Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

Morph

For me the next gen is possibly the easiest transition since NES to SNES.

Don't reinvent the wheel, just stick with the exact same formula. Keep the exact same game carts, make the system backwards compatible with the Switch. Develop new Joycon, possibly make the joycon themselves modular so the control schemes can be swithed up.

Souped up specs including 1080p screen and 4k in docked. Perhaps put more tech into the dock to give that power boost in docked mode that the current Switch doesn't have. That's it really.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch Sports - Familiar Fun With Friends, But Little More

Morph

Nah, it's not a 6 game, not at all, not going by the typical scoring of games on here.

It's interesting because it's clear that the intention was to make a point of this game even from the preview, the tone of the reporting on it even then seemed to pick holes in things that weren't really issues. Like the two players in tennis for instance, I'm still not sure why that's an issue.

Either way, I'm enjoying it for what it is, which is a wii sports follow up, it doesn't need to be any more complex than that. Is it a 10? Of course not, but I'd say its at least a 7 perhaps an 8.

Re: The 'Panda' GameCube Controller Kickstarter Has Been Cancelled

Morph

@somebread I'm not really suggesting we should really feel bad for anyone, I do however think they have misled people.

It took them 4 weeks and $2m in pledges to 'realise' they couldn't go through with what was promised?

My guess is they have been approached by an investor who has given them more favourable terms which has led to them cancelling, or they always intended to go this route and then seek alternative investment.

My guess is we are going to see this pop up again 12 months from now. Realistically they could have just altered the delivery date, it has happened plenty to much bigger companies, Steam Deck for example.

I just don't think all is as it seems.

Re: The 'Panda' GameCube Controller Kickstarter Has Been Cancelled

Morph

I'm not that convinced this is the honourable thing everyone thinks it is. Working on it for 3 years and only just realised now that it was going to be too difficult to get it our within the year?

Alternatively, they now have a solid base on which to seek alternative investment because they can prove they have a solid tangible customer base who were willing to fund the project to the tune of $2m. I'm sure this will make any finance meetings much easier on their end.

Personally I think the whole Kickstarter thing was a ruse and now they can seek investment on better terms.

Re: Talking Point: Will Nintendo Abandon The Switch Concept For Its Next Console?

Morph

If almost certain we won't see a radical departure from the switch concept. The fact that Nintendo consolidated all of their gaming divisions a number of years ago means they aren't going to go and spread themselves thinly again over multiple platforms when they have really just gotten to the point that they are able to put out quality games on a regular basis.

This means that the next hardware will either have to be a hybrid like Switch capable of portable and home play, or there will have to be two versions of the next console one for handheld play and one for home play. The only problem with this is it removes a big selling point of the Switch which is that it does both, the negative for nintendo is that they don't get to sell as much hardware as they did with two successful platforms. This might not be a big issue for them as long as the software sales are high seeing as profits on consoles tend not not to be that great.

I think we see a continuation of the Switch concept, with Nintendo playing it uncharacteristically safe, maybe not exactly Switch 2 but not too far from it.

Re: The Switch Is Here To Stay, Says Nintendo Boss Shuntaro Furukawa

Morph

I'm fairly certain we won't see a 10 year lifecycle, or at least it won't be 10 years till we see the next generation. Switch could probably continue in largely the same way that PS3 carries into PS4 and PS4 into PS5. We haven't really seen that before with Nintendo consoles as support always seems to fall of a cliff once the next hardware iteration is out.

The Switch concept is excellent but the biggest issue will always be the lack of power in the hardware. As this gen continues this will only become more evident and may lead to devs not putting the time and resources into bringing newer games to Switch as it will become too difficult.

I think we'll probably see the next mainline console in 2-3 years time, so sometime in 2024.

Re: GTA Trilogy's Physical Edition On Switch Appears To Require A Download

Morph

@kobashi100 I don't really see why comparing it to Blu Ray discs is relevant in this case. They are obviously cheaper to produce due to the lack of tech involved and the greater numbers they are already produced in, plus the fact that lots of different companies manufacture them.

I appreciate 32gb carts are more expensive, this stands to reason, however that still doesn't get away from the fact that there are publishers out there who have used them in the past, so obviously the cost isn't that prohibitive and it mustn't have hurt their bottom line that much.

LRG aren't a great comparison due to the small numbers they will produce games in therefore they aren't going to be buying carts in the sort of numbers where you are going to see a significant discount.

I don't believe the 64GB cards have ever been released which is likely due to the low demand for 32GB cards. While this may be speculation, I would suggest that it is unlikely cart production is exactly the same as 4 years ago decreased part costs and greater production runs are naturally going to see costs decrease over time. Perhaps not by as much taking Covid into account but I would still suggest there will have been drop.

Regardless though, it would be understandable for a small publisher to opt for smaller carts but a company the size of Rockstar could absolutely have used 32GB carts instead of the halfway house of part physical, part download.

