As you may or may not have noticed, here at Nintendo Life we've tried to be pretty darn picky in the past couple of weeks about what we report regarding the 'next' Switch, or 'Switch Pro' as people insist on calling it. 'Pro' tip, that PlayStation-style branding is very unlikely from modern-day Nintendo, but this scribe is very happy to be proven wrong.
We covered a Bloomberg report - a reputable and traditionally trusted outlet behind a paywall, no less - that repeated a lot of previous rumours but added the wrinkle that it was expected to be revealed prior to E3; time is running out for that. We've ignored numerous loose rumours and unsubstantiated images on social media since then, referring to store listings, easily faked inventory screens and more besides.
As the days have passed the idea has fallen back a little, and the focus is really on what games Nintendo will bring to its E3 Direct next week. But Warhorse Studios prompted a bit of light-hearted chat with its tweet confirming a Kingdom Come: Deliverance port, below (bigger version of the image is at the top):
This is 99.9999% likely to be a bit of a Photoshop error, with the studio forgetting to account for the system's bezel when layering its artwork over the screen. It's the same old Switch unit in terms of its shell and every other aspect, it's just missing the bezel. In fact, we did an extremely similar bit of manipulation - deliberately in our case - for an article way back in January 2020 asking what features you'd like in Switch Pro. You can see the image we did below and the striking similarity to the Warhorse Studios one, in terms of the simple technique / mistake that can make the screen look bigger.
But it does make us wonder, what if recent rumours have repeated errors from older 'Pro' speculation? There was talk of new hardware as long as two years ago, but what did emerge in the real world was the 'Mariko' Switch - pretty much the same system as far as the consumer is concerned, but with a more efficient iteration of the Tegra GPU. Aside from tiny margins it was clocked to have the same performance as original models, but it has much better battery life; it was an unheralded revision, and it's easy to see how mis-interpreted or mischievous sources led to reports of a 'new' Switch back then, when the eventual reality was less exciting.
Now, considering the path Nintendo took with 3DS, albeit in quicker succession, what if the reports around Switch systems being prepped with larger 7-inch screens are accurate, but the rest of the same-old rumours around boosted specifications are - like in past rounds of speculation - fanciful and incorrect? What if we get Switch XL, which is exactly the same in capabilities but with a bigger screen? You can easily theoretically fit a 7-inch screen on the existing shell, and there'd no doubt be some tweaks to accommodate it in the construction. But if everything else remained pretty much the same, it would mean Nintendo would continue its current manufacturing processes with very minor adjustments. Granted it wouldn't be a massive change in screen size, but the system has always had way too much bezel, we'd happily get rid of it.
Considering the substantial issues around parts in the technology industry, this would allow Nintendo to give people a system with a high quality and bigger screen, and still manage its existing processes and chip supplies. It's certainly a practical option, preserving bigger hardware revisions or new hardware for less volatile times.
It's fun to think over, anyway, though we suspect those pinning hopes on a more powerful Switch would react unfavourably. If Nintendo is plotting new hardware soon it will have finalised plans months ago due to the complex logistics of hardware manufacturing, especially this year. We'll find out eventually!

Well it would need better battery for sure. Most people will buy it but it will not be much of an improvement.
I would like to see White color as default color.
3DS XL have Pearl White color, all my 3DS XL machines are White color so why not White Nintendo Switch XL as default color ?
A "Nintendo Switch XL" sounds a little ridiculous considering the size of the Switch in comparison to all other handheld consoles (only rivaled by the Virtual Boy). I don't mind the idea, but it would be pretty pointless if you get a larger screen at the same resolution.
I keep saying, it'll be called a Switch XL regardless. You dont make a Lite and not offer the counterpart in similar branding.
Switch XL: XL screen on the go, XL resolution on the TV.
Bad idea. The screen size is fine for a portable and if you want it on a bigger screen Nintendo have given you a dock to connect it to whatever TV is readily available. There are a lot of other things I'd prefer to see Nintendo invest resources in over this.
**Why on earth do people want a bigger Switch???** The original is the biggest and heaviest Portable system released by a major player so far! It really is borderline too heavy.
