Re: After Almost 30 Years, Japan Finally Has A New Best-Selling Pokémon Game

Mariotag

Rather bothered by this. I enjoyed Scarlet, but not like, top seller enjoyed it. I remember a number of months I didn't dare touch it because of a save data erasing bug they introduced after launch, and didn't bother saying when it was fixed. After Pokemon Home integration was brought in, raids became overly difficult to do.
The dlc is also a fair bit more expensive than I'm willing to pay.

Re: Sonic Team Producer Says Revivals Of Older Entries Remain Appealing

Mariotag

I'd love to see a Sonic Adventure bundle, or Sonic 06 remake. Remaking Sonic 06 would be about more than just the game itself. I gather that game was why the devs stopped letting players play as characters like Silver and Blaze. If that gets fixed, we can only hope.
As for the game itself, P06 improves the gameplay, though I've not played that myself. They could potentially make some story beats less cringe. Maybe open up for a sequel. (Because, uhh, PLEASE remove the kiss scene. Come up with a better way for events to unfold.)

Re: Sega Delisting 'Mega Drive Classics' On Switch eShop This December

Mariotag

Wow. This is an unpleasant surprise.
Glad I already got this.
Also, I'm hearing about input lag for this, and the Megaman collections. How bad was it? I played through the two classic MM collections, and the fist MMX collection, but never really noticed anything. (Hadn't played MMX before, but had played MM2 on VC. I got the psn version of the classic collections if that matters.)

Re: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door On Switch Has Already Outsold The GameCube Original

Mariotag

Huh. I'm surprised the Gamecube version didn't sell more, given its popularity. Then again, this is switch we're talking about. Nintendo's golden goose. I occasionally have the perception that they see anything that brings them money, meaning any switch entry in a major franchise, as the "definitive entry" in a series, or a definitive model to use, and in most cases, that worries me a great deal. But here, it's encouraging.
As for the people who didn't like TTYD, part of its appeal was the fact it was a simple, turn based RPG. Accessible, yet sometimes challenging. There was humor, lore, and darkness to be found, and it was genuinely interesting.
I'm also rather surprised that Super Paper Mario the the series biggest seller. It was my first, and I greatly enjoyed it, but I gather it was hated.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Surpasses One Million Sales In Opening Weekend

Mariotag

Huh. This is nice news!
Is the extra episode exclusive to digital deluxe? Or is it later gonna be paid DLC?

Also, seconded to above. Sonic Unleashed needs to come to more modern platforms! I don't really care about Lost World after playing it once though. Difficulty was a bit unbalanced, instead of rising gradually, a few mechanics that weren't explained well, and just generally meh.
Unless 3ds version was different?

Re: Best Mario Party Games Of All Time

Mariotag

Huh. Looking at this list, and early comments makes me regret the fact I had nobody to play with for the first 8 entries, plus DS.
Also, the fact my copy of 6 is actually cracked...

But yeah. Imo, the N64 entries generally rank among the best, especially 2 and 3. 1 was incredibly fun way back when, but the control stick rotation minigames were damaging. And uh, too much reliance on luck? (Is emphasized with the final board, where in addition to 20 coins, you had to outroll Baby Bowser on the dice.) Have yet to play the GBA entry. The DS entry ranks up there with the n64 entries. The Gamecube games were a bit too generic without incredibly much new, but were generally really fun. (Had trouble keeping discs in decent shape in that era, so Idk what order I'd rank them in.) The Wii games were interesting to be sure. As much as 8 played it safe, I actually favored 9 quite a bit. Never played the sole Wii U game, as it never felt worth it, plus, I was terrible at using the gamepad in multiplayer. Island Tour is easily my least favorite. Never played Top 100, or Star Rush, but am VERY tempted to find a copy of Star Rush. Super was an excellent almost return to form, but the simple fact is, it was downsized. I still need to gather pro controllers for Superstars, while Jamboree actually feels like an excellent new addition to the classic games.

Re: Random: Movie Star James McAvoy Says His Favourite Game Is Secret Of Mana

Mariotag

Secret of Mana is genuinely great, but getting used to it can be quite the uphill battle at times... I beat it once on Wii in a rather long struggle. Gotta finish it in the collection in a decidedly less difficult struggle. I stopped because, out of all the reasons, the music. I loved the music too much to progress beyond a certain point.

Re: Hands On: Mario & Luigi: Brothership Shows The Bros. Are Back In Classic RPG Form

Mariotag

@Tyranexx Bad joke alert
Lol tho, I actually dunno if it's a bad joke.

