Nintendo Switch RAM
Nintendo Switch carries 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM (Random Access Memory) running at either 1331 MHz (Handheld Mode) or 1600 MHz (Docked/TV Mode).
1GB of that is reserved for system-level operation, with games themselves making use of the reminder.

Tech specs comparison - they're the same 😉
Scalpers everywhere are celebrating!
So for the primarily docked-players...sounds like a tough sell.
I’m actually pretty interested in the enhanced audio, maybe even more so than the OLED screen.
Very interested since I play 50/50 handheld/tv mode.
I play Docked primarily, so this is a hard pass.
So almost a copy and paste
I will still be getting this as I was in the market for a new Switch system, as my launch unit is aging a bit and I'd like to do other things with it.
That doesn't make this any less disappointing though. This isn't the major improvement that the 3DS XL was over the original 3DS, or the DS Lite over the DS Phat.
I play my Switch in handheld exclusively so I might upgrade. It's a fair bit of money for a minor improvement but with how much I play the thing, it could be a worthwhile investment in the end. Going by the look of it, the flip grip should probably still fit which is a plus.
So it has a new screen.
@HamatoYoshi So should we as they might be left holding with so few improvements…
@CactusMan You really think the OLED will make a PS1 color be that different? Not judging just didn’t think this would be a showcase game…
The new kickstand is nice for people who use it since the original one is pretty terrible. But these minimal changes are a tough sell for me since I’ve primarily been playing in docked mode due to the JoyCon drift.
@Friendly
If you play portable quite a bit, it's a massive difference. Myself, not so much so.
3ds vs 3ds xl again. No thanks.
I'm a docked player. I'll pass on this.
Well I’m disappointed if I’m honest. I was at least hoping for 4k upscale, even if that was only handled by the dock - I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo’s stock price saw a fall due to this
Oh my goodness there’s a wire connection and a 7 inch screen. Oh well,Just keep bringing out the games and I’ll be OK. I don’t need this new model. I can wait. I’m not gonna lose sleep over this.
By the looks of it, the moved the air intake to the bottom edge. meaning in table mode you're blocking the intake? The back shell i snow one larger piece, which should make the new one feel more riggid.
All in all it's a classic nintendo thing to do. I wouldn't have minded that it wasn't a complete overhaul, but to not even touch upon the Tegra SoC is a poor decission and shows the "it's good enough" mindset nintendo has since forever.
They didn't even bother to add the d-pad here and really just made a inferior, yet improved switch Lite XL. Also the BT specs are false, since we can't even use it. kek
OLED great....and what? Just extra storage? Now, if they put StreetPass in it too..... especially a fully fledged StreetPass Quest 3 then I'd be right there 😂Right now I cannot justify a purchase of a Switch. I have all the Wii U ports (on Wii U) & the multi platform games I already have elsewhere.
will it fit into the old docks?
sounds like it ..right?
@RonB
Yes, if you check the FAQ for the Switch OLED, all previous and new Joy-Con and Dock accessories are compatible with the original Switch and the new OLED model.
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch-Family/Nintendo-Switch-OLED-model-/Nintendo-Switch-OLED-model--2000984.html
Which is to say, you can plug an old Switch into a new dock and enjoy the LAN port.
@RunGMhx I know what you mean, as much as I wanted a new model this doesn’t offer enough for me to justify buying one. Years ago I would’ve been all over it but now my adult voice of reason rationalises things a bit better!
RAM?!?
Still 4GB?
Battery life is the same as the previous model despite having the OLED screen which should theoretically draw less power. Perhaps I am clutching at straws but maybe Nintendo has increased the clock speed of the old chip or improved it entirely, resulting in more power draw and better performance
I would have liked a bit more power, but this is ok. With these specs, there's no way there will be exclusive games.
Basically a switch xl, but fun for all the people that love to watch the complaints roll in. One day people will learn not to get over hyped from rumours and leaks.
Mind numbingly unimpressive. All this wait and not a scrap of improved processing performance. That’s the only reason I would have wanted one.
@Broosh Very hard sell. It's a no from me as I play 95% docked. The same Tegra chip is powering it. So for docked play it dosen't make any difference whatsoever...
For heavily portable players yes it could be worthwhile but for docked players a very hard sell...