I’m only interested in lighter and slimmer dock-able Switches going forward - ‘pro‘ or otherwise.
Absolutely ZERO interest in an XL version. Stupid stupid idea. Madness.
I cannot find New Nintendo 3DS anywhere. Is anyone selling?
The same ol' Switch but with a bigger screen would be very disappointing. I wouldn't bother with it. But a Switch Lite with a bigger screen would make sense! I still wouldn't buy that either lol. Gimme the Pro or Switch 2!
I think the original Switch strikes a good balance between screen size and resolution. The Lite is too small for text-heavy games.
My only real "need" for upgrading would be better visuals on my 4k monitor.
There have been advertisements before that removed the bezel to make the picture larger. So that in it self doesn't prove anything. I would like the new switch to have that smaller bezel and thus a larger screen. But I do think it should come with upgraded hardware too, otherwise I won't be bothered to make the switch 😉.
@iuli @Peteykins @brunojenso @Slowdive
Would you people mind reading the article first? It was not talking about new Switch with larger dimensions, but just a larger screen.
Wouldn't bother if it was just a size increase. Unlike the base 3DS, the base Switch screen isn't tiny and even then I mostly use docked mode.
I'd prefer they release one without Joy Con Drift but I'm probably being unrealistic.
😜
The NDSi XL and 3DS XL/2DS XL increased the screen size by 80-90% compared to the standard-sized NDS and 3DS models.
A Switch with a 7-inch display would only increase the screen size by ~27% compared to the current Switch, which hardly seems like much of an XL model at all.
Switch Pro is rumored to have an OLED screen, 4K output via DLSS support, an upgraded CPU, and more/better memory. An increase in screen size is insignificant compared to everything else that the Switch Pro will supposedly offer.
@Anti-Matter I’d love to see that too. Give us an all-white Switch similar to the all red Mario edition.
Considering I play docked 99.89% of the time it wouldn't be of any use to me.
Wouldn't bother with just larger screen
It would need improved battery, higher resolution, larger RAM and memory, more powerful chip.
I wouldn't say I'd be disappointed, because I'm not bothered about the Switch revision anyway. Like others have said, though, I can't see why the Switch would need to be any bigger.
All i care is if the Pro gets exclusive or not, if not then fine i don't care what they do but if its get exclusives then i'm happy as its basically Nintendo saying screw you to everyone who bought a Switch this past year. Make it like a PS4 Pro and i'm happy but its another New 3DS then i'm not.
I’ve actually seen this style of switch shown in marketing material for a while now, and you all will probably have have too. E.g. I believe it was right here on Nintendolife when Pikmin 3 released for switch they had a marketing section where you scroll down the page and shows the switch sliding into the dock as you scroll down, the switch being bezel-less like above. It’s just marketing to show off a larger game image/title screen. I would love for this design for any new switch to come along, I always thought it looked great
It's not big enough until I feel like I'm holding a monitor in my hands. And get the added bonus of slowly getting ripped from playing in handheld mode.
Depends quite heavily on what "just" and "basic" are supposed to mean in this regard.
I'd consider it the only acceptable thing to do to, to release a luxury build with a bigger/better screen and other casing improvements.
Preferably one that works with existing JoyCon.
And existing JoyCon peripherals.
And propane related products.
Where's the option for "I wouldn't be disappointed but I also wouldn't be interested"
I prefer my switch lite for handheld gaming so a switch XL ain’t no use to me. If I had any extra dough to throw at hardware it would be for the Xbox series X.
@Scapetti yep thought the same thing.
This would actually make me laugh if they done this, would be such a Ninty thing to do also. Although very soon after the pro rumors would start again.
@ModdedInkling I thought VB was a tabletop console, not a handheld one.
@Slowdive that would end up too awkward to be worth winking at - if the game can only run on a hypothetical beefed-up model you can't speak of, you just ended up announcing the game for the whole "family" of systems, which might (and in the bloodshot eyes of many a fan, absolutely will) come across as false advertising later. Besides, what' would be "unthinkable" about a port to the model that Insiderland gleefully paints as a damn portable PS4 Pro?😅
Just a reduced screen bezel and a change from the current LCD screen to an OLED screen wouldn't be enough to coax me to purchase yet another Switch.
