It can be easy to get frustrated with Nintendo and the way in which it treats its legacy content – sure, you can play Super Mario Bros. on every system under the sun, but plenty of the company's more obscure titles are just impossible to enjoy legitimately these days. Thankfully, then, today's Famicom Detective Club launches are a pretty neat step in the right direction.
The two releases – Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind – were originally released for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. For the first time ever, the two titles are now playable in English, and the graphics, music, and sound effects from the original games have been given a faithful, modern upgrade.
The question is: are Switch owners interested enough to give the games a chance, and just how well will they perform? To try and figure this out, we're handing things over to you in our launch day poll. Make sure to cast your votes, and feel free to expand upon your choice in the comments below.
You can check out our full review of The Missing Heir right here, as well as our The Girl Who Stands Behind review here, if you want to learn more about them before making your decision. Remember, those of you in the US can buy one game, and then get $10 off the other on the Switch eShop!

I have no clue if I'm gonna get one of them, but they do seem pretty interesting
Got both of these.
Just have to figure out which one I should play first to have a nice evening on the couch today. :')
Not my cup of tea honestly, I'll be picking up Subnautica instead, but great for people who like this kinda thing
I want a physical version and I'm going to hold off for a while just hoping they will release one. Happy they're releasing such a niche title though.
Bought them yesterday and started the first game around 1am. Picked it up with the NSO ticket thingy and pre ordered Mario Golf with the other.
Curious what's with the dual release in America? Seems weird to be vastly different to us over in the UK.
Been enjoying the game a lot, though a missed opportunity with only being Japanese audio, mainly as I recently played through 999 again. But then there is a LOT of dialog and everything is voiced (least first few hours has been).
Wait... they're separate games?! I thought it was a combined option? If they're £50.00 each, then it's a hard pass.
I was looking forward to the dual release, but not at this price.
they're pretty wildly overpriced. They should have been 40-50$ for the pair. sadly as Switch and Switch games being in high demand is still generally good, it means Nintendo feels little pressure to play fair with prices. All these remakes are jacked up like new games, and I'm never going to support that.
@sikthvash Nah, it's for both but they're downloaded as two separate apps on the Switch homescreen
60€ is a joke in my opinion. Maybe with a reasonable sale I'll get them
I'll get them once they release as a physical edition.
I don't like Nintendo's approach of 'eshop-only releases' with their 'smaller' releases. Stretchers, box boy, picross, Good Job!, Fire Emblem come to mind.
@sikthvash The UK release is both games in one. No idea why in the states they are separated.
I bought the collection for £50 (well bit cheaper with the NSO ticket stuff) yesterday.
The poll doesn't really make sense outside of the US since they're bundled together as a single purchase here. I'll be getting them eventually but I'll wait for a sale.
I’m waiting to see if there’s a physical edition.
I'd like to get them, but £50 is more than I'm willing to pay right now. (Never mind Sony deluding themselves that I will ever pay £70.)
Need an option for "Yes, but not right away/waiting for a sale".
Nah, i'm good for now.
At some point, absolutely.
I think I'll wait. I know these games are right up my alley, but I would prefer a physical version (still hoping we'll get one). And right now I have too many games to play, so no rush to get these.
Nope. Got subnautica collection for switch and mass effect for xbox. Might get these when on sale
Been looking forward to these since they were announced. I'll be downloading both (both is the only option here anyway) and jumping into the first game as soon as I finish Atelier Sophie which I'm playing at the moment.
Between Returnal, Resident Evil 8, and Mass Effect Legacy, my Switch will continue gathering dust for the foreseeable future.
I want to get them, but the price point is just ridiculous. I’d understand if both of them combined was like $40, but $35 a piece is harsh. I mean, would both of them together really be the same value as Returnal? Just being honest here about it. I’d like to play them, but I’ll wait for a sale unless we’re seeing 10/10s on the review front across the board.
I would have gladly bought a physical edition. With digital only, I will wait for a sale.
"Thankfully, then, today's Famicom Detective Club launches are a pretty neat step in the right direction."
Oh, they aren't. There's no way I give them 60€ for a digital license. And I say this on top of my 200+ eShop purchases.
No way.
Yeah, I’m gonna get them. I love these types of games.
Option 6: Yes if it was cheaper then £50
I'm definitely in for both. These games get mentioned every now and then on Game Center CX - as well as the Portopia series and other Famicom mystery games - so I've been curious to try them for a while. I think it's worth supporting the release - maybe we'll get more like this, new localisations of other Japan-only releases, or even new games in the series.
I am worried that some of the puzzles will be dated or obtuse. I like the genre but have trouble with that sometimes. I usually need a guide, even for Lucasarts adventure games.
Was interested to try one at half-ish price, entirely unenthused to buy both at full price.
Will consider when there's a sale (or go the slightly sketchy US account route), but come-on NoE . You could've had my money already! (With a pretty good chance I'd buy the second for a similar price if I liked it).
Appreciate this is subjective, but these do not look like they're worth £50. To be honest I'd see £20 as a bit steep.
I bought both of them and I can’t wait to try them. I’m happy Nintendo is trying to localize some of their older games.