Re: GTA Trilogy's Physical Edition On Switch Appears To Require A Download

Morph

@kobashi100 the fact they were using them early on proves the point though doesn't it? The cost is clearly not prohibitive otherwise Asian publishers wouldn't do it.

If anything the cost will have decreased over the last 3 years or so, it's unlikely to have increased. Memory prices have decreased significantlyin that time, but obviously the cost of the Switch Game card production itself adds to that cost.

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Missed Nintendo Hardware

Morph

Even though we've had some iterations of these games I think the key franchises for me would be:

GTA (still only the old games coming)
Mass Effect
Metal Gear
Tomb Raider
Kingdom Hearts
Persona
Even Call of Duty has surprised me not coming to Switch when it had a few releases on Wii.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

Morph

My feeling is they will add a few more consoles to this tier eventually but in its current state it just isn't worth it.

Add in Gameboy, GBA and perhaps even DS and then I think we'd be talking. I think the other thing they could have done is make all first party dlc available on this tier not just animal crossing which is just ridiculous.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Will Be 60Hz In Europe After All

Morph

Always seemed like a fuss about nothing. They weren't seriously going to just release 50Hz versions in this day and age. The obviously won't go back and add multiple language options to the 60Hz versions as it would just not be cost effective but 60Hz in English and 50Hz in other European languages always seemed the most likely outcome

Re: Poll: What's A Fair Price For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?

Morph

@Munchlax why is it bad value?

£17.99 for a years sub to use the online servers and get a host of classic games plus the odd more premium game like Tetris 99 seems quite reasonable to me. Adding in N64 as well and potentially Gameboy in the future and keeping the cost sub £25 would also seem quite reasonable should it happen, that's a vast gaming library for those who are interested.

Re: Poll: What's A Fair Price For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?

Morph

I think you've got your price point suggestions incorrect in the poll which makes it difficult.

To me the logical prices if we are dealing in GBP (and the current price point is £17.99) are:

£2.00 to bring it up to £19.99
£7.00 to bring it up to £24.99
£12.00 to bring it up to £29.99

I don't see it going higher than that.
At those price points I imagine the £7.00 being closer.

Re: Three Kingdom Hearts Games Are Coming To Switch, But They're All Cloud Versions

Morph

Lazy, lazy, lazy.

I won't be touching these at all. Physical release - absolutely, Digital only - possibly, Cloud based - not a chance. Especially when there's absolutely no reason from a technical standpoint.

It's quite puzzling why Kingdom Hearts never gets a fair crack on Nintendo systems especially when Square have given us pretty much all of the final fantasy games.

Re: Jet Set Radio Artist And Former Yakuza Director Ryuta Ueda Returns To Sega

Morph

Sega are sitting on such a goldmine of IP it's criminal that we aren't getting more output from them.

Sonic
Streets of Rage
Golden Axe
Sega Rally
Dayona USA
Hang On
Outrun
Virtua Fighter
Fighting Vipers
Shining Force
Phantasy Star
Skies of Arcadia
Wonderboy
Afterburner
Crazy Taxi
Virtual On
Panzer Dragoon
Gunstar Heroes
Nights
Jet Set Radio
Space Harrier
House of the Dead
Virtua Cop

Some have been dormant longer than others and I know we've had release from external developers for a few of these franchises but Sega has poorly managed most of them.

Streets of Rage is pretty much the rare exception to the rule. I'd love to see them return to the heady days of the 90's where they ruled the home 'arcade' experience and they had some fantastic RPGs, such a shame.

Re: Fatal Frame Producer Says Maiden Of Black Water Success Could Lead To A Sequel

Morph

@GinMiguel unless something has changed in the last 18 months then I don't believe that's the case.

See this from 2020:

The series producer of Project Zero - or Fatal Frame, as the series was known outside of Europe - Keisuke Kikuchi, says that while he's open to expanding the series, it's ultimately up to IP co-holders Nintendo to decide whether or not we'll get a remake or a new instalment of the terrifying series.

"Even though I have these hopes, this is a series that Nintendo publishes for us and I only handle the development," Kikuchi told Nintendo Everything. "So even if I were to say I want to make another game, that doesn't necessarily mean that's what will happen."

Re: Surprise! Mario Golf: Super Rush Is Getting A New Character, Course And More In Free Update

Morph

@russell-marlow is that seriously what you took from that? I'm saying from a business pov if a game is selling well and it is then they really have no need to carry on adding content. It's brilliant that they are and I like that they continue to add content to games post release, the balance is working out what is an acceptable amount of content to have in order to release a game.

Re: Fatal Frame Producer Says Maiden Of Black Water Success Could Lead To A Sequel

Morph

It's going to be an interesting set of circumstances.

Nintendo owns the IP so they must have given their permission for this multiplatform edition to be released I'm just wondering what's in it for them.

For example I believe when they gave permission for Wonderful 101 to be released they acquired the Astral Chain IP

I wonder if their thinking is to make as much as they can from the sales of the game on other platforms and then use the profits to put into a Fatal Frame 6 which would again be Nintendo exclusive.