If it's just a bigger screen, I won't be disappointed.
I still may get it because, tiny text in-game would be easier to read, and I want extended battery life than my launch Switch.
now for joke answer: Where's my damn SwitchStation 5!!??😠😠😠
The standard switch is on the brink of being too big for a handheld. Bigger would not necessarily be better. If they somehow managed to squeeze another inch into the screen by using the bezel, and up the resolution without making the unit too unwieldy, it could be cool. It then raises questions about the size of the joycons on a bigger unit: Would it come with XL joycons? That could be cool.
What I'd actually like is a 'Nintendo Switch Box' that is just a small Apple TV-sized puck with the internal gubbins of the Switch therein and a cartridge slot on top. It would be capable of upscaling to 4K or playing older titles at higher framerates due to not needing to be portable and come with a Pro Controller as standard.
I much prefer this article speculating rather than the constant crappy rumours, and being old and a bit blind this idea sounds good.
In fact I often use the switch as a tv and play with a pro controller so a day one buy for me and far. Far more than upscaling things for better graphics, I think it would be better is games makers just downgraded them and made it run better.
Nah bruh. Even with my absolutely horrific vision, I wouldn't buy another Switch with just a bigger screen. A bigger OLED screen, maybe. A bigger OLED and a few other improvements, yes. But if it's literally the same device with less bezel, no chance - and I really doubt that this is what's coming from Nintendo.
I don't personally get why people seem to hate bezels so much. I actually prefer devices with bezel so I feel like there's a safe area to pick them up by. My phone constantly thinks I'm swiping when all I meant to do is pick the thing up. I'd hate to have the same problem with the Switch.
(Also, bezel is a really fun word).
Bezel schmezel. Take a quick glance at the Wii U gamepad and then tell me the Switch’s bezel is too thick.
Or the OG Game Boy for that matter.
I wouldn't purchase a Switch XL as described above. I'm looking for a few items to be improved upon.
@Slowdive you'd be surprised what the rumour mill dishes out. And it's not about visuals in this case, but a game running at all.
Was discussing this with a friend. Here's what we came up with (considering Nintendo are unlikely to give us what we want)
While this isn't the super powerful, all singing, all dancing Switch Pro I want, i'd still get it. And I think tens of millions would follow suit while we wait for the inevitable Switch 2
The Switch already has a larger screen option, its called your television.
This isn't really like the 3DS XL though - it's the same size Switch but with what would effectively be a far superior screen. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo took that route.
Everyone is expecting a 4k pro switch and then nintendo says: ”Heres the new switch xl, same as the old one but bigger screen”
😅
If it really was called the "Nintendo Switch XL" that would be a very underwhelming name.
The switch is alread big enough. However, I would be on board if they wanted to make new joycon with the pro controller sized buttons.
A lot of games are already sub-native in handheld mode. A bigger screen without any kind of alteration to the internals is just going to make bigger games on the system look worse.
I would rather have a Pro dock than just a xxl screen.
Flip in the switch and you can play 4K medium settings games. And undocked it will be the lowest switch normal settings, stuttering gameplay etc 🤣 just kidding.
But Pro dock with more horsepower would do for me. Or at least a switch with better joycons 2.0, lighter weight but bigger screen. And more ram would do.
@iuli No, a larger screen wouldn't require more processing power, because the resolution would still be the same 720p. So actually the pixel density would be less. A larger screen would only drain the battery faster, depending on the display tech. All of this was talked about when there were reports of 7 inch OLED screens coming to the possible Switch revision.
@Peteykins Ah, you didn't anger me, I was merely annoyed that it seemed to me that you commented without bothering to read the article first. Because you just wrote "larger Switch" and not "Switch with a larger screen".
Hopefully a switch Pro adds more power than just allowing them to port 3 year old last gen titles. Hard to get excited for announcements like this.
Any bigger and you would have to set it down and hook it up to your tv to play it, so in that case just make SwitchTV instead, save money on the screen and battery, sell it with the Pro instead of Joycon, save everyone from the drift. It should work w/ sold separately Joycon like the Lite does of course.