Why is it all the same people keep building up fake hype for a switch “pro” so when Nintendo releases there switch revision everyone is disappointed it’s 3D Allstars all over again 🤦♂️
@Slowdive I love the Mac style switch logo that lights up when the switch is docked
@RupeeClock This is actually the best new from the new model ... the "backwards" compatibility with the new dock
In a way I feel like Nintendo have saved me some money. If this had included any performance upgrades I would have pre-ordered it without any hesitation. As I only use it docked there is nothing here for me 🙃
I've had my Switch since launch, and it's getting a bit old and achy from all the use. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, especially for the better battery life. But I've been holding off due to the Pro rumours. Glad I did. I will happily upgrade now. I'm also super glad that the lan is now in the dock instead of taking up a USB slot.
No thanks. Guess its for people who were on the fence about buying one.
@Zuljaras
Yes, but there's also the fact that the new dock isn't sold separately.
The new Switch costs $350, which is $50 more than the standard Switch, and a USB-LAN adapter is cheaper than that.
So, it's of no benefit or advantage to anyone that plays exclusively in TV mode anyway.
@Xiovanni Isn't the OLED producing more heat than the LCD? Or I am mistaken. The OLED makes every pixel "glow" for itself. That is why the old OLEDs have burn-ins.
This is some new technology for this OLED?
@RupeeClock It is not sold separately ... at launch We will see. Also I bet that we could get nice prices second hand for the dock only
Why do I have a feeling they'll announce the "Really New" Switch next year? That's actually more powerful.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/06/random_what_if_nintendo_just_released_a_basic_switch_xl
Tom’s article makes interesting reading after the fact. He called it. Or at least clearly posited the idea. And as the polls predicted, a number of people are disappointed.
It looks as thought we’ll have to hold out until the Switch’s actual successor for a real boost in power. As things stand, for anyone purchasing a Switch now… well this is an undeniably nicer version of essentially the same piece of kit.
Scalp away scalpers. I'm not wasting my money on this pathetic "upgrade"
@TanukiTrooper The refresh has one less USB slot though so it evens out.
It's definitely a hard sell for current owners but newcomers (if there are any) it's a good alternative, I primarily play my switch handheld and have a vanilla launch console so I'll be upgrading, plus the white looks very sweet!
@RunGMhx The content someone plays in OLED is irrelevant, the image will be improved because the pixels will have true black adjusting brightness. The best example I can give is when you open Netflix in an OLED TV, you don't even need to start something to be amazed. When you see the red netflix logo in the middle of a totally black screen you will see how the "true black" makes an absurd contrast.
Nintendo is milking the cow! We will have comments about burned pixels for weeks now
Wonder why they are not advertising the significantly better battery life. :/ EDIT: Because I was comparing the original Switch, forgot the refresh had that improvement. For me personally, it would be an improvement, though.
Either way, this is a really nice option for those that value the portable over docked experience and I might just get a new dock if they ever sell it separately.
Nintendo has no need for a cheaper model or a Switch 2, sales are steady and happy.
Seems like the reasonable thing to do: udpate the main console, which is already 4 years old, and not split the user base, which is huge. My Switch is a bit busted so I'll renew it, otherwise the change wouldn't make sense, but I think that's the whole point.
I would love to know if the processing is super up, if it's Bluetooth compatible for audio and voice chat and if the wifi is improved on.
So unless I missed it, putting an original model in the new dock and vice versa with OLED model in old dock should work, correct?
The LAN port is kind of nice, since you don't need to hunt down the adapter anymore for online games like Smash Bros. Battery life is the same with the bigger screen (as the revised Switch model), which would still be an upgrade for me as I have the original model.
This isn't actually that bad a refresh. I wouldn't be going out of my way to buy it, but if something happened to my current Switch, I could see myself picking this up.
To all OLED lovers, especially who still think Vita's OLED is fantastic & far superior than LCD, and thus the new OLED Switch must be fantastic, go open duckduckgo (or google), search "Internet Archive Wayback Machine" and enter the URL below to read this article from 9 years ago:
Digital Versus - "PS Vita OLED Screen: Colour Fidelity, Sub-Pixels"
http://www.digitalversus.com/games-console/sony-playstation-vita-p12777/ps-vita-oled-screen-colour-fidelity-sub-pixels-n23993.html
TL;DR, Vita's OLED sucks, its color accuracy is terrible.
