Picture this: You're on a beach. You're digging a big hole, because that's the best thing to do on a beach, maybe second only to eating an ice cream or finding a reaaaaaally smooth rock. But suddenly, your neon-pink plastic spade hits something hard.
You claw it out of the wet, dark sand with your fingers, too excited to continue using the spade that you bought an hour ago from the beach shop for an exorbitant £25 price tag - and now you have, in your gritty, wet hands, something unexpected. What is that? An oil lamp? Buried beneath the Cromer sands? How unusual.
You clamber out of the hole, grabbing a nearby Harry Potter beach towel to clean it off, but the second the towel touches the tarnished brass - POOF! A genie comes out. You know it is a genie because you watched Aladdin three times in a row last weekend, and although this chap isn't blue or Robin Williams - in fact, he looks more like the guy at the ice cream stand with a slightly green tinge - you're about 90% sure he's one of those wish-granting types. He did come out of a lamp, after all.
So, congratulations: you have one wish! Not three, I know - we don't have all day - but one wish is still better than none wish. However, the genie has one main rule: you can only wish for the revival of a long-defunct video game series. It turns out that he's been sponsored by Blockbuster, and you don't have the heart to tell him that Blockbuster is dead, so you agree to his terms. This is my fantasy, don't ask questions.
Would you ask for a sequel to the 2010 murder-mystery ghost spelunking game, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, from the creator of the Ace Attorney series? I think I probably would. In fact, if I had a big lump of money, and didn't have to pay bills and keep my snack cupboard stocked up, I'd probably dump it all on Shu Takumi and tell him to go wild.
Then again, I'd be extremely excited to see another Mario and Luigi RPG, since the last one - Paper Jam - was not quite up to the series standard, and it came out six years ago. Six years!! In that time, we've managed to have an entire global pandemic, a Brexit, and that one year where all the celebrities died. In fact, are we sure that the Mario and Luigi games weren't preventing all of that? Maybe they were holding back a tidal wave of world events like a dam. There's only one way to be sure, and that's asking a fictional genie to force Nintendo to make another one. Obviously.
But perhaps you'd love Nintendo to acknowledge F-Zero or Star Fox, given that the former has been absent for 16+ years, and the latter was left to flounder on the Wii U? Maybe you'd really love to play Mother 3 in English on the Switch - or maybe you'd love a Mother 4? Perhaps you've been wondering for years what Kid Icarus is up to, and whether he's old enough now to just be called "Icarus" (YES WE KNOW HIS NAME IS PIT GO AWAY)?
However, the genie has another stipulation to the contract: "There can be no life without death," he says, ominously, "and if you want to revive a game series, you must in turn destroy one." Not destroy as in "never existed", of course - we're not about to mess with time paradoxes, thanks - but just ensure that it never gets any more sequels.
So, what will you tell the Genie of Cromer Beach? Please phrase your answer as a wish.
Emlyn Hughes International Soccer 2021 complete with 4K visuals and up to date rosters!
Can't say any franchise really springs to mind. If it were mid-2020 I would've answered Drawn to Life (they were always Nintendo exclusives) but that got a new, if not dissapointing, entry last year.
Kid Icarus is not a bad one though. I feel that it, if going further on the route Sakurai put it on with Uprising, could become a very succesfull and distinct series. A Zelda meets Shooter of sorts but with its own unique flavour.
I wish for Nintendo to higher all the unemployed programmers, artists, etc...and make them all.
The Pit Seagull thing made me laugh way too hard....
Edit: Yeah, we can call him Icarus now. I mean, it's been 9 years since Uprising (YES WE KNOW HIS NAME IS PIT).
Edit again: I wish that we could get a new Kid Icarus even when Sakurai says no, and I wish for a StarFox 2 port with less pixely graphics!
F-Zero absolutely loved X
The thing is, I don't really care about dead series too much, so I'll pick a game which is TECHICALLY still alive, but hasn't gotten a sequel in 10 years, that being Terraria, or Minecraft, either works. As for the franchise to die... Fifa. It deserves it.
Also yes, I do like eating an ice cream!
Kinda off topic but I would love for Nintendo to make Star Fox, F-Zero, and Metroid part of the same universe. They wouldn't necessarily need to cross them over but aspects of their universes would make a lot of sense tied together.
