Original Story [Sat 7th Nov, 2020 22:00 GMT]: This year, Bandai Namco's Tales of series celebrates its 25th anniversary! The first entry for Super Famicom was released on 15th December, 1995.
After 25 years, it has got quite the history - with a long list of mainline entries, sequels and spin-offs released over time. To celebrate this milestone, Bandai Namco is hosting a special anniversary livestream. There's no exact date just yet - so keep an eye out for that in the future. Here's what to expect, courtesy of Gematsu:
"The live stream will feature game development stories and anecdotes with producers who have worked on the Tales of series, as well as discussions centered around user questions and survey responses. The latest information on the Tales of series mobile games, events, anniversary goods, and more will also be announced."
The most recent entry in the series to come to the Switch was a definitive edition of Tales of Vesperia. The same game is also currently on sale on the Switch eShop in North America. In October, Bandai Namco also trademarked ‘Tales of Luminaria' in Europe.

#LloydForSmash
I still have a copy of tales of destiny 2 for psx, can't believe how expensive it got on ebay. I think we will get a port of the Wii version of symphonia.
Duck tales?
Just kidding, i would love a new tales game on the switch.
Symphonia would be cool on Switch but I fully expect this to be an announcement of the new game in the series as a PS5 exclusive.
It’ll be just like Mass Effect.
coughDecember14that10:30cough
Ooh, excuse me, nasty cough.
Symphonia is one of gaming’s best RPG gems. But it also spawned one of the worst sequels of the franchise. I still dread the voice acting of Emil.
I wonder what will they do after they’ve done all the letters of the alphabet.
Anyway... Lloyd for Smash. This franchise needs recognition.
Definitly not Tales of Symphonia. Horrible voice-over, terrible script.
The old school games deserve a remake and port with translations. I'm talking Tales of Phantasia port or remake with full animation. Tales of destiny 1 & 2 the former was remade but not translated, the sequel was not translated either. Tales of Eternia remake, fully animated with the WHIS mini-game intact.
I need more information on Arise. A Symphonia or Beseria remaster on current and next gen systems would be sick too
EDIT: wait I forgot Beseria's on PS4. Ok this but Xilia instead
I'd love to see any of the myriad of PS3 entries (Graces F, Xillia I&II, the Symphonia Chronicles collection) hit Switch. Alas, since I've already played Zestiria & Berseria on PS4 in recent memory, it'll get one of those two.
I think there's plenty they could port over, like maybe a download of Phantasia and a port of that HD Symphonia collection the PS3 got.
If a new one's awhile away, port a few entries over. There's plenty of classic RPGs they would blend in with.
Its going to be tales of bakugan trust me.
More cloud version please
I'm shocked because I actually installed Tales of Symphonia (via Steam) 2 hours ago, a game I bought a year ago or so
Hope we get Tales of Symphonia on the Switch minus the gambling for the Devil’s Arm.
Wouldn't get hopes up, Bandai have been doing "anniversary" broadcasts for Tales of with actors and such for years and they almost always have nothing.
A prequel to Tales of Symphonia. Remakes not remasters of the earliest Tales games. Lets start with Phantasia.
...that’s it? No smash?
I really liked Tales of Vesperia. I always heard about the Tales games growing up but somehow just never got to play them. I'd love to see some ports of the classic entries on Switch. Wasn't the Gamecube one supposed to be really good? I feel like someone told me that at some point.
I have only played tales of the abyss on the 3ds and it was pretty damn good. Really need to get into this a bit more.
@nessisonett Tales of Arise is the next game. Been shown off and delayed.
@doctorhino On current-gen consoles. Wouldn’t be surprised if they had something cooked up for PS5, whether that’s a remake or something new. The Tales series is proper confusing, always has been so I expect something left-field. Perhaps it’s a gatcha game on mobile.
@nessisonett Nah, they'll just do a montage of all the games in the series before showing more info on Arise and maybe MAYBE talk about a limited time statue or a Tales themed Cafe.
@nessisonett oh I assumed since it got delayed it will be next gen but maybe just one of those spanning releases. I wouldn't be surprised if they were paid by sony to do something exclusive with how the console war is heating up.
A joint Tales of Symphonia for Switch and Lloyd for Smash announcement would be amazing.
A proper HD remake of Tales of Phantasia for the Switch would be awesome. I know there's 2 remakes of the game already but both are mostly just the same game with better visuals, a proper 3D remake of TOP like what Tales of Hearts R was to the original Tales of Hearts would be fantastic.
@Yosher yeah but could you imagine how angry people would be if yet another sword user got added? Honestly I doubt we ever get Lloyd even though he's perfect for Smash.
@GrandScribe People got freaking pissed with both Corrin and Byleth already, I don't think the people making these decisions care.
Tales of Symphonia, but without that horrible MIDI soundfont please.