OLED doesn't automatically mean better image quality, just wait for screen test and review, also don't forget OLED burn-in issues (Static HUD Elements), and then consider to buy the OLED model or not.
EDIT: also don't forget to search about "OLED PWM eye strain" aka "OLED flickering with low brightness" before making the decisions.
So is there even any difference? I can’t even tell what’s better about the Pro.
So what’s the point if it can’t even do 4K??
@Dethmunk I would be fine with it if they kept the price the same. It’s last gen tech.
If you already have a working switch there is no point In buying this
I hate to be one of the told ya so guys on this, but I am🤡🤡
If they increased the screen size without increasing the resolution, won't it look worse?
Anyone know the price yet?
@BenAV exactly. This feels more like a refresh just because they need to diversify their hardware component sources (this being able to ship out more units during the current shortages) and then asking the end user to pay for it.
So glad it is not a Pro as the current models are doing so well. I only play in docked mode so not for me.
Switch 2 will be the 'pro' In a couple of years and I don't mind waiting.
@Enigk That's a shame. But that USB slot is already taken up on my current dock with a LAN adaptor. So not a deal breaker, just thought that would be a bonus.
Does that 0.1 extra inch in length mean it won't fit current grips like the Satisfye or Fixture S1?
Yes here we come ...and my rumor mill is working overtime...wondering where our 4K went?
I personally can't find one good reason this OLED version even exists. There's no fundamental difference in capabilities or processing power. And I definitely can't find a reason to justify the "upgrade".
Yeh... gonna pass on this....
I absolutely knew people were hyping up the "pro" too much. This is just about what I expected them to release, a side grade to their popular console. Almost like the 3DS XL. It's unfortunate that dock only players aren't really getting anything out of this. Just buy a Ethernet adapter for your normal switch.
I just want to know if it will run games better at least for games that struggle on the switch like Links Awakening and Hyrule Warriors age of calamity. I knew this was going to be just a 3ds xl or "New 3ds" to the 3ds situation. That this was no way going to be the next gen thing or some crazy upgrade that forces 1st party games to be exclusive to it.
Did joycons improved on the problems like drift? Did they fixed something? Did joycon battery life improved?
It's not in the comparison.
while there are a few great additions to this, i'll probably just hold off from getting this and keep the Original Switch.
@Savino Fair enough. I imagine in a scenario where maybe your console breaks that the OLED would be more appealing, but even then getting a repair/replacement will likely still be cheaper.
Well my wife and I decided this is not worth the money. We are fine with OG switch. Maybe the next remodel.
@BANJO Agreed. I honestly spend an equal amount of time playing docked/handheld and even then this thing should have just been a replacement for the current Switch console, not a more expensive alternative model.
I couldnt be less interested nor more disappointed. Who is this even for?
Disappointing, but not unexpected. I am sure all the "leakers" will use this as proof they were right about the Switch Pro. Fun fact: Releasing this new minor hardware revision is almost proof there won't be a technically superior Pro model in the near future!
I couldn't be more disappointed. Nintendo is like Disney Star Wars; hardly ever giving the fans what they really want. Sigh...
@TanukiTrooper They give with one hand and take away with the other.
Of course Nintendo fails at the opportunity. Pass for me. Guess I'm getting a PS5.
Thanks for helping me save more money, Nintendo! Easy pass for me! What a pointless upgrade.
@thaimbomb Read up on CMOS batteries before making that investment....
I got one of the newer switch models with better battery life when the Animal crossing one was released. There would be no sane reason for me to purchase this model. My money would be better spent just upgrading my SD card from 400GB to one or two sizes up
As a primarily docked at home player this is not an upgrade that will instantly interest me. Nice upgrade for people that like to play in portable mode.
At first I was a bit surprised at the lack of 4k upscale but that's only because I listened to rumours.
I wonder if having the LAN connector Nintendo see mileage in getting more graphically intensive games via streaming?
As a primarily handheld player this still does not interest me, which I think sums it all up
Will replace my launch Switch with this, only because the screen started to "peel" out from the corner after a month from use, it hasn't gotten any worse fortunately, but by goodness it's the worst build quality product Nintendo produced.
@SpringDivorce I play portably most of the time but the differences sound rather negligible to me. 😅 I'm acquainted with OLED as a Vita user, it's nice but never dealbreaker nice, and I'm also an NDS user which means Switch screen always feels massive in comparison as it is, with or without that extra inch. Even 32 more Gb of internal memory don't excite an unapologetic eShop hoarder who has his 512 Gb card almost constantly filled to the brim. Mileage is a harsh mistress.
