Re: Random: Modders Turn GoldenEye 007 Into Goldfinger 64

NaviAndMii

Not usually a fan of ROMs/mods - but for GoldenEye I'll make an exception! The complex rights situation surrounding the original means that it's unlikely to ever hit consoles again (in an official capacity) - this is a great way of keeping a true classic alive...and dusting it with a fresh new skin only adds to that! Bravo! Great job!

@Forde999 @Damo Yeah, apologies - I should've paid more attention to the "not including various games under the company's previous guises" part! (edited my post accordingly! ) Impressive list even without the DMA games!

@luke88 Me and you both! Mario Odyssey kind of reminds me of that game, with its 'take over other characters' mechanic...definitely stole borrowed the idea off of SS:SV!

Actually quite a generous score from what I've read - the devs might use this for their promotional material!

"If you are someone who can look past technical hurdles there may be something worth divining here - 4/10 - Nintendo Life!"

@James_mussell98 It's an unwritten rule of modern gaming: if you port a game to a 'next gen' console - you have to call it the 'Definitive/Deluxe/Complete/Legendary/Super-duper/Definitely-not-just-a-copy-and-paste' Edition...otherwise people might just think that it's the exact same game that they bought a few years ago or something unthinkable like that!

...says me with my copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe & Overcooked! Special Edition - and Skyrim on my wishlist! :/

Re: RiME Producer Explains Why The Switch Port Is Coming So Much Later

NaviAndMii

@justin233 Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-achievements or anything - I don't think that they really add much of any real significance to the majority of games (mainly due to unimaginative developer integration) - but, for the most part, they're pretty harmless...and the well thought out ones can add extra layers and incentives to games which are pretty neat.

The main reason that I think that Nintendo should consider implementing them on a system level is that they seem to encourage brand loyalty - which can only be good for them - and I'd also be curious to see how Nintendo would approach adding an achievement system with a 'typically Nintendo' twist, just to see how they'd spin it

...equally though, I do think that some people exaggerate their importance a touch - they're nice, they're neat, they're harmless, they can be addictive - but games were perfectly playable before achievements existed & they still are today.

I wouldn't be against them being added at system level at all - but I'll always get far more enjoyment from the quality games and software than whatever the OS offers...

@justin233 "Achievements always appreciated. Never understood why Nintendo didn't adopt an achievement system. It was my favorite part of having a PS3."

You didn't like the PS3 very much then, huh? ..let me guess - your favourite thing about the PS4 is the HDMI cable??! It's all about the games, dude - always - surely?!?!

Re: Analysts Expect Nintendo Switch Hybrid to End 'Two-Punch Strategy'

NaviAndMii

@StuTwo Yeah, all true ..so long as any of the 'shaved' components don't cause compatibility issues with games, a 'Switch Lite' could definitely work - especially for kids and casuals..

I just struggle to imagine how they'd shave off $100-$150 off of each unit to actually make it cost effective - whilst still keeping its identity as a 'Switch'...but, hey, they've got far cleverer people than me working for them - so maybe they can figure something out! ..it just wouldn't surprise me to see the 3DS range still kicking about into 2019 (perhaps beyond?) - when the cost of each Switch component has dropped, meaning any 'Switch Lite' would have less features shaved from it - cheap enough to fill the 3DS's place in the market, good enough to be able to take the Switch name.

@mattmayatt Fair points Any budget model Switch would still have to retain that Switch identity though - my guess is that the 3DS will continue to run in to early 2019, at which point they should be able to make a mini Switch that still retains a lot of what the Switch has, but at a much reduced manufacturing price...Nintendo have 3DS games coming out next year, they'd be able to still sell a lot of them next Christmas - then by 2019 component prices for Switch parts will have fallen to a point where, with a bit of shaving and some design ingenuity, they can replace the 3DS with a budget Switch that retains much of what makes a Switch a Switch (if you catch my drift!)

Re: Analysts Expect Nintendo Switch Hybrid to End 'Two-Punch Strategy'

NaviAndMii

@mattmayatt Yes, but the cost of manufacturing a Switch is so high that Nintendo barely make any profit from each unit sold - so, for a cheaper, mid-tier 'Switch Mini' option to come in at roughly half the price of the Switch (to fill the DS's place in the market), they'd have to also cut the manufacturing costs in half for them to make it worthwhile...that simply won't happen any time soon - sure, the cost of each component will drop slowly over time, but to those sorts of levels? We're way off..

They could cut some components out altogether (the IR camera perhaps?) to cut costs, but that could cause software compatibility issues down the line which I'm sure that Nintendo will be keen to avoid...I'm not saying that a 'Switch Mini' won't happen eventually, but it wouldn't surprise me if the 3DS is still kicking about going in to 2019 (and perhaps beyond?)

Re: Analysts Expect Nintendo Switch Hybrid to End 'Two-Punch Strategy'

NaviAndMii

I highly doubt that that's true...

The Switch is Nintendo's 'premium' home console - the expensive option

The 3DS/2DS represent cheaper, mid-tier options

Mobile, because you can buy the games on a device that you already own (meaning that you don't have to buy any new hardware), represents the cheapest option - reaching the widest possible audience..

Not everyone can afford a $300 console - so having a cheaper, ≈$150 alternative has worked really well for Nintendo over the years...people have been picking up 3DS's and 2DS's like hot cakes! They totally dominate this corner of the market, so what logic would there be in neglecting it? The only possible option would be for them to replace the 3DS/2DS with some kind of ≈$150 'Switch Mini', but I think that's some way off...each Switch costs about ≈$250 to manufacture (and they can't make them fast enough!), how are they going to cut $100 from the cost to make it cheap enough to replace the 3DS? I can't see it happening any time soon...

I think that the 3DS/2DS are here to stay until they can figure out a cost effective way to replace it and keep control of the lucrative 'mid-tier' market...
