Fortnite's seventh season is approaching, and ahead of the reveal, they've apparently been sending postcards to gamers, seemingly at random, and sending DVD players to influencers. Weird stealth marketing is hardly new — remember the time Watch Dogs sent a bomb-like package to members of the media, and told them threateningly to "check their voicemail"? Yikes.
Anyway, this isn't quite as upsetting, at least — but it has freaked some people out a little bit, because they're not entirely sure how Epic got their addresses. What's more, the postcards reportedly have no sender, and no text to explain what they're for, so they might look to most people like spam.
On video game forum ResetEra, a few people have noted that they've received the postcards above despite having never played Fortnite, or even having an Epic Game Store account. Some people, conversely, are annoyed that they've been playing Fortnite for years, and have zero free postcards. So, what's going on?
One theory going around is that video game merch site iam8bit has given their addresses over to Epic (or, at least, whoever's handling this marketing campaign on behalf of Epic), or that their mailing list is part of a much larger aggregated "video game fans" list of addresses. This hasn't been confirmed, though.
Whatever the story behind the address mystery, there's one thing people generally agree on now: the teasers all seem to be pointing towards aliens coming to Fortnite (although earlier in the week, people were speculating that it was Xbox, or Coldplay). Since we've already heard the rumour that Samus Aran will be in the game soon, that would make sense.
There's a phone number on the postcards, which originates from Roswell, New Mexico. When you call the number, it plays a horrible noise (aliens?) and someone saying "there is something weird going on". But there's a lot more to it than that, apparently — with the use of fancy scientific methods like spectrograms to find hidden messages in the audio files, people have slowly begun to piece together what the postcards mean.
Some players have even done a wee bit of datamining to find out what the new game mechanics and secrets could be, including a UFO that can abduct people off the map, and some cool new effects.
Fortnite's latest teaser — which they tweeted earlier today — includes a reference to the Mistborn series of books, though we're not sure whether or not that ties in to the aliens thing. Honestly, we're finding it quite hard to keep track.
So... have you received a mysterious maybe-Fortnite, maybe-Coldplay postcard? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I received one of these last week.
It's Fortnite related? I'm disappointed. I thought it was going to be some sort of cool merch from iam8bit.
To the trash with you.
Watch Dogs actually did that? What level of crazy do you have to be to send something that looks like a bomb to important places?
Half Life 3 confirmed.

If this is true it should rightfully explode in their faces.
You have to give Epic credit for one thing, they know how to generate buzz and keep things interesting for Fortnite.
I got one of these, and from what I can tell from the rumblings on the discord server, it’s not yet confirmed to be fortnite. Bethesda did a promotion with iam8bit for e3 in the past, so it could possibly be an campaign for starfield. Additionally, I can confirm that the Mistborn series of books has nothing to do with aliens, though adding Kelsier to the game is a rather odd choice.
Yeah, Epic needs attention, we got it. Give them some attention guys.
I tore mine up
If it actually is Fortnite, I wish I would've gotten one, lol.
It is really shady, however, that people who've never even played Fortnite got those postcards. Hopefully there's some kind of reasonable explanation.
@rushiosan
Your profile picture of Pikanetta probably gains better attention.
If it was iam8bit; then did anyone give permission for them to share info with Epic, or did Epic give them a stack of postcards and told them to give 'em to whoever? This is messed up. Especially since some people receiving them apparently never played fortnite.
@Deadlyblack surprised you would throw them away when people would probably just pay a ton for it as a collectable.
Ubisoft apparently thought to themselves that sending mysterious boxes in the mail to random people and telling them to check their voicemail was a good idea. Guess getting a job in their marketing department is easy if they let lunatics work there.
MISTBORN WHAT
Had no idea what this was and just tossed it in the recycle bin. Also someone who's never played Fortnite, if iam8bit did this on Epic's behalf or gave them my address and info...nooooooot too happy about that.
Viral marketing for NO MAN'S SKY.
@RogueSpyke People are selling them on eBay for $70. Might want to have kept it for a while, just in case.
@spoonmanx It's Fortnite, so it's trash. It's also junk mail, so it's trash.
I ended up getting one of these postcards in the mail today.
They made the effort to send it to me despite being in the UK, they sent it over international mail just for a marketing stunt...
i got one and dont even play the game
I received one of these today. Never played Fortnite or used the Epic games store. However, I bought my Ori games box set from the iam8bit store, so maybe there has been some passing on of personal details.
I got one of these today, I have played maybe 10 rounds of fortnite in my life, a couple on switch when it launched and the rest on ps4 a year prior. I do find it weird how much they're spending on this, like a previous commentator i'm in the UK. My friend received one too, so they've probably sent loads out by airmail.
I've never played Fortnite and got one just now. It even used the wrong name for me.
@RupeeClock Did your UK one also have a UK phone number? The one I just recieved did. I have no idea what it is for.
@twadebarcelona
Hmm, oh yes, the number printed on the card is 441722638030.
My brother received the same card the same day too.
I did notice that the number printed on the card was different from the number on all of the American photos, but now that you point it out, it's obvious it's a phone number because of the +44 extension.
I'm not going to call the number, I already don't want anything to do with a Fortnite marketing stunt.
@RupeeClock I did call it when I realised it was a phone number, hoping to get clarification for what it was. Although how my details got in the hands of Fortnite people is news to me. They shouldn't have access to any of my details unless another company has broken GDPR laws.
@twadebarcelona
The current rumours I'm hearing is that previous customers of iam8bit are receiving these cards, it's something I should chase up because I have the same GDPR concerns.
I didn't sign up for receiving junk mail, after all.
I've just received one of these postcards today, and I'm someone who has never played Fortnite and has no interest in Fortnite. The iam8bit theory is plausible. I've ordered a few things from them in the last several years (several game soundtrack LPs, No Man's Sky art cards and Edith Finch game). My name and address on the postcard are in the exact same format as what's stored in my iam8bit account (one line of my address that I sometimes omit is missing on both the postcard and my iam8bit account).
Regarding the 441722638030 number, if you replace '44' with '0' then it's a UK phone number. And 01722 is the dialling code for Salisbury.
@RupeeClock same for me, I got and I’m in Aus, dunno why they sent it to me (i’ve never played Fortnite or made an epic games account)
@beatlesyoshi
I guess that Australia is only just receiving these post cards now?
Does it have its own unique phone number like the ones for the US and UK recipients?
@RupeeClock I’ll have to check later today
@RupeeClock here’s what’s on it
Horizontally: 61731861051
Vertically (at the bottom): 310,582
@beatlesyoshi
Yeah, that's an Australian phone number then. It starts with the Aus country code extension +61.
The postcards sent to US had a +1 extension number, and the UK postcards had +44.
It's NOT Fortnite. It was supposed to be announcing the new Rocksteady Suicide Squad Game, to coincide with the new James Gunn Suicide Squad sequel trailer, set to debut during E3 in June, but it was delayed. I'd watch for it in early July. The whole thing is based around a riddle. The Riddler is a suprise character in the new movie as well. Green/black is his thing. And "THEY'RE BACK" = The Squad.
Seems that mail to Germany is even slower than mail to Australia. Somebody from a forum I am on just got one of these too, the text was translated into German ("Sie kommen"), and it was seemingly a 0800-phone number on it (a number you can call free of charge here). The number seems to be discontinued, though, I got an error when trying to call it.