@IndoorHero Agreed, bluetooth headphones are standard now. It feels so juxtapositional to see a piece of hardware use USB-C and not have bluetooth capability.
As nice as the OLED screen might be I’ll pass on this. It’s nice but I play more on my TV and I can’t justify buying a new Switch just for a screen upgrade on a console I only use in handheld mode like 20% of the time. It’s a neat option for newcomers, though.
@RonB the website said it would. so hopefully if you don’t care about the new dock and don’t want to spend an additional 350 dollars you can just buy the screen.
So apart from the very slightly larger screen is there any point to this? Is OLED that much of an improvement?
From what I remember my original ps vita used an OLED screen and it had horrible black splotches when the screen went black
@aaronsullivan "and I might just get a new dock if they ever sell it separately."
Buys new dock, finds out LAN port is old 10 speed they had laying around. 😉 It's 2021, shouldn't the LAN specs say 10/100 or gigabit? I'll guess it's only 10/100 b/c Nintendo servers are too slow for giga to matter anyway, but gigabit to the home is a thing now. Nintendo will market it as "fast" b/c technically 10/100 is. 😝
This seems like what I've been expecting, 64GB FTW!, but selling Switch for $299 for 4 1/2 years only to have this come out now for $349 w/ such similar innards seems like a bit of an ask. How far away is Switch 2 so I can finally get a new MK after 9 years? 24 to 30 months after this, tops, holiday '23 or March '24. I can see us waiting.
Switch won't be able to get 3rd party PS5 & Series X/S ports once they stop supporting the last gen in a couple of years. This is just underwhelming. And I'm happy for it, probably no OLED exclusives, that's a big win in my book. 👍
Already bracing myself for the pre-ordering horror.
Would have appreciated a bit more of an upgrade for TV Play but this will do nicely.
@RupeeClock @Tom-Nook
thanks for the anwers !
I would like to keep using my old docks and with the new one I would have 1 spare for travelling...so I am already justifying the purchase of this new shiny thing🤓
I'm only interested in the dock since it has a built in LAN adaptor, besides that the system is basically the same so I'll stick with my original one. I may reconsider in the future though.
Will it have better looks in handheld mode than normal Switch?
@UltimateOtaku91 THANK YOU!!! My OLED Vita, as beautiful as the screen is, has black smudges as well when the screen is lit but black. I could never find anyone online that knew what I was referring to. Glad someone else discovered this.
So happy I got my AC Switch last year now I know this model doesn’t have any huge upgrades! Glad the larger screen and bigger memory is an option for people wanting to buy it, but I’ll be sticking with my regular model for a while longer. Might be tempted to pick up the OLED if they make a Zelda themed one for BOTW2
@Little_Squee I don’t think so? I think it’s still 720p in handheld, sadly ☹️
They forgot a category
Joycon DRIFT:
Standard - Present
Lite - Present
OLED - Present
It looks like the report from late May on the new Switch was largely correct about what this would have. That report was right about the LAN port, screen, etc. It did report that the USB would be 3.0, but that does not appear to be the case.
Let's hope scalpers don't ruin this for people who are interested, but this is a new era for that sort of thing. I expect they'll target this product and try to manipulate the price of it as they do.
No wonder they didn't call it "new" switch. Nothing new here...
Could you please not use stupid measures?
Anything about price?
You forgot to highlight that the new switch is slightly longer (hence why the dock is slightly longer). And that impacts Labo compatibility.
Literally just bought a replacement Switch on Friday. so definitely not gonna buy this OLED version since it's basically identical and I play docked.
@CottoneeSocks I see. Thanks for replying.
No 4K? Personally no reason to buy then.
Cool! But when’s the Switch Pro coming out?
You should add the price to the comparison.
OLED Model is £309.99 / $349.99 [Nintendo Store]
@RCGamer $350 US for the OLED Switch.
i am looking very foward to this upgrade. the bigger screen. everything seesms right. if i want 4k and all that other stuff. the Switch 2 is going to be the big upgrade. i am very happy with this.
Let me take a wild guess: the ridiculous joy cons are the same, aren't they?
Surprised its the same battery... either way, I need a new Switch, might as well upgrade.