@Low_ink My franchise to die is FIFA as well...
and all of the Deluxe ports.
F-Zero, in particular ports of the original and X, the only two worth playing. Expanded with new tracks and features would be nice as well.
Metroid needs some love. Get Prime on here already!!
NFL Street series !
Otherwise, I'd like a new F-Zero, too 🙂
Oh I got some in my mind:
-Zombies ate my neighbors
-Metroid Prime, cause come on!
@BloodNinja I swear they are just holding that Metroid Prime trilogy until they release the next adventure, but seriously, they could just release now while they work on the new one.
I wish for Matthew Smith to make another Jet Set Willy. And the series to perish... Race With Ryan.
And a proper full size one like the N64 game, not the dumbed down 3DS game... Many of Nintendo's missing franchises only stopped selling well because of the substandard games they put out under those brands...
So nobody read the damn article, huh?
For me, I'd probably go for Golden Sun in exchange for Kirby (to keep in line with first party IPs and a somewhat equivalent franchise)
Also wouldn’t mind a sequel/port of Rustys Real Deal Baseball. A real gem of a game. Can’t we have two wishes?
To destroy: Mario Kart. I’m sorry I just don’t enjoy these games nearly as much as others seem to.
First I’d wish for three wishes. Genies should be able to arrange that dammit.
Then, my three wishes: lufia (please!), f-zero as a rpg-racer and mario & luigi.
A new Goemon game would be great.
I like your train of thoughts on these articles. It may not be news or reviews, but it is creative content I can certainly appreciate and not another "rumor" Switch Pro (insert eye roll) to generate cheap clicks.
I’d like to see a western studio get free reign over a start fox game
There are so many I wouldn't know where to start. Off the top of head:
Might and Magic (?)
Shaun White Snowboarding
Zak and Wiki
Stadium Events with Ring Fit utilized instead of the Power Pad. Get rid of... Kirby (like @Pineapple_Mohawk said, too). Never played one of those, so I personally wouldn’t miss it (although a lot of people would)
Magic Genie of the Lamp, I wish for:
For sacrifice, I offer:
Grant me....Air Zonk 3
Definitely Ghost Trick. We need a part deux. Such great memories playing that game.
I would love to see a new Startropics game. Maybe in the vein of Skyrim or BoTW.
Honestly, I’m not sure I’d want to play a Nintendo official translation of Mother 3. The fan translation is superb and for me, that’s the script I know and love.
A proper follow up to Star Fox 64. No gimmicky control schemes. No missions on foot. No chicken walker. No gyro copter. Just a straight forward, no bullsh*t high action rail shooter with some all-range sections.
JUST REMASTER CHIBI ROBO!!!
Destroy Mother (you can’t kill what isn’t alive)
Give me F-Zero
The genie suspects that many of you are not reading the actual article in which he said you get ONE wish 😒
Star Fox, Advance Wars and Eternal Darkness.
F-Zero, Mother, Advance Wars, Eternal Darkness, Wave Race.
New games for each.
Wave Race and 1080°. Would also love a Pilotwings more like the N64 version.
I wish Nintendo would revive Star Fox with an honest-to-goodness, truly ambitious title, as ambitious as the original was on SNES hardware; and, in turn, retire Mario Kart or Super Smash Brothers, because I'm not sure where else those franchises can possibly go that they haven't already.
That's never gonna happen, of course, because those are Nintendo's two most profitable franchises and everyone loves them. But genies also don't exist, so this is where I stand on my fantasy island.
Starfox would love a new one don't mind if they add on foot bits as long as they are good and it has a whole new story/villain etc.
Probably sacrifice Splatoon
And address the concerns people had with Star Fox on Wii U and re-release
Mach Rider in an open world GTA styled mission based post apocalyptic mad max setting. Included in the world would be death races in spirit of the original game.
That and Ice Climber 2.
@JeanPaul Exactly. They’re making millions, between game sales and amusement park. They can toss us a port for the love of everything that is holy.
Shinobi (like the ones on Genesis/MegaDrive)
Another World/Out of this World (Heart of the Alien)
Contra (not that new thing)
Dune 2/2000 (RTS)
Viewtiful Joe. Would love a revival & inclusion in smash!
