Re: Full Cross-Platform Play Now Live In Rocket League

NaviAndMii

It's not exactly 'full' cross-network support - you still can't play with friends on other platforms outside of a private lobby (no cross network parties, no playing competitive/casual online modes with friends on other platforms etc)

...but this is certainly a huge win and a great start - and when the Rocket ID update (allowing 'full' cross-network play) eventually rolls out, bringing with it unrestricted cross-play across all supported platforms - it'll be absolutely fantastic!

Having PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players all connected with each other (albeit, so far, still only in 'Beta' mode in a couple of games) is one of my favourite things about modern gaming - this is the kind of gaming future I always wanted to live in!

Welcome aboard, Sony - thanks for (belatedly) joining the party!

Re: Nintendo Reveals That Fortnite Was The Most-Played Switch Game Of 2018 In Europe

NaviAndMii

I wonder why they only decided to publish the Top 21? ..seems quite a random number!

I'm guessing that it was either originally planned to be a Top 20 list - but, since #21 was a first-party title (Mario Tennis Aces) they decided to extend the list to include that too - or #22 on the list is a game that's just too embarrassing to mention, so they felt it best just to stop at 21! (..Senran Kagura Reflexions, perhaps? ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Re: Talking Point: What's Next For Nintendo After Switch?

NaviAndMii

I can play at home...
I can play on the go...
I can play anytime, anywhere, with anyone...
...but I can't play whilst I'm ASLEEP! (not yet, anyway! )

Introducing: The Nintendo Dream Boy - play all the time, everywhere, with everyone!

Make it happen, Nintendo!

Re: Epic Games Launching Free Cross-Platform Online Services For Developers

NaviAndMii

Someone let Sony know! They seem to be having a few troubles over there, with cross-network between consoles available in just one game from the entire PS4 library

...I'm sure they're not just being stubborn, or intentionally anti-consumer, or anything like that - and that it's entirely coincidental that the one game they do allow cross-play in just so happens to be the most popular game on the planet - the sooner they can get with the times, the better it'll be for all of us! Re: Review: Football Manager 2019 Touch - A Truly Great Sports Sim That Still Feels Awkward On Switch

NaviAndMii

Great review - pretty much in-line with my experience with the game so far!

The positives:
More accessible than ever (the pre-set tactics, in particular)
Tactical and training overhaul
Some neat new touches in the match engine (Goal-line tech, VAR etc)
Fully licenced Bundesliga/2.Bundesliga

The negatives:
The UI needs further optimisation (eg. some sub-menu's don't seem to fit the screen correctly etc)
Can lag at times (more than FM18 Touch did, frustratingly)
Some issues with the last game haven't been addressed here (ie. Opposition Instructions)

Overall, they haven't 'reinvented the wheel' here - it feels very, very similar to FM18 Touch in a lot of ways - but, if you've struggled with the series in the past, this years' edition does make for a perfect entry point to jump back in with the addition of pre-built tactics etc...fans of the last game will no doubt appreciate the slight tweaks and adjustments here and there - but, if you're hoping for big sweeping changes, you'll be out of luck.

I'm enjoying it a lot - and some of the slight issues I've experienced will hopefully be ironed out in future patches etc (it's not broken or anything, just slightly sub-optimal in places) ..it's certainly an improvement over the last one - especially with the inclusion of the Bundesliga - but it's more of a small (and welcome) step than a giant leap!

8/10 seems about right to me

Re: Surprise! Football Manager 2019 Touch Has Just Launched On Nintendo Switch

NaviAndMii

@gcunit Yeah - I feel that there may be a little bit of Switch Tax-ery going on I'm afraid!

So far, I've seen video's for the latest versions of FM Touch on both Steam and iOS - the versions are all very similar - but the Steam version seems have a couple of extra QoL features which give you ever-so-slightly more control over your team, has additional 'cross-save' functionality (with PC) plus an extra 'Versus' mode as well...so that one seems to be the most fully-featured package for the Touch version of the game - yet is cheaper than the Switch release!

Overall, if the Switch version is someones only option, ยฃ30 is still pretty good value for money - having sunk 395 hours+ into last years' release, I certainly got plenty of 'bang for my buck!' ..but it does seem to be missing a couple of (fairly minor) features available in the Steam release so, if that one's an option too, you might be better to go with that instead

I will say that, once I got used to it, the controller functionality made navigating menu's a breeze in FM18 Touch - I ended up barely using the touchscreen at all (despite mainly playing in Handheld mode) which is a credit to how well they were implemented...not sure it was worth paying a few pounds extra for, but it is a nice addition which I don't think is available in the Steam/iOS versions - and there was some intangible feeling having last years' game on Switch which just 'felt right' somehow!

