Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is making the leap to Switch this Halloween, and should this new port be successful, a sequel could well become a possibility.
That's according to series producer Keisuke Kikuchi, who recently sat down for a chat with Japanese magazine, Famitsu (thanks ryokutya2089). In the interview, Famitsu asked Kikuchi about the potential for future games after the upcoming rerelease of Maiden of Black Water, and the response was encouraging.
Here's a translation of Kikuchi's words courtesy of Nintendo Everything:
“That’s what I’m hoping. We’re releasing this game to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary, and we’re hoping a lot of fans will take the opportunity to play the game.
We’d love this to lead to a new title.”
If you're looking forward to the release of Maiden of Black Water, make sure to check out the game's overview trailer released last week. It offers a look at the in-development Switch version, giving us a sneak peek at its graphical improvements and new photo mode.

count on me.. I played the two first back on ps2 era.. I loved! it seems this one is damn good.. let's see!
I didn't have a WiiU. I'm thinking of getting this one now
(And fingers crossed for Xenoblade Chronicles X port someday..)
Excuse me, I need to go place a preorder.
at the risk of sounding like a bitter old gamer, I'm sure a physical release would ensure more copies sold, leading to more hype for a new Fatal Frame.
Even Fatal Frame has a chance for a sequel but Eternal Darkness doesn’t
Physical release, please
If you want a success, then maybe not re-release the worst game in the series?
I have this on Wii U, hated it, and will not be buying it again.
It's going to be an interesting set of circumstances.
Nintendo owns the IP so they must have given their permission for this multiplatform edition to be released I'm just wondering what's in it for them.
For example I believe when they gave permission for Wonderful 101 to be released they acquired the Astral Chain IP
I wonder if their thinking is to make as much as they can from the sales of the game on other platforms and then use the profits to put into a Fatal Frame 6 which would again be Nintendo exclusive.
I bought this back then on the Wii-U to show some support. Didn't play much so I may get it again on Switch
Sadly this will sell worse than Pikmin or any other deserving franchise... oh well, at least I’ll finally get my chance to play this gem. (Would have been better on Wii U, but... well, supporting it now is all I can do.)
Shouldn't had made this digital only then, that will limit sales of the game. It seems like they are just finding ways to kill this franchise. Should had just give us an HD Collection of all five FF games for $30 then throw it on every platform. By doing that at least everyone will find a favorite to play, selling them separately means you may sell a worst entry in the series and fans will just ignore it. There's a reason why Final Fantasy II is bundle with Final Fantasy I, why Devil May Cry 2 is bundle with DMC1 & 3, etc.
@CharlieGirl Good point. I hope the Japanese/Asian physical release includes English... possible, but they might try to patch it out like they did with Cotton Reboot.
So will the Switch version be the worst looking by far, as usual, or will they all essentially be at the same graphical quality and performance, given the age of the game... 🤔
EDIT: And to answer my early comment, there IS English in the physical versions (yay!), but only English voice, no English subtitles if you prefer the Japanese voice acting option (boo!).
@BlubberWhale judging by Sonic Colours the Switch version will definitely be the worst looking.
I will likely buy this on Xbox in the hope that if we do get a sequel that it will be a true next version.
@Mr-Fuggles777 That’s solid logic, and I don’t fault you for that decision, but as Switch is my only current console, I’m hoping it’s at least close to the others heh.
@BlubberWhale the official website of FF Maiden of Black Water uses Switch footage. And it doesn’t look terrible. It looks pretty good for the switch version. Looks a bit better than the Wii U version thougj
@Mr-Fuggles777 ofc it is. It isn’t as powerful as an Xbox or PlayStation.
Also if you want to know how the Switch version looks like, go to the official Maiden of Black Water website and also watch the official trailer from KT America.
And also we are not sure what happened with the rights of the franchise, but it’s very likely that Nintendo just relented on this particular title or they gave up the international rights for it. So what the 2nd statement means that Nintendo will keep publishing the Japanese version while KT will publish the English version. And I think what that means is that any remaster or remake or future entry will probably have to come to a Nintendo platform. It can come to other platforms for worldwide release but one of them has to be a Nintendo platform.
Ofc it all depends of how well the remaster will sell on all platforms
@Specter_of-the_OLED it probably won’t necessarily limit sales of the game. A few digital titles won’t hurt you. Also I am pretty sure PC players will very much want to try this game out and that is digital only too.
I saw many people online and they want to play it soon and they don’t mind if it is digital or not. A couple of digital titles won’t hurt to be fair
I really want to support the game with a physical copy for Switch & PS5 but I have to import it and by the time it arrives Halloween will be over 😔.
I'll pass on a digital purchase unless it's really cheap...
@DTfeartheBEARD That’s sort of my dilemma... although I still need to play Luigi’s Mansion 3 and a few other spookalicious games that I can’t remember right now... 🤔
That would be cool if they would get preorders here at least by the 31st, but you’re right, probably not happening.
Can't wait to play this. I'm thinking it will be extremely successful just because it's on Switch. It will look very pretty on my new Switch OLED which I'll get just a few weeks before.
@BlubberWhale Yeah I highly doubt pre-orders would arrive within a few days... lucky you because Luigi's Mansion 3 is an amazing game, perfect to play for Halloween 🎃.
A few other Horror/ Halloween games for Switch I recommend would be-
Alien Isolation
Bendy and the ink machine
Ghostbusters the video game remastered
Hollow Knight
Little Nightmares 1 & 2
Outlast 1 & 2
Remothered Tormented Fathers
Remothered Broken Porcelain
Resident Evil Revelations 1 & 2
Vampyr
Yomawari The Long Night Collection
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Zombie Army Trilogy
Potential customer says: if it is a good port, with good reviews, for a reasonable price, I'll buy it.