^^^ NINTENDO PRO WRESTLING!
I'd body so many fools online w/ my Back Brain Kick!!
I preferred Holkham beach
@KateGray I'm not sure anyone is following the template you asked for. So I'll try to start.
For a Game series to return genie I shall ask for another Disaster Day of Crisis game please. I think a game like that on modern hardware could be epic.
Unfortunately Genie the game series to be discontinued shall have to be 3D mario games. There's plenty in the back catalogue to keep me happy plus I think nintendo are already in the process of doing that come the 31st. In fact I believe right now they're water boarding Luigi trying to see if he's hiding any of Mario's stuff.
@FlashmanHarry the genie appreciates you
Even a picture of Mother 3 gets me way too excited. I'd love a Switch release or Mother 4, but I'm also fine with nothing too. I have a translated copy for my GBA SP AGS 101.
F-Zero is probably at the top of my list. Star Fox is right behind it as the only stuff we got within the past decade was a remake on the 3DS and a reboot which was more or less just a meh remake with spotty controls. Mother is obviously a big one too for a lot of people.
A not-as-old dormant franchise I’d love to see return is Wii Sports. They can rebrand it however they like, but I do miss me those motion controlled sports.
But yes, very strange that F-Zero has been dormant since the GameCube. It's...perfect for these new HD systems. It'd look so great. HD Rumble would be great too.
I miss Prince of Persia, but there isn't much past that. I would love the dormant IPs brought back, but understand that is sometimes harder than it sounds.
I want FZero, but in a new reimagined way.
Next to the racing part i want an action Packed, falcon punch raging super hero punching trough buildings, exoding heads haha just kidding.
But something action packed, and still have the classic racing mode.
Punch-Out & Star Fox are the first two that come to mind. Mario Sports (Baseball/Basketball) would be fun too!
A boy and his Blob
I want Wave Race! Especially more than ever after recently discovering the gem Riptide GP Renegade for Switch.
Series to die? Anything Fire Emblem. Why? So the characters can stop taking up Smash fighter slots (now and the future). If said genie allowed me to pull a "Back to the Future" and 'erase from existence' that series what would those 8(!) character slots be??
Legacy of Kain / Soul Reaver
Splatter House (side scroller, not 3D)
Castlevania and Breath of Fire. Actually, as for Breath of Fire I'd settle for getting the PSP version of III ported over to the Switch.
Speedball is the series I want to make a long overdue comeback more than any other. It doesn't even need to be a sequel. Speedball 2:Brutal Deluxe - Deluxe would do.
I wanna see if Ninty does anything with Ice Climbers buttttt....
...speaking of revival, why does Camelot keep toying with us with Golden Sun??? ☠️☠️☠️ We waited 8 years after TLA to get Dawk Dawn back in 2010 and now we are over a decade past that. I know it was probably weird af tryna continue a story on from the original duo and it left a bit of a sour taste in comparison, but it's like they are intentionally testing our patience.
And it's not really a series on its own obv, but ughhhh I wish we could get another Pokémon Colosseum/XD sequel. :3
Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Starforce
Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem, because honestly there's really no chance Nintendo will ever do anything with it. I'd kill Ice Climbers or Mr. Game & Watch because they're not that popular, no one wants more games.
From Nintendo I’d love a new Wave Race, Pilotwings (a proper one not like the 3DS “demo” we got) and Advance Wars.
On PS5 I’d love a new Sly or Jak...
I just want a sequel to Omikron : The nomad soul
@OorWullie best game ever!
Mole Mania and Drill Dozer
@BloodNinja GX was phenomenal no?
Series to revive: Star Tropics. It was such an interesting premise with a unique atmosphere and fun (if dated) gameplay. I'd love to see it revived and since it's so obscure, it would be like having a new IP without having to come up with something new.
Series to die: does it have to be Nintendo? Because if not, I'd say Jewel Quest. There are already more of those games than the world needs. For a Nintendo series, I guess I'd say Paper Mario. It's not a franchise I care about and if it was gone, maybe all the controversy would die down.
Wave race & 1080 snowboarding!