...but, yeah, I'm sure having the game on tablet feels just as good in many ways - and if you're getting a fuller package at a cheaper price, I could hardly blame someone for considering that to be the way to go instead

Re: Surprise! Football Manager 2019 Touch Has Just Launched On Nintendo Switch

NaviAndMii

I just want to be able to select default Opposition Instructions so that I don't have to manually set them up at the start of every single match...and I'd be willing to pay ยฃ30 for the privilege!

I spent over 395 hours in FM18 Touch on Switch - had a ton of fun with it (great value for money too!) ..but if I ever see another in-match Oppositions Instruction's screen again, it'll be a day too soon! ๐Ÿ˜‚

The improvements and new features for FM19 Touch certainly look nice! The tactics and training systems seem much improved - and it's especially great to see the Bundesliga (and 2.Bundesliga) officially licenced in the game! ..if the Opposition Instructions can be pre-set, I'll probably give this a download this evening!

Re: Nintendo Embraces Opportunity To Share New Games At E3 2019 As Sony Opts Out

NaviAndMii

@NEStalgia Haha! Yeah, I'm only assuming that there's some kind of strategy behind the move...but, I must admit, I'm struggling to see the logic at the moment!

My only guesses are that:
a) They're planning to hold their own event on the eve of E3 - in an attempt to get out ahead of the curve and dominate the headlines early - in which, they'll reveal their next-gen hardware and hope to just blow everything else out of the water...
or b) They're planning to hold an event of their own AFTER E3, giving them a chance to assess their competition and perhaps adjust their next-gen strategy accordingly (ie. to avoid the potential of Xbox Scarlet drastically undercutting them in price or something like that?)

Some analysts seem to be suggesting that the next generation of hardware could be the last - which I find a little hard to believe, if I'm honest - but, since Sony's gaming wing seems to pretty much prop up their entire business, there's undoubtedly pressure on them to get this next step right (or, at least, not totally balls it up like they did with the PS3!)

As a gaming fan though, I always look forward to E3 each year - and even though, as you say, it's not quite what it used to be as an event, it still one of those things I mark down on my calendar early - so news of Sony's non-attendance is a big disappointment...

They had the opportunity to have our undivided attention for an hour-or-so - and that of millions of fans/potential customers across the globe - so I can't help but feel that they're taking a big risk here...we'll have to see if it pays off for them!

(...Xbox's Phil Spencer has been planning for this transition to next-gen since day 1 though - feels like they'll be providing some much sterner competition this time around - will be super-interesting to see how it all plays out next year!)

Re: Nintendo Embraces Opportunity To Share New Games At E3 2019 As Sony Opts Out

NaviAndMii

I feel like Sony have already shown their hand for the rest of the generation - and after their mediocre (at best) showing at E3 2018, if they'd have had nothing new to show, E3 2019 could've been pretty embarrassing for them...

...of course, if they'd have used the event to show off their next-gen hardware, they'd have been able to create more of a buzz - but I guess they feel, for some reason, that it'd be better to keep it up their sleeves for a later event

It really does suck that they won't be attending though - gamers across the world (myself included) look forward to this event perhaps more than any other - and for one of the major players to skip it is a real disappointment...

...you'd have liked to have thought that they'd have at least turned up to put on a bit of a show 'for the players' - but of course, this is Sony, so for corporate strategy to take precedence over fan demand is only to be expected, unfortunately

Re: EA Will Add Usain Bolt To FIFA 19 If He Can Secure A Professional Contract

NaviAndMii

@OorWullie I think that Central Coast Mariners requesting that the A-League contribute to his wages could actually be a good sign - the League has a 'marquee player' scheme which allows teams to sign star names on much higher wages if its deemed that the signing would sufficiently raise the profile of the competition (which should benefit all)

If the request has been made, it's a sign that the club would be interested in adding him as a 'marquee' player - the League now just has to decide whether they believe that the added expense would be worth the outlay.

In the past, the A-League has contributed substantially to the wages of other big name stars - I remember Alessandro Del Piero, for example, joining Sydney FC as a 'marquee' signing, with all of their matches (both home and away) seeing bumper attendances as a result (with an increase in interest, viewing figures and merchandise sales too, I'd imagine) ..unlike Del Piero, of course, Bolt has no footballing pedigree to speak of - so the League may be a little wary that his signing could end up being a rather costly 'flash in the pan' gimmick - but Bolt's arrival has certainly generated a lot of interest (and CCM's attendances and gate receipts have been through the roof) so he's got a lot going for him in that regard (..got my fingers crossed for him!)

Personally, I think he could make it to a decent level. Pace is a huge weapon - and he's certainly got bags of that! ..and I look at players like Wolves' ยฃ16m record signing Adama Traore - who's truly rapid, but perhaps a little lacking in technique - and see no reason why Bolt couldn't offer something similar for a team (at least)

I so hope that he gets a shot somewhere - absolute legend!

Re: Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimรฉ On Why The Switch Uses A Mobile App For Voice Chat

NaviAndMii

I don't find the idea of a voice chat app to be all that bad of an idea...in principle.

