Re: Pokémon-Themed Mini Game Boy Announced, Though It's Not What You Think

Lofoten

@dartmonkey

Would you consider adding a poll or five?

Suggested polls:

How good do you think the idea of the "Game Boy Jukebox", a Game Boy Mini with 45 carts/songs is?
(On a scale from ridiculous to genius or 0 to 10)

How dissapointed are you this Game Boy Mini does not play games?

What do you think of the price of 69,99 USD for the Game Boy Jukebox?

Will you be buying a Game Boy Jukebox?

Would you buy a Game Boy Mini that one could play games on? (Built in and/or mini carts with games or collections of games.)

Re: Anniversary: The Legend Of Zelda Turns 40 Today - How Did You First Play It?

Lofoten

@Classic603

"My first Zelda was Wind Waker, and my favorite is either WW or Twilight Princess"

Both great games.

Wind Waker was such a different style for the series.

As popular as the Wind Waker is, I'm surprised Nintedo has not made more games for Toon Link.

Toon Links 3 games so far:
Wind Waker (GC 2002, Wii U 2013)
Phantom Hourglass (DS 2007)
Spirit Tracks (DS 2009)

I liked Phantom Hourglass, not crazy about the Temple of the Ocean King though.
Spirit Tracks was for some reason not really my cup of tea, but I did complete it.

Toon Link also appears in:
Super Smask Bros. Brawl (3DS/Wii U)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch)
Hyrule Warriors (Wii U 2014, 3DS 2016, Switch 2018)

The Zelda Toon style even has 3 amiibos:
Smash Toon Link
Toon Link The Wind Waker
Toon Zelda The Wind Waker

And then there is the "Hero of the wind" clothes in Breath of the wild and Tears of the kingdom.

Re: Anniversary: The Legend Of Zelda Turns 40 Today - How Did You First Play It?

Lofoten

@Banjo-
"What are yours?"

1. Where did you first play The Legend of Zelda?
Game Boy Advance - Classic NES Series

(Me and my brother did have a NES, but never Zelda, we had Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and more though, so it was still great.)

2. What was the first (mainline) Zelda game you played?
A Link to the Past (Played it on the SNES and GBA)

(SNES was such an amazing console, with games like A link to the past, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Super Metroid. Games that are still great to this day.)

3. What is your favorite Zelda game?
Tears of the Kingdom (Switch 1)

It's hard to pick just one though.

Some honorable mentions:
A Link to the Past (SNES, GBA)
Link's Awakening (GB, GBC)
A Link Between Worlds (3DS)
Ocarina of Time (N64, 3DS)
Majoras Mask (N64, 3DS)
Breath of the Wild (Switch 1)

And some more:
Skyward Sword (Wii)
The Winder Waker (GC, Wii U)
Echoes of Wisdom (Switch 1)
Twilight Princess (GC, Wii)
The Minish Cap (GBA)
Phantom Hourglass (DS)

Yeah, thats most of them. But I do really like Zelda games.

Re: Review: Virtual Boy For Switch 1 & 2 - Is It Really Worth Revisting Nintendo's Greatest Folly?

Lofoten

I wish Nintendo had done this differently:

The Virtual Boy 2.0:

  • Colorized the games.
  • A "console" (shell for the Switch 1/2) that is comfortable to use. Maybe as a VR-headset. It could still have a design that took inspiration from the original Virtual Boy.
  • Not a subscription: a cart with all the games sold separately, also available in the eshop as a digital download. Maybe also the possibility to buy single games in the eshop.
  • Possibility to play the games in 2D mode without a shell around the Switch 1/2.
  • Finish and release the Virtual Mario game that was in the works.
  • Maybe even make a totally new game for the Virtual Boy. Many people like new retro games..

@ozwally
I played Planet of Lana version 1.2.3.0 in august 2025 handheld on Switch 2 and don't remember encountering any bugs. The game does not have a Switch 2 version. Completed the game, but did not find everything. Found 6 of 10 shrines on my playthrough - they are not essential for the game, just small hidden places with pieces of a mural.

Don't remember how long it took me, but howlongtobeat.com have these times:
Main Story 4½ Hours
Main + Sides 5 Hours
Completionist 6 Hours

I found the game enjoyable, atmospheric and cinematic. Gave it an 8/10.

Re: An Overlooked Disney Collection From Digital Eclipse Has Been Rated For Switch

Lofoten

@the_beaver

"If they had included QuackShot, I'd definitely get it. I loved that game as a child."

Well, that would perhaps complicate things as:
The "The Disney Afternoon Collection" contains 6 (8bit) NES games made by Capcom.
QuackShot is a (16 bit) Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis game made by Sega.

I do agree a rerelease of Quackshot would be most welcome though. By itself or in a collection.

Re: Pikmin 3 Deluxe Nintendo Switch 2 Rating Pops Up Online

Lofoten

I wish Pikmin 1 and 2 would get proper remakes.