Turrican, and there's still hope going off the Retro Gamer interview from November
I would wish for a followup to Bomberman Hero from the N64. And, as the article states (YOU NON-READERS....), I guess I'd choose Pilotwings to never have another game. Not an easy choice, but I'd want it to sting. T_T
@Mips I know others like it, but I wasn't a fan of the direction it went and grew bored of it.
@LastSonofTennessee If Startropics was given a gentle amount of modern QOL treatments, I would be all over that. It had such a great premise but I find it cumbersome to play in 2021. Too much hopping around, even for a ninja : D Fantastic music, though!
@KateGray did you even read the article ? The genie said that you need to destroy a game series in exchange for the wish 😜
Anyways mine would be a new donkey kong and they can destroy fitness boxing.
I would sacrifice Yakuza so that Toshihiro Nagoshi can go back to making F-Zero or Monkey Ball games (either series would be fine, genies choice).
I wish for ActRaiser and destroy Final Fantasy.
Hotel Dusk, Art Style, Wii Sports
F-Zero (Still no entry with online and HD, as well as the lack of good racers on Switch).
Advance Wars (Without any of the weeb romance crap from FE).
Wario Land/Wario World/WarioWare.
@BloodNinja Yeah, I'm not sure how a new game would play, since the movement is very clunky. My idea would be to have less jumping and more emphasis on combat. Maybe have it play like Link Between Worlds, but with a yo-yo instead of a sword.
Golden Sun was my all time favorite games on gba!
Please genie, make another Wave Race in exchange for Animal Crossing
I just really want to see them do a revival of their action sports games
1080 Snowboarding - this is easily my #1 most wanted title from them, but hopefully they make it more like the N64 original.
Waverace - seems criminal how this series has been ignored since the Gamecube era, especially considering how great it was on that platform.
Excitebike - Excitebike 64 proved how they could make a great arcade style motocross game with the series and it's a shame it hasn't been revisited since.
While they're at it I would also like to see a new F-Zero.
The one with the gray people with the jazzy music and the puzzles and such.
Master of Magic and HoMM. One of those was on a Nintendo console, so it counts?
Although with the way some recent reboots and revivals went I would be wary if the so called Genie is not in actuality a monkey paw.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat w/ Bongos. Honestly, and I am being quite serious here for a moment, it is the best Donkey Kong game ever made. Pounding and clapping for control is quite frankly genius. And if you disagree, I would bet you haven't played it...or not played it with the bongos...or maybe dead inside.
The game I would kill off is...hmm...well, anything by Hideo Kojima quite frankly, so take your pick*
*exept Zone of the Enders. That's another game that should come to Switch.
World really needs new Advance Wars. Especially considering that FeTh was developed by KT and IS must get their ***** together before they lose company's main series.
Pilotwings, in exchange for... Animal Crossing.
After a good bit of deliberation, it would absolutely have be a sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising
(You have to specify the "Uprising" part, or the genie will just give you a direct sequel to the NES game)
Surprised no one's mentioned F-Zero or Waverave? ...
Those... obviously Daytona, and I'd love to see an HD remaster of 1080° Avalanche.... and maybe SSX Tricky tricky tricky and Timesplitters 2!
1. Eternal Darkness
2. Wave Race
3. Star Fox
Mario and Luigi. Those games are great and I want more. I will destroy the Angry Birds series because they already ruined it.
As one of 5 people that actually read the article, I would use my wish to revive 2D Metroid and I would sacrifice Xenoblade Chronicles.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Is metroid dead?
Why does everyone want Animal Crossing to die?
All of them.
Star Fox, Wave Race, F Zero, Pilotwings, Eternal Darkness.
All of them.
Would love a new Demon's Crest in the style of the recent Ghosts 'n Goblins remake.
@LastSonofTennessee Yeah, some compromise like that would be great. I do like the puzzle aspect that the old game presented, though. I'm torn! LOL
@Tamale Well, we know 3D Metroid is a thing at least, maybe, but I meant more 2D Metroid, guess I should specify.
I'd use a Game genie code so the genie can create a bounty hunter game featuring Samus, Captain Falcon and The Star Fox crew for a mash up multiplayer game with third person shooting, Racing and Space fighting. Part way through Kirby rips a dimensional portal using a power star and merges Dreamland a a location and another portal to Hades, through which Pit, Palutena and Thanatos emerge.
