Re: Nintendo Website Suggests Multiple Switch Games Will Not Support Cloud Saves

Onosume

I expect anything with online functionality won't allow cloud saves. Large multiplayer games like Splatoon or games in which save data exploitation is rife like Pokémon I can understand. My worry is that single player games with online leaderboards like Mario Odyssey won't allow it when cloud saves are meant for large single player games so you don't lose your hundreds of hours of progress if something goes wrong. And if that's the case what's even the point of having cloud saves then?

Re: Guide: The Best Metroid Games - Every Metroid Game Ranked

Onosume

Prime followed by Super at the top for me. Both excellent games; just prefer 3D gameplay over 2D.

Out of those that people are discussing:

Hunters & Federation Force I have similar problems with in that I feel they are held back by the hardware - not enough graphical power and hand-cramping controls make them difficult to play. Hunters story had the weakest story of what we'd seen at the time but I liked that it opened out the Metroid Universe more. FF being a co-op game puts it towards the end of the list for me, I could only go so far solo before coming up against missions where it felt like you had to play in co-op and I'm not one for co-op games. My experience with FF stopped me picking up Zelda Tri Force Heroes.

Other M I'd put above these two. It was a good game to play (apart from the first person sections) and not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. The idea behind the story (of a corrupt Galactic Federation being as bad as the Space Pirates) did have potential but was let down by Sakamoto's awful writing.

Original Metroid and Metroid II especially have aged really badly and have been surpassed by their remakes.

Re: Rumour: Free-To-Play Switch Games Won't Be Impacted By Paid Online Service

Onosume

They did say use of the service will be opt-in on the developer's part, so F2P games escaping the paywall is something I'd been expecting.

They should also really take into account what type of connection the games use as well. Splatoon 2 for example is peer-to-peer so having it tied to the online service doesn't make sense when there are no servers to pay for.

Re: Fans Are Calling Out Nintendo And Camelot For "Lazy" Mario Tennis Aces

Onosume

I liked the demo so thought I'd give the game a shot (plus it was reviewing decently) but on getting the full game and looking at what was on offer I was immensely underwhelmed by it. At launch the tennis gameplay felt fine and multiplayer was fun, if challenging; yet outside of the online tournament mode and the single player adventure there's literally nothing to do. When NintendoLife called this is a deluxe port of Ultra Smash they weren't wrong. I'd rather fire up my Wii or GCN and play Mario Power Tennis to be honest.

Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Successor To The 3DS According To Its New President

Onosume

Sadly Nintendo has made it clear multiple times that the Switch is a home console you can just happen to take on the go - they don't see it as a handheld system at all. It's a fulfilment of the idea that they had with the GameCube's handle. Their ongoing commitment to 3DS has me fully believing there will be a new system in the DS/3DS line in the next couple of years. It'll have considerably more power than the 3DS and put it more in the smartphone space; mainly targeting kids and casual players.

Re: The Virtual Console Isn't Coming To Switch, Nintendo Confirms

Onosume

If it works in the same way as PS+ then I'll be fine with that, as long as the current account system is going to be carried forward to future systems. I already have all the games I want from VC over Wii, Wii U and 3DS anyway. While it would have been nice to compile them onto one system at least this saves me from buying them again.

On the other hand this works against those who haven't had access to VC-enabled systems, and as the stores close over time these things aren't going to be around forever.

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

Onosume

I'm seeing a lot of comparisons with Club Nintendo on here, which are valid - but the two are different in terms of what their goal was/is. Club Nintendo was "let's give our customers cool stuff for supporting us", MyNintendo is "how can we create an incentive for people to buy more products from us?" The latter is more in line with how reward programs are supposed to work as it benefits both parties, you get a game a little cheaper, Nintendo and other companies still get some money from your transaction.

If you've ever used certain Japan-based retailers, the updated gold points scheme will seem very familiar - a lot of Japanese retailers allow you to earn points on purchases at a specific rate, with 1 point = 1 yen.

So this is actually a good move as it gives gold points more use (a lot of people will have or not want games offered on the discounts) and allows people more choice as to what they spend their points on. The amount of points you have to earn for it to be worthwhile is ridiculous but that's how point systems work. Like on Japanese sites I find they are more a contribution/discount towards the final price as you don't have enough time to save up the full amount. And 1 year expiry is a typical time frame.

In short it isn't really anything new and Nintendo is just adopting the same system as many other Japanese retailers have been using for years.