I was one of those fools who had Sticker Star preordered.
The one I haven't played is Origami King.
I like the first three. (from N64 to Wii)
Like, I guess Nintendo was like, "well, we've already perfected the pure RPG style, and ppl raged at us merging RPG with platformer, soooo.."

And yeah, I need to find it. We have posted a LOT. So I got worried.

Re: Hands On: Mario & Luigi: Brothership Shows The Bros. Are Back In Classic RPG Form

Mariotag

@Tyranexx I don't remember that much about the paint mechanics themselves except that it was kinda painstaking.

I never actually looked into Dr. Who much. I just know the reference. And Paper Mario 64 is great! It's far simpler than most RPG games. It beats both its predecessor (SMRPG), spiritual successor (M&L), and sequel (TTYD) at that.
And it occurs to me, is there somewhere else we should move this conversation to? I'm sorta unnerved by just how much of the comments section we're taking up. xD

Re: Hands On: Mario & Luigi: Brothership Shows The Bros. Are Back In Classic RPG Form

Mariotag

@Tyranexx
Ahh. I'd forgotten about the Roshambo Temples. They weren't too bad. Not as frustrating as the notion of getting every possible endpoint, or painting every level fully.

Boos are neat. I sometimes wonder how Lady Bow working with Mario in the first Paper Mario works. Like, it makes sense that a boo can make itself intangible, but making Mario intangible? Apparently, boos were inspired by Dr. Who's weeping angels. I never saw enough to understand why though.

Re: Hands On: Mario & Luigi: Brothership Shows The Bros. Are Back In Classic RPG Form

Mariotag

@Tyranexx
Oh dear. Color Splash? My strongest memory of that game was Snifit or Whiffit. The disaster game show where you require a perfect score in order to progress the game... Though I liked some of the game, that part alone destroyed everything for me.

Interesting softlock. I haven't played BIS in a while. The copy I played belongs to my younger bro, so I don't even have access rn. I forget if there's actually a left handed option or not.

Re: Pokémon Developer Game Freak Reportedly Hacked, Massive Amounts Of Data Allegedly Leaked

Mariotag

That's a lot of comments to read though! To go over my thoughts, it's neat to see some of the stuff that wouldn't have come otherwise (someone PLEASE tell me more about Latias/Blaziken! I love those two!) but it is outright criminal that they doxxed the person they used to gain access to this content. There's plenty of stuff that likely wouldn't have ever shown itself had this not happened, and I appreciate them keeping future games out of it, but hate them attacking the employees. Even if you hate the company's lack of producing a complete product, profiting worth millions, if not billions, then becoming the go to for another generation, that's no reason to harm the employees themselves.

Re: Hands On: Mario & Luigi: Brothership Shows The Bros. Are Back In Classic RPG Form

Mariotag

@Tyranexx I don't really recall the giant battles in BIS being a problem for me. (That was more me playing Spirit Tracks with one screen dead.) I'm curious about the softlock you encountered.
As for Paper Jam, the reasons you listed as for why you like the initial trilogy, are pretty much the reasons I didn't like Paper Jam. Starting with Dream Team, I began finding the games a bit grindy. I'd want to move on, but the game has enemies' levels listed starting with that game, and it gets to be too much at a certain point. The personality that was in the original games is largely absent from Paper Jam in general, as it suffered the Paper Mario Sticker Star treatment of needing to give personality to all the Toads, in exchange for clever new designs and ideas. I think Superstar Saga was my favorite too. I need to replay it again sometime.

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom's Overworld Appears To Include Links To The Past

Mariotag

Eh. LttP, OoA/S, and LA form a sort of trilogy by their beginnings and endings. Example, in OoA/S, Link starts by placing the triforce on a set of pedestals, and at the end, he leaves via ship. Definitely a continuity there.

What bothers me about the EoW map vs LttP is, the forest was moved from to the left of the mountains, to directly in the middle. Idk how that can naturally occur. The whole downfal timeline is the only one where the map is inconsistent with the orientation of key areas in the other games.

Re: Nintendo's Profit During The Switch Generation Is Absolutely Wild

Mariotag

While I am glad Nintendo is doing well, I worry about their mindset regarding IPs. Simply because an iteration in a franchise sells the best does not make it the best, but they may be inclined to think so. I for one, don't want more BotW/TotK type gameplay as the new standard from now on, and would very much like things to continue to change up every so often.