Pretty much the same.
@Pokester99 I do own both too, both bought in Japan, bought my OLED phat new unused 3 years after I bought my LCD slim day one when it released.
What I think is that "vividness" is a personal preference thing, I totally agree and respect many people think OLED is more "vivid".
But that doesn't mean OLED has better color accuracy or suffers no issues at all in comparison with LCD.
People tend to prefer bright over-saturated images (like food photos with filters applied), there's nothing wrong with this, but this doesn't mean OLED is superior.
Eye candy is an easy sell, that's why many new techs are using OLED, not because it's superior.
For people prefer higher contrast, "vivid" image, doesn't care or doesn't notice burn-in and flickering, OLED is a good choice.
For people care about burn-in and flickering, like me, just go LCD.
(About color accuracy, OLED could produce accurate color too, but Vita's is not, and many manufacture won't calibrate the screen to make it accurate, because there are more people care about "vividness" than "accuracy")
What I'm trying to say here is, if you know what you like and you know the pros & cons of LCD and OLED, go buy what you like.
But if you don't know, and think OLED is superior in every way, better do the homework first before give your money to Nintendo to buy this new model.
@IndoorHero Disagree completely. Once you start meaningfully changing the internals, you create two separate ecosystems of gamers, and that never works out well.
This isn't meant to be some new Switch that everyone upgrades from. This is for people looking to buy a Switch, either first timers or people whose Switch died for whatever reason, and they get refreshed hardware, but fundamentally the same Switch gaming experience as everyone else.
I am pumped for ethernet built into the dock, as I'm looking for another dock for my game room, since the main dock stays in the family room all the time.
The docks is what I' mainly interested in. I hope it's a gigabyte LAN port. It would be a huge plus.
The thing isn’t even bigger? Why?
@John_Deacon
The question is, why wouldn't they?
I was hoping they’d add a few more game card slots
@Broosh
It pretty much excludes me. I think 5% of my playtime is handheld. Otherwise I’m on the TV.
At the end of the trailer, you see they still want to sell the Old Switch, New OLED, and Lite. This is very confusing. The OLED screen should have gone in the Lite, because that screen actually matters. The new 'Pro' model (marketed to older PS and Xbox types) should have had the overclocked Tegra chip and 4K checkerboard upscaling for cleaner docked performance. Nintendo product line is a bit of a mess now and most people are just going to wait for the eventual Switch 2.
@RupeeClock The only downfall with only using an adapter is the USB LAN adapters only go to 100mbps, because the dock only uses USB 2, not 3.
I also have issues where the adapter doesn't connect after removing the switch from the dock, so it's a bit of a hassle.
My Switch from 2017 is still perfectly fine and I would love to have the built in ethernet option, but not for $350.
This was a bit underwhelming honestly… since I’m still rocking the OG Switch the better battery and brighter/ nicer screen are enticing but I don’t know if this is going to be something I buy into unless my current one isn’t usable. I think if Bluetooth audio was present and the price was reasonable I might’ve considered the upgrade.
Well, I don’t feel this is a day one pickup anymore. My OG Switch from 2017 is working just great. I’ll probably trade it in for this one when the inevitable hysteria dies down in a year😂
@BloodNinja
I’m not worried about that issue.
I don’t keep consoles anymore. I’m not a collector and I don’t have the room.
I sell or trade in an old console to fund the new one.
The CMOS will last about 20-25 years. PS6 will probably launch six years from now. Not a problem for most of us.
I love my PS5. Absolutely love it.
Big problem with the new dock is now if I wanted to use a gamecube adapter AND a gamecube controller that plugs into USB I'd be screwed. This is only a problem if I would have a ton of people playing, but still
@ModdedInkling They drift due to bad design (or weak materials) and therefore should be revised and fixed for a new version
Look, I'm a simple guy, I don't ask for much. But would it KILL Nintendo to give us some extra RAM on the system? You can only go so far with 2 GB of RAM. You already doubled the Storage Space (Which still is kind of small for some games) so could we have SOME sort RAM Upgrade? I would like more RAM and/or speedier RAM.
@T0mizawa
Spot on post.
For my phone, I love OLED. OLED works with phones because burn in isn’t an issue since the screen is constantly off and on.
For a gaming device that has static images like HUDs, give me LCD any day of the week. Same goes for my TVs.
