@Ryu_Niiyama I keep meaning to play Ever Oasis, but the Switch spoiled me into wanting to play all my games on my TV. I even pre-ordered an Analogue Pocket because it will let me do that with my GBA games, which I would otherwise have abandoned entirely by now. Someday, I swear. Someday.
I'd say I'll keep my eye on it, but given that, even without delays, it could still be two years off, instead I'm going to rely on media outlets to keep their eyes on it, and give me a heads up when release is closer.
Already downloaded The Flower Collectors because I liked the demo well enough and there was 10% off for pre-ordering. Won't download Mario, but I voted for it anyway because I figure buying a physical copy counts. And, skimming the synopses, Aground sounds worth wishlisting and looking into a bit more. So we'll see.
The mental gymnastics people jump through to justify crime. Illegal ROM sites are okay because they preserve games. Leaking Nintendo's assets is okay because it helps us get to know a company that's too secretive. Auctioning off stolen source code is okay because CDPR deserves it. It's all bull$hit. All of that is illegal, and it's as simple as that. But for those of you who aren't very far along in your intellectual development, who still think simple is simplistic, and who require further explanation, the property rights which justify why all of that is illegal are real, and are important. The reasoning behind these crimes is neither.
@scully1888 If you can play each without ever touching the other, then they are effectively two separate games that happen to be published in one package, making it far from pointless to review them separately. And please don't argue that they can't be bought separately, because no proper review factors in price anyway.
I see NintendoLife remembered to compare markets that aren't comparable. Whether or not this game is overpriced on the eShop has nothing to do with its price elsewhere.
@TheAwesomeBowser No, actually, it isn't always Nintendo. And I'm always amazed that there seem to be as many alleged fans constantly criticizing them as there are fanboys blindly defending them.
@Feguy That was my initial reaction as well. As I've never played a Monster Hunter game I expect everything will take time to figure out and that the wirebug won't feel any more nonintuitive than anything else.
@GannonBanned If you were truly versed in theory, you'd know that supply and demand are completely independent. And those collocations of buzzwords aren't nearly as significant as you seem to believe.
Supply and demand explains the price perfectly. Especially once you abandon the absurd notion that there's an inherent price any purely discretionary good should cost.
I get NintendoLife defending games journalism, but how happily they post Brie Larson articles for the gamer-rage-driven clicks limits their credibility.
@1ofUs Review sites get early review copies if they agree to certain conditions. Clearly the embargo on previews just lifted, as my Twitter timeline featured about a dozen tweets at 9:00 linking to them.
@Clyde_Radcliffe When the original Zelda was released, did you complain that it wasn't original but was merely an 8 bit version of Adventure? When Adventure was released, did you complain that it was just Colossal Cave Adventure reskinned? Zelda itself is a copy of a copy, so drawing the line at clones of it is a bit absurd.
@Stude It fascinates me that there is still this belief out there that Wii U owners are a group that Nintendo owes something to, or must appease somehow.
@Lando_ A focus on western styles may indeed be hurting them. The "censorship" you see isn't even real, let alone significant enough to affect sales. I doubt if Japan even has culture warriors banging that drum.
@sketchturner I'm surprised too. But I hope this clues people in to how much IP is worth, and that they'll be less surprised at how vigorously Nintendo protects theirs.
@clvr "UK spelling"? I'll admit that I'm disappointed that my attempt at linguistic trolling didn't get quite the response that I was hoping for, but I didn't expect anybody to argue that America and England spell "football" differently. That more than makes up for it.
@TIND The quality of a game is not dependent on 1) its age, 2) its platform, or 3) its production values. Apart from misunderstanding those, your advice is spot on.
@WiltonRoots I wonder if the people constantly pointing out the games Switch-only owners are missing out on also point out to PS#-only owners all the games they're missing out on. (No I don't.)
@Retro_Player_77 The game has the reputation it has because it represents the worst current practices in the gaming industry, starting with overpromising and underdelivering. Its biggest offense is the obscene crunch, although let's be honest, gamers don't give a fugue about crunch. The "passion" you praise is exactly the excuse publishers use to justify abusing developers, but gamers don't care. They just want their shiny new toys.
@Severian You can keep all digital games forever, including Scott Pilgrim and PT. Just don't delete them. It's like not throwing away a book when you're done. If you don't, you can read it forever. If you do, you can't. In this way there's literally no difference between digital and physical media. In most ways there's no difference.
@SimoneBelmont So you bought a Switch for two games which aren't even the best in their franchises to appear on the system. Well, it is your money; you do you with it.
@Heavyarms55 You might be in the minority, but you're not alone. I'm not a fan of that animation style, and I despise the music which always accompanies it.
More of these finally-getting-around-to-it reviews, please. Not just for the players, although we obviously can only benefit from more information, but for the developers. Discoverability is a major problem that is getting worse, and anything that helps good games find an audience is a positive.
@Kalmaro You can play it, finish it, and then start a longer game immediately afterwards all in the same evening. You'll miss out on nothing by playing this.
@MS7000 Generating ad revenue is precisely why NintendoLife loves posting these articles. Fortunately most of the ads I see are for Pure Xbox, and since I've never owned a Microsoft console and don't visit the site, I can hardly be accused of helping anybody profit from my own clicks.
To answer the headline's question: they've never been about physical games. They've been about exploiting FOMO no less than the limited time releases Nintendo gets lambasted for.
COVID is worrying. Games being delisted from a digital storefront isn't. It's the digital version of going out of print, and is a basic feature of commerce.
Also, business models like Limited Run's, printing 1,000 copies of a game so that in a decade there will be a single copy on eBay going for $200, aren't game preservation. It's exploitation of FOMO.
@COVIDberry I'm touched that you singled me out of everyone you could have mentioned. I assume it means that thinking of me causes you to stumble a bit as you and your buddies are goosestepping I mean walking along.
@dustinprewitt SJWs are also imaginary boogeymen invented by reactionaries to rile themselves up. And by all means, keep working straight out of the pre-fascist right-wing playbook.
I assume that as a staunch detractor of cancel culture you will live by your professed principles and defend my right to identify the nature of your rhetoric, rather than trying to censor me.
If one of them is Fall Guys ... then more power to the people who enjoy it, but to me it feels like a fad whose time is quickly running out, so I don't see the point in taking the time to port it to other systems.