The Switch HD versions have not tempted me much because of their graphical limitations.
I was so disappointed when Nintendo revealed Pikmin 1+2 (HD), because I realized it meant remakes would probably not come anytime soon...
It's just so far from the enchanting visual atmosphere of Pikmin 3 and 4.

I did love Pikmin 1 on GameCube, but that was 24 years ago (yeiks.. almost a quarter of a century), and 3D graphics have come a bit further since then.

True remakes of Pikmin 1 and 2 could ofcourse also enhance and expand the games in other ways as well.

Lofoten

@splinters

"Maybe it's these old eyes, but I'm not seeing a massive difference and SW1 holds it's own there."

Personally I see a big difference.

If one do not see a difference or much difference, it might have something to do with the screen you are watching the video on and/or the youtube settings.

If the screen is small, it might be harder to see much difference.
The native resolution and quality of the screen is also important.

If the youtube quality (resolution on youtube) is on a low setting the quality of the game visuals will not be represented correctly, Switch 2 quality in particular.

@NintendoWife

"@Liam_Doolan "Surely a game that is not yet out cannot win?"
Why? I'd even argue that freshly unveiled games are the more interesting part of a conference. Gamescom is still very light on that front, but go back to E3. Who cared about previously released games at E3? It was ALL about just unveiled games. This is not an end-of-year GOTY award of a magazine."

(I, Lofoten, wrote that comment, not Liam_Doolan.)

Because you cannot judge how good a game is, or is not, unless you play it - preferably to completion.

Ofcourse you can give awards to games that are only demos or just shown.
But it would be more natural to include this in another category then "Best game".
Could be in categories like
"Most anticipated game".
"Best demo"

Doesn't seem like Gamescom awards has such categories though.

Nominees Best Nintendo Switch 2 Game

  • Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree – Brownies Inc. / Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Winter Burrow – Pine Creek Games / Noodlecake

3 of the 5 games that were nominted for best Switch 2 game are not out yet:

  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo
  • Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree – Brownies Inc. / Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Winter Burrow – Pine Creek Games / Noodlecake

Whats going on?
Surely a game that is not yet out cannot win?
And surely there are 3 other Switch 2 games that are out, that could have been nominated in stead?
Like:

  • Fast Fusion
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour
  • Drag x Drive
  • Dear Me, I Was...
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV

Maybe Nintendo Life can reach out to Gamescom and ask them about this?

Where do you get the impression Nintendo is really desperate for Mario Kart World to be seen as the best Switch 2 game?

The "Best Nintendo Switch 2 Game" award pointed to in this article is given by Gamescom who is not afiliated with Nintendo.

Famitsu is not afiliated with Nintendo either.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Donkey Konga 2

The American one looks great! The composition, the pose, facial expression, the colors, the energy.

The Japanese one is fine. Perhaps a bit busy.

The European one looks really, really bad.
It's like two stickers they just slapped on some green backround. Why have TWO of DK and Diddy?

Re: Pauline's Age In Donkey Kong Bananza Has Been Revealed

Lofoten

@Ryu_Niiyama

If one look away from Paulines extra height in Odessey, where she was a part of New Donkey City which had those very human looking humans, and instead look at Paulines adult design as of 2025:

In Mario Kart World adult Pauline seems to be about the same height as DK.

In Bananza young Pauline seems to be around half the height of DK:
https://cdn.gamekult.com/optim/images/news/30/3050864319/donkey-kong-bananza-pauline-super-transformations-cote-rpg-le-gorille-se-devoile-4a36f4ef__w1280.jpg

DK have the same new design in Mario Kart World and Bananza.

This means 13-year-old Pauline is about half the height of adult Pauline, and that just does not make much sense in my opinion.
Would make more sense height-wise if she was maybe 4–5-year-old.

There is a possibility Donkey Kong is larger in Bananza, than in Mario Kart World, but it would have to be a lot larger than in Mario Kart World for the height of young Pauline to start making sense. Maybe as big as he was in the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

Re: Pauline's Age In Donkey Kong Bananza Has Been Revealed

Lofoten

Looking forward to Bananza! Looking good!

But there is something about the design of Pauline.

She seems very small for a 13-year-old, especially compared to her grown appearance in Odessey, where she was maybe 3-4 times as tall as she is in Bananza?
According to the all-knowing internet, girls usually stop growing when they are 14-15 years old.

(Such extreme growth can only be explained by eating a lot of mushrooms.
Or could this Pauline be the daugther of Odesseys Pauline and Mario? Mario is half the height of Pauline in Odessey.
... I am joking.)

Her grown up height is somewhat lower in Mario Kart World, Mario Kart Tour and Mario Golf: Super Rush though, but still.

I get they want her small when she clings on to DK,
but maybe they should have just made her younger so the height seemed more natural.
And maybe dropped the heavy makeup.

Perhaps they wanted her to be 13 to have her singing voice not be too childlike.