I would want it, but if it doesn't play my games any better I have no reason t buy it. An upgraded model, on the other hand...
I, for one, couldn't care less.
No upgrades or whatever for me.
Joy con drift needs tombe fixed. And overall Switch online and general Switch apps (themes? daily game play stats, etc.) need a return, this system still unfinished, as is.
This is actually more feaseble to occurr since Nintendo has made this type of hardware revision in the past. And we're still getting third party games, since last gent systems are still getting the same games, and will for at least another two years. but most likely, Nintendo will only increase the file size of the Switch's catridges.
Switch's screen is too small for many games as designed and it does need a bigger screen, but a bigger screen without being a better screen isn't valuable, and if they're introducing such a unit without advertising the new screen heavily, and highlighting it with a visible design change of some kind, there would be more involved inside as well. 3DS XL came much earlier in the product's life and filled a gap in the product where the very tiny pocket screen was small for many games. The substantially larger screen provided a much needed difference for more sizable games. But by this late in the lifespan we got NEW 3DS, which was originally not going to have its signature feature of "super stable 3D" until Miyamoto declared that if NEW 3DS didn't use the eye tracking there was no point in selling it at all. But one of its stated functions was UI speed improvement and eShop performance improvements which were awful on the OG and XL models. Kind of like 3DS.
@Ralizah .....just like 3DS XL then?
What about adding another option to that list:
@Slowdive you mean, why release a game for an estimated 85+ million userbase as opposed to something anyone could only play if they even MANAGED to buy the alleged upgrade? Not to mention that this game would be effectively launching at the combined price of several hundred dollars? Even Sony, the ones the fandom grabbed the "Pro" nickname from, weren't tempted to go there.
The OG Switch is already too big to really suit my needs as a handheld, it can’t even fit in my pocket. Making it even larger would be counterproductive, it needs increased power, not increased size.
I rarely use handheld mode. If this regular ol' Switch XL is actually the route they take I would have zero incentive to upgrade.
@iuli Come on, don't be like that! You did have a good point that IF they increased the screen resolution that it might not be worth it because it would require more processing power.
But I wanted to ease your mind that they most probably will not increase the resolution even if they put in a bigger screen.
I don't think the Switch itself needs to be bigger. Sure, get rid of the bezel we currently have so the screen can be a little bigger but as a unit, it's big enough.
I've said before that a Switch XL is more likely than a Super/Pro Switch, and I'd be tickled if that was the case.
Mainly due to the meltdowns that would happen across the internet, but also because I wouldn't have to spend £400 on a new 4K Switch for at least a couple of years.
@WallyWest Why would that make you happy?
@gaga64 okay.
*glance *
wow, all these systems could have bigger screens.
id love fact its xl after all the analists YT and nintendo sites saying switch pro announced soon for what 3 bloody years now. Or switch 2 and we all laugh at them.
Switch XL is what I'm hoping / dreaming for. It's got to be large enough, more like tablet size. But if they do it right I foresee smash, overcooked, and local coop/comp games being much more viable. It makes sense too, Lite focuses on portable, let XL focus on tabletop. And if a pro or sequel comes out, that can focus on docked. For something like a pro, the moment it comes out devs have to decide whether to make their game use the extra power and become exclusive to pro. But tech gets better as you go, so the longer we wait the better specs or cheaper price that could be. It's prob more feasible to do current specs but XL screen, but if done I hope the size diff is as drastic as reg DS to DS XL. Do that Ninty, and I'm in
Oh, and I suppose aside from that any future Switches could use some anti-reflection on the screen. Trying to play the switch outdoors in AZ doesn't work well! A battery life of 4 hours min would be ideal for the occasional local multiplayer session on the go, though if it was dockless and they had the power cable accessible while playing, then that wouldn't be a big deal. That would prob be a more needed feature. The XL imo would then be a true portable multiplayer gaming setup/rig, where if we were just talking portability, the Ds/3ds were the absolute best for that. Switch Lite is still too large imo and not desirable due to potential joycon drift (at min that should be swappable). A $400 price point for XL would make sense with Lite being $200, reg being $300.
I barely ever use my Switch undocked so I would prefer something that improves it's performance
My answer would be no, but none of the options in the poll fit for that answer.