They both have their use cases. But I never got the whole “we have to put OLED screens on everything” movement considering how easy it is to suffer burn in.
@CheekyZelda It is a little bit bigger
Weight was the one improvement I wanted to see in the flagship model. Too bad it gained weight
@IndoorHero OLED is more energy efficient than lcd so it probably will have a better life. The bigger screen might cancel that but I think it would still have an improved battery life.
So would buying just the new dock give us old Switch owners ethernet without a usb adapter?
I wanted HDR in Dock Mode, but:
Positive
1) Double the storage
2) An OLED screen.
3) Better audio in portable mode. Possibly surround enhancements?
4) Built in Lan Port
Neutral
1)Better kick stand
It is worth $50 to $60 more.
I wouldn't pay any more.
Still would like to know if the HDMI port is still 1.4 or 2.0a or higher.
2.0a or higher is needed for HDR in TV mode, though is unnecessary on a OLED screen in portable mode.
@carlos82 and 2 years after this theyll release another switch with same specs and a tiny expensive add on
i actually like the LAN port. i have a launch-day Switch so maybe I'll upgrade.
@Shoyomon
Before 2 years the OLED model will lower in Price & replace the regular model.
They'll phase the regular model out, eventually.
@Double-L You're the only one I've found who has commented on this and I can't find anything about it online yet. The logo lighting up on the dock seemed to happen in the middle of gameplay, not when the Switch was popped into the dock. I'm wondering if it always glows or if it's an indicator of something, like an online invitation or when your friend hops online or something along those lines. I will be very interested to learn more.
I never actually thought that a Pro model would make an actual difference, as there are already nearly 100 million switches out there; developers, even with the extra graphical power, would be shackled to those specs. That aside, I was looking at the Joy Cons throughout the trailer, & they appear to be the same crappy joycons that I know & love, which if the case, is immensely insulting & lazy.
@John_Deacon
But it shouldn't be something expected to be associated with the new Switch model. It's universally used on the LCD Switch and Switch Lite. If they did that, you would HAVE to buy the OLED Switch to get better Joy Cons, and that would piss more people off.
New console revision ≠ Better controllers. The two don't correlate.
Removed - flaming/arguing
#dockedboyz stay up !
Wait, does this seriously still not support Bluetooth headphones? What are you playing at Nintendo?
There really is basically nothing new about it aside from external cosmetics. I'm shocked that the specs are basically the same. I was considering getting it as an upgrade, now I'm not so sure.
I'll save the readers some time - it's 90% the same under the hood, just a cleaner OLED screen that you won't see when it's docked, no performance upgrades whatsoever from V2. Hot trash.
Can't help but feel like Nintendo have missed a trick here.
Better screen, check
Better audio, check
Better kickstand, check
Better battery life, check (although they had already revised this)
That's all nice but they could have:
Increased the onboard storage to at least 128GB if not 256GB
Enabled Bluetooth headphones (or even USB-C)
Boosted the processor and or RAM even if only to give existing games a basic performance boost
Issued a new left joy-con with a Dpad
Imagine it exclusively came with folders?
@TheRedComet If you don’t keep consoles, I would imagine why that’s not a problem for you. I wish I had disposable income such that I can circulate a games console with each new iteration!
What a waste of time! Classic Nintendo!
I was thinking on upgrading but it looks like Nintendo just save me 350 bucks, feels great having that money to spend 🙂
Okay, this will be a no buy from me, of it had at least more speed and power at least a litle bit.
Apparently the new system won't have new CPU or RAM according to Nintendo:
https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1412432047168278528
GPU was not mentioned, interestingly...
Not sure if this has already been asked, but will the OLED model work in an original dock? I have 2 docks for my original switch, and I know the original Switch will work in the new dock but what about vice versa?
I agree with their decision to not show it at e3. The rumours were too much and wouldnt live up to the expectations. The only thing I like is the color and the new dock but Im def not 'upgrading'. I need to save up anyway. July is exhausting my reserves..
Never knew that bit about the humidity. We're lucky if it dips below 80% here on the Atlantic coast...
@rjejr Yeah, I won't be getting this. Just the Ethernet port. Even my son who is the one that plays it portable the most was happy with what we had after seeing the trailer. We are both ready for a performance boost for our Nintendo favorites and we'll be waiting longer for that. Meanwhile, we are totally stoked for Metroid Dread as we are big Metroid fans both 3D and 2D.
