Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity might look similar to any other Musou game, but Koei Tecmo says it's much more than this.
At the online-only Tokyo Game Show last weekend, three members of the team discussed how they've worked "very closely" with Nintendo's Zelda team, who supervised all the work and were "100 times" more involved with this game than the original Hyrule Warriors.
It's been such a good experience, Koei Tecmo producer and head of Team Ninja, Yosuke Hayashi, said he hoped the team would be able to make "more interesting games" like this in the future. Here's the full translation, courtesy of Oni_Dino:
"We started development on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity after Eiji Aonuma of Nintendo approached us. We thought we were done with Hyrule Warriors games, at least for the time being. The first game was like a celebration of Zelda and was full of characters from throughout the series. But then he approached us with this great idea, and here we are working on this amazing game. I’m sure it’s in-line with everyone’s expectations, and I’m excited for players to experience it. I hope we can make more interesting games like this in the future."
Obviously, that last line is open to interpretation, but it's now got us wondering what other IP or games Koei Tecmo could potentially work on in the future. Surely we're not the only ones who want a Musou-style Animal Crossing game?!
What other Nintendo IP would you like to see Koei Tecmo work with in the future? Do you want to see more Musou-style games or something else? Share your thoughts down below.

Blimey, they must have read one of my comments on Nlife haha
Musou pokémon!
Seriously though I would love a Warhammer Musou game. Age of Sigmar in particular.
WRT Animal Crossing Musou: Yes, NintendoLife, you are.
I'd love it if they gave us Xenoblade Warriors.
I don't care if it's just fanservice like the first Hyrule Warriors. I'd eat it all up!
Xenoblade Warriors is the only other one I want. With an equal story focus that links up with the main game.
A Smash Bro roster? They could have a lot of fun with that.
I think the world (Japan) would go mad for a Final Fantasy one.
Smashbros Warriors, what a game that would be!!
But yeah this game i need in my library.
Or work together with Sakurai for the next smashbros where the story mode is Smashbros warriors 2 games in one lol. (Will never happen tho)
Tbh I'd like to see some of the other wars in the Zelda series portrayed in a warriors game. You could even bundle a few together if there isn't enough content for their own individual games.
I want a Mario one, in the Mushroom Kingdom, with Mario sending hundreds of Goombas flying at once, complete with individual sound effects...
Didn't they used to be called Tecmo Koei or did I imagine it?
I want a Xenoblade Warriors game so dang bad!
@eltomo They’ve already done the Dragon Quest ones so a Final Fantasy one wouldn’t be out of the question. Plenty of characters to put in there.
Perhaps a new Battalion Wars??
there is Persona 5 Scramble AKA Persona 5 Strikers that they refuse to localize for the West
They can make a sequel to Metroid Prime ...
...
...
Hunters, obv.
@The-Chosen-one if smash bros warriors was a sub mode it would probably play a lot like Kid Icarus Uprising’s vs Mode.
So neat.
I hope they make more interesting games in the future too. Musou bores me.
My take away from that quote is the confidence in the quality of HW Age of Calamity.
How about you bring Persona 5 Strikers to the West first please
HW looks cool but I'm seriously waiting on that one.
@NoxAeturnus If you're bored of their musou games you should play the Nioh games on PS4/PC
They're really cool Souls-likes that are extremely challenging and methodical compared to their Warriors lineup
@nessisonett Gaia Warriors or Final Fantasy Warriors with the combat mechanics of Dissidia mixed with DQ Heroes would be sick
They'd also have a pretty great roster to pull from that wouldn't just encompass the protagonists of each game like with Dissidia
How about Nintendo Warriors or Super Smash Bros. Warriors?
The backstory for Skyward Sword would work as a Hyrule Warriors game. The first Link, the origin of the Hero's spirit as he takes on the forces of Demise. The only issue would be we only know three characters from that time period: Link, Hylia and Demise. So, they would have to invent a lot of new characters.
I could use a Dead or Alive game on Switch. I mean yeah, there is Xtreme 3 but I’m thinking more of the fighting game. Not a port of DOA6 though, Tecmo kinda dropped the ball on that one.
Musou Star Fox, please!
I've no idea why, but, in reading all your comments, my thoughts gravitated to Shovel Knight. Among all the vast oeuvre of video game characters amiably plowing through hordes of enemies, I think of Shovel Knight... from a 2-D game.
I've never played a Warriors/"unrivaled"/musou game - they've always looked a bit mindless to me - so I look forward to the reaction to Age of Calamity. Still, there seem to be many possibilities for 3D hack and slash games. Ryu Hayabusa? The Bubble Bobble twin dinosaurs? The monkey of the super ball?
Perhaps I shouldn't post on Saturday mornings...
@LillianC14 Horus Heresey would also be very interesting.
@NoxAeturnus Right? These musou games have only 3-4 things attacking you at any given time. So what if you are surrounded by 90 other things that just sit there? It’s amazing how much people are hyping up such a mindless game.
Pikmin Warriors.
But you would control the hundreds of mobs instead and send them all fight against one enemy at once. Oh, wait...
