Re: New Code Found in Unreal Engine 4 Further Reinforces Claims of Handheld / Docked Power Gap with Nintendo Switch

MetaRyan

@kobashi100 Hi, I'm one of those people.
The difference with this report is that you can actually look right now in Unreal Engine 4's code and see these settings.
The issues I have with the Eurogamer report is that A) the author used a fallacious VentureBeat article to back up the original sources, and B) there's no way to know who the original sources are. (Not to mention claiming the Switch uses a stock Tegra X1 when Nvidia's official report makes a custom chip more likely.)
Edit: It's common sense that the Switch won't be as powerful in portable mode than console mode. Running the Switch at full power undocked would burn through both the battery life and possibly the Switch itself (and anyone holding it), not to mention the fact the smaller screen resolutions are easier to render. I don't understand why people are having issues with that.

Re: New Code Found in Unreal Engine 4 Further Reinforces Claims of Handheld / Docked Power Gap with Nintendo Switch

An interesting thing to note here is that this engine automatically scales not only the quality of the rendered image, but actual rendered objects, such as view distance, shadows, textures, and effects. While that does show that simply reducing the rendered image quality doesn't provide enough of a drop in power use and heat for a portable, it does give us hope for a decent battery life, not to mention bringing up ease of developing again.
(And there will be no excuse for "docked-only" games!)

Re: Pachter Says Switch is the Easiest of the Big Three to Develop For

MetaRyan

I'd imagine it's easy to develop games for the Switch. It supports Unreal Engine 4, Unity, various OpenGL APIs, not to mention APIs that the PS4 and Xbox One don't even support, such as ARM-based ones, Vulkan (Vulkan!), and Nintendo/Nvidia's own NVN API.
(Edit: Speaking of Vulkan, NL hasn't reported that the Switch will support Vulkan yet.)

Re: Eurogamer Report Suggests Nintendo Switch GPU Runs 60 Percent Slower When Undocked

MetaRyan

Guys, it's called a rumor for a reason. Several parts of the "leak", most notably using a proven-false VentureBeat article as a second source, raise red flags. I don't think this leak is accurate.
And even if it is accurate, most people seeing this leak don't understand tech enough to form any opinion on these specs. Wait until January, guys, and see what this system is capable of running.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Power Debate is Back - Report Suggests It Won't Quite Match PS4

MetaRyan

"Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards."
The world's top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards use the Pascal architecture. That seriously undermines the validity of this rumor.
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
(Not that it would be a bad thing if this rumor was true. It's just that there are a lot of incorrect generalizations in the rumor. Perhaps the info behind the rumor is accurate, and the author just didn't know enough about what he was talking about to make a coherent article.)

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Will Rely on Switch Word of Mouth Due to Strange Presentation Timing

MetaRyan

Seeing as the press events are at times convenient to their respective regions, it doesn't really matter when the initial reveal is. You could even argue that America would be hurt the worst by this because the news would have to fight to stay viral overnight, while in Europe the major sites will have it covered within 3-6 hours.
I thought it was funny reading these comments, though. I honestly expected a lot of them to be angry since the article was written in part to invoke an angry response to the timing, but most people seem to be fine with the time, and if they aren't, they realize they don't need to see it live.

Re: Talking Point: The Nintendo Switch Pitch - A Jack of All Trades

MetaRyan

The appeal of the Switch for me is that it works as both a home console and a portable console. In college, my roommates and I like playing multiplayer games like Smash, but all we have right now is a Wii. At the same time, I also want to be able to have a portable console so I can play it wherever I want if either people are studying, or someone's using the TV for something, or if I want to play a game on campus. It'll also be nice for when I'm home in the summer, because my dad likes to use the TV a lot. Assuming January 12th goes as expected, I'll be preordering a Switch as soon as preorders are live.

Re: Analyst Firm Notes Hype For Switch, But Worries Nintendo Is "Not Prepared" To Take Advantage

MetaRyan

@DanteSolablood @gcunit Even if the Nintendo Switch underperforms at launch, I would argue that it would be better for Nintendo to produce more systems than less. Although the NES Classic's stock issues has created a lot of free demand and advertising, the same strategy can't work for the Switch because the Switch itself isn't the main money-maker here at launch. Nintendo needs a large userbase in order to secure third parties, which will help its performance, and also to sell first-party games to. Games are Nintendo's main money-makers. Having too much stock isn't as bad for Nintendo's bottom line (and future) as not having enough stock is.
The only reason scarcity is effective for the NES Classic is because Nintendo makes all its money upfront. It doesn't make any money from new game purchases for the NES Classic because there are no new games for it, so it doesn't matter how many units it sells. Nintendo still makes money either way.

Re: Analyst Firm Notes Hype For Switch, But Worries Nintendo Is "Not Prepared" To Take Advantage

MetaRyan

At the very least, I hope that:
1. There will be pre-orders for the Switch
2. Every pre-order site will be limited to maybe 2 systems per customer
3. Nintendo makes a decent number of Switches. I can see why they underestimated the demand for a box with a bunch of 30-year-old games, most of which no one is going to play anyway, but since this is their main system, they need to understand just how many people want this, and how crucial getting enough systems into homes ASAP is for their own software sales, along with ensuring 3rd party support.