Re: Bayonetta 2 On Switch Will Come With These Changes

Onosume

Definitely double-dipping and looking to replay them on the harder difficulty levels this time (particularly Bayo 2 as which I found easier than Bayo 1 on the equivalent of whatever 'normal' was). Having the costumes being easier to unlock is a nice touch for those who did buy the Wii U versions I think (as long as you have the amiibo to do it of course).

Re: Feature: Fulfilling A Lifelong Dream Of Attending The Tokyo Game Show

Onosume

I went to TGS in 2015. Really fun experience that made me get a couple of games I might not otherwise have bought. Also got to play the stage version of Love Live School Idol Festival which was fun.

Bit of advice if anyone does plan to go to a public day though, make sure you plan ahead and arrive early - tickets to play the most popular games go within minutes and waiting times can stretch into hours.

Re: Review: NBA 2K18 (Switch)

Onosume

Sounds like the game in general hit the "go gold" deadline with a load of stuff broken and they just had to run with it and fix it later. Shame to those buying on launch but that's the unfortunate way games are made these days.

Re: the not-scoring thing; imo it's completely fair. As is the current build does not give a fair representation of the game, so it is acceptable to wait until the game-breaking issues are fixed. There have been instances of games getting good reviews then being completely broken on release, releasing a lot of fan complaints on why it was rated so highly when it was fundamentally broken. Likewise if you give it a negative score that'll give the game an unfair bad rep that will stick around and potentially unfairly lose sales.

Re: Production Of The Standard-Sized New Nintendo 3DS Ends In Japan

Onosume

Having both a Japanese n3DS and a UK n3DSXL, the smaller device has a slightly better feel and the smaller screens produce a sharper image than the XL's, but the normal one has a very small and fiddly stylus. So both had pros and cons but it seems that the XLs were selling better which follows the global consumer trend for larger devices.

I think the faceplates idea was good, but they never really pushed it outside of Japan.

Re: FIFA 18 is Back to Being 'EA Sports FIFA' for Nintendo Switch

Onosume

This is probably going to be the only EA title on Switch.

On one hand it's a shame that Nintendo platforms are missing out on EA's library of games, but on the other I doubt many Switch owners will care. There's a lot of bad blood between EA, Nintendo and Nintendo fans over EA's practices and desertion of Nintendo platforms during the last generation. So I think that they wouldn't sell that well anyway.

I'd rather them come out and say they are not supporting Nintendo platforms rather than release farcial versions of games.

Re: Nintendo Switch UK Tour Confirmed, Starting in June

Onosume

If all they are showing is 1, 2 Switch and MK8 then probably a waste of time going along. Considering I have no interest in the former and own the latter.

I get why 1, 2 Switch is there as it's their system functionality demo, but they really needed something else, either ARMS, Splatoon 2 or even Breath of the Wild.

Re: EA Is Considering Bringing More Games to Nintendo Switch

Onosume

I'm not really a fan of EA, but I could see that new Need for Speed working on Switch, especially if it is dropping the online-only play as rumoured.

Other than that their games just simply don't align with people who buy Nintendo consoles. Those into the sports and shooters will have them on PS4/Xbox/PC and BioWare doesn't seem interested in doing Mass Effect ports for the Switch.

We'll see but I expect Fifa to bomb and EA to jump off Switch rather quickly.

Re: The Maps Offered In Splatoon 2 Will Rotate More Frequently

Onosume

I'd agree with taking it down to an hourly rotation. If you think about the global testfire and how that limits you to one hour, to me that feels the right amount of time to play on a set of 2 maps without it becoming boring. The 4 hours on Splatoon 1 was far too long.

Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?

Onosume

Does it need them? No, not really. I'm sure a lot of people would like them (I think the Crucnhyroll app on Wii U had a surprisingly high number of users), but it's not the focus of the system. It's a games machine and everyone has a device that can do everything else anyway. The only real issue is not being able to connect to public Wi-Fi networks that require a login (like hotels for example which use Arqiva). Twitch would be nice if they were serious about entering the eSports arena though.

To be honest I have a greater issue in the disposal of the Nintendo app infrastructure they had with the 3DS, particualrly shoving Mii Maker into the settings and disposing Miiverse.

Re: Project CARS 2 Creative Director Loves Nintendo Switch, But Don't Expect A Port

Onosume

As a player of racing sims, totally get where he is coming from. The Switch is a cool device but a racing sim that requires a lot of power to pull off and is focussed on the car fans with their expensive wheel peripherals just isn't going to take off on the Switch.

PS4 has GT, Xbox has Forza, but I've always seen Project Cars as a successor to the classic PC racing sims like rFactor and Simbin's games.

So racing sims, no, but an arcade racer would work (sadly a lot of the classic arcade racing games are past their heyday).
