Yeah like most, I think the Switch will pass the Wii by the end of Q4. After that it really is anybodies guess. Will Nintendo stick with the Switch or will they look to slowly move onto the next iteration?
We've already had a handheld specific model. The OLED model is cool enough but it's not enough to get me to to upgrade. A 4K version (even just upscaling) however would have been, could it still come?
Otherwise without any new hardware revisions you are really just depending on the games to bring in new users rather than repeat purchasers.
We know BOTW2 is coming but there are plenty of big hitters Nintendo may choose to hold off on now until 'Switch 2' or whatever comes next.
A new Mario Kart, new 3D Mario, Metroid Prime 4, Fire Emblem I'm sure are all in the works but where they end up will probably dictate how much further the Switch can go.
I just don't think there's enough here to justify the upgrade for already existing owners. In the past I've bought almost all of Nintendo's console revisions but I can't see myself getting this unless there is a significant drop in price. I'd rather just wait and see what else we might get in the future.
I do think Nintendo have made a bit of an uncharactaristic mistake with this revision. There needed to be a hook like 4k upscaling and then I would have been in, the screen on its own I just don't think is enough of an improvement.
@nukatha it's a trade off though isn't it. It's a marginal size increase per pixel, I would suggest not noticeable to human eye. However the quality of the screen and the brightness should counter that anyway. Whether a different set of labo lenses will be needed is another matter though.
Can't help but feel like Nintendo have missed a trick here.
Better screen, check Better audio, check Better kickstand, check Better battery life, check (although they had already revised this)
That's all nice but they could have:
Increased the onboard storage to at least 128GB if not 256GB Enabled Bluetooth headphones (or even USB-C) Boosted the processor and or RAM even if only to give existing games a basic performance boost Issued a new left joy-con with a Dpad
I think these collaborations Nintendo are doing with other studios are really positive. Mercury steam and Wayforward just to name two. Ubisoft is the other obvious big one. It will be interesting to see who else they might be working with in future.
Decent E3 showing, I'm not sure what else could realistically have been shown maybe some Metroid 4 or Bayo 3? There was a bit of something for everyone in that.
Like many others this is the one I was waiting for, I think I can finally consign my Wii U to the attic once this comes out.
There's the odd couple of games like Wind Waker HD and Xeno X but I think they will make their way to Switch soon enough. I think we'll see Wind Waker before the year is out, they just wouldn't announce it yet and have it overshadow Skyward Sword.
Interesting, I would have prefered a 3D outing if it's the Odyssey team though. They will have to do something quite special to make the game markedly different from the Retro developed games.
Switch Lite released 2.5 years into the Switches lifetime and it did exactly what it was mean to do in terms of a filling a gap for those only interested in the handheld aspect of the console. 2 years on from that would seem like a realistic timeframe to do the same thing again, except capitalise on those players more interested in the 'at home' experience. I see the Switch Pro coming around September time with a big push for whatever the winter releases might be to carry Switch into 2022.
It'll happen eventually, look how long is took for Mother 1 to make it to the west. I do feel like we may be having this conversation again in a few years time though.
Yes I would be interested but realistically, as far as Nintendo home consoles go we could only really get an N64 classic at a relatively reasonable price point. I wouldn't be particularly interested in a Gameboy Classic but I would definitely be interested in a GBA classic which should be relatively easy to produce.
I think a Microsoft/Nintendo partnership is almost inevitable at some point. Microsoft is and always will be a complete irrelevance in Japan, teaming up with Nintendo would be a huge benefit to them. The benefits to Nintendo would be attracting a more 'hardcore audience' making them a more well rounded company in the west. Particularly with Microsoft controlling Bethesda now, if they cut off those releases to Sony platforms but supported Nintendo it could be a very interesting end to this generation.
I might give this a go again once this is out. I trued it when it first released but the technical limitations just didn't make for an enjoyable experience. This might change that
Never been able to take to Monster Hunter games, much in the same way I haven't been able to take to Animal Crossing. I want to like them but it just doesn't seem to click with me, trying to decide whether to give it another go or not.
My guess is if EA really had plans to support Switch with Frostbite games they would have invested in it a year or two ago. Whether this game was a test for them I'm nit sure but it kind of looks like Popcap have gone on their own with this one
@johnvboy when I say ruined the momentum I mean the development momentum not the sales momentum (yet), but obviously a stunted development momentum will affect sales momentum eventually. We can only hope that Nintendo adjusted to home working fairly quickly and that they were able to keep all of their development projects going.