Honestly what really more do we need, do we really want another console with exclusives.
(Yes I’m still salty that MMX was arbitrarily restricted to the new 3DS)
@Bret but at what cost?!? Just because they could, doesn’t mean they should. Did you learn nothing from Jurassic Park?!?
I’ll see myself out.
@BlackenedHalo check ebay
@msvt the system is perfectly fine. Every system has its quirks and you hear about them all the time, at least with the switch it’s a controller issue and not a system bricking issue. As for the NSO it is perfectly fine as well. I mean it’s 20 bucks a year and you have plenty of games you can play on it for that, I mean you could pay 60 a year and get the exact same thing from Sony with their ps now with just more games. Remember that program started the same way and so did game pass. You just sound like one of those people that no matter what they do you’ll never be satisfied.don’t like it don’t buy it.
If Nintendo were going to make some form of "quality of screen life" upgrade, it'd be wiser to announce it alongside an upgraded console. It would negate a lot of the disappointment, and could use the event to announce some upcoming price reduction on the older for when a new, more expensive Switch is in circulation.
You tealky think this is a new switch pro? ;D
I'm not interested in a bigger XL Switch. The one we have is easily big enough.
I mean if this actually does turn out to be the case then i probably wouldn't bother with it unless my existing joy cons fit.
If i need new joy cons for the bigger screen then yeah, hard pass for me.
@nhSnork
Because there's no such classification as a "tabletop" console (there's only home, handheld, hybrid, and micro), the Virtual Boy is a handheld. As a matter of fact, it was marketed as a "handheld" despite not featuring anything distinctively handheld.
If it was ONLY a larger OLED screen and nothing else, literally nothing else, I'd still buy it for the larger OLED screen. It wouldn't be nearly as exciting but that's still a nice upgrade imo.
I don't think that's a likely outcome though. At the very least I suspect it'll be the larger OLED screen and a slight bump in clock speeds, similar to New 3DS. Nothing like a generational leap, but it should iron out some framerates and keep a more consistent dynamic res.
But one should always account for the possibility, even if unlikely. I assign a mere 5% probability toward the outcome described in the article.
@Dirty0814
pretty big assumptions for a single post I made. Get well soon.
I think the current switch is pretty much the perfect size for portable gaming
@Would_you_kindly the form factor of the switch wouldn't change, just the amount of the face that the screen actually takes up. more of a modern smartphone screen and less of an iphone 1.
Just increasing the screen size by 27% (thanks for the maths @westman98 ) would be a wasted opportunity. Sure it would make it better for Tabletop mode, but not much else. Any revision needs better support for 4K TVs, whether that be via DLSS or dedicated upscaling through the dock.
If Nintendo were just to remove the bezels they should do that for a revision to the Lite - not to increase it's screen size above 5.5", but to make to shrink the rest of the case a bit, and maybe make the Lite lighter. It's still a bit chunky for a dedicated handheld to my mind, and why I held off from getting one.
If it was just a bigger screen and slightly more processing power similar to the New 3DS XL, I wouldn't upgrade. I primarily play docked.
All I want is a Switch with improved QOL:
DLSS for some nice upscaling in docked mode would be a bonus. More power would be a bonus. But QOL improvements is the most important thing to me.
I just want a Switch 2.0 before I want a Super Switch.
It won't disappoint me in any way, but I won't buy it since I already have a "standard" Switch.
If the only change were to the size of the unit and nothing else, I almost certainly wouldn't upgrade. That's just not enough.
But if it were a bigger screen, better battery, second SD card slot, native Bluetooth audio and the larger screen was also higher quality, but the same performance specs?
That I would buy.
@Moshugan hmm, fair point I did skim the article - so my apologies. But in fairness Nintendo life used two references to the name ‘Switch XL’. Like the DS and 3DS that name is linked to much bigger systems and not just bigger screens. So if they use that name of course people are going to assume we are discussing a larger device as well.
Regarding the larger screen if they go 1080p then sure. But if they make the screen larger but with the same pixel count that would be a step in the wrong direction, since the ppi of the Switch screen is a bit low as is. My main concern is the weight - I don’t want a heavier Switch.
