Re: Feature: Five Nintendo Franchises We'd Love to See As Movies

MetaRyan

Kid Icarus would be a great candidate thanks to the quality characters it already has. I could see the events of Uprising either being a trilogy of movies (1-9, 10-17, 18-25) or a season or two of an animated show, and that's not even touching new storylines. (Man, we need a sequel.)

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto and Yugo Hayashi Discuss Star Fox Zero's Development

I haven't actually tried the controls yet, but:
If the controls enhance the game, and/or make it more fun to play, then by all means, use them. The problem comes in when it divides the players into two camps. Regardless of your opinion of the controls, a large number of people, especially reviewers, had trouble with the controls. Are they close-minded? Maybe. But still, the controls to a game shouldn't be a barrier to enjoyment for such a large chunk of players. With Splatoon, it sounds like 99% of people got the hang of the controls eventually, but this game, it sounds more like 50-75%. That's not enough.
Another point: using rough, probably inaccurate math, the graphics could have been 50% better or more without that second screen displaying another view. They could have just made a better-looking lowerscreen UI from Star Fox 64 3D, and sure, the controls might not be as good, but all of a sudden, the controls stop being a barrier to enjoyment, the graphics get a lot better, and perhaps the campaign could have been longer. That's saying nothing about competitive multiplayer. It would take a game with a 69 or so on Metacritic to a minimum of 80. And it would give the general uninformed public one less excuse to hate on Nintendo.

Re: Rumour: ROM Chip Maker Macronix Drops Hint Nintendo Could Be Abandoning Optical Storage For NX

MetaRyan

Speaking of cost: Bulk high-quality 32GB SD cards could be as cheap as $4-5 (with 64GB being around $10). Bulk Blu-Ray disks (which have a memory limit [50GB or so]) are about $0.80-$1. Plus, the price of SD cards has been dropping steadily. So let's say cards would cost $4 more than disks. Sure, it would be slightly less convenient for the publishers and developers (of course, Nintendo needs to win them back, so...), but if we look at bulk optical drives vs bulk memory card readers, the difference is at least $40. So, you'd have to buy 10 games before the higher price of the carts equals the money saved by not having an optical drive. That would help get NXs into people's homes. This could be the difference between a $349 and a $299 console. Plus, solid-state/flash storage is way faster than disk-based storage, so that will help with performance too.

Re: Review: Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition (3DS eShop / GBC)

MetaRyan

Maybe I'll have to pick this up. My original Pokemon Yellow cartridge had a glitch that removed the Lift Key from Silph Co., so I could never complete the game. (For a while I thought I was doing something wrong, but then I looked it up and voilà, the Key was supposed to be behind that plant, and I check there again and it wasn't there.)
Plus, I never knew there was a Surfing Pikachu minigame. Sounds cool.

Re: Rumour: Retro Studios is Working on a New IP, Releases 2017

MetaRyan

@IceClimbers One one hand, this project's been in development for at least 2 years, if not more, already, which means it could very well be a launch (or the dreaded "launch window") title. It wouldn't surprise me if Retro was also helping other teams make NX games too. On the other hand, teams that want to make a quality product first and foremost usually wait until after the console's been out for at least 6 months, so they have more time to polish/optimize it (like Super Mario Galaxy). PLUS, we already (probably) have a "hardcore" tentpole release (Legend of Zelda) at launch, so assuming a Retro Studios game is in a similar category, they might wait a bit (at least a couple months) so sales don't get cannibalized.

Re: Nintendo Will Reveal NX Price, Launch Lineup And Specs This Year, Claims Nikkei

MetaRyan

It'll be before Black Friday, at the very least. Even though NX isn't coming this holiday, people might be inclined to spend less on video games this Christmas if they knew the full details about a console launching in March. (That means we're looking at a mid-July - early November reveal window.)(Plus, I'm sure they'll reveal it before the PS4 Neo and PSVR come out.)

Re: NIS America No Longer Publishing Atlus Games In Europe

MetaRyan

Man, a lot of Europeans are making comments without thinking.
Of course 7th Dragon III and Sega Classics Collection 3D don't have release dates in Europe. NIS America was in charge of that before they broke away from Atlus. Now that Sega's publishing, or if Atlus finds another company to publish in Europe, it will take some time to take the reins, but then you'll start seeing release dates.

Re: Review: Miitomo (Mobile)

This looks interesting. I'll have to give it a try. It's just a shame so many people on here don't have a lot of friends in real life. It makes me sad. I guess you have to be social in order to get the most out of a social app.

Re: Talking Point: My Nintendo and Its Account System Start The Process of Unifying Platforms

MetaRyan

I think a good compromise for crossbuy would be to offer a significant discount on future buys of the same game. So, for a Virtual Console game, you'd buy it for, say, the 3DS, for $5. Then, if you ever want to download it to a new system, you'd only have to pay, say, $1 or $2. That way, Nintendo still gets money for making ports, and more people can afford to get games for multiple platforms. And it wouldn't have to be tied to Virtual Console, although that would be a good place to start.