The key for Nintendo is going to be keeping this momentum going into the next year and beyond. If you look at the Wii on that graph you can see how it was doing brilliantly up until around month 50 so 4 years in but then it started to tail off quite sharply in year 5, whereas the PS1 and PS2 continued climbing at the same point in their lifetimes.
In March Monster Hunter will no doubt be a big success particularly in Japan, but I do worry that there isn't really a lot on the slate for the rest of this year, but we are still early on to be fair.
From Nintendo, we have Super Mario 3D World due next week and Pokemenon Snap in April which might be a surprise hit.
After that though? Maybe BOTW2 by the end of the year? I'd love to see the rumoured Zelda remasters ported like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword would be brilliant.
What else could there be though and will Covid have ruined the momentum?
Microsoff buying Sega imo is the worst option for Sega fans, I just don't see them using the IP correctly at all, look at Rare for instance. I do however think it's the most likely, Microsoft are pointless in Japan and this could be the deal that sees them make great strides over there.
Nintendo won't stump up the cash for such a deal, it just isn't how they operate.
Tencent wouln't be out of the realm of possibility though and I'm not sure how I would feel about that one.
@Bolt_Strike you could argue that of Sonic Adventure 2 perhaps, although I found the different platforming elements provided by the different characters interesting. However, the same argument doesn't apply to Sonic Adventure 1, the chao garden was an okay side quest but that was really the only diversion.
@Bolt_Strike for its time Sonic Adventure was a very good game, it perhaps hasn't stood the test of time as well as other 3d platformers but at the time of its release for the Dreamcast it was a system seller.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for Gamecube in many ways was even better as it stripped out some of the additional faff.
Both deserve their place in a list of Naka's great games.
Realistically, the Switch is a fine console as it is. Everyone knows its place in terms of capabilities and most studios are still falling over themselves to support it anyway.
In an ideal world there are many upgrades you could make however a realistic wishlist would probably be:
OLED screen up to 1080p in handheld Improved Battery Improved onboard storage capacity Dpad (already have the Hori one but an official one would be nice)
DLSS 4k in docked Some sort of CPU/GPU upgrade for devs to use as a boost option
All of those would be things that wouldn't exclude the current userbase from future game releases which I think would be a mistake.
Really cool graphic, I'm not sure why you wouldn't go a bit further back to fit in the SNES and NES years and then it would be a fairly complete history of Nintendo consoles. Either way though, its amazing to think of the success that the Wii and DS had combined. The fact that the Switch is even threatening to get close to that is a minor miracle.
@N8tiveT3ch I don't see this as cutting corners at all, I bet in general they aren't really even aware of the issue. It could easily be resolved with a patch though which I don't think is beyond the realm of possibility the feedback on social media highlights it

Definitely Europe, the design and colour scheme just suit the genre of game. Clean design but gives an idea of the content in the game.
Re: F-Zero Isn't Dead - It's Just Sleeping, Says Nintendo Legend Takaya Imamura
Its crazy to think of all the franchises Nintendo have which are lying dormant:
Gamecube era and further back:
FZero
Waverace
1080
Mother
There are the furthest back and the ones you tend to here the most online talk about. But then you also have more recent dormant franchises like:
Wii/DS/3DS era
Kid Icarus
Excite (Bike/Trucks/Bots)
Pilotwings
Another Code
Punch Out
Wars series
Golden Sun
All could be brought back in interesting ways

Re: Video: 13 Great Wii U Games Still Not on Switch
Of that list, I'd say:
Xenoblade X
LOZ Windwaker HD
LOZ Twilight Princess
Fatal Frame
Have a realistic chance of a Switch release, the others not so much:
Starfox would need completely rebuilding, so might as well just make a new game.
NES/SNES remix probably don't have a place with the NES and SNES services of Switch.
Paper Mario, Kirkby and Yoshi have all had follow ups released on Switch so unlikely.
Wii Sports has had its day I think. There could be a new version some point down the line but I think that is some way off and likely not a port.
Skyward Sword is the one that I think is possibly more likely than any of those though mentioned above though (obviously wii not wii u).