Obviously it'll be the SwitchSmart smartphone using the same ui as the switch but with a cell transmitter
Better not skip on the glass screen protector if this ever happens or your dock will scuff your screen instead of a bezel.
@brunojenso
The Switch ain't that big
Could have knocked someone out with the Atari Lynx back in the day and kept on playing lol
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D5QM3EuVUAAsKUc?format=jpg&name=large
March 2017:
Nintendo has been beta testing on consumers since 2017, and we didn't even know it. In all seriousness, it might be better for the games, but if botw2 or bayonetta3 is exclusive to the pro, I'll be quite the upset fellow.
@Slowdive we've had this conversation before.
Unless it's a significant power increase I genuinely don't see the point in a new Switch for a handful of "exclusives". Especially when it is likely to be £400+, for hardware that is effectively still a generation behind everything else.
@brunojenso
I agree with this. I barely use it as a handheld due to how uncomfortable it is for long play sessions.
@WhirlyWoo true that, but who wanted a Lynx for that reason!
@ModdedInkling actually the Virtual Boy is mobile/portable console and is consider a tabletop console like something from Tandy. Cause table is required, and if I can recall something like this is also stated in the Virtual Boy manual. Not 100% sure.
😜
The Nintendo Switch is already a pain to bring around portably since it can't fit in a pocket or even easily inside a backpack. I would rather have a Switch that doesn't switch that's purely a home console then a larger screen.
@brunojenso Yeah I can't really play on my regular switch in handheld mode as it's really just inconvenient to take around now. The lite is perfect to take on the go. Hopefully the pro is lighter and thinner, but better graphics
@brunojenso I agree that it was confusing how the article used the term XL!
I hope Nintendo releases multiple SKUs of Switch, one of which is a dedicated home device. For me, a new portable version would need to be significantly more comfortable to hold than the regular and Lite models.
@Bret you mean just the black border around the edges ?
@brunojenso
Haha you had to protect yourself back then when sitting in the park with a handheld console
Another feature the Nintendo Switch needs it is HDR color. Neither the current Switch or its dock's HDMI port support it.
Without HDR:
1) there will be no need for a substantial bump in performance.
2) We would most likely get just a repeat of the last revision:
A CPU swap
A slight motherboard change for better compatibility with the new CPU. (If needed)
Switch XL? How about “Switch Senior”, so people with declining eye sight will not need to don glasses while gaming. Perhaps in combination with special joy-con that are both arthritis-, rheumatism- AND parkinsonfriendly.
I stopped at the part where you said you were careful about reporting about the Switch Pro.
You've been reporting about it for years now as though it was coming it out the next week.
It's hilarious but not careful at all.
That would be the most humorous outcome after all this
@Supadav03 I always love the look of white systems when they are new but my only complaint is that with time they look dirty or stained. My DS looked good on the outside but the inside discolored a bit.
XL wouldn't be bad for portable viewing game restate gaming.
Removed - inappropriate
It's honestly what I expect. I think it's still to early to think that Nintendo is going to push out a "pro" version. Especially since they're still making money off the switch and it wouldn't really make sense to split the fanbase. Maybe in another year or two but for now I'd believe it if we were getting an XL. Probably bigger screen, better joycons and more ergonomic design. It's kind of a pain to hold after a while in handheld.
@BlackenedHalo I cannot find New Nintendo 3DS anywhere. Is anyone selling?
I got 15 of them for each designs and one still in box.
@Would_you_kindly Yup. Like the photo at the top of the article.
@UndoControl
It's not true until it's true.
Also I didn't see it at the E3 direct either. Unreliable or made up leaks shouldn't be covered as news.
I'm not going to join you and make excuses about why the leaks didn't come true either.
If the rumoured new Pro Switch is just a Switch XL, that would be a huge mistake. The rumors are basically confirming DLSS 4K, and with the current Switches' chipset, such feature is impossible to do.
What would make more sense, is if Nintendo eventually released an XL version of the more powerful model, especially if it still includes a 720p screen. DLSS would adapt perfectly to a bigger, maybe 1080p screen.
This aged like fine wine.
@Anti-Matter congrats lol