While I expect the new game to not come to Switch, I'm surprised we've not seen any ports of older Tales games outside of Vesperia. Seems like easy money.
I'd be down for a new Tales game on Switch! I've played a good number of them. Phantasia is kind of a relic, Symphonia is Symphonia, its sequel sucks, Legendia is weird, Abyss is fantastic, Graces took a while to get into but ended up loving it, Vesperia was pretty good, Xillia was meh, and... I think that's all I've played. I don't have a PS4, so I haven't played anything more recent than Xillia.
@doctorhino In the case of "Destiny 2" (which as I hear is Eternia, since there was an actual Destiny 2 that was Japanese-exclusive), yeah, that was expensive enough that buying the European PSP version was a smarter move, thought I imagine that is a pricey game as well (even more as it seems that one printing contains a nasty bug that was patched out in a later printing).
@Yosher Given the Mii Outfit being missing for so long at such an opportune moment in the franchise's history plus Melville's NDA feels very favorable toward that outcome.
Hoping for some more information and hopefully a release date for Arise and would love to see a port of Symphonia on switch as I doubt the newer releases will come across.
I loved playing Tales of Symphonia but the storytelling was very confusing to me, which is why I've never picked up another game from this series.
I still hope one day to get into this series. I've played about 5 hours of both Vesperia and Berseria. For me it's the combat which failed to click in both games. I suspect as you get further in the systems open up more, but I don't know whether I really enjoy the fundamentals of the system. Outside of that I have liked a lot of what I've seen in terms of characters, setting, story etc. Combat is just such a large piece of an RPG that the other elements without that aren't quite enough for me.
@nessisonett Think Sony snapped up Arise as a timed exclusive?
@fafonio Oh man, I completely forgot this existed. I remember it looked awful. But now that I can get it for ten dollars, I guess I'll be seeing for myself
@all that suggest it. Please not ToS on Switch it was a wonderful game and I have many happy memories playing it but it hasn't aged well. Especially the combat (no free running) and the puzzles.
I hope they can reboot the series. Although I dislike the darker realistic style of Arise I am curious about this event.
If they announced Symphonia for Switch I might just spontaneously combust.
@Ralizah Honestly, these sorts of games never sell well on Xbox. I wouldn’t say I expect it to happen but I definitely wouldn’t be surprised if it did.
@NGNYS they did release Vesperia on switch, besides symphonia was on the gamecube back then, why wouldn’t they release it? It’s the best in the series.
@Asaji well then they could remaster it in that case
@Yosher that's true but there's also the issue of whether they think another sword user will bring in money.
@GrandScribe I'm pretty sure it will depending on who it is. Besides I don't think we have dual-wielding swordsmen yet. Aside from that, despite what the loud angry fans may have you believe, not every person is against more swordfighters so long as the character is fun.. or just not one from Fire Emblem again.
@Aerona I know... how could you go from one of the best RPGs of that decade to that atrocious sequel? I wouldn’t recommend you wasting your time on the sequel. It was good only to see what the original characters did after the game. But the focus isn’t on them... instead with 3 new characters which are as dull as a cardboard. And the voice acting... ugh..... the voice acting!
@fafonio I know right? Hasn't 2020 been bad enough without subjecting myself to Symphonia 2? C-can... Can you at least turn the voice acting off? 😱
@Aerona no, i don’t think you can. Or either change to Japanese, because I would have done that.
@fafonio ...my God
@Slowdive Not just a port thought. A remake with better graphics and extended story maybe? My favorite Tales game ever.
All I want is ToW RM2 and RM3 in English.
I want Tales of Phantasia remake....
My first taste of the franchise was Tales of Vesperia on Switch. Despite the fact that I knew of the series since at least the GameCube era, I had never played any entries. It always fell under "if I had the extra cash to risk, I'd get one"
Now that I'm older and have more access to games, I'd really like to see some of the titles I missed, but without having to sell a kidney buying old consoles, adapter cables and original copies of the games.
@Slowdive same though eye do hope for the ps1 Tales of Phantasia to be on it as well with Japanese dialogue and it's sweet opening
I'd say Lloyd Mii Costume is the most likely, but Melville's NDA was interesting...
Tales of Arise on Switch would be great
Compilation?
Hoping for a retro collection.
I think they had announced a new Tales game for the Switch in 2017.
Am I wrong?
What happened to this?
My #portbegging is ready. :3
@Aerona 14 or 15 year old me got it pretty much right when it came out and even then I realized how cringey a lot of the dialogue was, but the game itself was pretty solid. The combat was good and the whole monster companion system I remember being really fleshed out and deep.
Honestly the game would not be nearly so reviled if you could turn off the voicework. Or at the very least switch to Japanese. Emil is just SOOOOOO whiney.
@KingBowser86 I would also like the Lloyd Mii Costume. Would get it right away!
Tales of Symphonia Definitive Edition prayer circle commence!!