Nintendo Universe, the spiritual sequel to Nintendo land.
If i had to pick one .
Starfox but as Starfox adventures. And sacrifice Smash or Splatoon.
The Xenosaga Trilogy
Phantasy Star but an actual offline RPG
The Front Mission tactical series
Revive Star Fox, but with something new not just another remake of the first game. And lose Arms (‘cos it’s low hanging fruit for a cull)
Always dreamed of an open world/universe Star Fox game, where you fly to planets and explore them, mix in some great action RPG elements and dog fights, I think you would be on to a winner.
I’ve imagined Nintendo could use Star Fox for their take on Eve Online. Call it ‘Star Fox Infinity’ and bundle in a months worth of NSO
I would love a Jet Set Willy remake, a 2d one.
Mario And Luigi
Mario vs Donkey Kong
Banjo And Kazooie
I just want to see Ghost Trick re-released on Switch. Then make a sequel to whatever you want.
I would love, love, love to see Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ported to Switch. Come on, Capcom. If it’s good enough for iOS, right?
@Dr_Corndog You and me both, brother!
@Muh-ario Mario Strikers!
A Jet Set Radio, Powerstone or Sonic Adventure sequel would be exciting... Wouldn't complain about new Donkey Kong, Ridge Racer, Super Monkey Ball or Advance Wars either.
What an interesting question... because it doesn’t stop us from an already dead IP just not coming back. Personally I would say a new F-zero or Excitebike. Hell if it’s my wish just gimme a Smash Kart with all the Nintendo Racing IP’s combined and we can kill off... Kid Icarus 😂 don’t think I’ve played a single game of that IP.
Exactly my thoughts!!
@AnnoyingFrenzy We did get Samus Returns I think less than 4 years ago.
Punch out, punch out and some more punch out please
Ohhh I didn't see the death part. I'll kill Smash lol even though I love it.
I would love to see a Star Fox game on the Switch. Never got a chance to try out the remake on Wii U.
It's literally been 18 years since the last home console F-ZERO game. The series has been dead longer than it was active. The 30th Anniversary came and went, and the only kind of "official" acknowledge we got was from a tweet by Sakurai
@Lalivero I've always wondered what a modern Ice Climbers game could look like. They could go full-blown action adventure and have it rival Tomb Raider and Uncharted but with a cartoony twist haha. More realistically, they could easily make a smaller eShop release or a battle royale. Would be really cool to see that franchise come back given the love for the characters in Smash Brothers!
K-1 World Grand Prix or K-1 Pocket GP !
Wave Race and Earthworm Jim come to mind. I could go for Rival Schools and Darkstalkers as well.
@Tamale That should tell you how low my faith is in them making another one lol
Lots of love for Star Fox here. As a fan of the underrated Star Fox Zero, I wish for Sin & Punishment. The game, not punishment for the sin of liking the latest Star Fox installment.
Splatterhouse, Two Crude Dudes, house of the dead...do they need to be Nintendo properties? Metroid, F-Zero, Star Fox.
Just Wave Race. I've such fond memories of the N64 version. The wave physics were awesome for the time. The sound, music and stage design was so iconic.
Personally, F-Zero, Wario Land, and Advance Wars are the three Nintendo franchises I want to come back most.
Sticking with the genie’s wishes, I’ll pick Wario Land because it seems like the least likely to come back out if those three. I’m also going to put a self imposed rule that I have to kill another Nintendo franchise. I pick Punch Out to kill because ARMS is way more fun.
If we’re talking any franchise from anyone: Revive Mega Man X, kill Bubsy because... come on... he got a new game before anything on my list.
We need an F-Zero Ultimate. One based on F-Zero X, complete with the track editor, and fully modernised. Then add the best of GX (many tracks were actually quite rubbish), the AX (arcade) tracks that most people never played, and the best from four mode 7 style ones from the SNES and GBA era. All should be split screen 4-player.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Rogue Squadron compilation, which should include the unreleased Wii game and the two Jedi Starfighter games from PS, and perhaps some bonus missions from the more recent films.
Similar to F-Zero Ultimate, a Star Fox Ultimate would be good too. I'd structure it like a regular Star Fox game, notably 64 on 3DS, and use missions mostly from previous games, enhanced of course. Also add a few new missions.
