Nihon Falcom's action RPG Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was announced as coming to Switch in the West back in June as part of the New Game Plus Expo broadcast. At the time it came with a vague '2021' release window attached, but NIS America has now revealed that the game will arrive on Switch (and PC) in the slightly-more-precise 'Summer 2021' slot.
The game released in Japan back in September last year, so series fans have been hankering for a while now. Lucky PS4 owners won't have to wait so long to get their hands on it; the game's coming to Sony's console on in February (on the 2nd in the US, and the 5th in Europe).
NIS America put out the Combat Trailer above a few days ago, and while it's a multiplatform trailer rather than Switch-specific, it's definitely worth checking out. Squint a little bit and check that out for a taste of what's to come on Switch.
Fans can pre-order the Pact Edition on Switch (or PS4) right now, which comes with a physical copy of the game, a mini art book and a digital soundtrack download code. There's also a Limited Edition available (again, for both consoles) with even more swag:
Interestingly, the US Amazon listing has the release date as 30th June at the time of writing, although that's likely just a placeholder.

From '2021' to 'Summer 2021': that's three-quarters less vague! Looking forward to getting your hands on Ys IX? Will you be able to resist it for six-ish months knowing it's available on PS4 (assuming you have access to a Sony console)? Let us know below.

Don't mind the wait, just happy this is coming to Switch. This and Ys Origin coming to Switch is great.
Currently playing YS 8 on Switch and the game is amazing! Already ordered Ys origin from limited run, and I’ll be sure to get this on Switch !!! Finally some good news :3
I played like one or two Ys games on PSP but Ys VIII was also really freaking good on PS4 so I'm probably going to keep track of this one
Sounds good but I’ll get it on PS4 since it’s coming earlier.
Another game on my wanted list.
I'll be getting the PS4 version, in that case. They should have just released the three Western versions simultaneously. If the Switch version is well-optimized, I might double dip, though.
Ys Book 1 & 2 exist
By the time we were hitting 7+, the series just embraced the anime stuff too much. There’s only so much of the same stuff I can handle!
In that case I’ll probably just end up playing the PS4 version on PS5, rather than wait. That new console allure will be very strong.
Enough with the useless goodies. Give us paper instruction booklets. Bring them back. Make them the norm again. I'd even pay $-€10 more for them.
We need a complete collection for the Switch
Adol's design looks so edgy here. Anyway, i'm getting this one since I loved VIII.
I loved VIII & this is looking great too. May get it on PS4 though.
The ps4 version it is then, wonder why the longer wait for the switch? It's not like YS games are graphically challenging. Maybe they are waiting for the rumoured "switch pro" to make the switch version the same as the ps4 version in terms of graphics
I haven’t played Vlll yet, but it’s still on my radar. Nox looks really cool; definitely worth the wait in my eyes.
@playstation_king You missed the part where the PC version is also delayed to the same time as the Switch. This indicates it may not be technical or graphical issues with the Switch, but rather something else.
@imgrowinglegs The allure of using an expensive, fancy new next gen console to play a game from the previous generation must be overwhelming.
i have ys VIII got it half price its in the back log pile but hopefully will get round to it before this one comes out. love the YS games
I love Ys VIII, but I still haven't finished it. Of course I still have a year before the next one comes out (on Switch) but I'm not sure I can bring myself to start another one so soon after finishing the one I've got.
After finishing Ys VIII (100%), I can´t help but looking forward to this!
@Shadowthrone ah sorry didn't see the pc part
The fact that the PS4 is getting this before other platforms suggests it's a timed exclusive.
Still need to try this series. I picked up Ys VIII for the Switch a couple months ago, but I'm unsure when I'll get around to playing it. I've heard it's excellent! I'm also interested in Ys IX as well, though for now I'm content to wait.
Ys VIII was great, really glad to see the continued support for this series on Switch. I can wait till its ready as long as the quality is there
Pretty sure this was reported a week or two back.
Not surprising, Falcolm are a small studio compared to others and thus they don't have the large resources to handle multiple platforms and localisations.
Really? First they said after VIII wouldn't be any more Switch ports, now IX comes but super late compared to PS4 version...
With 8s performance issues on switch, I’ll be getting this on PS4.
So staying on PS4 like Cold Steel IV this October (also 6 months late)
Delays on Switch have a tendency to fall into the void. Would still be waiting around for Disco Elysium's "Soon"... like "Summer", is more of a range than a release date.
