Big Sugar and developer Steel Mantis have announced that Valfaris is being treated to a sequel, but things are being mixed up this time around.
Valfaris: Mecha Therion, which is currently planned to launch in late 2022 on Switch and other platforms, will get rid of the original's action-platformer roots and head in a new, old-school, side-scrolling, shoot 'em up direction. Valfaris protagonist Therion returns, but this time he's piloting a metal colossus as he continues his pursuit of Lord Vroll. Here's a summary:
Therion returns as the hunt for Lord Vroll continues. Pilot an advanced machine of death and destruction in this explosive 2.5D side-scrolling shoot ‘em up, and sequel to the critically acclaimed Valfaris. Strap in and unleash mecha hell!
After escaping Valfaris, Therion’s hunt for the evil Lord Vroll has taken him across the galaxy. As the final, inevitable showdown looms, Therion harnesses the awesome combat ability of his secret weapon – Mecha Therion!
A formidable suit of weaponised metal, Mecha Therion can be equipped with an array of devastating firepower, including enemy eviscerating favourites such as Bringer of Mayhem, Skysplitter, and Therion’s trademark Hellwraith.
With multiple levels, a range of melee, ballistic, and destroyer class weapons, as well as weapon combos, upgrades, and add-ons, Valfaris: Mecha Therion will no doubt be hoping to build upon its predecessor. We enjoyed our time with Valfaris when it first launched on Switch in 2019, but felt that there was plenty of room for improvement – perhaps Mecha Therion will do just that?

This just reminds me that I own this game but have played like 05% of it. Too many amazing games, not enough time.
Oh this looks sick. I enjoyed the original Valfaris, but I find the extreme difficulty to be infuriating at times.
Kinda looks like a downgrade honestly. It seems more generic and less good looking. I'll wait for reviews.
I haven't played Valfaris, but recently remembered that I wanted to take a good, hard look at it, which I will do. I liked what I saw before. The genre change is interesting, and it looks good so far. There are some pitfalls that are common when doing a game like this with 3D, but the teaser is an indication they may have avoided those. I'll keep an eye on it.
I liked the original Valfaris and this is giving me some Einhander vibes. Dig it.
I really Valfaris, but this doesn't do much for me. Changing into a shooter like this kills the appeal of the first game, not to mention the graphical shift.
I'm getting it! Loved the first one! I trust them to not want to make a crappy game.
A shmup?? Hell yes now I'm interested
Damn right this looks amazing, day one i reckon, Getting Lords of thunder vibes as well.
Loved the original, but going shoot em up? Shame, not for me
I loved Valfaris, but I'm not too sure about this...
Just the music alone was worth the price of admission for the first entry. I'll sign up just for that, the fact that it's a shmup is just icing on the cake!
Psyched that it's a shmup, and bonus points for the play on Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion.
Good lord, this ROCKS!
My face is melting. Release now please?
Yep. Want.
Hoping we get a standard physical like the first.
