Today's reveal of the Nintendo Switch OLED hasn't led to much disruption in terms of what games can be played and enjoyed; the system is the same under the hood, albeit the bigger screen and other goodies will still make it desirable. However it is a teeny bit wider, which will impact Nintendo Labo.
The Labo range has been an enjoyable part of this generation, albeit its quirky approach to building and gaming perhaps didn't achieve notable sales success as the series progressed. Now the official FAQ has outlined that there will be 'differences' playing the Labo Toy-Con accessories with the OLED model.
However, there may be differences in game experience with some of the Toy-Con accessories from the Nintendo Labo series, due to differences in console and screen size between Nintendo Switch (OLED model) and Nintendo Switch. There may also be games where the game experience may differ due to the new capabilities of the console, such as the larger screen size.
The size difference is only 0.1 inches in terms of the OLED tablet's overall width, so for a number of the Toy-Cons we imagine it'll still fit, it may just be the most snug cardboard controllers affected. The Labo VR is most likely to be affected, as the bigger screen will potentially not align properly with the goggles.
We shall see when the system launches - the big question, do you still play Nintendo Labo? Perhaps we should all dig out that cardboard as a reminder that, actually, it can be rather fun...

Just please don't put switch OLED only games on it please. (I new those M+R screen shots were to good.)
'Differences in game experience'? That's a interesting way of saying some of them won't work as well.
It's difficult to actually find Labo kits in stock these days, and I guess they won't be restocked now that there are two Switch models that they weren't designed for. It's a shame, Labo is a really cool concept.
Makes me feel a little more validated to keep using the LCD model.
I wonder if the VR will look any better with the better quality screen to work from.
@noobish_hat That was game builder garage, which is based off of the toy con garage in the VR kit
@Dogorilla I know, it was something so quirky and unique that only Nintendo could have created it.
I enjoyed building the kits and playing with them at first, but the earlier kits were lacking in meaningful gameplay content once they were constructed, which deterred many consumers (along with the high price of the first three) from buying further kits.
It felt like by the time Nintendo learned from it and developed multiple game modes for each Toy-Con and sold Toy-Con in smaller individual sets for reduced prices, it was too late to catch the attention of the market and it faded away. I especially enjoyed the VR kit.
As the article states, the new 7" screen may not align with the viewing lens. I'm guessing they will release a small patch because why wouldn't nintendo patch in a QoL update to an old game that didn't set the world on fire?
@Snatcher How would you make a OLED exclusive title? That does not make any sense.
@Hero8-Bit BC it would have more power.
@Morph it may actually look worse, bigger screen same resolution. The OLED is just going to make it look brighter and give it better color.
@Snatcher OLED version has the same spec. The screen is slightly better. But that does not mean it will run better. All Nintendo did was put a slightly better screen on the regular switch. No need to worry about exclusivity.
@Hero8-Bit Its just bc its nintendo, and they actually could do that if they really wanted to, Not saying they will but you know.
Labo VR will be even more disorted than it was before.
@Snatcher lol, I was thinking the same thing, they wouldn't, but knowing Nintendo, they might.
I just bought the Nintendo Labo :/
@Morph
While each pixel may look better, each pixel is also larger. As such, the geometry is likely to be distorted and the 'screen door' effect would be even more prominent.
Difference 1: you can't buy them anymore
@noobish_hat Yeah, Emily Rodgers, the one who was hinting at it confirmed that was the announcement she was referring to.
@Crockin A fitting profile pic
@Snatcher There isn't really much sense in Exclusive games for it (unlike say the Gameboy Colour)
When there's almost 90million Switches and Switch Lites, even if the OLED system was more powerful, no exclusive could ever sell enough to make it worthwhile.
@nukatha it's a trade off though isn't it. It's a marginal size increase per pixel, I would suggest not noticeable to human eye. However the quality of the screen and the brightness should counter that anyway. Whether a different set of labo lenses will be needed is another matter though.
@Dr_Lugae Well if sales start to fall down then there is a reason for them to put exclusives.
I remember seeing Labo Kits sold at Half-Price Books. Great prices, but $17.99 for used cardboard when new kits cost $24.99 at GameStop was a ripoff.

BOTW in VR mode is actually one of my favorite experiences on the Switch. I’m not willing to give that up. And considering I play in docked mode 95% of the time anyway, I’ll probably hold out until the inevitable revision in 2023.
Labo's biggest flaw that prevented its success was Nintendo's failure to cultivate a thriving creative community around it. With an extremely bland coding interface (compared to the rest of the software) as well as a lack of tutorials, they had already failed to excite players to invent their own playthings from the get-go, but the most fatal flaw was the absence of any way for players to share their creations. Game Builder Garage remedies most of these issues but unfortunately loses the value of creating tangible playthings in the process, which in my opinion, was the most important part.
How will the VR kit work on the OLED one?
If they don't release a new kit then they would have to make it work with software and that would probably mean lower resolution than the original Switch?
The website of Nintendo Japan says almost exactly the same thing. My painfully literal translation: "[The Nintendo Switch (OLED model)] is compatible with all Nintendo Switch software. However, from the fact that the console and screen sizes differ between the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) and the Nintendo Switch, there will be differences in gameplay experience in some of the Nintendo Labo series. Even in non-Nintendo [published] software, there may be cases in which differences in gameplay experience occur." I wish they would just tell us whether or not the VR googles still work...!