It's a great game, one that I think will still best be experienced on Wii U over the Switch given how the camera functioned in game, but it's great that it will be exposed to a larger audience with its Switch release.
Tecmo doing the port-begging Tecmo things again.
I can't wait to give the series a try when it comes out later this year, I played the Amnesia Collection and loved that and am eager to play more horror games, the Fatal Frame games in particular always looks so cool to me, largely because of the setting.
I'd love more Fatal Frame, I've been playing the Wii version of FF2. But tbh I'd wish I had the PS2 version instead, the gameplay has really gone downhill since Nintendo got involved.
I will get this one on steam if it's a good port, even tho it's the wealest entry in the series.
I have it on Wii U, but I'm planning to buy the Switch version in the future as well. Wanted to play it again anyway.
Would the sequel be Nintendo exclusive, though? Seems like the developers don't want the series to be Nintendo exclusive anymore. Maybe they will create a spin off or spiritual successor franchise, that's multiplat, instead?
Still won't be as good as the Wii U version as the gamepad was used really well.
I have the LE Wii U version that was released here in Australia so I'm good.
Glad others can enjoy it, shame the Wii U was such a failure.
The gamepad had so much potential when used properly
Well, then it needs a worldwide physical release, and a decent price so the fans that already got it will get it again.
I played and still have all of the games, including the 3DS spin off, an imported copy of the fourth game to play on a softmodded Wii with the fan-translation, the Wii remake of 2, and the physical on Wii U. And the first three on PS2. But I won't pay full price, I won't pay for a digital only release, I won't import,... And believe me, I DO WANT to replay it on Switch. I've been hoping for this port quite a while.
@DTfeartheBEARD are the Remothered games somewhat decently patched by now? What I saw of them looked horrible, in the wrong way.
Some other horror themed games worth looking at:
-Carrion (The Thing by John Carpenter is my favourite horror movie, and I loved the "sequel" game and would buy a remake of it in a heartbeat, but this game is like playing The Thing itself)
-Limbo, and Inside (not as much overlooked, but maybe not obviously linked to the horror genre if you don't know them. You'll love them if you like Little Nightmares 1&2)
-Zombie Night Terror (a quite funny puzzle game where you control a horde of zombies to turn everyone into zombies)
-Yuppie Psycho, and The Count Lucanor
-White Night
-The Darkside Detective (very funny point and click)
-Detention
-Bulb Boy
There's more obvious ones, many first person ones that are everything from terrible to great, but I just added some of the ones I feel are overlooked and that I personally enjoyed a lot.
I'd wish they'd look at porting the Wii sequel that never saw a Wii release. The Wii remaster of Fatal Frame 2 would also be cool to see revisited and enhanced (Europe did get that one, but us in North America never did).
@Shambo Thanks for the suggestions.
I never had any problems with Remothered Tormented Fathers on Switch, but I did buy a copy of it a while after it released. Remothered Broken Porcelain on the other hand did have a bunch of bugs when it released but has since been patched a few times. Speaking from personal experience, I didn't run into any game breaking problems playing Remothered Broken Porcelain on Switch or Xbox One X.
@Morph
Koei Techmo owns the IP. Nintendo did Co own it with them but If they fully owned it, it wouldn't be multiplat.
@GinMiguel unless something has changed in the last 18 months then I don't believe that's the case.
See this from 2020:
The series producer of Project Zero - or Fatal Frame, as the series was known outside of Europe - Keisuke Kikuchi, says that while he's open to expanding the series, it's ultimately up to IP co-holders Nintendo to decide whether or not we'll get a remake or a new instalment of the terrifying series.
"Even though I have these hopes, this is a series that Nintendo publishes for us and I only handle the development," Kikuchi told Nintendo Everything. "So even if I were to say I want to make another game, that doesn't necessarily mean that's what will happen."
@anoyonmus The PC platform is very different from the Switch though. PC had storefront like Steam which had refund option in the case if the game did sucks, on Switch it really is just a done deal whether you meant to buy the game digital or not. The only saving grace for the Switch version now is that it's region free and had a physical version available elsewhere. The Wii U version was really just a blind purchase to me cause it's digital only over here and my reliance on reviews otherwise had it was a terrible entry I would had look down on it too.
@Ayilios One of the Eternal Darkness devs is in jail and I believe he was a kiddie fiddler. Cancel culture won't let that one happen I reckon
Buying it on Steam day 1
Would buy again on Switch if a physical version magically shows up down the road.
@DTfeartheBEARD
For a moment, I honestly thought that you had ended your comment with a kiss. 😆
@Morph He did say that and they did publish the Wii U version but they aren't publishing this time. Koei Techmo is the sole publisher of the remaster now. If Nintendo published it, this would be a Switch exclusive. Thats what happens for all games they publish other then some of the mobile stuff.
@GinMiguel I know Nintendo aren't publishing it, but equally they aren't letting Koei Tecmo release this and not get anything in return. Nintendo own the IP so nothing happens with the game without Nintendo's say so. There's something in it for Nintendo, whether its a profit share or something else otherwise this doesn't get released.
@Morph I don't understand them owning it now yet it being on other platforms. Also I looked up and it says Koei Techmo is the owner of it.
@GinMiguel Nintendo owns the IP, Koei Tecmo may have ownership rights over that particular game in the series but nothing happens without agreement between the two companies.
@Morph It said Koei Techmo owns the whole series, not just maiden in black.
@GinMiguel well whatever 'it' is it's wrong
