During yesterday's Devolver Digital broadcast, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer made a surprise appearance and announced a release date for the upcoming reverse horror game, Carrion. It will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch on 23rd July.
So, how exactly does a reverse horror game play out? Instead of taking control of a heroic human, you'll assume the role of a terrifying amorphous creature that slithers about. Here's the official description:
CARRION is a reverse horror game in which you assume the role of an amorphous creature of unknown origin. Stalk and consume those that imprisoned you to spread fear and panic throughout the facility. Grow and evolve as you tear down this prison and acquire more and more devastating abilities on the path to retribution.
A physical release has also been confirmed, but there's no additional information about it just yet.
Have you always wanted to take control of the alien rather than the survivors? Does this look like your kind of game? Leave a comment down below.

It looks creepy!
Shadow Warrior 3 and Serious Sam were the highlightsbof the Direct except neither were announced for Switch. Serious Sam is for Stadia and Steam but no platforms were announced for SW3 so there's still hope. Carrion looks good but we knew that was coming.
I’m looking for the release!
If the game receive good reviews, I probably buy!
Off topic: I need to play Fatal Frame on my WiiU.
I download the game and never begin.
This looks so f'n cool
I didn’t know I wanted this but gosh dernd it I do
@OorWullie I would be stupidly impressed if SW3 worked in some form on Switch.
Doom Eternal is the closest comparison we have so once we actually get Switch footage of that we might have a decent idea of how feasible SW might be.
So it's like The Last of Us Part 2?
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Just a bad joke based on the outrage that game has caused. But this game looks pretty cool (and so does TLoUP2).
Didn't they show this at their E3 last year too?
Sweet- it’s like you are taking on the role of an SCP facility escapee mixed with elements from The Thing and The Blob. As an avid horror movie aficionado; this news pleases me to no end.
Bring it on!
Still no date for Sludge Life tho huh?
This could be really cool! Be intrusting to see how it plays and how much the freak mutates! Mmm lots of juicy humans to gobble up! 😁
"Instead of taking control of a heroic human, you'll assume the role of a terrifying amorphous creature that slithers about."
Nah... I play games to escape reality. 😉
@DaCh33f I think it's an Epic timed exclusive currently?
Reminds me of how much I want The Thing (remade, sequel, port, I don't care... I do, but I'll happily play whichever they'd make) for the witch. I want this one as well now.
Agree with poster, The Thing made into a game. Hope it is good for Horror game fans, not my jam, but like having something for all taste.
Looks unique so let's see what the review says.
Weird West and SW3 were the most interesting ones imo. Great presentation though. I really hope Weird West makes it to the Switch.
They need to include a plusie for it as well.
@ritouf I’m not a Bakugan fan myself, but it’s way newer than “from the 80’s,” haha. It’s from like 2006.
I played the demo last year on Steam and enjoyed my time with it. Devolver Digital has really been bringing the goods this year.
Pretty cool, may get this one eventually. (The backlog... oh the backlog...)
@SwitchForce
OMG! Yes - Carrion plushie with tentacles! And a tiny scientist you can stuff into it's cavernous mouths!
This game looks like a ton of fun. I’m a bit fatigued on the art style, though.
This looks like it'll be a fun game though I'm not to big on the graphics and style
@muscpt I have a name, ya know.
Herr Doktor TotenKopf.
Remember it well.
💀☠️
There is news about the physical release:
by Special reserve games, open pre-order starts on launch day.

How big is this download? I can't find that information anywhere?
Reminds me of Sea Salt. with metroidvania elements.
Preordered.
The creature reminds me of a cross between 1988 The Blob and one of those aliens Tom Cruise fought on the beach in Edge Of Tomorrow. If this is less than £20 it's instabuy for me
Oo wow, I'd been seeing snippets of this but didn't know it was coming to Switch. :3
So this is what happens when you let John Carpenter direct a Kirby game.
Looks pretty cool, I'll definitely keep an eye on this one.
Hell yeah now that's what I'm talking about! This looks great! Might give Katana Zero a run for my favorite platformer.
Wow I like the idea of this game you play as a mysterious creature devouring human sign me up.🤣 I will double dip on this if it plays as good as the trailer makes it look. The game reminds me of playing Ooze on my sega genesis in the late 90's.
If anyone is interested there's a demo on Steam and it's pretty fun
