Re: Nintendo Lawyers Hit Fan-Made Zelda Game With Fatal Copyright Claim

JimmySpades

Here's what I don't understand about what @Abeedo and the majority of people here don't understand. When you own IP, you alone get to determine how it is used. Full stop. If some use of it doesn't harm you, it doesn't matter. If some use of it doesn't profit, it doesn't matter. Fair use situations like legitimate reporting and satire aside, the owner of IP has full and exclusive control of it, and they need not justify how they choose to do so.

Moreover, it takes all of two moments to find reasons why standard apologist arguments fail. "Will consumers really be confused?" Yes. One major problem Nintendo had in marketing the Wii U was how many people thought it was just a peripheral for the Wii and didn't realize it was an entirely new console. "Why is Nintendo bothering? It's such an old game." When they took down AM2R they were developing Samus Returns for 3DS. "Will it really cost them any sales?" In the case of AM2R again, search comment threads at this very site. You'll find plenty of people showing the same proud disdain for Nintendo you get from its fans that you're seeing in this very thread right now proclaiming that they decided to just get AM2R instead, because it was free, to stick it to Nintendo, for a number of reasons, all resulting in lost sales.

So if you don't understand? That's entirely on you. Nintendo is not responsible for educating you, and they certainly aren't required to offer their IP to you.

@RainbowGazelle The concept of good doesn't really apply, because that's not why you play them. They're JRPG comfort food. They're what you play when all you want is to evoke nostalgia for the 16 bit games you used to play and still love, but don't want to expend much energy, don't feel like playing Final Fantasy for the 30th time, and certainly don't feel like tracking down a CRT to connect your SNES to. If you love those games so much that you find outmoded game design endearing and don't question the need to grind, just instinctively doing it instead, you'll enjoy these games, and all it will cost you is a few bucks and a few hours. They're not very good, but for a certain type of fan that doesn't stop them from being great.

I bought the Prinny games physically; about a half dozen of the games seem interesting, but given the 100s of Switch games I already own (that's an exaggeration, but the number rounds to 200 so it's technically true) they're don't stand out as much as games did when my backlog was smaller, so I'll be passing for now. At least the install base is large enough that there's still plenty of audience for them to find.

Embracelet for me. Lost Ember looks good but I'm not a fan of the $30 price point for 5 hour games; I understand going from $20 to $25 as production values improve across the board, but 20% more on top of that is a bit much. And I'll look for reviews of Selfy Collection because Style Savvy is a wildly underrated game that I'm still waiting for on the Switch, but I'll be honest, I'm not too hopeful I'll find anything other than shovelware.

Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo Have A Refund Problem?

@asmi8803 In my experience people who assert that people should care for each other as often as you have really mean that other people should do things for them as often as they want. Sometimes being told no is a sign that the question is unreasonable, not the answer.

Re: Rayman Creator Michel Ancel Announces Retirement From The Games Industry

@Tourtus And you ought to consider the implications of what you're saying before giving @TheFrenchiestFry or anybody else advice on how to comment. Do you really think Ancel would say, yeah, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was struggling before and now without his involvement is guaranteed to die so sorry everyone? Even if it were true? My first instinct was that it was essentially canceled, I read the entire article all the way through, and that little bit of attempted reassurance at the end did nothing to contradict that instinct but confirmed only that Ancient isn't burning bridges as he departs, and nothing about the games themselves.

Re: Watch Out Mario Kart, BIG-Bobby-Car Is Speeding Onto Switch

@scully1888 The entirety of the article is mockery, and please don't insult your readers' intelligence by claiming otherwise. The purpose of bringing this game to their attention when they are not only obviously not the target audience but unlikely to even encounter it, let alone buy it, can only be to put low quality on display to achieve a reaction. It's like making sure that your buddy sees the ugly woman at the bar and then claiming innocence of whatever follows.

To paraphrase my earlier analysis, it's a click move.