Re: Pokémon Sun and Moon Led Black Friday Game Sales, NES Mini Among 'Most Likely' to be Out of Stock

MetaRyan

I can see how the NES Mini wasn't expected to sell as well as it did ($60 for a bunch of 25-30 year old games, most of which the average consumer will probably never play). However, the New 3DS shortages make me angry because all the online shops started selling them a full day before they advertised they would, and with Sun/Moon Nintendo should have expected high sales and either stocked more or sold it for a higher price.

Re: Guide: The Top Nintendo Black Friday 2016 Deals in the US

MetaRyan

Darn scalpers. The Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy New 3DS "Black Friday" sales are sold out online. Looks like they started selling early, and now all the Amazon prices are scalpers selling it for $150+. Luckily, it looks like Target's and GameStop's don't actually start until they said they would, so hopefully I can get one there before it sells out.

Re: GameStop Says Nintendo Switch "Intent To Buy" Matches That Of The Xbox One

MetaRyan

Guys, I think some of you aren't reading this correctly, or maybe this article doesn't get this across well. 27% of those surveyed ("hardcore/moderate gamers", essentially) said that they both knew about and planned to buy a Nintendo Switch. Sure, the Xbox One didn't start off well, but if Nintendo has matched Xbox's pre-launch intent-to-buy percentage without actually giving any specifics on their console, that's an impressive feat indeed.

Re: Random: You Can High-Five Your Pokémon in Sun and Moon

MetaRyan

Guys, get this game. It's incredible. Shoot, I wish I could say more, but please buy this game. I mean, I really wanted a Pokémon Z, but now I'm completely sold on this gen. The story is great, but the characters are just tremendous. If there is in fact a fleshed out 3rd game for the Switch like the rumors say, I will pre-order that game day one, even if I don't have a Switch by then I will get one. That or a Sun 2 and Moon 2. At the very least I will be watching the anime regularly.

Re: NVIDIA CEO Talks Up 'Incredible' Nintendo Switch

MetaRyan

@rjejr Keep in mind that the architecture the GameCube used was also used by the Wii and Wii U, so that's around 15 years of life. The Switch using cutting-edge ARM-based architecture would imply that Nintendo's going to be sticking with it for a while, since the ARM (mobile) market is growing. I would even say that it'll last longer than the x86 based architectures of the PS4 and Xbox One, since the x86 has a shrinking market.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Praises "True Innovation" Of Switch, Teases "Surprise" Game In Development

MetaRyan

You know, maybe Ubisoft isn't that bad. They only stopped supporting the Wii U so much because of low sales, and I think they realized that they ruined Rayman Legends' sales by making it multiplatform. Based on current hype, assuming the rest of the pre-release news is what we expect, the Switch will sell tremendously well at launch, and Ubisoft will be right there supporting it.

Re: Talking Point: Ports vs. Sequels On The Nintendo Switch

MetaRyan

I'd also like to point out that Smash 4 and Mario Kart 8 were seen as near-perfect games, and much better than their previous installments. Why put a bunch of time and effort into making a brand new game when a port with some fixes is highly likely to be a better game? Smash 4 could add the 3DS stages and modes, and maybe add some new characters. Mario Kart 8 could have that dual-item mechanic seen in the Switch trailer, along with new characters, tracks, and a fixed battle mode. Plus, those are two more low-effort games to add to the Switch launch window, and it would drive a lot of early sales of the Switch.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Reportedly Use USB-C for Charging, But Dock May Not Support External Hard Drives

MetaRyan

Guys, the only reason why modern games can be up to 50GB is because they tend to have a bunch of pre-rendered cutscenes and uncompressed audio. If you compress the audio and use in-engine cutscenes, you're looking at something closer to 10-20GB, and that's not even optimizing the game itself. Most AAA games ported to the Switch (assuming there isn't much internal memory) would be around 6-15GB.

Re: Talking Point: The Nintendo Switch May Divide Opinion, But It's Made a Splash

MetaRyan

I think targeting millenials was a wise choice. For some reason, especially on YouTube, the millenial demographic is the "cool" demographic, with both teens and pre-teens trying to be, act like, and buy the same things as millenials. Despite previous Nintendo consoles being targeted at all ages (Wii U especially), in this day and age "all ages" means "for kids", and even kids think they're too old for kid-targeted stuff. By targeting millenials, Nintendo is more easily able to win over the most influential age group on the internet, and then it becomes a lot easier to win over kids and teens afterwards. (Despite it not being much of an issue to the average consumer, Nintendo really should allow Lets Plays of their games as well, because if they don't, the popular YouTubers will whine and then everyone below 18 will have a reason to dislike the Switch.)

Re: Nintendo Won't Be Making Any Game or Spec Related Switch Announcements Until 2017

MetaRyan

That gives us 2 1/2 months to ride the Holiday wave, plus Pokemon Sun and Moon will be taking up over half of that. Then, we get the grand build-up to launch starting in January. Although I wish I could get my hands on a console right now, I realize Nintendo still has to make a profit over the holidays. Their strategy is smart; rabid enthusiasts like us will stop speculating with no information, and the average consumer won't be thinking too much about it over the Holidays, so Nintendo still makes money.
Edit: Okay, we'll still speculate, but we'll be satisfied with this launch trailer and any 3rd-party announcements in the meantime.
