Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Acknowledges Potential Easter Egg In Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom

Lofoten

A tribute to Iwata and Reggie and their relationship would be cool in a Nintendo game, but I don't see this being it.

1. The names are not that similar. Especially when it comes to Reggie.
Satoru Iwata - Inawa
Reggie Fils-Aime - Rogma
In the Japanese original they are called:
イナワ (Inawa)
ログマ (Roguma)
Had it been something like Iwato and Reggo, then I could see it.

2. They do not look like them in the slightest.
Rogma is even smaller than Inawa.
Reggie is huge.

3. The actions of the game characters does not remind me of Iwata and Reggie.

4. The game characters are attendants, Iwata and Reggie were bosses.

"Inawa is an attendant to Dradd, the chief of the River Zora Clan."
https://zeldawiki.wiki/wiki/Inawa

"Rogma is an attendant to Kushara, the chief of the Sea Zora Clan."
https://zeldawiki.wiki/wiki/Rogma

5. Nintendo of America is owned by Nintendo of Japan, as such Iwata was the boss of Reggie. In the game these characters are equal in hierarchy.

EDIT:

6. The game characters does not say anything that remind me of Iwata and Reggie.

7. Difference in age.
The two game characters seems to be youth, and not adults like Iwata and Reggie.

8. Difference in gender.
Inawa is a girl.
Rogma is a boy.

I'm not saying everything has to line up for it to be a tribute, but I fail to see anything substensial line up at all.

@Borderlineland
"Can you really call it a new Zelda title if its been outsourced to third parties to make though? Kinda makes it not really a true Zelda game."

Grezzo did not make the game alone, some key figures in the development were from Nintendo. Two of the three people interviewed for the Ask the developer interview were from Nintendo, including Eiji Aonuma:

Ask the Developer Vol. 13, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom — Part 1-4:

Also, Grezzo is not new to the Zelda series, this is the sixth Zelda game they worked on: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grezzo

Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate In Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?

Lofoten

I stopped playing the Switch version of Links Awakening because of the choppy frame rate. I love the GB and GBC version.
I played the Switch version handheld. The plan was to wait for an update, a Switch Pro or Switch 2. The first two options never came. Here's hoping the Switch 2 is backwards compatible.

Have not noticed anything in Echoes of Wisdom. Am only in the second dungeon, but have explored the world quite a bit.

I play the physical version on a Switch OLED handheld.
Have read it's worst off a memory card, and best off internal memory. I guess a slow card makes it even worse.

Re: Random: The Latest 'Switch 2' Rumour? Scroll Wheel Shoulder Buttons

Lofoten

@PurpulTyeDye
"Okay so if said wheel were 'facts' then this totally debunks the prototype shell and joy cons that were shown off a few weeks back because if u look close at those joy-con pictures with the big bulky eject buttons on the back you can tell that the left and right buttons were everyday OG Switchy Clicky Goodness!"

Well, not exactly, it could have been an earlier prototype.
So even if parts of it could be changed in the finished model, other parts of it could still be the same.

Also, the supposedly leaked 3D-models did seem to have buttons, but the physical shell with main board and joy cons had joy cons without buttons inserted and was in an angle where one did not see the top - so these could possibly be the shells for joy cons with scroll wheels.

Re: Random: The Latest 'Switch 2' Rumour? Scroll Wheel Shoulder Buttons

Lofoten

I think the scroll wheels are plausible for several reasons:

1. Nintendo always include new ideas in their new consoles.
As far as I know this has not been done by “the competitors”.

2. It sounds like a useful feature.

3. Sakurai having the scroll wheel idea for the Game Cube controller.

4. If the Switch 2 does indeed have the scroll wheels:
It might be the fruit of Sakurai's initial idea.
That Sakurai is talking about this in 2023, so many years later, might indicate that he knows something about the Switch 2.