As for what I would destroy to have a new Splatterhouse, Two Crude Dudes, House of the Dead, Metroid and a Toon Link Zelda game. Well, I'm sorry, to all the people who love this stuff but- kill: Jackbox Party Pack, 1-2 Switch, all 'visual novels', all roguelikes made in unity or gamemaker, all endless runners, Splatoon, all bloated time wasting Ubisoft Assassins Creed style games, including Starlink, and all Roms from the 80s that cost more than $1. All games that run below 30fps most of the time. What to destroy is easy because the eshop is full of trash these days.
@Goofus YES! 👏 PLEASE! 👏
Honestly, SF64 is one my favorite games EVER. I don’t know how or why but it never gets old for me. I played the crap out of it when it came out, again on 3DS, and again now even on both original hardware and 3DS when I’m out mobile. It’s so addicting.Zero was really cool too but that control scheme was so awkward for me. I hate how I had to go first person and miss all those beautiful graphics and environments around me just to target specific things. What a waste!
I’d die if they rereleased Zero without all the (motion) control gimmicks.
[Opens up the escape hatch.]
[Puts on parachute.]
[Whispers]: CD-i Zelda and Mario.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Warriors of fate
Any (all?) of Nintendo's non-Mario Kart racers:
F-Zero, 1080, Diddy Kong Racing, ExciteBike/Truck
A remake of the kid icarus game that appeared on the 3ds would be cool.
Kirby's Dream Course
Give me a revival of the Aero the Acro-Bat games, in return you can take Call of Duty.
I want a Lizardcube treatment Shinobi.
F-Zero 100%. It’s beyond past due, and it would look great in HD.
If it doesn't happen, I will have some recommendation for it engraved on my tombstone.
Also, me and that genie would vibe on that beach.
Honestly, nothing. I want new and exciting games, not the same recycled series. New IPs are always welcome, and I'd rather have that than a half-baked remake or revival of a franchise that doesn't work well on modern hardware.
I wish, I wish, the magical video game genie of one wish would allow the sun to rise on the long dead series Lunar. (Obviously, the SEGA CD versions).
Oh mysterious magical video game genie of one wish, I would not be so sad to see the sun set on another RPG series named, Final Fantasy.
Saturday Night Slammasters
I don't know if it's old enough, but I really want a new entry in the Wario land series. As for the series to say goodbye to, I would gladly sacrifice F-Zero, as I never had a chance to play it and I can't imagine it being revived after so many years.
Advance wars, it's just so much nicer than all that romantic stuff in fire emblem if you just want to have a short game.
and 1080.. lov esome snowboard..
Final Fantasy Tactics!
To the many of you who clearly didn't read the whole article; you're really missing out! Some very creative writing, indeed. 😁
a golden axe 4 genesis style game
Please, give me Baiten Kaitos. The old one, a new one, all of them, I'll take anything! ANYTHING!
I'll humbly give you the Bubsy franchise in exchange (kill it with fire)
@rdm22 whispers what the f*** did you bring upon this cursed land ?!
This would not be my wish, but I’ve been wanting the revisit the old wizards and warriors (1 2 and 3) on NES.
And I would have loved for the last ninja 1-3 (C64) to be modernised.
Destroy pokemon or animal crossing because I’m a troll
Diddy Kong Racing
I think I'd have to agree with reviving Mario & Luigi, it would be heartbreaking for that series to be gone forever. And destroying FIFA is a good idea.
I would revive Kid Icarus
And kill Mario Kart.
I Love Kid Icarus but don't feel like having my family bugging me to play Mario Kart
I wish for ETERNAL DARKNESS to be revived.
I wish for Last of Us to die a horrible death, never to be seen again.
Should've ran a poll. This will be all over the place especially if it's not restricted to a Nintendo IP haha. The list could be endless as gamer wants are never satiated to completion.
However, off-top, if I had to make a Top 30 Wishlist of Series Revivals:
@Tamale Also I want WarioWare and I guess I have to pick something else to sacrifice, it will be, I know I will get killed for this, the Legend of Zelda series.
Because if i choose one, then i have to "kill" another title.
On the other hand, if i don't name any title, i could still hope to see sequels of both of them, someday.