It means that the Switch's (relatively limited) power can be reserved (almost) solely for the games...that part makes sense to me - I'm on board.

...but the issue is that the functionality of the app is just WAY too limited.

No third-party games are supported...
You can't just start a general 'party' and have the freedom to voice chat with your friends in any game you want...
You can't message your friends, or even simply invite them to your game through the app...

I could buy in to the concept if it was better executed...but, as it is currently, I think that it provides a woefully sub-standard experience and so have limited use for it (aside from SplatNet 2, which is awesome!)

Re: Cities: Skylines - A SimCity Successor That Struggles To Shine On Switch

NaviAndMii

I'm not usually one to sit down and watch extended Let's Play's on YouTube (etc) ..but, curious about how this game would make the transition to Switch, I found some recent streams of the Switch version of Cities Skylines (from a guy who goes by the name of Some Fairlife Milk) - and it looked great!

No noticeable hitching or stuttering really (aside from a brief pause when auto-saving) - deep and complex gameplay - endless replayability...I mean, aside from the common complaints (no natural disasters, no 'rival' cities etc) it looks to be a very good port of a highly-regarded game!

I'm quite staggered that anyone could review it so poorly based on the footage I've seen...I'd advise people (as with all reviews) just to keep in mind that this is just one persons opinion - and may not be wholly reflective of how YOU may view it - it honestly looks far better than the 5/10 score may suggest (from what I've seen of it, at least)

Re: Players Have Had Enough Of Fortnite's "Unplayable" State On Switch, Send Plea To Epic Games

NaviAndMii

Yeah, seems like most complaints are centred around the current state of the Switch and Xbox One versions of the game - I've never played the game on Xbox One myself, but the Switch version keeps getting worse with each patch...there's long been a problem of textures failing to load properly (especially in 'popular' places like Tilted Towers) - but the lag/frame drops that have started to creep in are beyond painful - and even 'QoL improvements', like motion controls, have been damaged beyond reasonable use.

For the time being, they should focus less on map changes/item additions etc and more on bringing the game up to a playable standard on all platforms...otherwise the bubble may burst.

Re: Did Luigi's 'Death' In Smash Bros. Ultimate Secretly Hint At A New Single-Player Campaign?

NaviAndMii

People seem to be overlooking the fact that that section of the menu may not have been simply blurred out, but covered with an unrelated blurry image instead.

The idea that - from the trailer and 'unblurring' the image - this could point to a new, as-yet-unannounced 'Spirits' mode is a fairly convincing one...but there are too many unknown variables to take this speculation with any more than a pinch of salt at the moment.

As someone who has dabbled in Photoshop in the past, the best way to cover up something you don't want people to see is to add an image as a layer in the foreground to completely block it out (rather than simply blur/pixelate the area) ..it's just worth baring in mind that Nintendo could've done either here - 'Spirits' may be a bit of tricksy misdirection instead!

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct?

NaviAndMii

I have to admit, I loved the whole presentation from start to finish, but my jaw hit the floor when I saw that 'Stage Morph' feature - what a great addition that promises to be!

That tantalising tease of the yet-to-be-announced mode on the main title menu sure has my mouth-watering too! ..not sure how much to read in to the apparent revelation that the mode will be named 'Spirits' - Nintendo may not have simply blurred that section out, but covered it with a blurred template for a bit of 'misdirection' instead - but, at this point, the idea that there's yet more to be revealed is borderline unbelievable!

Loved it!

Re: Review: Minit (Switch eShop)

NaviAndMii

Not sure I'll end up getting this one (sounds pretty fun - but hearing that there's only 2-4 hours of content in the game kind of put me off, unfortunately) ..but I'm glad I read the review - made for a very pleasant read - my compliments to the writer!

Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Micro SD Cards

NaviAndMii

"Brands also offer "premium" versions of their products, for example is the SanDisk "Ultra" range which are typically their fastest cards.

We'd recommend going for one of the premium offerings if you can, but it shouldn't make a huge difference for the average user."

Poor advice. Digital Foundry found that using these 'premium' cards with the Switch offers no performance benefit, so people would be better off buying a larger capacity card than a 'faster' one.

...if your budget will only stretch so far, don't waste your hard earned yen on a 'premium' card if you only intend to use it with the Switch - buy a standard card instead with as big a capacity as you can afford.

Re: Soapbox: Fortnite's Motion Controls Leave a Lot to Be Desired

NaviAndMii

@loconathan Yeah, I use a very low sensitivity setting too (0.30, 0.30, 0.15 IIRC) and I much prefer that to not having it at all

I certainly think that Alex made some valid points in the video - and, like him, I prefer the way that they are implemented in Splatoon 2...but I'm pretty happy with the way I have it set up now - and any further improvements can only add to these already solid foundations
