When Fortnite landed on Nintendo Switch back in the ancient times of June 2018, it was a natural marriage of the most played video game in the world and the increasingly popular system. To be fair to Epic Games the Switch version has kept pace with all the other editions in terms of content, and evidently effort is still being made to give Nintendo players the best experience possible.
Somewhat out of the blue, Epic Games today confirmed that an update is rolling out to boost the resolution, and also deliver a more stable and reliable 30fps. In terms of the resolution boost, the table below gives an idea of what to expect.
Expected Resolutions | Before | After |
Handheld | 1000x560 | 1170x660 |
Docked | 1390x780 | 1560x880 |
Meanwhile there's some content coming for those signed up in the 'Fortnite Crew':
On March 31 at approximately 5 p.m. PT, active Fortnite Crew members will receive a Crew Pack featuring the Alli Outfit, the Squee Back Bling, the picked clean Skellyfish Pickaxe, the paw-plentiful Cat’s Paw Wrap and the Catwalk Loading Screen. The cat-like Alli is Lynx’s once-estranged sister who brings her own sense of feline fashion to the game, so suit up for some hair-raising hijinks.
It's good to see Fortnite being given a technical boost on Switch, as undoubtedly there's still a decent number of players jumping in. Heck, they're still doing promotions like official Joy-Con controllers, so this is a battle royale that's clearly still doing the business; just be sure to enjoy those extra pixels.

Finally some kinda update for performance D:
OH BOY OH BOY did this game need it to.
Well good for them! I wonder if this evens out the playing field for cross play. Not that I would really care either way though.
Nice. How's the frame rate right now?
I'm stoked, despite this was needed forever ago. Glad it's at least here. Can't wait to compare the differences tomorrow.
Have to wonder why it has taken so long.
It at least shows the game is popular on Switch with the continued support which is good to see (although no interest in the game myself).
I stick to my PS4 for Fortnite but it’s nice have options. Switch version really wasn’t viable for competitive play.
I might give this a go again once this is out. I trued it when it first released but the technical limitations just didn't make for an enjoyable experience. This might change that
@Fandabidozi you should take the dive.
once I played on the switch I never went back to the ps4 (or the ps5 now that I have that)
just try it
this game needed this so much i almost shed a tear of happyness.
I feel like theres no excuse for it to not to be 60fps
can we get this but with apex
That's it? Then again was I expecting anything more?
I've never really had any performance issues when I play Fortnite on switch, but this update looks great! Always love more crisp visuals whenever I can get them.
Switch version is amazing. this makes it better. I constantly cross play off my switch againts a friend on a xbox series s. Yes theirs is graphically better... but i dont find it unbalanced in anyway.. my win total on switch will proove that
Last time I played, it had issues with poor textures on the Switch. Was that resolved?
@Fandabidozi Is it because PS4 players would be hampered if they had to compete against PC players with superior mouse aiming or Switch players with better gyro aiming? Is that why they don't do cross play?
@MarcelM I heard that the frame rate on Switch is much more constant now, so that's cool I guess.
Stopped playing on Switch cause it took up too much space I could have been using on something else... So I only play on PS4, when I rarely do play it.
Does anyone know if this has been released with the earlier patch or later for Switch owners?
Played some Battle Lab just to check it out and left very disappointed. Frame rate still ranged between 12-25 for long stretches. Maybe I'll see the resolution bump more when I move back to my better TV, but I feel like edges look more jaggy than before. Sigh...
@OldSchool88 that’s a straight up lie. So the resolution is definitely improved noticeably, specifically in portable mode. The frame rate is a pretty steady 30. At no such point does it drop to 15-20. Blatant lie. Only thing I can think is lag but I’m not sure creative mode has more or less. Unless you were stressing the engine somehow.
I don't play, but how did they suddenly figure out how to increase both resolution and framerate? 🤔 I wonder if it's an upscale gimmick.
Mostly played it on Xbox Series X, and my bad, tried it later on Switch - Its atexture pop-in lagfest there, barely enjoyable.
@Prizm They took more advantage of the Switch's GPU or something iirc
I find it was alot smoother for sure. My only issu is there's a stutter every now and again while running about that can mess me up if it happens in a fight. Don't know why it does it. Been doing it for ever now it feels.
@SoObsolete since the update. Series X does it too.
@Snakesglowcaps Dude why are you being a total ? I'm lying? Um no. I'm 40 years old, kid. I don't talk out of my ass just to hate on something. Fwiw, my frame rate was much better today...although it still drops to 15-20 in some busy spots... and I spot a resolution bump since I switched to my good Samsung TV. That said, when emoting or moving in general, it looks pretty dang rough. Not sure if that's caused by the dynamic resolution or what, but it looks like claymation animation. Pretty ugly IMO. If it's okay to have an opinion.
Also, it still stutters (sometimes) at the worst times, while building or right before shotgunning someone.
@OldSchool88 I reaffirm there are no dips to 15-20. Your eyes must just be extremely sensitive. You sure you updated? Sorry you’re right bit Dickish but there is a fair share of peeps who say it sucks and this and that that isn’t true just to ***** on it. You can turn a frame counter on in game. Me personally I’ve never seen it drop below 29