Now watch there be zero switch announcements.
Since the newest entry is skipping Switch, I'm not expecting to see anything for Nintendo fans.
Edit: Which is a little funny since Nintendo owns a small portion of Bamco. I guess it isn't enough to impact business decisions.
I’ve never played a Tales game, this might give me a nudge to play Vesperia soon
Hoping for Tales of Symphonia remastered for Switch! I'd love to play that game in HD. Screw the haters saying it hasn't aged well.
Multi tales character for smash.
Lloyd, Cless, and two others with overlapping moves (Flynn works):
B neutral: demon fang
B down: beast
B up: tiger blade
B forward: another move who’s name I’m not thinking of right now.
Back in my PS1 RPG glory days, I was obsessed with Tales of Destiny 2. So different from what was the norm for an RPG at the time. I think I played a couple more and slowly lost interest in the series at is started to seem a soulless factory of titles.
PLEASE bring Symphonia and Phantasia to Switch!
WE need all tales games on Switch.
I've been bouncing back and forth between Vesperia on Switch and Berseria on PS4 (which has the best protagonist in the series' history IMO) for the last couple of weeks. I only played about half the games that came stateside, but I've enjoyed every Tales game I've played so far. Great series.
@harouhiko the new game was tales of arise and bandai decided not to release it on switch due to the fact that they were upgrading everything, including the engine and graphical fidelity.
There won't be a "new" tales of on switch due to the underpowered hardware
@Indielink @fafonio I actually did end up getting it and playing until you meet Rain. It definitely seems rushed, which is especially lame tenish years later, but I had a ton of fun from what I played. The voice acting isn't even as bad as I heard, but maybe I just have a high tolerance for cringey anime "I'm sorrys". 😂 Marta is at least really cute
Symphonia's soundtrack is pretty legendary in my book so it's great hearing the remixed tracks. Pretty nostalgic coming back to the world after so long
@Heavyarms55 Well, I remember my last attempt to play through Phantasia.
The GBA version.
(since well, of the seemingly endless ports of that game produced, only the GBA and the mobile version were localized.
I remember reading the mobile version get ripped apart for P2W, and unfortunately Bamco decided the best course of action was to remove it entirely rather than make it a non-P2W game. Though I can't say how much I'd want to play the game on a phone.)
Though I understand you are probably opposed to fan translations then if you opposed to emulation, I recall?
And maybe that is a blessing then, for even thinking about the SFC version and how incredibly juvenile the fan translation writing would come off, if looking at again. (and I mean, besides the one scene everyone speaks of for its explicit language)
Only behind the SFC FF4 in thinking "what did the fans DO to that game?"
But that was a thing then, these fans probably were teenagers who were like "oh man, Nintendo always makes the devs censor SO much out of their games and we're not going" and then they just as much foul language as they can in the games whether or it was even warranted by the story.
I remember playing Vilgust for the Famicom and the translation wrote "Murobo (or whatever the character's name was) kicked some ass!" every time the enemy was defeated. Does that not sound childish? I'm wanting to bet that the original text did not mention... neither a "shiri" (looking up my dictionary) nor it being "kerimashita".
I'm down for a Symphonia remaster
knowing bandai they will do ANYTHING in order to avoid releasing more of the series on switch. We're talking about the company that flat out ignored what fans were asking on switch and proceded to release the god-awful jumpforce instead of more tales of or SAO games.
IMO bandai can stick it up, i sincerely hope jumpforce didn't sell well on switch so next time they actually release ports that people want.
@KingMike I'm not opposed to emulation, but I am opposed to piracy. I have an Everdrive for GBA, but I only use roms or modded versions of games I actually own the original of. And I have no issue with things like Virtual Console or NSO (aside from the lack of the former on Switch or the weak selection on the latter...) and those are emulation services.
But I'm not downloading roms for any game I don't actually own an original copy of.
So, about Bandai Namco not doing much on the Switch:
Why does everybody hate the sequel to Tales of Symphonia? I've played the entirety of it and the writing and story are good, the character dialogue is good and can be funny, the new characters taking the lead are great additions, and I've not played all of the original but in comparison it has an overhaul of many aspects, like vastly improved graphics, spoken dialogue for EVERY cutscene rather than half spoken half written text, and the monsters in the overworlds actually have their own models rather than some weird low-res skull or blob. I really don't understand why it's **** on so much.
PS, Emil's voice is not bad in the slightest. It fits his character so well!
I'm calling it now, Lloyd will be announced for Smash before the end of the day, and this comment will be my lasting memorial of this statement. Hi YouTube BTW
EDIT: Wow, wasn't expecting Sephiroth. He deserved it more though.
Well what on earth was even announced then? I've heard literally nothing and from the seems of it, Nintendo Life didn't find anything to report either. I can't even find anything on google besides articles announcing this.
I like all of them because some never came out and one got wrong name