5. Nintendo having a patent for two scroll wheels on a handheld console that looks rather like a Switch.

6. A Nintendo-controller with scroll wheels have been claimed to have been seen.

7. An "empty shell" Switch 2 console have been claimed to have been seen with scroll wheels.
I see some people find it very strange that it exists “empty shell” consoles. I don’t find this strange - it could at least be two things:
A.) A prototype. They need to make sure everything looks and feels right and so on. Including the possible scroll wheels.
B.) An empty shell of the finished model. They are probably handed to manufacturers that make Switch 2 accessories to make sure the accessories fit the console properly. Nintendo would probably not want such companies to get hand on the complete model with electronics. I imagine Nintendo gives out info and items on a need-to-know basis to minimize possible leaks of the finished product.

Until Nintendo unveils the Switch 2, we won't know for sure,
but I lean toward the scroll wheels on Switch 2 being true.

Re: Random: The Latest 'Switch 2' Rumour? Scroll Wheel Shoulder Buttons

Lofoten

@Olliemar28

There are at least one more source that point towards the Switch 2 having scroll wheels.

Maybe add this source to the article:

3 July 2023:
https://arch.b4k.co/v/thread/642791354/
https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/nintendo-switch-2-console-scrolling-wheels-feature-leak/

_ _ _

"Hey, not really a “leak” per se, but something interesting.

I work for the TSA at a fairly large airport on the west coast. A large pelican case came through the X-ray and got pulled for screening, and when I asked the guy questions about the case, he asked that he get a private screening for the contents. He and a coworker ended up going into another room with me and a supervisor, and they popped the locks on the case.

Inside was what looked like a large horizontal computer looking thing, almost like a giant internet modem if I had to describe it. The weird thing is it had a controller with it, and it didn’t really look finished (almost like a busted 3rd party little brother controller), but had the normal ABXY buttons, triggers, sticks, etc. only weird thing about it is it had like 2 mouse scroll wheels next to the triggers.

After screening the machine and controller, our machine alarmed, so we had to do a check of the guy’s personal backpack and pat down etc. only reason I’m making a post here is that he had Nintendo business cards stating that they were some sort of hardware developer/engineers. (I forgot the exact title) in Research development.

Idk, the actual machine seemed about the size of an Xbox One or so, so it seems like Nintendo might be out of the portable console business. Who knows if this is actually their next console or what, but it was exciting and I couldn’t really keep it to myself. That’s all."

_ _ _

If true - could have been a dev kit and a prototype pro controller.
Of course if the Switch 2 has indeed two scroll wheels, they will be present both on the pro controller and the joy cons.

The Guardian

Wikipedia:

"The paper's readership is generally on the mainstream left of British political opinion, and the term "Guardian reader" is used to imply a stereotype of a person with modern liberal, left-wing or "politically correct" views."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian

Their Zelda Echoes of Wisdom review: 3/5
"I hope that the next time we play as Zelda, it feels more empowering."
https://www.theguardian.com/games/2024/sep/25/the-legend-of-zelda-echoes-of-wisdom-review-a-lot-to-learn?

...

Is the Guardians opinion really that interesting in a gaming perspective with Nintendo life readers residing all over the world?

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom

Lofoten

@JimNorman
Why have so much focus on less positive reviews in a list of general reviews?
The list makes it sound like 1 in 4 reviewers are not that happy about the new Zelda.

At the time of writing:

In nintendolifes roundup there are:
75% Positive reviews: 6 reviews including nintendolifes own.
25% Mixed reviews: 2 mixed reviews
0% Negative reviews

Metacritic:
91% Positive reviews: 72 Reviews
6% Mixed reviews: 5 Reviews
0% Negative reviews

It can be interesting or fun to see some reviews that are not happy about games people love, but maybe atleast mention in the list that the reviews that are not that happy about the new Zelda are at the moment rather rare.

Re: Nintendo And Pokémon File Lawsuit Against Palworld Developer Pocketpair

Lofoten

@Liam_Doolan

"Palworld allegedly "infringes multiple patent rights""

"Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, “Nintendo” hereafter), together with The Pokémon Company, filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against Pocketpair, Inc. (HQ: 2-10-2 Higashigotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, “Defendant” hereafter) on September 18, 2024."

Would you consider adding a little information about patents and the companies involved to the article?

