Re: Review: Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir - A Delightful And Silly Mystery

@Socar Dude, reread the examples she gave. There are multiple instances where you just need to repeat the same option over and over until something changes. That's not good game design. How is the player supposed to figure out that nagging an NPC ad nauseum will eventually turn a positive result. La Mulana's puzzle are weird but there are actual hints and logic behind them.

She threw in a silly comment at the very end of a mostly glowing review. It wasn't insulting towards anyone who might be interested in the game and was just a joke about the age and history behind the game.

@Socar There is a difference between cryptic and, how the heck was I supposed to know that. And it seems like Detective Club crosses that line a few times. Just because "there is little you can do in them," doesn't mean they should be filled with inane crap to waste your time. That's really pretty simple.

Kate used on the most popular modern adventure games, and one with a long history on Nintendo systems, as a frame of reference to describe how the Detective Club works. This is a common thing people do. Comparing one thing to another. Thankfully, Kate is a good writer and still describes the gameplay well enough that people like me who haven't played AA can understand how Detective Club plays out.

As several people have mentioned, it's her goofing off and having some cheeky fun. People are allowed to do that sometimes and it's done rather frequently on this site for games that have very few flaws.

Honestly it sounds like you skimmed or barely read the review and are just trying to find something to moan about.

@Gs69 Stick with it. Tri on the original Wii was my first game in the series and, like you, I bought into the hype real hard but hit a wall at the literal first boss. Like near controller smashing rage. But once the lightbulb goes off and you figure it out, the whole series is gratifying in a way that few other games are.

Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed

@FullMetalWesker You are probably right that it's due to the size of the area. Loading large spaces like that is taxing.

The decision to halve the frame rate is really surprising though. It's the first time I can think of this gen that I've seen Nintendo opt to do that rather than just let the resolution tank. Even Link's Awakening they decided to keep the 60fps and crazy v-sync rather than just capping the frame rate at 30 and using the spare power budget to lift the resolution to 1080p. And God knows Yoshi could have used an optional Graphics mode to clean up the blurry visuals.

@TheFrenchiestFry If what came over as ports and remakes was just down to "a dev thought it was a cool idea," we'd be seeing every intern programmer at Square working on a port of their favourite childhood SNES and PS1 game.

Fan demand ABSOLUTELY plays a part in what gets ported over. That's why we're getting Nocturne and SMTV, rather than a Raidou port and a new game in the Devil Summoner series.

@Aerona 14 or 15 year old me got it pretty much right when it came out and even then I realized how cringey a lot of the dialogue was, but the game itself was pretty solid. The combat was good and the whole monster companion system I remember being really fleshed out and deep.

Honestly the game would not be nearly so reviled if you could turn off the voicework. Or at the very least switch to Japanese. Emil is just SOOOOOO whiney.

I cannot understand all the praise this game has received for its visuals. The gameplay itself looks awesome and the score is great as well, but the artstyle just feels cheap and bland. I really do not see any connection to Ori, outside of the design of its protagonist.

@Thaliard I agree that Shenmue getting center stage treatment at E3 all those years ago was infuriating. The conference of the leading platform holder should not be announcing Kickstarter campaigns.

Platinum I think mentioned once or twice that most of the Kickstarter funds they received went towards the publishing costs and the creation of all of the physical goodies that came with backing, so it was basically a glorified LRG preorder. Not my favorite thing but okay.

I think with all of these well known industry devs it comes down to either control of the product or publishers just not being interested. The guys working on Eiyuden Chronicle are being very open about making the game they want to make. They have a vision and they don't want others mucking it up. It wouldn't surprise me if they did approach Square Enix, Capcom, or Bandai and they either wanted to make sweeping changes or just straight up said no.

@Thaliard Pretty easily actually. Why bother taking the risk pre-ordering when you can wait til release day, read a couple reviews, and walk into your preferred store to grab a copy off the shelf.

Most Kickstarter games don't have the above luxury. They need that cash flow to have any chance of crossing the finish line. If you want to see the game come out you HAVE to take that risk. And if it doesn't work out, that's life sometimes.
