Disco, on the other hand, is flaming hot garbage all the way
This looks terrible, like an already low-budget mobile port that's taken "inspiration" from lots of other, more recognizable games and implemented NONE of it well. The horrible trailer certainly isn't helping it any, from bad narration to wonky looking handling characteristics, this just looks all bad.
@kobashi100 I think you need to reread my comment for clarity, I clearly stated that I was opposed to any and all erasures of history. Also, I clearly stated that people against censorship stand on both sides of the political spectrum and neglected to mention where I stand in that spectrum myself, why did you feel it necessary to speak for "people on the left?" I'm simply speaking on the issue in front of us, changing the dialogue of a game. Unfortunately, the issue of censorship should be a non-partisan issue, but it continually gets hijacked in the world of politics.
@nessisonett I personally don't think the issue of censorship should be bound to any political affiliation, many people who oppose censorship stand on opposite sides of the spectrum. Either way, the only reason it matters to me is I don't buy the idea of erasing things from the past. If anything, we can look back on it as a window into what once was and see just how much we've changed.
@PessitheMystic Why so much hate for the dude (aside from card speculation)? Genuinely curious, I don't know anything about him. Is he a colossal douche?
Just the music alone was worth the price of admission for the first entry. I'll sign up just for that, the fact that it's a shmup is just icing on the cake!
Something about this game really grabs me the right way, I love the Tim Burton style madness on display. I'll have this game one way or another, but if the Switch version doesn't look/run well, I'll play it on PC.
@Heavyarms55 My thoughts exactly! I do enjoy these special events, but they almost always have moderate to severe technical issues that come with them and end up rolling out "make up days" after the fact. We'll see if they can get this one right.
As someone not in the know, could anyone please tell me what exactly is so controversial about the story in Mother 3? Just reading the wikipedia page, I don't see anything that stands out.
@superderper This was the first thing I thought of too after watching the trailer, the soundtrack better BRING IT!!! A huge amount of the adrenaline rush from Crazy Taxi came from the stellar soundtrack.
@Mion18 I wouldn't let this come in the way of your purchasing decision. If they really did change the name due to legal pressure from Monster Energy, it's also quite likely that the settlement they reached with them to drop the case included not being able to publicly disclose the reason. Blame the lawyers and the legal system for allowing silly things like this to happen, not Ubisoft.
Poor performance is inexcusable when we're talking low-demand pixel graphics like these, I don't care how "underpowered" the Switch is. Games like this should hold a rock solid 60 fps no matter what, no excuses.
Wonderful game, I just finished it a couple months back on PC. However, I'm not sure how well they can translate the controls to gamepads and the provided screenshots are NOT promising. Frankly, it looks like a low-res, muddy mess on Switch. Pass.
@VmprHntrD Don't take it so hard, I doubt it was a "snub." Remember, this is a Nintendo fan site, not everyone here plays games on PC and I believe that includes the writers. If someone does a Google search of the title to see what platforms it's on, the very first hit is Steam, GoG doesn't show up until you scroll down the page a bit.
Looks interesting, I do enjoy a good puzzler. A search of the Apple App Store shows it's releasing there on the same day, but for $3.99. Seeing as how puzzlers usually work quite well with touchscreens, I think I'll save myself 11 bucks and play it on my iPhone instead, I just don't see the need to spend more than 3 times the price to play it on Switch.