Nintendo just has no motivation to try and push through chip shortages with some dramatic performance upgrade to a console which is still selling like crazy. They are back to raking in the dough. I'm hoping that Miyamoto comes back (from Universal Parks) and lights a fire to get some crazy quirky Nintendo games over the next couple of years.
@aaronsullivan We're not big quirky game players in my house, we like Mario Kart, and it's been 7 years since the last real MK game. And I doubt Switch will get 9, so the sooner we get a next gen Switch the better for us. And we like 3D Mario, but we probably don't get 1 of those until Switch 2 either. Though we'll get SMG2 DX for $60 next year. 😝
On the bright side, we wont' miss any games not upgrading, and we can buy a PS5 and play on that for a couple of years while we wait for Switch 2. Come to think of it Switch 2 doesn't launch until after both of my kids are away at college so Switch may be my last Nintendo console unless 1 of them moves back home. Oh well, guess I was never meant to play Pikmin 4 anyway.
Smart kid. Not sure how mine feel, they both go to bed at 5AM and wake up at 3 or 4 so I won't speak to them until dinner. But they probably agree w/ us.
Huge missed opportunity by Nintendo to extend the life of this console by not upgrading the processor.
The one and only thing I was holding out for was a better CPU with possible 4K support. Never have and never will play the switch undocked so this doesn't interest me whatsoever.
All the comparisons so far from Switch to OLED are the newer switch version, I still have OG, this is a big battery life bump for anyone that has the OG also.
I want to know if the Flip Grip will fit the new machine, or if a new variation will have to be made. Still my favorite peripheral, I hope it won't require a new version to be manufactured.
(Edit: Sounds like a new version would have to be manufactured. Boo.)
kinda wish they could get a 5000mah battery in there. It'd definitely make battery nuts like me just eat it up!
@RupeeClock Except you gotta know that if you already own a Switch the new one will net you near zero additional benefits over what you have now.
You stated you'd like to do other things, but from what I have read there is no performance increases on the OLED model, so your abilities are much more the same as they are now.
This unit wasn't designed for upgrades, it was designed for Nintendo to hit those that don't already have ne while increasing their ability to produce and very possibly even lower cost. Otherwise, why do it? It's not like it is for consumers.
@THENAMESNORM Unless Nintendo found a way to mark it as a non-supported dock (don't think they would) it is just a USB C passthrough in the dock for the most part with hub for USB/HDMI. Should be no reason it wouldn't work.
@CactusMan Except for looking at Nintendo's own comparison on their site the new OLED model isn't marketed for better battery life unless you are still repping an OG Switch. Even then, hard to justify. The new model Switch and the OLED model have same estimated battery. They estimate 5.5 with Zelda BOTW with either console.

@BeardedSquash At this point I would settle for 1080p in handheld. Maybe 4K from the dock but I will be honest I am not terrible too upset at lack of 4K. Especially with most TVs being able to upscale to 4K and it looking good enough. The games that the Nintendo is made for don't really demand 4K resolution imo.
At this point though, if they keep the 720p but made it able to browse the eShop without me hating every part of the experience or dreading even opening it I would settle.
I wonder what's holding back from upgrading USB 2.0 to USB 3.0
@Petew I was wondering this exact thing because I use a Fixture S1. I'd be willing to upgrade for the OLED screen but I bet many grip accessories will no longer work.
@kalosn Especially one software update did activate the USB 3 port & after a couple of years they replaced that port with a lan port in the new dock instead.
@nhSnork
I hear you on the memory card situation - currently 32gb of my 512 left.... I've just picked up a few of the larger games on PS4 (Panxer Dragoon Remake was a big one) just to make room on there!
@Dethmunk
Exactly, you'd think the PS4 slim / Xbox 1S were a thing listening to some on here....
@Dethmunk
Well, there are some things that might be added just with an update. For example there are ways to make a program upscale to 4k. Sure, that is not gonna be a real 4k resolution but at least in a dock mode, the picture will look much better.
At my opinion, Nintendo could add achievement system already. That is just a "must have" thing in a modern world.
Why do u think the market is not ready? What do u mean? Do u think that USB 3.0 and bluetooth audio is something extraordinary?
Some things to think about - if the heat output from OLED is lower would it allow for a clock speed increase?