I fear picking them up only to have a later physical release in the West... will wait and see.
I love these kinds of games so I will be picking them up at next payday. Not sure why people are moaning about the price here in the UK, Nintendo have put a lot of work into these. £25 per game seems reasonable. I do wish there was a physical release though.
During a sale. No way I am going to spend 60 euros for a couple of digital-only visual novels when Nintendo didn't even bother to make a physical release. Looks like they translated the games to English and decided to make a quick buck.
No the price is way to steep for this even when they’re combined for £50 should be no more than £25
No, I want a physical version. I'm not paying more than $ 20 for digital games.
I'll be grabbing them...
Eventually.
I'm really torn. This is one of those releases I'd like to buy day one to support Nintendo's release of these niche products. However, I also want to hold out a bit to see if they release a physical product.
I think not releasing a dual pack retail version is a missed opportunity
I was really hoping for a physical release but if everyone's not buying it ,then I'm pretty sure lesson nintendo will take away is don't bother bringing niche games to the west. So digital it's probably going have to be
With 60 € i can purchase 4 books.
Nintendo are absolutely crazy for demanding such a ridiculous price (AU$90!) for a digital only release. Even half that price is too much as far as I am concerned, but I would have happily paid AU$90 (ideally a little less) for a physical edition, and considering how niche the title is, I'm more willing to show my support at full price for such releases.
I would have jumped at the Japanese special edition with the 2 CD soundtrack, but sadly, it only includes Japanese.
I am optimistic that Nintendo will see sense and issue a physical release in the latter half of the year (especially if the demand here is any indication of broader public sentiment). More than happy to import if the English release doesn't hit Australia, though I'll always support the local option otherwise.
Already started the MIssing Heir, wanted to play them in the release order ^^
@Peteykins strange that everyone screamed WHY ISN'T THIS ON Switch a few years back. I still prefer my 3ds for games like this!
Already bought the first one. If I like it, I’ll definitely get the prequel. Can’t wait to check it out later today!
I wanted them but we're not getting a physical release and they didn't include English language on the Japanese physical edition (those carts only have chinese and japanese on them). Sooooo... I probably won't be buying them. Too bad!
I'm waiting for a price drop.
@somnambulance it's technically $60 together, because they knock $10 off one of you buy the other. But it's still a lot lol
Is this series a "Point & Click" style game? If so, I'll most likely pass. If it were closer to L.A. Noire then Hotel Dusk: Room 215, I would consider.
Already bought both last night, I always like trying more niche type of game like these.
@dkxcalibur that's a tall order for what are basically prettied-up NES games
I will once life settles down enough for me to actually play something. Although I suppose by the time that happens, Skyward Sword will be out so rip I guess
Why is there no poll option for "when there's a sale"? Most of the eShop games I own came from a sale.
Because as much as I love mystery visual novels, no way am I paying THAT much for even a two-pack of them (as you can't buy them separately in Europe, a second dumb marketing decision on Ninty's part).
I definitely want to get both, but I’m holding out for now just in case they get released physically.
I bet this release is in preparation for Ayumi joining Smash Bros. Sakurai wanted to add her to Melee, after all.
I dig visual novels and localized remakes of games, so I'll bite that price bullet, no problem!
They look like something I'd enjoy, but waiting for the price to drop.
Holding out for a physical double pack. Not sure why there isn't one already announced to be honest.
Maybe. These look interesting and I want to encourage more of these sorts of games. But at the same time, I've already got a few visual novels in my backlog that I ought to play, as well as others that I'd like to buy.
It’s awesome they made this, but I feel like only Japan really cares. I don’t imagine these Famicom visual novel remakes will make much of a splash worldwide, especially as eShop releases.
No poll option for “Waiting for physical”?
Can we get an option for, "Grabbing one, might grab the other if I like it'?
(But knowing my tastes, I'll probably end up getting both.)
Is there a demo. What is the price and are there any reviews available?
Will pick up on BF.
@Kislevi03one thank you for the information.
The UK price is way to high for that sort of game. Almost double the US price. And the cost of the two games together is more expensive. OK only a penny more. But I would question the logic of that.
@Kislevi03one The prices are higher in Canada: 79,99 for the two games.
I'll definitely get them, but it'll be way later. The fact that there's no physical release for these games (outside the Japanese collector's edition) is making getting these a little difficult for me.
I'll get them at some point, maybe sometime this year, or next year, or maybe sometime this decade, I don't really care when.
I've been wanting to try these games since I got their respective trophies in Melee. They are, perhaps, a little pricey and I would have preferred a physical release, but I've got to vote with my wallet. I want Nintendo to continue to take risks and localize their more obscure games.
I buy every Famicom/Super Famicom-only games that were never released on NES/SNES that I can find. I buy them for the same reason I really want to play "Computer Space", it's history, man! The idea that these forbidden/holy grail/lost classics are available to me 40 years later is too good to be true.
Not for £50, with no English dub or physical edition.
I don't really wanna pay more then €15 per game. So eother it gets a huge discount in the future or more likely I'll never play them.