I get this is fiction and a video game.
But when I see this character she sort of looks like a mix of a small child and a teenager/young adult. This is because of the height, head/body reatio, the makeup, and other design choices.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch

Lofoten

@The_Nintend_Pedant

""The jury's still out on the new Joy-Con sticks' durability"
"Why would they not be durable?"

Q: why would the original switch's sticks not be durable?"

Well. People and companies are not perfect.

Mistakes happen.

People and companies often learn from their mistakes though.

Nintendo did not call the Switch 2, "Switch U", so they are clearly capable of this.

Nintendo has now had 8 years to make Joy-Cons without drifting issues.

Seems to me Nintendo has improved all aspects of the Switch 1 with the Switch 2, I think that also includes the Joy-cons drifting issues.

A song for you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK9oEdSCIBQ

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch

Lofoten

Nintendolifes Switch 2 Cons:

1. "glances longingly at the Switch OLED's screen"

Really?
Comparing the Switch OLED side by side with Switch 2, both set to maximum brightness.
In my opinion the Switch 2 screen wins easily:
7.9 inch vs 7 inch
1080p vs 720p
HDR vs no HDR
VRR vs no VRR
A lot of fps vs less fps
Perfect colour balance. The white is truly white. vs the screen (at least my) has a slight greenish tint.

The colours pop on both screens in my opinion.

Also: Not having OLED on Switch 2 makes the expensive Switch 2, not even more expensive.
Of course - down the road, a few of years from now, there will surely be an upgraded version of the Switch 2, that will have an even bigger and better screen. But will the difference be as big as when the Switch 1 got the OLED update? I don't think so.

Yes, the Switch OLEDs black levels are slightly more black than the Switch 2s, but the difference is really not that big.

Of course - The Switch 2s future upgrade will have a better OLED screen than the Switch 1 OLED. The tech moves forward.

2. "You'll get used to the upgrades very quickly"

To me the Switch 2 with all its upgrades still feels fresh.
And even if one gets used to them. Does it make the console worse?
Does it make you want to play the Switch 1 more?

3. "Battery life is just 'acceptable' - don't leave home without the charger"

Ok. It could have been better.

But I don't think approximately 2 to 6.5 hours is that bad.
It's a balancing act for both cost and size.

Also:
"Nintendo says your bad Switch 2 battery life might be a bug
There can be a bug with the console’s battery life display."
https://www.theverge.com/news/685505/nintendo-says-your-bad-switch-2-battery-life-might-be-a-bug

4. "The onboard 256GB will fill up fast"

I think 256 GB is fine.
It will not fill up that fast if one buys physical games. (Nintendos own games all come on carts.)
Also: One can just buy memory cards.
If you wanted more storage space in the Switch 2, the console would have cost even more.
Now those that need the extra space can spend that money on one or more memory cards.

5. "The jury's still out on the new Joy-Con sticks' durability"

Why would they not be durable?
I'm pretty sure Nintendo have learned from the failure of the Nintendo Switch 1 Joy cons. And it was especially the early ones that had problems.
I have 3 pair of joy cons and of those 6, only one had drifting - and that one was from the original launch day Switch.

To me the Switch 2 just oozes of quality.
It just looks and feels like a premium product, and it truly is.

I'm surprised the upgraded screen gets no love at all in the Pros column.
Bigger, better resolution, HDR, VRR. And the colours and image quality are really good, even though it’s not an OLED.

Joy con mice!

And - magnetic joy cons. They are just so cool. And they are so stable - like they are part of the console, not like the wobbly Joy cons rails on Switch 1.

I think an 8/10 is very low for Switch 2.

I give Switch 2 a 9.5/10 rating.
I love it.

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - The Best Way To Play, But 'Zelda Notes' Sucks

Lofoten

@Olliemar28

I think a portion of people only read the Conclusion, Joys, Cons and Score of the review.
And for these, the Switch 2 Edition Conclusion, Joys, Cons and Score could be rather misleading and confusing.

It does not get less confusing as just below the Score one find these two:
1. "Scoring Policy". Wich focus on games as a whole, and not the new parts of an update.
2. A poll: "What score would you give The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (Switch 2)?"
"Please note voting will score the game in your games collection"
With the wording of the poll and the fact the score is added to ones game collection I think most or many people will vote what they think of the game as a whole and not just what they think of the "updated" parts - regardsless if they read the whole review and understood this was a review for the updated parts only.

An idea:
I suggest putting the text you have at the top under the Conlusion headline, maybe in cursive:
"Our existing reviews — in this case for Breath of the Wild, both the Wii U and Switch versions, and the DLC — are still live and relevant. If you're coming to this game fresh, we recommend you look back at those first. Our NS2 Edition reviews will focus on new features and upgrades, evaluating what they add to the original experience, and whether they're worth your time - and they will be scored accordingly."

Another idea:
Why not have two scores at the bottom?
One score for the game as a whole.
One score for the updated parts alone.
It would bring total clarity to the Switch 2 version reviews.

Also it could stop Switch 2 version games from ranking unfairly low in review lists on nintendolife. Especially for people who are new to the games and did not play them on Switch 1.