How about they expand on what they worked on Fire Emblem Warriors? The roster was limited to basically three main titles.
It can be as great a love letter Fire Emblem Heroes is, and even add the original character of FEH in Warriors.
That's just me, though.
Fatal Frame is always interesting, Tecmo! wink wink, nudge nudge
Still would love a Ninja Turtles version. The only problem is even with all the variations, the turtles don't have enough allies to form an army for keeps and whatever else.
Sure let them... But leave the warriors type of gameplay out of it.
Pokemon would be interesting.
Mostly holding out for Few2, I liked it more than HW due to the strategy involved and making it less a nightmare to get S ranks.
More than anything, I hope their future games are kinder to co-op and actually spawn enemies.
...Maybe localize Persona 5: The Phantom Strikers first?
Well it sounds like it's shaping up to be a great game so more of the same would be well accepted no doubt....
F-Zero Warriors: Age of Falcon
@Clyde_Radcliffe they, just like Bamco, are called one way in the West and the other in the East, based on which company is better-known; so Tecmo Koei here, Koei Tecmo over there.
Please, please, please, enough with the musou games.
I'm not suggesting that they should stop making them entirely, but it seems to be all they are making these days...
Where's Dead or Alive at?!
@Ainz it's rare I'm impressed by an idea but that's actually a pretty good one. I've been waiting to finally get to the Ancient Battle story and actually see Hylia herself in action.
@clvr I've been calling them Koemo
@TG16_IS_BAE gotta understand the depth of the gameplay and the background those Musou games based on. Play DW on the hardest difficulty and the enemies are a crap ton a lot more aggressive to the point some weak foot soldier starts pwning you like an officer! Lol But the background is about ancient warlords that we're so skilled and strong they were mowing down hundreds of ppl before they were killed. If all 90 surrounding you attacked at once it wouldn't be practical even in real life because there'd be too much congestion. They'd all hit each other instead! Lol plus it wouldn't be historically accurate because the stories were that ppl were scared of them. So to reflect that idea they size you up and wait to attack when your back is turned! 🤣
But the gameplay is simply grinding in real time rather than turn based which is why the officer ranks are the ones that kick your ass just like a boss battle in a turn based fashion. Musou games are just as repetitive as turn based games. The difference is there's breaks in between the fights in turn based games so you don't really notice. Point being you have to play the games with the right goal in mind: farming, grinding, and building. Otherwise you'll get zero enjoyment out it
@Jojarett87 Yeah, I’ve played games like that on their top difficulties. Enemies become “bullet” sponges, still not very interesting when the AI makes 90% of the enemies just chill. Haha, you’re the first person I’ve encountered arguing the “depth” of a musou, lol. What is this, SF4??Hahaha
How about like the original Hyrule Warriors and not necessarily this sequel that is literally just a Breath of the Wild cashgrab. Like the Warriors games? No? Well you like Breath of the Wild of course so enjoy Breath of the Warriors!
@TG16_IS_BAE I mean I called myself trying to make a good point but you're doing a stand up comedy act so I'm not sure if I should explain any further! 🤣 Good jokes btw. Respect
They have already done FE: Warriors, which would have been my next thought in regards to Nintendo franchises.
For non-Nintendo franchises, I’d love Final Fantasy Warriors.
Pikmin, obviously!
Super Smash Warriors!
Pokémon Warriors!
Super Mario Warriors!
I was just thinking this could be the right genre for a Justice League game. The problem with the DC heroes is they're practically invincible, and this is a game series where you almost never die. You just fail to prioritize saving the day in the right way. That could be very interesting with literal superheroes.
@Jojarett87 I get enjoyment out of using abilities just right. Now that there will be a real story in there too and playing in areas I already love, makes the hype pretty massive.
Any other “interesting” musou should probably also feature the same familiar areas and characters and add story details. Other open world Nintendo ip would be obvious choices. Xenoblade is the most obvious choice. But since hw:aoc was a total surprise, they might pick another ip. Astral chain would rock, but it has very few candidate characters. I guess any new Astral Chain would be welcome.
But what about a pikmin musou? Or Kirby? Or Doom? Oh wait, that already is basically musou...
I have ZERO interest in ever playing a warriors game.
The gameplay is freaking so inane.
I also hate how overpowered it makes these characters look compare to botw, but has all this story content.
The whole game announcement feels like a cheat. That story should have been in botw. I’m not spending $60 on a franchise I despise to experience it.
Hollow Knight Warriors! 😍
More interesting games than clones of a 20-year old formula? Please?
Musou and interesting do not mix...
Never thought a Musou game would be the 2020 Switch game that would excite me the most but here we are. Thanks Aonuma for approaching KT.
Loved the first HW so I am dying to play this one. As for suggestions maybe a Kingdom Hearts one?
Translation: we cant make good games anymore so we make this crap to pay the bills.
@Pak-Man DC heroes are not invincible
When this game was announced I was a little but underwhelmed but when I hear that the Zelda team had significant input and after watching the gameplay footage with similar art style and attention to detail then I'm getting a little hyped.
Isn't this a copy from ocarina of time?