The parent organizations of The Pokemon Company (founded 1998) are:
Nintendo (founded 1889)
Game Freak (founded 1989)
Creatures (founded 1995)

Patents are granted by country or region, but:
"PCT – The International Patent System
By filing one international patent application under the PCT, applicants can simultaneously seek protection for an invention in a large number of countries."
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
https://www.wipo.int

The Pokemon Company owns quite a few patents.
Justia.com lists 59 patents:
https://patents.justia.com/assignee/the-pokemon-company

Nintendo patents:
https://patents.justia.com/assignee/nintendo-co-ltd

Game Freak patents:
https://patents.justia.com/assignee/game-freak-inc

Creatures patents:
https://patents.justia.com/assignee/creatures-inc

A couple of japanese patent sites:
https://www.jpo.go.jp
https://www.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp

As the lawsuit is filed in Japan, it will probably focus on Japanese patents.

Re: Two New Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Switch Bundles Announced (North America)

Lofoten

@AlanaHagues
"It's not confirmed whether the DLC is included"

The bundle boxes says:
"BONUS
FULL GAME DOWNLOAD".
It's probably just to emphasize that it's not just a demo.
If the Booster DLC was included, I'm pretty sure it would be clearly marked on the front of the boxes, which it is not.
Nintendo probably hopes many of the ones buying these will buy the DLC as well.
Giving away an extra 48 courses might be a bit much to ask perhaps, and if one does not have Mario Kart 8, the original 48 should be enough for a while.

Hello Alex from Nintendo life there!

8:42-9:29 The jar with triangular particles over it.

The explanation for these triangular particles is actually found in the original trailer: 2:24-2:33
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94RTrH2erPE

The triangular particles indicate that something can be learned as an echo.
You use the staff as a vacuum cleaner to suck in all the lovely triangular particles and then you can echo it around when you feel like it.

Re: Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Player Uses Glitch To Top Donkey Kong Leaderboard

Lofoten

@Liam_Doolan

Would you consider adding a poll to the article?

Maybe something like:
Should exploiting glitches be part of the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition?

  • Yes, using glitches are fine!
  • No, using glitches ruins the fun for me. Nintendo should remove all glitches and also remove runs that have used glitches from the world rankings.
  • Yes and no! Challenges where there are glitches that can be exploited to get lower times should have two categories: 1. No glitches and 2. Glitches.

Re: Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Weekly Challenges #2 Now Live

Lofoten

@Lizuka
"I'm getting the sense this game didn't sell very well given how last week's only had 50,000 participants and this week's seems to have stalled out at 30,000. Shame since I'm enjoying it and would like a follow-up."

At the time of writing, it's over 37 200 participants on Challenge 2 of 5 which has the most for now.
It's open for 5 more days, so I would not be surprised if it surpasses "Competition #1 World Championships" in number of players.

The "Competition #2 World Championships" as a whole has over 163 000 "Current Participants".
This number adds all the individual participant numbers of each of the 5 challenges - so it does not mean there are 163 000 people, as I would imagine many play several of the challenges.

Re: Video: Nintendo Treehouse Plays Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

Lofoten

I don't understand how people are expecting this to include full versions of the NES games.

1. Nintendo never said the full games would be part of the “Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition”.

2. Nintendo World Championships (1990, 2015 and 2017) was never about playing the full versions of the games.

3. The full games are part of Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) which is a subscription service. Nintendo want people to subscribe to NSO.

4. Nintendo has never really been that into doing retro port collections, like Sega and many other publishers are doing.
Nintendo has sold retro games in physical and download form, but mainly one by one, and they pretty much stopped after the Wii U and 3DS.
There are a few exceptions, Nintendo has released a few collections, but they are mainly just a few games, by series and usually have updated versions of the games.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - DK: King Of Swing

Lofoten

If I were going to have one of these as a poster on the wall I would pick the Japanese one. No contest.

It looks great.

Second place: North America.

The European one feels a bit cluttered with info and text.
And I'm not thrilled with the white glow around the logo og characters.
Also it looks very strange with those handles hanging in mid air.
I get that they do so in the game, also that things hanging in mid air is rather common in platformers - but here it looks extra strange. I think it is because the angle of the bacground and the handle Diddy Kong is hanging from and the handle of Donkey Kong is hanging from does not seem to align at all.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Addresses Concerns About His Age And Role At Nintendo

Lofoten

Would be fun if Shigeru Miyamoto had an idea for a totally new Nintendo IP!

