It was pleasing back in January when EA appeared on stage at the major reveal of the Nintendo Switch and offered its backing to the system with a release of FIFA later in the year. There was speculation over whether it'd be a full entry in the series or an alternative, however, when it was listed with titles like 'FIFA for Nintendo Switch' as opposed to the more conventional FIFA 18.

EA slapped down rumours the game was using a 'last-gen' engine by stating that "it will be FIFA 18" and highlighting that it's the core development team working on a "custom version" for Switch. However, a press release for EA Play 2017 - a fan event during E3 - lists two distinct games: FIFA 18 and "EA SPORTS FIFA on the Nintendo Switch". Basically, we're back to the original announcement and official listing that places the Switch game as a separate entry in the series.

It's understandable that some fear a minimised, feature-poor version on Switch, as the Wii and 3DS got regular scaled back efforts; it was partly understandable due to the limitations of the systems, though EA notoriously published 'new' entries that were fundamentally just roster pack updates. Those releases were, aside from the name, very different from the main 'current-gen' entries.

Nevertheless, it's not time to march on EA HQ yet. There are indications that rival sports game NBA 2K18 could be fully featured on Switch, and let's also not rule out the fact EA may do something interesting and fun with the Switch version of FIFA, plugging it as an experience suited to the hardware.