@Moroboshi876 @playstation_king @Ralizah Falcom is small. They probably can't work on everything at once. Might as well get the PS4 version out the door while they work on the Switch and Steam release.
Nice news. I'll gonna buy my physical copy for PS4.
It was entirely short-sighted when they put up a fuss about just being a Sony hardware dev and not Switch. The quality of the port needs to follow now to complete the turnaround from that stance.
I’m playing VIII now as my first Ys experience and I’m loving exploring the island.
I’m not sure if exploring a city here would be as much fun though? I might wait on reviews to see if this is just as good.
@Moroboshi876 It's funny because I also distinctly remember them saying something like that
just 4 days later the news came here lmao
I hope they will eventually go back to old school YS style.. Just Adole as the main hero and others are just as side story and just only Adole. I don't like the team setup
@JoeDiddley The city gave me assassin creed vibe.. not in a good way. that's not what I want in YS game
VIII is on my backlog but this is certainly good news. I'll get the Switch version as our PS4 is the fall guys, fortnite, warzone, minecraft machine.
The 8th game was basically a stand alone experience, and the first YS game I played. I heard that 9 is tied to the bigger story of the series. I just hope it doesn't require having played the 7th game to understand what's going on.
@echoplex The Japanese version of Ys IX has a paper instruction book, doesn't do me much good because I don't speak Japanese. Also the recent PS4 release of Ys: Memories of Celceta has a terrific and detailed instruction book, but that's published by XSEED, not NISA who are publishing Ys IX in the West. Anyway, I'm optimistic that Ys IX will have a nice instruction book when it comes out next year.
@playstation_king It's because the PS4 version has been out in Japan since last year. So NISA only have to do the translation for that version, whereas they're developing the Switch and PC ports themselves, hence the time gap in between releases.
@JoeDiddley Don't worry, there is a proper overworld, the whole game doesn't take place inside the city. Think of it as a much bigger version of your settlement in Ys VIII.
I'll buy it on PS4 for the better performance and because it'll be first. I'll grab the special edition for Switch down the road just because. I'm excited for it!
Though I don't like the delay, I will still buy the Switch version because I like switching between handheld and docked mode. That and since there is a possibility of a "Switch Plus" in 2021, I will wait instead of buying a PS4 just for this game.
@TG16_IS_BAE YS has always been anime like thought. from the cutscenes on PCE to the art direction. There was also an anime, which is obscure, for ys book 1 and 2 and it was even dubbed in english.
here is the first episode in english: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vEtOgs6yXo
@Casual_Gamer95 Right, it has always been that way, but continuing to be that way for 9 games without changing anything in terms of character tropes is where I get annoyed. Like, it worked for the first 3 or 4 games, but can they shake something up yet?
@TG16_IS_BAE i'd agree that the recent ys games have been going downhill recently (minus 8). i know people that played the japanese release of ys 9 and they told me it was a step down in many ways
@Casual_Gamer95 regardless of the game quality, I always enjoy the soundtracks, for the most part at least!
I already pre-ordered the Switch version a while ago. It's a long wait but at least it's coming.
Not as long a wait as for Ys Origin from LRG though, I expect that to get delivered sometime in 2024.
I'm glad to see so much love for Ys VIII, it's one of the best games released this gen.
PS4 it is. Definitely trying to Platinum the game, seems like it is going to be just as awesome as YSVIII and Memories of Celceta.
To quote a great cartoon scientist I once watched on TV: "Good News Everyone....!!!"
Ys VIII is my next game ill be playing. Excited to try the series out and possibly give IX a shot
@Alucard83 You know you don’t have to switch away from Adol if you don’t want to, right? I mean it will take longer to defeat defensive enemies, but that’s what air juggles are for.
Adol still kicks major ass even while sharing the spotlight.
@NintendoByNature Be sure to play Oath in Felghana (Ys 3 remake) too, it’s my all time favorite in the series and has an absolutely incredible soundtrack.
@Nomad Ikr? I keep dreading it’s been cancelled somehow
@TG16_IS_BAE this is unfortunately one of the step down i was shared. apparently, they went with a cheaper composer for ys 9 and it's, well, nowhere near as good as some previous games.
@Casual_Gamer95 Agreed there!