Creating new game series is not part of his current roles at Nintendo, but at the same time: this is a creative mind, it would not surprise me if he has ideas for new games now and then, and I am sure everyone at Nintendo would listen if he wanted to share his ideas.

Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?

Lofoten

Are 10 year old games retro?

NES JP 1983, NA 1985, EU 1986
SNES JP 1990, NA 1991, EU 1992
N64 JP/NA 1996, EU 1997
Gamecube JP/NA 2001, EU 2002

Well, maybe (around) 10 years were enough to make the NES retro.
But in 2024 - I don't think so.

Shovel Knight is not retro, but neo retro.
And he was that already in 2014.

His first game was an homage to retro games. How can it ever be something else?

Re: Review: Luigi's Mansion 2 HD (Switch) - The Best Version, But Lacks Extras To Make It Essential

Lofoten

@YunoboCo
"Each Luigi’s Mansion game has it’s own unique style, it would be a disappointment if they made it look exactly like 3"

I was thinking mostly of improving lightning, textures and deitails.
2 HD seems to look a bit flat compared to 3.

2 is one of the best looking games on the 3DS, but 2 HD is not pushing the envelope on the Switch.

How would you describe the different styles of Luigis Mansion 1, 2 and 3?

Re: Talking Point: Could Another Nintendo Series Take Over The 'Traditional' Zelda Template?

Lofoten

"Which Nintendo IP would you like to see take over the 'traditional' Zelda formula?"

I would not like any IP to take over the traditional Zelda formula.
I hope there will continue to be traditional Zeldas.
And by traditional I mean the top down Zelda games with traditional dungeons.
Can still be sort of open world like "A Link between Worlds".

But for other Nintendo IP or new Nintendo IP to use the traditional Zelda formula or be inspired by it? For sure!

I think a Zeldaish Mario game would be very interesting.

Mario has been in so many genres by now:
https://www.mariowiki.com/Genre

Maybe it’s time for "Super Mario Adventure".
A sort of top down action adventure, action RPG.
Exploring, dungeons, puzzles, and so on - but no turn-based battles.

I mean - Mario has 3 different RPG series now with turn-based battles:
Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario
Mario & Luigi

A Zeldaish Mario has been done to a smaller degree in Super Mario 3D Land, World 5-2.
The whole course was made like a top-down mini Zelda dungeon.

"Super Mario Adventure" could take gameplay inspiration from:
Zelda: A Link to the past
Zelda: Link's awakening
Zelda: A link between worlds
And the Mario series as a whole.

The visual style could be "Chubby Mario" and take inspiration from:
Zelda: A link between worlds
Zelda: Links awakening - Remake / Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Super Mario RPG - Remake (But not a diagonal style.)

I would not want Mario to have a sword though.
Oh, and Link could have a fun cameo somewhere in the background.

Nintendo, are you there?
Can you pretty please make Super Mario Adventure?

Re: Talking Point: Could Another Nintendo Series Take Over The 'Traditional' Zelda Template?

Lofoten

"The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom shares the stylized look of the Link's Awakening remake, but it appears to be putting a fresh spin on the tried-and-true Zelda formula, and we’re here for it."

"For the sake of argument, let’s assume that the ‘traditional Zelda’ formula boils down to these key elements:

  • Linear game structure
  • Themed elemental dungeons
  • Key items which open new areas or are required to defeat certain bosses
  • Side quests and collectibles"

Well, "Zelda: A Link between worlds" (the head picture of this article) did not have a linear game structure.
One could lend the items from the purple bunnyman and do the dungeons and areas in any order one wanted to.

But still it leaned more to the "classic" Zeldas than BOTW and TOTK.

"Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" seems to be set in the same world as "Zelda: A Link to the past" and "Zelda: A Link between worlds".
A sort of trilogy perhaps.

As of now, we don't know if "Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" will even have "traditional" dungeons, dungeons at all, "traditional" items or if the order of areas and possible dungeons will be linear or not.

All Zeldas have elements that are not linear: areas, secrets, items or side quests that are optional.
Also often different paths one can take to reach the same area.

Personally I enjoy both the more linear Zeldas and the less linear Zeldas and think there are room for both going forward.
