Update: As promised, Game Dev Tycoon is now available on Nintendo Switch. You can find the game waiting for you on the eShop for £13.49 / $14.99, and you can find all the details you need to know about it below.
Original Article (Tue 25th Aug, 2020 14:00 BST): Greenheart Games has revealed that it's bringing Game Dev Tycoon to Nintendo Switch. The game will be available from the Switch eShop from 8th October.
A popular simulation game that started life back in 2012, Game Dev Tycoon has been played by more than two million wannabe game developers over the past eight years. Previously available on PC and smartphones, the game has been treated to a freshly revamped interface optimised for Joy-Con and touch controls on Switch.
Features
- Start a solo studio in the 80s, and grow it into a world-leading development team
- Create your own games, mixing-and-matching genres, topics and platforms
- Hire, manage and promote your development team (but beware of crunch!)
- Open your own R&D lab and become an industry leader
- Import your saves from PC and mobile to continue your journey to game dev stardom
- Play the way you want: the new Switch interface supports both touch and Joy-Con gameplay!
If you've never played it before, Game Dev Tycoon has you hiring the best team, creating the best games, and researching the best tech to be the best game developer around. You'll notice that you can also build your own consoles (did you spot the Nintendo-like systems in the trailer?)
If you have played it before, you'll be pleased to know that you'll also be able to import your PC or mobile save data to the Switch version thanks to the game's new cross-save support.
As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Will you be picking this up on Switch?

I Might get the switch version, especially for cross-save.
@LatsaSpege ...so gaming companies need to ask permission to bring games to the Switch? Have you even played it? It's pretty fun.
I almost never play games on mobile, but I played a fair bit of this on my iPad back in the day and really enjoyed it.
I'll double dip on Switch.
The gameplay is fairly simple, but quite satisfying.
I have played far too many hours on this game on PC. Guess amma do it all again on Switch lol. Will go nicely with Game Dev Story already on there too.
@LatsaSpege A popular mobile game coming to a popular platform is a problem now? It’s pretty old now too, so I’m sure it’ll find a brand new audience.
Edit: I totally thought this was Game Dev Story. I don’t actually know this game at all, haha. Whoops!
Great, but where is the next console generation update?
A very good and addicting game. But When it reach a X year, it does just over It was just a sad moment
Crap. There goes another 100hrs.
It is an incredible game! I have it since its release on PC and spend hours creating crazy games and managing my game company. It is made with love and knowledge. I hope we get a physical version someday.
Kill Butt finally comes to the Switch!!!
I always felt this game was a rather barebones management sim, and not even a particularly accurate OR funny representation of the act of making video games. :-/
I wasn't too keen on this one whereas I loved Game Dev Story. I bought for PC and was having a reasonable time but the sales for my games were getting worse and worse.
It turns out it was because I'd fluked a great game early on, and whatever algorithm they use to generate game sales expects each game to be better than the previous one. That completely destroyed me and I soon ran out of money. I stopped playing after that...
I have put so many hours into this game. I've had it basically since it's release and I still go back to it once in a while. I'm willing to get it again on Switch.
It's a fun game but I don't know if I would get it on the Switch. To me it feels just right on a mobile device.
Glad to see this coming. Hopefully they do a proper job with the port and not be a buggy broken mess like Mad Games Tycoon. Also hope it isnt price hiked like that game either.
About Time this came.
@fadedcolors I prefer Wild Wild Smiff.
This game looks pretty different from what I remember. Much more going on graphically.
Had a lot of fun with this back in the day. But then I realized there were a couple combinations guaranteed to sell well by what generation it was.
A few playthroughs and I was over it, but I totally forgot what that was so could probably bust it out again and have fun.
Cross save was a HUGELY smart move on their part. Well done. I remember playing this and Mad Games Tycoon for hundreds of hours. Hopefully more games ported from PC / other platforms allow this feature.
I just hope it isn't horribly overpriced like Game Dev Story or it wont sell. $15 for game dev story is laughable. Yes, they are good games. But when they are much cheaper on PC and Mobile for the exact same game you can tell the developer is just abusing the fact its a game console. So many formally mobile or indie PC games I see on eshop are at least 50 percent markup in price than on other platforms. This is the major reason I've never bought any of the kairosoft games on switch like game dev story because its $15 on switch, $3 on mobile.
Spent 150+ hours on this gem on PC. Played it again on iPhone. Cannot wait to play on Switch!
I got this game for 0.99 cent on iOS in 2012. It’s fantastic!
Now 2020, add some Nintendo switch tax and tada 14.99
@koekiemonster well, now it’s 5,49 on iOS.
You bought it in a sale so you can always buy it in a sale now too, right?
Do I get to institute mandatory 100 hour work weeks during crunch? If not, no buy.
Bet it wouldn't let me write over 100 games in a year.
I think I'll get this
15 bucks isn't too bad, but I could play it on my phone if I wanted. For people who have no desire to game on their phones though, it is a good game. I saw a lot of YouTubers having quite a good time with it.
Gonna start my new studio, Paul Beenis Games. Run of course by Paul Creenis.
I intend to buy this, but not for the laughable asking price of AU$22.50. This only cost me a few bucks on iOS, and that was probably five or so years ago now. And I can at least install the iOS version on to multiple devices without issue. Crap out of luck doing that on Switch (making it substantially poorer value for money).
I'd be happy to cough up, say, AU$40-$50 for a physical edition though. For now, I'll wait until the eShop version is AU$10 or less. It's still installed on my iPad if I am ever in the mood.
I have this on PC already, but I personally don't think its worth double dipping.
Debating on picking this and Ikenfell up this week. Some interesting Indies out this week and it’s a tough call, like Foregone looks awesome, but I haven’t checked reviews.
Is crying about how the Switch eShop is set up a playable option?
Two questions:
1. Can you become an evil mega corp game dev, pumping out half-baked franchises and movie license games, gobbling up smaller devs and squeezing customers for every pixel?
2. Can you create a game dev sim?
I think I should get this so I can port a game from a last gen system with few improvements and sell it for full price.
Old pixel-art aesthetics looked better imho..