4 inches high, which is the exact same dimension as the regular Switch, means that it'll fit in my flip grip. OLED shmups here I come.
A year ago I would have been all over this. But in a world with a pandemic in progress I hardly travel at all and almost exclusively now play docked.
Fairly clever eliminating the black border from the old model created enough room for a bigger screen without altering the body shape. Almost like they had spec'ed for this model from the beginning but were waiting until the cost was more profitable.
I wonder if the OLED model will fit existing carry cases, given that it's only 0.1 inches wider than the standard Switch, and the other dimensions appear to be the same?
OLED does nothing good for Switch other then cost more to sell the same amount of units. If that was OLED 4K DLSS that be different but looks like one step forward and 2 steps stumbling backwards. This will come to pass as a pasay unit not something that will push the envelope to more acceptance of the Switch as a got to console. That's what they missed out here.
@Kawaiipikachu Really? I must know more.
@Dethmunk
DLSS is not possible on Switch with the common processor and chipset because for DLSS we need to have DP (Deep Learning) with tensor cores. At my opinion, they can reach 4K with SR (Super Resolution) using program method only. I do not agree that TV's upscaling is a way. I also have a modern TV (2020 QLED Samsung) but even with a TV upscale, games on 65+ inch display looks not as good as for example chess-way 4k rendering.
Absolutely agree that Switch sales are "on top" and people are still buying this console "like hell". Unfortunately that can be the motivation not to make serious upgrades...
Trust me, even when you make thousands of consoles, USB 3.0 is not a "heavy cost" any more for such a giant like Nintendo. There are plenty of accessories we can find that need 3.0 speed. OK, now we will have a Ethernet port but we do not even know the speed of the network card. Right now I am using LAN adapter but as far as there is only USB 2.0, the speed cannot be faster than 100 mb/s. I have over 800+ switch games and its a "nightmare" to download or update it. There are games which are already up to 30gb size and switch download extremely slow. At the same time my XSX downloading with a maximum speed I have at my place. The same story with PS5 (worse than XSX but still...). I really need faster downloading speed on my Switch. Also when you change a console, you have to download your games again and again. You cannot just place your sd into a new switch with a library that was downloaded on a previous console.
R u serious about pointless bluetooth audio? In 2021? I use my Samsung galaxy bugs every day for EVERYTHING. Laptop, smartphone, nintendo switch (with adapter), stationary PC and its VERY comfortable just to switch between devices without even taking the bluetooth headphones out... I do not want to carry extra cable headphones only because Nintendo is using such a conservative politics. For example they can add this option only in portable mode, when joycons are not using the bluetooth channel.
P.S. English is not my mother tongue, sorry if I made some stupid grammar mistakes.
@rjejr You are interested in Mario Kart, 3D Mario, and Pikmin. Tell me those games are not quirky. I mean, it's Nintendo, and their brand of gaming is well known and maybe normalized now, but it's all part of Nintendo doing the unexpected whether gamers like it or not. They do their own thing and it shows in the personality and design decisions in their games.
Sorry about the all-nighter schedules. Typical teenager stuff and I'm dealing with it — today, even — with my daughter, but even when I could handle it, it was never really worth it — well, maybe a few times.
yawn
Don't see a real reason to upgrade. And, $350 for a console with a 2015 CPU & GPU combo?? C'mon! Get real.
NOTHING instead of innovation.
They had an opportunity to make an actual pocket friendly portable console with the ability to dock with a tv. But instead they 'wowed' us with a wired lan port and a slightly bigger OLED screen. I am a 'got to have the latest tech' fiend and even I wont even consider upgrading. The original switch was never something I could ever carry outside my house, it being the heaviest and largest 'portable' console ever made. What use to I have for a bigger OLED screen with a device that is even heavier and larger than the 2015 device? The switch lite doesn't even work properly with one person using the console as a controller and another using a portable gamepad. Most games require two wireless gamepads and don't recognize the built in controller as a separate controller from a wireless one. Just try it and see. I cannot play street fighter with a friend while I'm out unless I carry TWO wireless controllers, I cannot use an 8bitdo zero two controller and the built in controller. I must have 2 8bitdo two controllers. Instead of adding meaningless tech, they should have made the switch more accessible to more people in more use cases. I'm sticking with my android phone with two controllers because its the only portable gaming solution there is since the psp go and gameboy micro.
