NB4 what's a Wii U comment.
Could make them 100% off and I still wouldn't go near them.
@Zeldafan79 have a salty "Wii U is a discontinued platform you can still buy games for in the browser eShop"comment for the time being.😄
There's loads of these on the eShops by Kemco. They all kinda look the same. Which ones are actually good?
Are any of these winners or are they all stinkers?
I honestly never heard of these... and I’ve played a lot of RPG’s...
@RainbowGazelle I think your penultimate sentence probably answers your question for you... but I'm only speculating, I have no experience of them myself.
Maybe they are discounted because they have been about since the gba days..... What!!! there new games!!
Unlucky Mage sounds like a fun romp
When will Kemco actually release some of their old catalogue like Lagoon on SNES? Or even Kid Klown? Those were decent compared to the 21st century offerings.
I downloaded 3 or 4 of them a while ago. Thinking they can't be as bad as people say they are.
The thing is though, that they are just completely average in a way that makes them almost non-existent.
I've only played Asdivine Hearts (and i still haven't finished it...I'll get to it eventually, I think I'm pretty close to the end). I thought what I've played is ok.
I've never heard of these and I absolutely love old school turn based RPG's. I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on any of them due to all the "mediocre to negative" comments I'm seeing.
Which one is the best?
Are there ANY good Kemco games?
The only one of these I've heard of is Asdivine Hearts, and only in passing on a YT channel. Never played any of them.
I'd take a chance on one or two of these if I didn't have to be so picky on what JRPGs I do play. Some tend to get pretty long. XD
I already got the Kemco RPG collection from Play-Asia so don't really need these but for those who want some simple old-school RPGs to kill time these may be good starter, just don't expect any wow factors like major RPGs you get from Nintendo, Sega, Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, Game Art, Skyrim, Namco, or Enix.
Thanks a lot but nope.
! Bland RPG by Kemco !
@RainbowGazelle Kemco RPGs have a very low-budget feeling to them, and honestly aren’t very good.
Kemco basically uses RPG maker to create generic SNES style JRPGs. If you really really like that era and have literally exhausted the entire catalogue of 16-bit RPGs... Go ahead but you won't remember most of them.
@RainbowGazelle The concept of good doesn't really apply, because that's not why you play them. They're JRPG comfort food. They're what you play when all you want is to evoke nostalgia for the 16 bit games you used to play and still love, but don't want to expend much energy, don't feel like playing Final Fantasy for the 30th time, and certainly don't feel like tracking down a CRT to connect your SNES to. If you love those games so much that you find outmoded game design endearing and don't question the need to grind, just instinctively doing it instead, you'll enjoy these games, and all it will cost you is a few bucks and a few hours. They're not very good, but for a certain type of fan that doesn't stop them from being great.
Not wanting to sound disrespectful, but this dev's games have a reputation of being average or very marginally above average. Also, generic and cliche.
However, I think the did & handful of GBA games including Egg Mania (if I remember correctly in my Swiss cheese memory banks). That was a decentish game tbf.
I’ve got into playing Dragon Quest Heroes 2 again this past week.
Pulp Fiction RPGs? There has got to be a decent one.
I played and beat Revenant Saga when it first came out on Switch (2017). At the time, there weren't a lot of 2D rpgs to choose from and it was a fun enough time. The story was relatively engaging and the battles were pretty standard.
Now though, there are so many games to choose from, nothing really makes it stand out. If you lack funds, then sure, grab it for cheap. You could do worse.
WiiU was actually a great console with poor marketing.
Many people thought it was a gimmick for the Wii.
I enjoyed it for real.
Are these games good? There is so much on the Eshop.
Kemco RPGs are about as generic JRPG as you can get. Typically boilerplate plot with all the expected trope characters for your party and enemies.
I played the Wii U ones because the console was starved for content of all kinds and they were at least an RPG, but you would be better served by just replaying better made ones from the SNES era.
They publish, they aren't devs. They have a number of studios churning these out, and some are better than others. A number of these are from Exe-Create, who is one of their better, if "safer" studios. Don't expect innovation or pushing the envelope, but the Asdivine series is decent.
They're like the B movies of jrpgs. Direct to video. Guilty pleasure for those who love the genre not enduring classics you'll revisit over the years. But I've never bought one outside of a mobile sale, so I don't regret the $3-4 I tend to pay for these lol. I feel like price should factor into a value discussion. People often tell you that these don't hold a candle to the industry greats. And while true, even the inflated console prices they charge are about $15. They default $7-9 on mobile, with frequent sales, and some free with ad support. If they wanted $40-60 I would say that's a valid complaint.
That’s cool... but Kemco SUCKS
Bring me Deja Vu.
@Kisame83 "They're like the B movies of jrpgs. Direct to video."
Perfect description 👌
I've got Fernz Gate and I've put a decent amount of time into it. Not sure if I'm near the end yet. What I like about it is the automatic mode. You just press a button and the battles are done for you. All you have to think about is having the best equipment. After that you're just moving the characters to the next objective to advance the story. Makes it feel a bit more like some kind of VN or slightly interactive story book.
@Yanina haha thank you.
I just read this in an article, describing them as gaming's equivalent of police procedural TV shows-
"They're the perfect amount of predictability and twists, a dash of wit and justice served. You don't have to follow a complex mythology. There's a cold open, a bit of banter, character establishment, red herring, twist, final answer. On Law & Order, if there was a rich kid, they always did it. On House, it was never lupus. And if you don't like an episode, well, there would be a different one next week."
Dragon Sinker? More like Dragon Stinker, am I right guys?
Actually no, I'm just kidding. Dragon Sinker is actually a pretty good Dragon Quest clone.
@Severian those were excellent games back then.
@Slowdive
I'm aware of Dragon View/Super Drakkhen and also of their well-regarded racing title Top Gear (though Drakkhen itself isn't a Kemco-dev'd game per say), but I'm more wondering about modern Kemco titles.
The same studio can be vastly different over the decades depending on personnel and leadership. Look at Retro, for example, and vastly different the team was from Metroid Prime to their two Donkey Kong Country titles. Not necessarily worse quality, but a very different team emphasis.
